Garfield fans are in for a treat that's almost as good as lasagna. On April 11, the first two live-action Garfield movies will be streaming on Hulu.
In 2004, 20th Century Fox brought Jim Davis' beloved comic strip to the silver screen with Bill Murray portraying the CGI cat. Murray's live-action co-stars included Breckin Meyer as Jon Arbuckle and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Dr. Liz Wilson, with the film's plot chronicling how the overweight and grumpy Garfield's life is thrown upside down when his owner, Jon, adopts a hyperactive young dog named Odie.
Garfield: The Movie ended up being a commercial success for 20th Century Fox, maxing over $200 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million. However, the Bill Murray-led movie based on the popular comic strip didn't do so well with critics or audiences. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, only 14% of critics' responses to the film were positive. Audiences felt similar,...

Not many shows have left a lasting impact in TV history as Frasier did. The NBC sitcom aired from 1993 until 2004, and while it was a spinoff of Cheers, it became so much more. The series had sharp dialogue, smart humor, and the perfect cast one could imagine, which earned the show a record-breaking 37 Emmy Awards during its original run.

That Roger Ebert was a tough one to figure out, especially when it came to his taste in comedies. While he loved some of the same Bill Murray movies that the rest of us find hilarious — Groundhog Day, Kingpin, the original Ghostbusters — he also had affection for oddities like Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (a review that Ebert wrote in the voice of the cat who hates Mondays).
While Ebert gave Murray credit when credit was due, the critic also had no problem kicking the comic when he was down. Here are the three Murray comedies that Ebert hated the most…
1 Charlie’s Angels
Murray was slumming when he played Bosley in the 2000 reboot of Charlie’s Angels. While the action-comedy hit had an all-star cast, featuring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz alongside Murray, Ebert could only muster up half a star. “Charlie’s Angels is eye candy for the blind,...

Aubrey Plaza has been quite the hot topic lately, from playing a dark witch in Agatha All Along to the already iconic Wow Platinum in Francis Ford Coppola's recent Megalopolis. However, her recognizable deadpan voice was put to good use long ago, and we are not referring to the likes of 'Parks and Recreation'. Aubrey Plaza voiced one of the internet's most famous memes, Grumpy Cat, in the Lifetime movie Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever (2014). As the first and last film appearance of Grumpy Cat, this made-for-television movie was (perhaps unsurprisingly) a critical bomb.
It follows the eponymous heroine as she and a young girl band together to save a mall pet store, a prize dog, and, ultimately, Christmas. Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever was directed by Tim Hill, who had also helmed other furry features, Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (2006) and Alvin and the Chipmunks...

There are few Garfield comic strips (if any) that arent utterly hilarious, but it could be argued that the many running gags in the series are the absolute funniest. The one-off gags are great, to be sure, but an ongoing story consisting of many comic strips building on the same joke is more than just funny, its a rewarding experience for the reader, as it allows them to be more fully immersed in the world of Garfield.
While Garfield has no shortage of running gags throughout the series extensive history, theres one that easily stands out as one of the all-time funniest. And the best part? This running gag is included in a months worth of Garfield comic strips that just turned 30, meaning theres no better time than right now to look back and enjoy how utterly hilarious it is. Chris Pratt is the newest voice of the titular orange cat in 2024's The Garfield Movie, and here is how Pratt's voice compares to Bill Murray's Garfield performance from the 2004 film. Garfield is one of the most iconic characters in cartoon history, with Garfield appearing in all kinds of movies, TV shows, television specials, and more since his comic strip debut. Bill Murray famously voices the orange cat in 2004's Garfield: The Movie as well as its sequel Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, but Chris Pratt's The Garfield Movie performance goes in an entirely different direction.
The character of Garfield may have started out in comic strips, but almost every fan of the character knows exactly how the cat is supposed to sound. Voice actor Lorenzo Music was the original voice of Garfield, with him voicing the cat is the vast majority of his appearances throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The Garfield Movie saw Chris Pratt take over voicing the lasagne-loving feline in a brand-new take on the Jim Davis comic strip. While the film didnt completely flop at the box office, it was heavily panned by critics, but that hasnt stopped it jumping straight to the top of the Netflix U.S. movie chart on its streaming debut.
While Pratt found huge success in 2023 voicing Nintendos beloved Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, his time in the guise of Garfield was nowhere near as successful. The film opened this May and pulled in a respectable $257 million worldwide, which was financially sound when considering the films reasonable $60 million budget. However, in comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie raked in over $1.3 billion in April 2023. Of course, the universal draw of the video game plumber has always been much more than that of the sardonic pet of Jon Arbuckle, and so it proved.

Garfield deeply treasures his stuffed bear, Pooky, as seen in comics where he confesses genuine love and joy to Pooky. Pooky and Garfield share a mischievous bond, from pranking Jon to plotting against Odie in humorous and cruel ways. While Garfield may despise Mondays, Pooky is the one thing that can make Mondays tolerable for the mischievous cat.
While Garfield is a cynical troublemaker who has an unparalleled hatred for Mondays, that shouldnt suggest that he is totally miserable all the time. In fact, there are a number of things that Garfield absolutely loves, such as golf, lasagna, and pranking Jon. However, the one thing that holds a truly special place in Garfields heart isnt a thing at all, but Garfields best friend: Pooky.
Pooky is Garfields stuffed Teddy Bear who (similar to Calvin and Hobbes titular tiger) is arguably sentient, with some comic strips leaving the nature of Pookys existence up to interpretation.

Garfield's ability to break the fourth wall adds an extra layer of humor to his mischievous antics and witty dialogue. Garfield's unique meta awareness of being a fictional character allows for clever jokes and entertaining interactions with readers. The iconic orange cat consistently keeps readers entertained by pushing the boundaries of reality within his comic strip universe.
Garfield isnt just one of the funniest, most iconic comic strips in history because of the hilarious antics the beloved fat orange cat gets up to, but because its a comic strip that isnt afraid to break the rules. Created by Jim Davis in 1978, Garfield goes above and beyond to make readers laugh, even if that means shattering the divide between reality and fiction by having Garfield break the fourth wall.
Garfield is no stranger to being hilarious by breaking the fourth wall, as hes regularly shown doing so in a number of ways.

Odie steals the spotlight from Jon and Garfield with hilarious moments that prove he's the secret Mvp of the strip. Garfield and Odie's dynamic shifts from bullying to begrudging acceptance, showcasing moments of genuine camaraderie. Odie's minimal dialogue, with only two words ever spoken, aligns him closely with Garfield's food-loving nature.
Garfield is obviously the star of Garfield, but hes far from the only main character, as the fat orange cat also shares the spotlight with his two roommates: Jon and Odie. Jon is clearly a standout character in the Garfield comic strip, especially when it comes to his hilarious back and forth with Garfield. However, on more than a few occasions, Odie actually proved to be the real star over both Jon and Garfield.
Odie originated as the dog of Jons best friend, Lyman, who briefly moved in with Jon back in the 70s. From that day on, Odie...

The Garfield Movie has now earned a cumulative total of $78.7 million at the domestic box office. This makes it the highest-performing domestic release in the franchise, surpassing 2004's Garfield: The Movie. It is still the second highest-grossing installment in the franchise worldwide.
The Garfield Movie has broken a major franchise box office record in North America. The new animated movie stars Chris Pratt in the title role as the iconic lasagna-loving, Monday-hating orange cat who originated in the 1978 Jim Davis comic strip. The Garfield Movie release kicked off overseas in early May before it opened over Memorial Day weekend at the domestic box office, taking No. 2 behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It eventually pulled ahead of the underperforming post-apocalyptic action movie to take No. 1 in its second domestic weekend.
Per Deadline, The Garfield Movie is projected to take in a 3-day total of $5.3 million by the end of its fourth weekend in domestic theaters.

The Garfield Movie perfectly captured Jim Davis' signature comedy style, reflecting the essence of his beloved comic strips. Despite low critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, the film resonated with audiences, especially children, garnering an 81% approval rating. The film's return to full animation and nostalgic humor, reminiscent of '80s and '90s cartoons, sets it apart in a sea of modern animated movies.
Despite The Garfield Movie's low critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a near-perfect adaptation of the original comic strips. A few weeks into its theatrical release, the 2024 Garfield movie has brought in over $100 million at the global box office but has only managed a 36% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This seems to imply that the film failed to do what it set out for and that another Garfield flop has been added to the long line of adaptations. Our beloved orange tabby Persian cat Garfield is back on the big screen after a long while with Chris Pratt voicing the character in The Garfield Movie. However, things were far from good which eventually affected the project at the global box office as it garnered negative reviews from critics and audiences alike.

While there’s still time for the movie to head to its streaming debut, it was unable to bring the same success that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish gained after its release two years ago.
What Went Wrong With Chris Pratt’s The Garfield Movie?
Sony’s The Garfield Movie has met with an underwhelming response from audiences and critics alike, leading to it becoming a disappointing project from what it was initially intended. One of the reasons that led to that outcome is the lead voice actor himself.

The Garfield Movie (2024) has a star-studded cast and aims to establish a new franchise with an origin story and fun new characters. Previous Garfield adaptations like A Tale of Two Kitties missed the mark with forced adventures and lackluster humor. Garfield Gets Real stands out with self-referential humor, but The Garfield Movie triumphs with a return to the character's comic roots.
The Garfield Movie has once again brought the beloved characters from Jim Davis' comic strips to the screen, but how does it compare to other adaptations? Garfield's sarcastic comments and hate for Mondays have been relatable for decades, and in the age of childhood nostalgia, it's no surprise that more movies have begun to pop up. Of course, some of these have done better at capturing the charm of Davis' comics, while others have missed the mark entirely. All these Garfield screen adaptations may contain our favorite orange tabby,...

The upcoming Garfield Movie features an ensemble cast led by Chris Pratt, with Samuel L. Jackson and other talented actors. Despite past lackluster Garfield films, this new installment has already shown promise with strong international box office numbers. Chris Pratt's track record in blockbuster films suggests he could potentially elevate Garfield into a lucrative franchise.
There have been several notable voice actors who voiced the iconic animated cat Garfield before Chris Pratt took the role in The Garfield Movie. The Garfield Movie will be the first feature film about the lasagna-loving and Monday-hating feline protagonist since 2006's Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (directed by Tim Hill), which was a sequel to 2004's Garfield: The Movie (directed by Peter Hewitt). Despite the decade-spanning popularity of the Garfield character, both films received poor reviews from critics, with the 2004 movie earning an abysmal 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and the sequel getting a score...

One of the most instantly recognizable cartoon characters of all time, Garfield is being thrust into the Hollywood spotlight once again in The Garfield Movie. While the original comic source material created by Jim Davis dates back to 1976, the beloved fuzzy orange cat remains in mainstream cinema, with three television shows, a dozen primetime specials, and two previous films: Garfield: The Movie, and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties.

The Garfield Movie debuts to a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. This score is disappointing but still an improvement over the two Bill Murray adaptations from the early 2000s. The Garfield Movie has the potential to repeat the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The Garfield Movie has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film is a big improvement over the Bill Murray movies. Directed by Mark Dindal, Pratt voices the eponymous orange cat in the upcoming film, with actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult, Snoop Dogg, and Cecily Strong rounding out the rest of the Garfield Movie cast. The movie is the latest adaptation of the iconic American comic strip character after two live-action movies in 2004 and 2006 in which Murray voiced the titular cat.
Ahead of the film's theatrical release, The Garfield Movie debuts on Rotten Tomatoes to a lackluster 49% with 37 reviews, as of this writing.

The Garfield Movie's Rotten Tomatoes score has plummeted to a dreary 52% against 31 reviews. Prior to Garfield's domestic embargo lifting, the Chris Pratt-lead animated adventure registered 67% on the Tomatometer. One critic calls The Garfield Movie "a terrible Monday of a film," and everyone knows how much the lasagna-loving cat loathes Mondays.
If Garfield hated Mondays before, its only going to get worse now. What was at one time a 67% Tomatometer reading disappeared faster than Garfield can eat a family-sized serving of hot, delicious lasagna. Before the domestic embargo for The Garfield Movie lifted in the United States, the animated adventure starring Chris Pratt was already struggling with international critics. But now the bottom has completely fallen out as the films Rotten Tomatoes score nosedives all the way to 52% as the latest reviews start to pile up. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter writes:

Consider what we know about Garfield the cat: He’s orange, a little plump, he loves lasagna, he hates Mondays, and — ah, well, that’s about it. Enough information to fill about four comic strip panels, wouldn’t you say? And yet, somehow, this lazy kitty and his very mild exploits have inspired three television series (with one more on the way), a dozen prime-time specials, and three feature-length films.
While previous cinematic iterations of Garfield’s story have stretched his adventures to wacky ends — the 2004 “Garfield: The Movie” essentially acted as an origin story, while its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” put a “Prince and the Pauper”-ish twist on his life — the latest in a long, looooooong line of Garfield adaptations goes in the opposite direction. The summer movie season could use some help, and Chris Pratt might just be here to save the day. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" actor returns to the silver screen next weekend in "The Garfield Movie," an animated take on Jim Davis' orange, Monday-hating cat. For Sony Pictures, there is one big question; can some of that Pratt magic that made "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion worldwide) such a major hit last year rub off on this one? Even a fraction of that magic would be most welcome here.
"The Garfield Movie" is opening directly against George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." While the animated, family-friendly film would typically have the edge, it looks like "Furiosa" is going to win the weekend in the early going, with an opening between $46.5 and $59 million. But that doesn't mean this cat is out of luck, as Sony...

The Garfield Movie star Chris Pratt returns to voicing childhood favorite characters in the upcoming Sony Pictures flick. Also known for voicing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the acclaimed actor reveals which titular role was harder to master.
Speaking with Comicbook.com, Pratt delved into his time portraying Garfield and Mario on the big screen and was asked which character's voice was more difficult to replicate. According to the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise store, Mario was much harder given the accent and the expectations attached to the character. "Hah, Probably the latter because Garfield, I don't do all that much," Pratt said. "I'm mostly doing my own, something similar, very similar to my own voice with Garfield or with Mario. We tried a lot of different things before landing on what was ultimately like this, like, sort of subtle, acceptable commercial Italian accent that, you know, was reminiscent of the video games,...

With a comedic heist plot and an ensemble of talented actors, The Garfield Movie aims to appeal to viewers of all ages. Sony Pictures Animation's successful track record suggests that The Garfield Movie may become a box office smash, and is projected to earn $35 million in the opening weekend.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is forecast to make between $40 million and $50 million domestically in its head-to-head match-up with The Garfield Movie over the Memorial Day weekend. The Garfield Movie is predicted to bring in $35 million and finish No. 2. Furiosa will benefit from having IMAX screens at its disposal, while Garfield will offer a family-friendly alternative for moviegoers.
In a hypothetical, fictional battle fought between Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Garfield (Chris Pratt) in Mad Maxs live-action dystopian world, it seems pretty likely the furball loses royally. However, in the animated world of the lasagna-loving house cat, Garfield is likely okay, so it looks bad for the fat feline there, too. Now, consider The Garfield Movie and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga are both opening on May 24 to headline Memorial Day weekend. So, which one walks away the winner at the box office? Well, early projections give the edge to Furiosa.

Joe Pasquale has a Pampers advert and Bob Hoskins to thank for landing a role in 2006’s Garfield movie: more here.
If you’re reading this from the UK, then you may already be acquainted with the work of comedian Joe Pasquale, whose all-but-trademarked squeaky voice is a distinctive part of his act. It’s also a voice that’s earned him a lot of professional voiceover work, and one of those jobs many moons ago was for a nappy advert.
As he explained on the Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, he was hired to do one particular Pampers campaign with the late Bob Hoskins. Unusually, the pair were to sit in a recording booth together, rather than record their lines separately. Yet as Pasquale explained, Hoskins didn’t believe the sound coming out of his co-star was quite right. “That voice… I’ve never heard it come...

Garfield's appearance has changed drastically over the years, from being a fat cat with small eyes to a more expressive and anthropomorphic design. The redesign in 1984 made Garfield more cartoon-like and relatable to those who own orange cats, enhancing the humor in the comics. Despite various adaptations and films, Garfield's overall design has remained relatively consistent, solidifying him as the beloved character we know today.

Fans express support for Bill Murray's portrayal of Garfield, preferring him over Chris Pratt. Some viewers criticize Chris Pratt's portrayal, stating that there are better actors for the role and adding that they dislike the portrayal of Garfield's father. Despite differing opinions, many fans still plan on watching the movie, although they find Chris Pratt's portrayal odd compared to Bill Murray's.
After the trailer release of the upcoming The Garfield Movie, fans jump to support Bill Murray’s portrayal of the cat. The trailer for The Garfield Movie has now made its online debut. Sony Pictures Animation is bringing to life one of the most famous lazy felines in the world. The last time Garfield had graced the silver screen was in 2006’s Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, the sequel to 2004’s Garfield, which featured Bill Murray as the titular voice that originated with Lorenzo Music, who poetically also voiced the Bill Murray role in The Real Ghostbusters. Famously, Murray had admitted to taking the role under the mistaken assumption that he was working with one of the Coen brothers (the movie was written by Joel Cohen – unrelated to the beloved duo).

Chris Pratt embodies the world’s most sarcastic yet endearing orange feline in the trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” premiering in theaters on May 24, 2024.
The new animated feature introduces new characters to comic creator Jim Davis’ universe, including Samuel L. Jackson as Vic, Garfield’s father. Both Pratt and Jackson have been honing their voice acting chops, with Jackson playing another animated cat in “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” and Pratt portraying Mario in “The Super Mario Bros. Movies starring animals can entertain audiences with their comedic and heartfelt stories. Everyone has their favorite dog movie that's capable of making them both laugh and cry. While some animal stories can entice and emotionally move viewers, others strangely rely on too much comedy or fantasy, ultimately leading to their detriment.
Animated movies like Shark Tale focus too much on cheap laughs and overused plot lines to provide anything of substance. Furthermore, popular animal characters in Tom & Jerry and Garfield feel like soulless reproductions in their film adaptations. Some of the worst animal movies either have poor production or overly strange storylines that leave audiences scratching their heads. Whether they are animated or live-action, these films lean too heavily on either comedic or straight-up bizarre themes for them to leave a proper impact.

It should come as no surprise that Alcon’s Garfield movie is based on Jim Davis’ celebrated comic strip focusing on an orange, lazy, lasagna-loving feline, his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and Jon’s pet dog Odie. When Garfield isn’t making life a living hell for Jon and his canine companion, he waxes rhapsodic about the world, his perpetual hunger, and hatred of Mondays. Plot details about Alcon’s Garfield movie are unknown at this time. However, we know Pratt is voicing the iconic cat while Jackson is playing Garfield’s father, Vic.
Reports do not indicate who Waddingham, Rhames, Hoult, and Strong will play. However, if I had to venture a guess,...

After more than 15 years, America’s most iconic cat is finally returning to the big screen.
In 2024, we’re looking forward to the release of “Garfield,” the long-awaited film starring Jim Davis’ iconic comic strip character. The movie will, incredibly, be the first fully-animated theatrical project starring the lasagna-eating grouch, who first appeared in newspaper comic sections in 1978. Although the franchise has remained enormously popular in the decades since its launch, Garfield’s only theatrical films were two live action/CGI projects starring Bill Murray as the character. After the second film, “A Tale of Two Kitties,” bowed in 2006, the franchise remained off the bigscreen for years, in favor of direct-to-dvd films and television shows.
News of Garfield’s animated return first broke in 2016, when Alcon Entertainment secured the exclusive rights to developing animated features based on the character. Although the project remained dormant for several years, 2021 saw an uptick in news about the film,...

The world’s most famous fat cat is coming to theaters soon. “Garfield,” an animated film starring Chris Pratt as the famous Jim Davis comic strip character, will premiere in theaters Feb. 16, 2024.
In addition to Pratt, the film will also star Samuel L. Jackson as a brand-new character to the Garfield universe, Vic, who is the father of the orange feline. The plot that will bring Garfield’s father back into his life remains under wraps. Although no other cast members have been announced, the film will presumably feature classic characters from the franchise, including his owner Jon Arbuckle and dim-witted puppy Odie.
The animated movie represents the latest big screen outing for the iconic lasagna-loving misanthrope. Bill Murray famously voiced the character in two live-action and CGI-hybrid films, 2004’s “Garfield: The Movie” and its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” The two films received largely negative reviews, but were both commercially successful.

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

The recently-launched Strong Studios has acquired rights to Alec Sokolow’s script The Tank Job, setting the Oscar nominee as the film’s director.
The Ballantyne Strong, Inc. subsidiary’s first original feature film adapts Norman Miller’s book, The Great Salad Oil Swindle. It’s a true-life crime drama that watches as ex-butcher turned salad oil exporter Anthony “Tino” DeAngelis and his Bayonne, New Jersey blue collar crew nearly destroy American Express and eventually crash Wall Street in their bid to corner the market on salad oil futures in the early 1960s.
Award-winning business journalist, CNBC contributor, author and former hedge fund manager Ron Insana, who heads up Insana Entertainment Group as CEO, brought the idea for The Tank Job to Ballantyne Chairman Kyle Cerminara in January of last year, and they have been collaborating on it ever since.
