Hollywood’s summer blockbuster season may be in full effect, with marquee releases in the vein of Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad being readied for release over the next fortnight or so, but it won’t be long before moviegoers will be knee-deep in award-tipped science fiction.
Passengers, for instance, is one that immediately springs to mind – not lest because it stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, arguably two of the most in-demand stars of the moment – while Julius Onah’s God Particle is also harboring plenty of promise. Further down the pipeline is Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller Life, which has now welcomed aboard Olga Dykhovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) to its appropriately starry ensemble.
Set to launch into orbit in March of next year, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Dykhovichnaya and Bakare will be rubbing shoulders with Jake Gyllenhaal on the International Space Station and,...

Jake Gyllenhaal is bound for the Red Planet. Proving he’s made of the right stuff, Variety brings word that the Demolition actor will star opposite Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson in Life, Skydance and Daniel Espinosa’s starry sci-fi feature.
As the title suggests, Espinosa’s – reuniting with his Safe House actor for the flick – drama centers on the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence on Mars, just don’t expect Matt Damon’s Mark Watney to be rocking out to Abba on the sun-scorched surface.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are penning the script for Life, with Paramount reportedly in line to distribute. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn are all on board to produce.

Ryan Reynolds may be game to play the Merc With a Mouth indefinitely, but there are still roles for the Canadian actor beyond 20th Century Fox’s lucrative Deadpool franchise. Case in point: Deadline is reporting that Reynolds has opened negotiations to headline upcoming Skydance thriller Life, a role that would have him star opposite Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation breakout, Rebecca Ferguson.
Should the actor put pen to paper, Skydance’s space-bound feature would have him reteaming with Safe House director Daniel Espinosa, who happens to be working from a script pitched by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, hot off their work on Deadpool. Behind the scenes, Paramount is reportedly in line to distribute, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn all on board to produce.

Not every movie can be a winner. And not every actor can be Meryl Streep.
Even Oscar nominees make bad movies and sometimes, in an unfortunate twist of fate and bad timing, that bomb, that dud, that total and complete flop, comes out at the same time as some of the best work of their life. Here are 11 times that happened in the past 10 years:
Focus Features
1. Eddie Redmayne (2015)
Nominated Role: The Theory of Everything. Redmayne is the Best Actor favorite this year for this biopic about Stephen Hawking navigating black holes and Als.
Losing Role: Jupiter Ascending. This totally effing bonkers Wachowski sci-fi flick came out just before Oscar voting started. And once you see Redmayne as Bowie-esque space prince Balem Abrasax, it cannot be unseen.
The Weinstein Company
2. Jennifer Lawrence (2013)

One of the more intriguing movies of the upcoming 2015 Sundance Film Festival features Ewan McGregor as Jesus… and Satan. It’s called “Last Days In The Desert,” and it’s directed by eclectic filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia who cut his teeth working in prestige television (“The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” “In Treatment”) and then went on to show diversity with the thriller “Passengers,” and dramas like “Mother and Child,” and “Albert Nobbs.” Doubly intriguing, the picture was also shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of “Gravity” and the about-to-be-awarded Dp of “Birdman,” so we’ll assume he has another visual treat up his sleeve. Here’s the official synopsis. Ewan McGregor is Jesus — and the Devil — in an imagined chapter from his 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, Jesus struggles with the Devil over the fate of a family in crisis,...

Ewan McGregor is darkness and light. The two-time Golden Globe nominee is playing the dual role of Jesus and the Devil in the forthcoming Sundance drama "Last Days in the Desert" - and the first photo of him as the former has arrived. It's pretty much what you'd expect - long brown hair, tattered robes, beard - but the film takes off from a different perspective than we've seen: namely, an "imagined chapter from his forty days of fasting and praying in the desert. On his way out of the wilderness, Jesus struggles with the Devil over the fate of a family in crisis, setting for himself a dramatic test." Directed by Rodrigo Garcia ("Albert Nobbs," "Passengers") and also starring Ciarán Hinds, Ayelet Zurer and Tye Sheridan, "Last Days in the Desert" is set to debut as part of Sundance's Premieres lineup. Check out the photo below. The 2015 Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan.

We've got the rare pair of writer/director assignments on horror films to share with you today: Screenwriter Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) will rewrite the Black List script for Ink and Bone, and will make his feature directorial debut on the Dimension Films picture. Relativity has set screenwriter Ronnie Christensen (Passengers) to script the psychological horror film Latitude, with Marcel Langenegger (Deception) directing. Hit the jump for more on both pictures. Deadline reports that Daugherty, who's had quite the run at scripting big-budget pictures, will step behind the camera for Ink and Bone. The spec script by Zak Olkewicz, picked up by The Weinstein Company's genre wing just last year, centers on a female book editor who visits the home of a horror writer so she can convince him to complete his novel, and soon discovers that all of his creations are holding him hostage. Fresh off the box office success of Insidious: Chapter Two and the announcement of a third Insidious pic, producer Jason Blum’s horror shingle Blumhouse Productions has set its sights on a new franchise. Deadline reports that Aaron Eckhart will lead Incarnate with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton set to helm. Penned by Ronnie Christensen (Passengers), the film follows “an unconventional exorcist who can tap into the subconscious of the possessed.” Said exorcist meets his match when he confronts his next case, a 9-year-old boy possessed by a demon from his past. Filming is poised to begin next month. Blumhouse has made a habit of churning out low budget, high profit horror pics over the past few years, starting off with the Paranormal Activity franchise and continuing with other hits like Sinister and The Purge. Peyton had been attached to helm an adaptation of the comics character Lobo for Warner Bros.,...

• Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is reportedly in talks to join Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight Rises) time-travel epic, Interstellar. She’d be joining a cast that currently includes Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey. Since she’s started getting more significant roles, Chastain has never really ventured into pure science fiction territory (we’re not counting Take Shelter). She famously dropped out of Oblivion when offered the Zero Dark Thirty role, so we’re excited for her to take on a new kind of film. The two-time Oscar nominee (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty) is currently filming Liv Ullmann...

Some big purchases were recently made – first, Anchor Bay acquired the rights to the SXSW 2012 Midnight selection Girls Against Boys, which resulted in one of the first film distribution deals at the festival. Directed by Austin Chick (Xx/Xy) and produced by Aimee Shieh and Clay Floren, the thriller follows Shea, a 21-year old student who, after a brutal sexual assault, teams up with fellow nightclub bartender Lu for a weekend of “one beautifully staged execution after another.” Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, The Crazies) and Nicole Laliberte (Dinner for Schmucks, Kaboom) play the murderous duo in the rape revenge film that has already been described as “controversial.” [Deadline]

In case you missed it Anne Hathaway was cast as Selina Kyle in the upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. As many comic fans know, Selina Kyle is the woman whose alter ego can rival Batman’s as the sexy and volatile Catwoman. In this week’s The Planet, we will take a look at what we expect of the Selina Kyle in this upcoming third film from Christopher Nolan in the most exuberant and realistic interpretations of Batman on-screen. Doing this I hope you will be able to understand the casting of Anne Hathaway in the role, who Selina Kyle is and the purpose of possibly using Catwoman in this third story.
Why Cast Anne Hathaway?
I have to believe that casting of Anne Hathaway stems from a few things ranging from her past screen exploits to her talent but also her current marketability as a well known actress.

David O. Russell Confirms Hathaway's Early Talks In 'Silver Linings,' But Nothing Is Set In Stone Yet Anne Hathaway has had a pretty good year, all in all. But she's started off the year by being more or less the best thing in the otherwise awful (but, importantly, commercially successful) "Valentine's Day," appeared in the billion-dollar…...

IFC Films will release the pic via IFC Midnight in spring 2011.

Alien prequel is starting to become a hot commodity for actors. Bloody Disgusting learned that two more names are interested in joining the cast of the “Alien” prequel. Here is what Bloody Disgusting wrote, “Both Anne Hathaway and James Franco could be suiting up for the prequel penned by ‘Lost’ scripter Damon Lindelof. Neither are signed on at this point, but you can add them to long list of potential suitors including Natalie Portman, Noomi Rapace and Carey Mulligan.” There is no casting announcement yet, but expect one an official announcement from Twentieth Century Fox and director Ridley Scott soon. And Lindelof’s script draft was just approved this month. Gig Patta’s Take: I could see Franco as part of the prequel cast, but I’m a bit uncertain about adding Hathaway to the list. Most of her film biography is romance, comedy or drama—and nothing really say horror.

Jack Nicholson at the 2007 OscarsWhen I was watching the Academy Awards last year one subject seemed to come up over and over again. Where the heck was Jack Nicholson? Long a fixture of the front row at the Kodak Theater, last year Jack was M.I.A. The Oscars just didn't seem the same without him. Hollywood didn't seem the same without him.
It wasn't just Jack either. There just aren't a lot of movie stars in Hollywood these days. They're just not producing any right now. Colin Firth, Jeremy Renner and Carey Mulligan? What gives?
Okay, let me back up. I should start out by giving you my definition of an A-List movie star. An A-Lister is someone known all over the world. By name and face. An actor just as recognizable in blue states like New York and California as they are in red states like Kansas and Alabama.

Filmmaker Rodrigo García is one of the unsung heroes of HBO's award-winning shows, most recently having directed the first season of "In Treatment." In the world of movies, he impressed many with his anthology film Nine Lives before his dramatic thriller Passengers got lost in the shuffle of the studio system. In that sense, he's still very much an underrated director who has yet to receive the respect of some of his peers. García's new movie Mother and Child seems to be solidifying García's position as the Latin Tyler Perry, not so much in terms of wealth or being insanely prolific as much as his ability to make movies centering on believable women characters and getting to the heart of what makes them tick. In this case, it's three very different women dealing with...
