Guy Pearce, an actor, spoke candidly with GQ magazine about his intention to take a break from major Hollywood studio films. He mentioned a limited creative atmosphere as limiting an actor’s artistic expression.

Pearce’s disenchantment began with the 2002 adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine.” DreamWorks and Warner Bros. produced this film, which was a critical flop and a watershed moment in Pearce’s professional career. He described the studio system as one in which actors frequently lose creative authority, leaving them powerless.

“I can’t make sense of this idea of studio films where you just get told what to do by people afraid to lose their jobs,” Pearce told the audience. He described specific instances during pre-production in which studio executives dictated his appearance without consulting him, making him feel as if his artistic instincts were neglected.

This incident exposed a larger issue in the industry.

One look at Guy Pearce’s filmography and it’s clear the actor has largely stayed away from big Hollywood studio fare over the years. One would have to go all the way back to 2013’s Marvel movie “Iron Man 3” to find Pearce’s last sizable role in a studio tentpole, although he did have smaller appearances in “Prometheus” and “Bloodshot.”

Pearce has stayed busy over the years with indie dramas and international fare, which he recently told GQ magazine was somewhat of a reaction to the bad experiences he had with a few studio films. After the success of “Memento,” Hollywood tried and failed to mold Pearce into a studio leading man with projects like 2002’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Time Machine.” The latter film, loosely based on H. G. Wells’ novel of the same name, was a notorious critical flop and a pain for Pearce to make.

The movie follow-up to Prime Video's hit series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has added its first new cast member. The four-season series, based on Tom Clancy’s Ryanverse novels, follows the titular character, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski), as he navigates high-stakes geopolitical threats and espionage. With its modernized narrative, the spy show has earned critical acclaim for Krasinski's character-driven portrayal of the intelligence officer and ranks among Prime Video's most-watched shows globally.

The upcoming Jack Ryan movie, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, promises to expand the Ryanverse beyond the television series. Directed by series alum Andrew Bernstein and penned by season 4 writer Aaron Rabin, the feature film will reportedly include familiar faces from the series while introducing new characters to the fold. Sienna Miller now stars in Netflix’s #MeToo drama “Anatomy of a Scandal,” but the film veteran says she was not aware of a massive Hollywood scandal unfolding years ago: Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment and rape of actresses.

Miller, who worked with mega-producer Weinstein on 2006’s Edie Sedgwick biopic “Factory Girl,” admitted that she was completely oblivious to Weinstein’s attacks on women at the time. The Miramax and Weinstein Company executive was convicted of rape in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Parent event Cairo International Film Festival pushing on with 42nd edition.

Upcoming features by veteran Egyptian filmmaker Yousry Nasrallah and Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania are among 15 projects selected for the 7th edition of the Cairo Film Connection (Cfc), aimed at finding partners for Arab works in development and in post-production.

The event is an integral part of the Cairo Industry Days programme of the Cairo International Film Festival (Ciff), which is pushing on with plans to hold a live 42nd edition in November in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

There were 105 project submissions from across 12 Arab countries to the Cfc this year.

Suicide Squad star Jared Leto will be the next actor to portray Andy Warhol in an upcoming movie. Taking to Instagram on Friday, Leto posted a series of photos of Warhol and revealed to his followers that he had been cast to play the legendary artist in a new project. "Yes it's true I will be playing Andy Warhol in an upcoming film. And so grateful and excited about the opportunity," Leto writes in the caption. He also wishes a happy belated birthday to Warhol, who would have turned 92 on Wednesday, and goes on to add: "We miss you and your genius."

Cairo co-production platform metes out $200,000 worth of prizes.

Lebanese director Karim Rahbani has won a place at the Rotterdam Lab next January after his feature project Shameem clinched one of the top prizes at the Cairo Film Connection (Cfc).

The co-production platform, running November 24-26 within the framework of the Cairo International Film Festival (Ciff), awarded 16 prizes worth a combined $200,000.

Shameem revolves around a young Bangladeshi man who travels to Lebanon to work in an industrial laundry.

Across his sporadic and meager filmography, director James Cox has showcased an affinity for the quintessential bad boy in stories laced with toxic testosterone, heavy drug use and gruesome violence. Cox seems to revel in tales about young white men whose reckless ambition pushes them to commit unthinkable crimes and betray their buddies. Even if the results are catastrophic, he somehow portrays their acts not as malicious and reprehensible, but as commendable endeavors gone wrong.

This questionable bro-bravado in ingrained in 2002’s “Highway” (starring baby-faced Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal), his 2003 John Holmes crime drama “Wonderland,” with Val Kilmer as the lead, and the more recent “Straight A’s,” with Ryan Phillippe and Anna Paquin. For his latest, “Billionaire Boys Club,” Cox enlists rising stars like Ansel Elgort, Emma Roberts and Taron Egerton as well as a veteran (Kevin Spacey) who up until recently could have served as a prestigious hook for the enterprise.

Timothee Chalamet is in the midst of a breakthrough year with supporting roles in “Lady Bird” and “Hostiles” and a starring performance in “Call Me by Your Name.” As a result he’s racked up two nominations at the BAFTAs: Best Actor for “Call Me” as well as the Rising Star Award for breakthrough performers. The Cannes Film Festival is currently in full swing in the south of France, and one of the movies being sold to worldwide buyers at the fest is Numb, At the Edge of the End. Vmi Worldwide has debuted the first trailer for this indie thriller, as it seeks international buyers at Cannes. The film doesn't have a release date in place yet, and it doesn't seem that the film has a domestic distributor quite yet, but that may change at the festival.

The story follows Kurt Matheson (Hayden Christensen) a war veteran with Ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder) who perceives that the end of the world is coming. After establishing a relationship with a dubious Messiah (Harvey Keitel), he leaves his normal life and begins the construction of a shelter underground, training himself in an extreme way, at the cost of losing everything. He soon makes people believe he is insane.

Hulu has announced the new titles that will be available to stream on the platform during the month of April. Leading the pack is the new original series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on Margaret Atwood’s classic novel of the same name and starring Elisabeth Moss. The series premieres April 26.

Dubai/Exclusive: Egyptian producer Mohamed Samir has boarded Wheelchair, the first narrative feature from Little Eagles director Mohamed Rashad.

The Alexandria-set drama follows an 18-year-old who makes a life-changing discovery about his uncle. The project was previously selected for the Beirut Cinema Platform co-production market while still at treatment stage in 2015.

Samir previously produced Factory Girl, directed by the late Mohamed Khan, which screened at Diff in 2013.

Rashad, whose first feature documentary Little Eagles is screening in Diff’s Muhr Feature competition, is currently scripting Wheelchair and hopes to start shooting in 2018.

Produced by Hala Lotfy, Little Eagles is an autobiographical documentary about the impact of the revolution on the relationship between Egyptian youth and their formerly leftist parents.

Respected Egyptian director Mohamed Khan has died at the age of 73 in Cairo following a sudden illness.

Khan, who made more than 20 feature-length films over his 40-year career, was known for his realistic, contemporary dramas, many of them with a social edge and featuring strong female leads.

Born in Cairo in 1942 to an Egyptian and a Pakistani father, Khan grew up in Egypt but left in his early 20s to study cinema at the London International Film School in the early 1960s.

After stints working as an assistant director in Lebanon and writing a book on Egyptian cinema back in the UK, he returned home in the early 1970s.

The 1980s were a particularly prolific period for Khan, who is regarded as a key figure in Egyptian cinema’s “1980s generation” alongside the likes of Yousry Nasrallah.
