Annette Bening is set to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series “Lucky,” Variety has learned.
It was announced that Taylor-Joy would star in the series back in December. It is based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley. The book was a New York Times bestseller and a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Reese’s Book Club.
Per the official description, Taylor-Joy stars as “a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.”
Bening will appear in the role of Priscilla. This marks the second major TV role she has lined up in the past few years, with Bening having recently starred in the Peacock drama “Apples Never Fall.” That show was based on the book...

"Some paintings aren't curious enough for me to go 'what's that?' This doesn't have that quality..." Ha ha! Utopia has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called Not an Artist, the second feature from filmmakers Alexi Pappas & Jeremy Teicher. This first premiered at the 2023 Austin Film Festival and will be on VOD in early 2025 to enjoy. A comedy making fun of artist residency programs! Zing! Pappas (A young woman) is accepted into a residency program created by the wealthy enigmatic benefactor known as "The Abbott" (RZA) for high-potential artists suffering from creative constipation. She's working on her art until her father unexpectedly shows up and disrupts the entire retreat. The indie comedy stars Matt Walsh (who co-wrote the script) with Ciara Bravo, Haley Joel Osment, "RZA", Cleopatra Coleman, Rosalind Chao, Betsy Sodaro, and Dan Bakkedahl. This reminds me of the quirky indies they used to make like...

Glenn Close delivered a killer Golden Globes acceptance speech in 2019 when she pulled off an upset in Best Drama Actress by winning for “The Wife.” Lady Gaga was the frontrunner for her performance in “A Star is Born” but it was Close who took to the stage.
We could be in for a similar situation this year as Annette Bening looks to claim a career win of her own. The frontrunner for Best Drama Actress is Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Also nominated are Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”). Bening’s path to a Golden Globe victory isn’t just merited by her veteran status, however. She also has the backing of the critics.
Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) opined: “Nyad is played by Annette Bening, who trained for a year to ready herself for the physical demands of the role.

Joseph Fiennes is an English actor with a long list of acclaimed credits ranging from award-winning period drama movies to dystopic prestige television. Fiennes began his performing career in the West End of London before quickly moving into television. His first movie, The Vacillations of Poppy Carew (1995) was a small, unremarkable television movie, but it set the rest of his acting career in motion, and it was a year later he had a leading role in Stealing Beauty alongside prominent stars Liv Tyler, Rachel Weisz, and Jeremy Irons. However, it was in 1998 Fiennes really came onto the scene with one of his most acclaimed movie years ever.
Since the early part of his career, Fiennes has populated his filmography with primarily period places. He’s played historical figures like Martin Luther, Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, and William Shakespeare. Even when Fiennes is portraying a fictional character rather than a real-life one,...

Evan Rachel Wood will star alongside Josh Gad and Anthony Carrigan in Alex Winter’s murder mystery “The Adults.” Rocket Science will begin sales at Berline’s European Film Market.
“The Adults” concerns siblings (Gad and Wood) struggling in modern-day America when they discover a dead body in their parents’ basement. It will be produced by Winter, Scott Kroopf of Many Rivers Productions, and Russell Hollander. Penned by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin, the film will be executive produced by Connie Tavel. CAA Media Finance, which is arranging financing for the film, will represent domestic sales.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Evan, Josh and Anthony on this darkly comic crime drama,” said Winter, “which takes a sly look at the challenges we all face today trying to survive in the modern world.”
Wood most recently starred as a fictionalized version of ’80s-era Madonna in Roku’s “Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story.

Having been in the spotlight the vast majority of her life, both onscreen as an actor and offscreen as a Hollywood cautionary tale, Evan Rachel Wood understands how media works. She sees the potential of its manipulation, and how the consequences can careen out of control. And so Wood made the conscious choice to take hold of her own narrative for “Phoenix Rising,” the new documentary about her life that acts as a sharp corrective to how she’s seen her life unfold in front of the world, and as a record of how she understands it now. Even before the documentary delves into Wood’s accounts of suffering horrifying abuse at the hands of Marilyn Manson, the provocative rock star whom she dated as a teenager, And when they do commit to unpacking the Manson allegations, neither Wood nor “Phoenix Rising” holds back.

Kate: It’s not meant to be.Alex: No. Don’t say that. Something must’ve happened.A decade and a half is not really long enough to commemorate a film’s anniversary—but then again, bogus nostalgia for the immediate past is the main engine of pop culture discourse today. So here’s a wild proposition: what if 2006 was the last great year for adventurous, bigger-budget movies? It’s impossible to answer, of course, but consider these studio releases: Marie-Antoinette, Children of Men, Southland Tales, Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych, Inside Man, Miami Vice, Idlewild, Crank, Idiocracy, The Holiday, The Black Dahlia. Millions were spent on bizarre highbrow and/or vanity projects like Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Soderbergh’s The Good German, Tommy Lee Jones’ (phenomenal) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, or Ryan Murphy’s (excruciating) Running With Scissors. Boasting a 15-year career as a set decorator, Matthew Flood Ferguson found his first major TV design job in Netflix miniseries Hollywood, on which he took a deep dive into the minutiae of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the starry drama is set in Post-World War II Tinseltown, following a group of actors and filmmakers who will do whatever it takes to realize their dreams. Spotlighting biases toward race, gender and sexuality that exist to this day, it considers what might have happened, had inequality in entertainment been addressed decades ago.
First working with Murphy on the 2006 film Running with Scissors, Ferguson subsequently joined the prolific creator on a number of projects, including The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, getting one of his first opportunities in production design on the upcoming Ratched. “Judy Becker, the production designer, had to leave to do another project,...

Among the many cruelties of the coronavirus outbreak has been the way social distancing measures prevent us from visiting our relatives, which should be especially difficult on Mother’s Day for those who are accustomed to spending that time with mom.
That’s where movies can assist: Why not select a film — from the list below or one of your own choosing — and schedule a time for you and mom to watch it “together, apart”? You can both rent the movie (many are included free through streaming subscriptions) or pick an old favorite that’s in both of your home video collections, press play at the same time, then call each other afterward to talk about it.
In theory, every film character ever written has a mother, so it’s nearly impossible to imagine a definitive list of the greatest cinematic homages to the women who raised us (“momages”?). And besides,...

Postal 4 looks to continue the controversial legacy of the infamous Postal 2.
Controversial shooter series Postal is getting a sequel called Postal 4: No Regerts. Yes, that seems to be an intentional misspelling.
Postal 4 is being developed by Running With Scissors and looks like about what you'd expect from a "classic" Postal title. In other words, you play as Postal Guy as he tries to make a little money.
While it's possible to acquire money through honest means, the game will find ways to encourage you to utilize violence in order to get what you want. Emmy-nominated “Orange is the New Black” actress Laverne Cox isn’t just a fan of “Sex and the City,” she’s a scholar. Cox knows most of the HBO series’ episodes by heart, and can even list the various Emmys and Golden Globes that the show and its performers received over the years.
She admits, however, that the show stumbled in one disappointing way: Its depiction of transgender individuals, particularly black trans women. In the show’s season 3 finale, “Cock a Doodle Do,” Samantha is kept awake by a group of loud prostitutes who happen to be trans, but aren’t explored beyond that.
“It was disappointing to me, as a black trans woman, to see black trans women enter the world of ‘Sex and the City’ and be so thoroughly othered,” Cox told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “But being critical of the show in that way didn...

The only thing surprising about Ryan Murphy getting a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame Dec. 4 is that he doesn’t already have one.
“It’s about time!” exclaims Sarah Paulson, a frequent Murphy collaborator who’s worked with him on multiple projects since 2004, including every incarnation of “American Horror Story.” “I’m surprised people haven’t been walking all over his star on Hollywood Boulevard for 10 years now.”
One of the most prolific producers working today, Murphy has made an indelible stamp on the industry, reinventing the television landscape with every series he’s created, from 1999’s “Popular” and 2003’s “Nip/Tuck” to 2009’s “Glee” and his latest effort, “Pose.” Those anthology series that now dominate the screen? His idea. The migration of movie stars to television? Murphy again.
And now he’s set to bring his unique brand of reinvention to Netflix, where he signed a $300 million overall deal in February,...

’The history of this moment is not lost on me. I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 dollars in savings in my pocket.’
Netflix has signed Ryan Murphy to a multi-year deal to make new series and films, poaching the Emmy-winning producer away from his current studio home at 20th Century Fox.
The deal will come into effect in July and is reportedly a five-year arrangement that could be worth up to $300m.
The pact represents another talent coup for Netflix, which last summer poached Shonda Rhimes away from Disney’s ABC.
Murphy, best known for Nip/Tuck and Glee and also a prolific writer and director, was thought to be considering new options in advance of the expiration this summer of his 20th Century Fox deal. If he had renewed that deal he may have ended up working at Disney, which has agreed to buy assets of Rupert Murdoch’s [link=co...

Chris here. Like many of you, I'm still bemoaning Annette Bening's 20th Century Women Oscar miss - but her next role might lighten the sting depending on where your television alliances lie. The actress is the first cast member to join Ryan Murphy's Katrina: American Crime Story as Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco. With Feud just a few weeks away, Ryan Murphy is giving us all actresses all the time, even on projects yet to film.
If this seems something of a surprising casting coup for Murphy, you have probably forgotten that they had already worked together on Murphy's Running With Scissors adaptation. Funny how loyal his actors are even on his outright misfires. Murphy promises that other recognized figures like Blanco will factor into his Katrina narrative, so start speculating (or shuddering) away at who he could get to play the likes of Sean Penn and George W. Bush.

Brad Pitt is already a world-renowned actor, a silver screen heartthrob, and a tabloid rumor magnet, but perhaps the 52-year-old’s biggest impact on the entertainment industry will be his wildly successful production company: Plan B Entertainment Inc. — commonly called Plan B.
Plan B was established in November 2001 and, while having gone through a few behind-the-scenes changes throughout the years, it has kept a consistent track record when it comes to churning out movies and TV shows that garner critical, audience, and awards attention. Now, after about 15 years of existence, the company has a shot at earning its fifth best picture nomination at the Oscars on February 2017 with Moonlight.
In addition to the Oklahoma native, Plan B was founded with Brad Grey and Jennifer Aniston. In 2006, Aniston left the company after a high-profile divorce with Pitt and Grey exited...

Over the course of her career, Annette Bening has been nominated for four Oscars. That, of course, shouldn’t come as a surprise because this is one extremely talented lady. What might shock you, though, is that Bening has taken home zero of those coveted statuettes — but this could all change with her latest work: 20th Century Women.
Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker) returns with another work he both directed and wrote the screenplay for — and it has the distinction of holding its world premiere on October 8 at the 54th New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece film this year.
The movie is a comedy based in Santa Barbara in the late 1970s and is the story of three women — Bening as single Dorothea Fields, a single mother to teenaged son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann); Greta Gerwig as Abbie,...

Postal Redux, a remastered version of Postal released in 1997 launches on PC on May 20, developer Running With Scissors has announced. The original – a 3D isometric shooter – sparked controversy 19 years ago for its violence and gore and centred around a player character who “goes postal” after being evicted from his home and embarks on a killing spree. Fun fact: the game is the inspiration for Uwe Boll’s film of the same name – considered to be one of the worst ever made.
Besides the high-definition treatment being given to the remaster, Running With Scissors says that this spruced up version will feature a new score-attack mode called Rampage, which aims to give players more replay value.
With the new powerful addition of Rampage, Postal fans will go wild. The outrageous single-player game play mode rewards an aggressive style of play by increasing a multiplier for each consecutive kill in a streak.

Catharsis (n) ku-thaa-sis
From the Greek meaning “purging” or “cleansing” – refers to the restoration or renewal of emotions by relieving tensions often through art, such as music.
You know, when I’m feeling a little tense and need to unwind, I like to bust open something like Left 4 Dead or Brutal Doom for some violent release. I can take several anguishes out on zombie hordes or pixilated hell beasts without the finger wagging from authoritative figures or animal rights groups.
Those who say violent video games turn people into violent criminals have obviously never experienced the feeling of tension washing away from your very core with every exploded head or mowed down imp. It’s like an orgy for my Wasd keys, only without the smoking afterwards.
Okay, maybe a little smoke.
That cathartic feeling one gets from video game violence was the least I was hoping for from...

Gwyneth Paltrow silver dress on the Oscars' Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards Donning a shining silver dress, Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Paltrow's latest movie, Country Strong, was up for a Best Song Oscar. It lost to the Toy Story 3 ditty "We Belong Together," by Randy Newman. More than a decade ago, Gwyneth Paltrow took home the Best Actress Oscar for John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), a romantic comedy-drama also featuring Joseph Fiennes (as William Shakespeare), Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush, and this year's Best Actor Oscar winner, Colin Firth (The King's Speech). Paltrow's (moderately) gender-bending Shakespeare in Love heroine remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date. Directed by Shana Feste, Country Strong fared decently at the U.S. box office, but not as well as some had expected. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow, the cast includes...

Everybody loves a controversy. They’re easy to manufacture, easy to spread, and once they’re out there then people get to stitch their own agendas to them like horrible, media-driven Frankenstein’s monsters. Good times!
Maybe that’s why everything from Doom to Mario Party has been slammed by the media, recalled or outright legally banned at some point. In fact, if you wanted to, you could come up with a whole list of games that have been controversial for silly reasons.
However, this is not that list.
We don’t need to remind you that Wolfenstein is banned in Germany or that Ocarina of Time caused a stir because it originally contained a Muslim prayer. No, this is a list of the dirtiest, the most disgusting, the most pornographic, the most sleazy, the most racist (intentionally or otherwise), the most sexist, the most thought-provoking, the most challenging,...

HBO has released a new, full-length The Normal Heart trailer for director Ryan Murphy’s (Glee, American Horror Story) adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Larry Kramer stage play. The film follows the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s, and it looks at the nation’s sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical community fought to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city and nation in denial. Though Murphy is a bit hit and miss (his last two films were Running with Scissors and Eat, Pray, Love), I’m encouraged by The Normal Heart’s stellar ensemble cast and the fact that Kramer penned the screenplay. Mark Ruffalo and Taylor Kitsch, in particular, look to be standouts, and the tone feels reminiscent of the heartwrenching documentary How to Survive a Plague, in which Kramer plays an integral role. Annoyed that the famous American magazine was planning a takedown of her, the actor and lifestyle guru has fought back
Age: 41.
Appearance: The most beautiful woman in the world.
Who says? People, the biggest magazine in America.
Ok. She's an actor, isn't she? Yes, that is indeed the case, more or less.
More or less? Her early triumphs – Emma, Shakespeare in Love, The Royal Tenenbaums – were followed by a series of turkeys (who can forget View from the Top and Running with Scissors?). She is now a fixture in the Iron Man franchise, and has built a lucrative sideline as a lifestyle guru.
So what's her latest project? Vanity Unfair.
Sounds interesting. What's the plot? A famous American magazine plans an in-depth look at her. She gets wind of it, tells her friends not to answer any questions, and launches what some see as a media offensive before the magazine even hits the newsstands.

‘Running with Scissors’ movie review: Annette Bening shines in muddled coming-of-age tale (photo: Annette Bening and Joseph Cross in ‘Running with Scissors’) Problems abound in Ryan Murphy’s movie version of Augusten Burroughs’ book of memoirs Running with Scissors. Those range from the film’s cartoonish humor and meandering storyline to an unappealing lead character and fuzzily sketched secondary ones. The only element that prevents this muddled comedy-drama from becoming a complete failure is a generally solid supporting cast headed by an outstanding Annette Bening. Growing up isn’t easy, we all know that. But as Running with Scissors‘ adolescent anti-hero Augusten Burroughs (Joseph Cross) will tell you, things can get particularly difficult when your father (Alec Baldwin) is a raging alcoholic and your mother (Annette Bening) is a poet wannabe clearly suffering from bipolar disorder — all the while believing that her husband is out to do both her and you in.

Good morning! Thanks to Heather Hogan for Brewing while I was out last week.
I love Gabrielle Union so hard. She's played a lesbian in Running with Scissors and I'm waiting patiently for her to do it again. In the meantime, she is talking about her crushes on anchorwomen:
Soledad O’Brien! But I’ve been obsessed with her for years. The “Black in America” series, they take up a lot of space in my DVR, and I refuse to erase them. If you come over my house you’re gonna watch some part of “Black in America.” I will make sure the conversation is steered toward something that gives me a reason to watch “Black in America.” She has a rare combination of being painfully genuine and honest and delivering information in a way that you believe her...

Showing some love to their English fans, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow showed up at the “Iron Man 3” photocall in London today (April 17).
The “Running with Scissors” starlet and the “Tropic Thunder” hunk looked to be having a blast as they hammed it up for the shutterbugs outside The Dorchester Hotel prior to the big premiere.
Robert recently told press that he gets a huge kick out of completely dismantling the false persona folks have constructed about him when he works with new costars.
"Nothing pleases me more than when somebody who was awe-inspired to be working with me realizes I'm just another schmuck that they're bored of hanging out with on a set. I love that moment. I like it when that persistent illusion is smashed."...

Title: Mental Director: Pj Hogan Starring: Toni Collette, Anthony Lapaglia, Liev Schreiber, Lily Sullivan, Rebecca Gibney, Sam Clark “Muriel’s Wedding” director Pj Hogan and star Toni Collette reunite to considerably less winning effect with “Mental,” a mad, garrulous little slice of alt-nanny comedy. As imaginative as it is indefatigable, the film nonetheless puts an overall unconvincingly quirky Australian spin on fractured-family mental health movies like Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” Dustin Lance Black’s “Virginia” and Ryan Murphy’s 2006 adaptation of Augusten Burroughs’ “Running with Scissors.” All three of those tales, among many others, take inspiration from memoirs of coming-of-age amidst mental illness, and touch on parentalized [ Read More ]

Good morning!
The Arrested Development documentary makers are seeking some finishing funds. I'm sure this will happen in no time.
Annie Clark, Cristine Prosperi and Degrassi producers Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn talked with EW and there are a lot of great tidbits about how Fiona wasn't intended to be a lesbian character but evolved into one, and the future of her relationship with Imogen. It's a must-read for Fimogen fans!
Jane Lynch went on Gwissues this week to talk about some upcoming roles. There's never enough of the Lynch.
Author Willa Cather's personal letters are about to be published and it sounds like lesbian rumors might be true. It also appears she was born on the same day as me, so clearly she must be gay. That's how it works.
Out comic artist Nicole Georges wrote about her teenage obsession with Kurt Cobain for NPR.
