When you think of 1960s sci-fi shows, what titles come to mind? The earliest, campiest iteration of "Star Trek" is a no-brainer, as is anthology standard-bearer "The Twilight Zone." You might recall "Lost in Space," the original run of "Doctor Who," or even "The Jetsons," but the chances are "The Invaders" won't be on the tip of most peoples' tongues.
The short-lived ABC series about an alien invasion was unlike any other show of its time, but it remains more a cult classic than a part of the zeitgeist to this day. "The Invaders" ran for two seasons, with future "Perfect Strangers," "The Stuff," and "Maniac Cop" writer Larry Cohen as its mastermind and prolific early TV producer Quinn Martin executive producing. Unlike the flying saucer stories that would populate the decades to come, "The Invaders" was more a paranoid bureaucratic thriller than a little green men-filled horror story. Roy Thinnes,...

When it comes to physical media, there always has to be a concern for degradation. We saw it with VHS, Cassette Tapes, and Laser Discs. Eventually they become unwatchable. DVD was supposed to fix that issue, giving us the same experience each time, and with a much longer shelf life than laser discs (which are currently dropping like flies). And judging on Bumbray’s article about Warner Bros titles, the issue is as present as ever. But those are DVDs. That’s two whole generations ago and there’s a reason we’ve since switched! What about Blu-rays?
Blu-rays were actually made with the intention of lasting 100 years. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues that spring up. Any discs that have two layers, such as Bd-50s (which have 50 Gb of storage versus 25 Gb for standard) are more likely to degrade as...

Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.
In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

Science fiction films are a staple of modern Hollywood's slate of blockbusters, with franchises that feature space-faring adventure, futuristic technology and other-worldly creatures being some of the highest-grossing movies of the last few decades. Science fiction movies also have a long history in Hollywood, dating all the way back to the classic films of Geroge Mellies like A Trip to the Moon.
But many science fiction films do not stand the test of time, or fail to meet the expectations of audiences on release, as evidenced by Roger Ebert's scathing reviews of many of the films he had to see in that genre. The worst that science fiction movies have to offer throw away the genre's roots in telling tales about deep themes, replacing human stories with cheap thrills.

It’s mid-July and I’m sitting in my living room, wondering what Ben Burtt, a man responsible for some of the most beloved cultural artifacts of the 20th century, will think of the decor. He appears on my screen calling from Locarno, where he’s just received a lifetime achievement award. I start by thanking him genuinely for his contributions to cinema, and something in that choice of words makes him blush.
Burtt was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1948. Like many of his contemporaries, he got his start in the industry working at Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, making sound effects on the trailer for Death Race 2000. From there his credits more or less read like a greatest-hits of American popular culture. In his roll as sound designer, Burtt is credited with creating Chewbacca’s roar, the lightsaber’s hum, and the crack of Indiana Jones’ whip.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic rights to the survival thriller “Titan” from north.five.six. and Constantin Film, TheWrap has exclusively learned.
The film recently wrapped production in Colombia. “Titan” stars Kiana Madeira (“Fear Street” trilogy) and Jessica Rothe and Logan Marshall-Green. The film also stars Will Close and Jackson Bews.
“Titan” is set against the backdrop of Brazil’s Curuçá River in the present day. When a team of young doctors embark on a local humanitarian mission through the Amazon rainforest, it soon becomes clear that not everyone – or everything – is happy to see them. Their arrival draws the attention of an ancient predator, the “Boiúna.” This ancient killer, dominant on land and water, clashes with the group to reclaim the jungle. What follows is a fight for survival in which the roles of hunter, prey and hero become unpredictable.
The film is written by Tony Giglio and Alan McElroy.

Too often, great TV shows -- particularly horror shows -- are gone before they even have a chance to shine. It's often one of the most frustrating things about being a fan. A series will come along with a fresh perspective, compelling characters, and just enough scares to keep you hooked, only for the network to pull the plug after just one season, with either storylines and mysteries left unresolved or the potential for more standalone stories cut short. Horror shows do seem to be particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon, often getting the axe before they can sink their teeth into a loyal audience.
Many horror series were, in fact, canceled after just a single season, despite having the potential to become cult classics. These series may not have had the longest runs, but their creativity, ambition, and ability to unsettle viewers left an unforgettable impression. From grindhouse-inspired gorefests to cerebral nightmares,...

Max continues to be the place for Jason Statham fans to get their fix. The platform is already the home of Meg 2: The Trench, Homefront and Death Race, and, come February 1, they’ll be unearthing yet another Statham classic: Mechanic: Resurrection. What do you get when you mix a hunky Englishman, a badass female action hero, and two Academy Award winners? Well, in this very specific case, you end up with a high-octane thriller helmed by Dennis Gansel. With a 31% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie might fall behind Statham’s higher scoring works like Spy, Furious 7 and The Bank Job, but it should still be in any Statham-lover’s queue when it works its way onto HBO’s streamer next month.

Modern audiences may be familiar with Paul W. S. Anderson’s Death Race, starring Jason Statham and Tyrese Gibson. In the high-adrenaline film, the head of a privatized prison earns millions by broadcasting "Death Race," a vehicular combat racing series where dangerous inmates battle each other in weaponized and armored cars with the goal of winning their freedom. Among the racers is a masked driver named Frankenstein (Statham). However, the story isn’t entirely original.

The Brutal, Bonkers Jason Statham Action Remake That Almost Starred Tom Cruise Just Crashed Into Max
Remaking films is usually an ill-advised plan, especially since studios make the dumbfounding decision to re-imagine a cherished classic (everyone's been saying for years that we ought to be remaking misfires that deserve a second shot). In the 2000s, remakes of genre classics from the '70s were en vogue, notably in the horror genre with Dawn of the Dead, The Amityville Horror, and Halloween. With the advent of digital effects and a boom in retro culture, these low-budget cult classics, which were being reappraised by modern criticism, became highly sought-after properties. While Death Race 2000, the 1975 exploitation film produced by B-movie master Roger Corman, is no sacred text, remaking this genre staple was a tall task, and what it amounted to was Death Race, a misbegotten effort by Paul W.S. Anderson and star Jason Statham, which began as a Tom Cruise vehicle.

Jason Statham’s Death Race has had a rough go at things since it premiered on Max at the start of the month. The film quickly raced into the top 10 but never could reach any higher than #8, before it began to sink back down and is now out of the top 10 entirely. This is unfamiliar territory for Statham who generally finds extraordinary streaming success with his movies regardless of their critical reception or box office numbers. Death Race follows an ex-con who is forced by the warden to compete in a race where inmates kill each other. Fast & Furious icon Tyrese Gibson and John Wick veteran Ian McShane also star in the film, which earned a 41% score from critics and a 60% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jason Statham has made a name for himself in the action genre, and his films grossed millions of dollars at the box office. Although the British actor is usually typecast in the action-thriller genre, one of his underrated sci-fi films has become a new hit on streaming platforms.
In 2008, Statham starred in Death Race, which was a remake of the 1975 classic Death Race 2000. The sci-fi, high-octane action thriller has recently switched platforms, and it's already a hit on social media, taking over the Top 10 and positioning itself in the eighth position, ScreenRant reports. The film bested Megamind and Ninja Assasin, making a strong debut on the streaming platform.

Action movie legend Jason Statham's 2008 sci-fi thriller impresses on its new streaming debut, just four days after switching platforms. Statham shot to fame when he was cast in the role of Bacon in Guy Ritchie's directorial debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and paired with him again for a leading role in Snatch. The critical and commercial success of the movies led to him starring in The Transporter trilogy and movies like Crank, The Italian Job remake, Hummingbird, and Safe, further cementing him as one of Hollywood's leading action stars.
Statham has continued to carve out a niche in the action-thriller genre, with a few showings against type, such as a supporting role in the romantic drama London, and a memorable co-starring turn in the action-comedy Spy. Action aficionados are in for a treat this holiday season, as Jason Statham’s Death Race speeds onto Max starting December 1. The 2008 action thriller, a remake of the cult classic Death Race 2000, which starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine, delivers Statham-esque high-octane excitement and intense stakes that fans have come to love from the bald British brutalizer. The movie follows Statham as Jensen Ames, a wrongfully imprisoned speedway champion who’s offered a dangerous deal: compete in a lethal, weaponized car race to earn his freedom or rot behind bars forever. Armed with flamethrowers and grenade launchers, Ames must make his way through a gauntlet of hardened criminals. Let's hope he's got a good Spotify playlist to get through that one.

A long-awaited Jason Statham action movie sequel just got a hugely promising update. Statham is now a full-fledged member of the Fast and Furious family, so much so that, back in 2019, The Stath co-led his own action movie spin-off alongside fellow action icon Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw saw huge success at the box office, and while both Statham and Johnson continue to feature in the Fast and Furious franchise, there has been little word on a Hobbs and Shaw sequel. Until now.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hobbs and Shaw writer Chris Morgan has now revealed that he is currently writing a Hobbs & Shaw kind of script. Which we can only assume means hes working on bringing Stathams Deckard Shaw and Johnsons Luke Hobbs back together again on the big screen.

Jason Statham's $75 million sci-fi action movie remake is getting a new streaming home in December. Earlier in 2024, Statham enjoyed one of his biggest box office successes in years, when his politically charged, John Wick-inspired action film The Beekeeper unexpectedly took in $152 million worldwide. Statham may now have a new franchise on his hands, as director David Ayer has hinted that The Beekeeper 2 could happen.
Statham has been a reliable action stalwart for years, thanks to films like The Beekeeper, as well as high-profile projects like The Meg and Fast & Furious, and more cult-friendly fare like Crank and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The star indeed boasts a long filmography filled mostly with action-packed titles, many of which are available on streaming platforms, allowing for at-home exploration of every nook and cranny of Statham's lengthy resume.

"Framed for a murder he did not commit, three-time speedway champ Jensen Ames (Statham) finds himself at Terminal Island, the country's toughest prison, but he gets an unexpected chance at freedom when the warden offers a choice: Compete in the Death Race as a mythical driver called 'Frankenstein,' or rot in a cell forever," reads the movie's synopsis. "Riding in a car equipped with flamethrowers and grenade launchers, Ames must survive a gauntlet of vicious criminals to win his freedom -- or die trying."

Getting new or completed material from George R.R. Martin seems to be a tall order these days. But thankfully, his back-catalog of writing is a treasure trove that Paul W.S. Anderson is dipping into for his latest project with spouse and long-time collaborator Milla Jovovich, and first-time collaborator/not spouse Dave Bautista. Their fantasy epic In Lost Lands is slated to hit theaters February 25th, 2025, and Martin shared a new image, which you can see below, on his blog.

Jason Statham is undeniably one of the silver screen's most celebrated action superstars, and since his dazzling film debut in Guy Ritchie's 1998 black crime comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, he has steadily become one of the most famous faces of the adrenaline-pumping genre. Known for portraying cool, calm, and tough-as-nails characters, Statham has emerged as one of Hollywood's most bankable leading men and his exhilarating movies have grossed more than $1.5 billion while also attracting a passionate fanbase along the way.
Statham has starred in a slew of big budget extravaganzas throughout his impressive cinema career, appearing in popular flicks like the Transporter trilogy, The Mechanic, The Expendables, and the enduring Fast & Furious franchise (to name just a few). Despite being a major box office draw, the charismatic actor has also been in his fair share of critical duds (even if audiences felt differently), with respected film...

The 1970s was a huge decade for cinema. In 1975, Steven Spielberg's Jaws hit theaters in June after being delayed for several months. Originally, Jaws was supposed to be a Christmas release, but due to complications with production (like the mechanical shark constantly breaking), the film was delayed. Jaws wasn't expected to do well due to the summer release date, but Jaws sold so many tickets that it single-handedly created the summer blockbuster phenomenon.
Jaws isn't the only iconic film to come out of the 1970s, though. The '70s gave birth to Halloween's (1978) Michael Myers and Alien's (1979) xenomorph. This decade saw rapid advancement in what could be accomplished for convincing movies. It also had an abundance of cheesy movies that were as iconic as they were cringey. Movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) go down in cinema history as some of the funniest and cheesiest movies ever made.

Ayrton Senna will be brought to the screen in Netflix’s miniseries Senna, played by Gabriel Leone. The actor earlier played the role of racing driver Alfonso de Portago in Michael Mann’s Ferrari. The film follows the life of Senna from the beginning of his career to the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Senna met a tragic end during the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy in 1994 when his car collided with a concrete wall at high speed. The crash occurred when he was leading in the seventh lap. The incident happened a day after fellow driver Roland Ratzenberger met a similar fate when he struck a concrete wall during the second qualifying session.
The new series hits the streamer on November 29. The life of the racing champion was earlier covered in the 2010 BAFTA-winning documentary film Senna. Apart from this heart-wrenching story,...

Celebrated for his exceptional physical prowess and tough-as-nails on-screen persona, action great Jason Statham has been entertaining audiences for decades since he first made his spectacular film debut in Guy Ritchie's 1998 classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The cool, calm, and collected leading man has appeared in an array of box office knockouts over the course of his stellar career, including The Transporter, The Italian Job, Spy, and The Expendables, and in 2008 he headlined the action thriller Death Race.

Jason Statham remade not one, but two movies by Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds - it's just a shame their only collaboration sucked so much. Despite making his name in Guy Ritchie gangster comedies, Statham soon made a dramatic gear shift in his career. The Jason Statham action movie era began in earnest with 2001's Ghosts of Mars, but it was The Transporter that proved his big breakthrough. Like any leading man, he has had his peaks and valleys, but the box office success of The Beekeeper proves Statham is still on top of his game.
He has remade several cult classics in the action genre too. Statham fronted the remake of Charle Bronson's The Mechanic and played the lead in the reboot of the Death Race franchise. One of the earliest remakes young Statham appeared in was Mean Machine, where he played a violent prisoner named Monk who takes part...

Sylvester Stallone's upcoming thriller Armor could finally break a bad cinematic habit the actor has stuck to for 46 years. Following the shock success of Rocky in 1976, Stallone was touted as the successor to actors like Marlon Brando. Unfortunately, many of his non-Rocky follow-ups were duds, and the success of First Blood saw the star become typecast in the action genre. Decades later, Sylvester Stallone's action movies are a subgenre onto themselves, with recent examples including 2023's The Expendables 4.
It doesn't appear that the screen legend will be abandoning the genre in the near future. Some upcoming projects include the thriller Alarum alongside Reacher star Willa Fitzgerald and Armor. The trailer for Armor sees Stallone lead a band of thieves robbing an armored truck, only to find themselves in a tense standoff with the guards trapped inside. The movie looks like a tight little thriller - even if the premise...

Tyrese Gibson and Terrence Howard have shared the screen twice. The duo first appeared together in 2005’s Four Brothers and reunited in 2022’s The System. While both actors share a friendly bond on-screen, Gibson had serious issues with Terrence Howard’s role in the latter’s critically acclaimed Empire series.

Jason Statham's best movie scenes highlight the actor's talents as an action star and surprisingly effective comedy performer. After working in markets during his youth and finding jobs in the world of athletics and modeling, Statham made his big-screen debut in 1998 in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. His early collaborations with Guy Ritchie got Statham noticed, with subsequent films like The Transporter cementing Statham as one of the best action actors in modern movies.

A movie like Michael Leavys Stream will always intrigue me as a horror fan. Theres something about the repulsive nature of forbidden internet reaches and social media clout-chasing that maximizes genre commentaries. Scripting reflects the addicting game show vibes in examples from Death Race to Hostel: Part III to Slashers with a dash of Saw. Leavys brand of terror exploits marketable violence for the masses, but the problem is, weve now seen this streaming massacre model redone a thousand times. You have to compare and contrast what Stream brings to the table, which struggles to be enough.

The Apple TV+ series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," like the film series that inspired it, skips around dramatically throughout history. Recall that "Kong: Skull Island," which came out after 2014's "Godzilla," was set mostly in 1973 after opening with a flashback to 1944. "Legacy of Monsters" likewise jumps back and forth a lot, exploring a present-day timeframe c. 2015 and a much earlier timeline set in the mid-1950s. To show the legacy of humans that work at Monarch -- the secret government agency assigned to oversee and wrangle kaiju -- both time frames feature the character Lee Shaw. In the 1950s, Shaw was one of the founding members of Monarch. In the '10s, he becomes re-immersed in Monarch after encountering the show's lead character, Cate (Anna Sawai).
In the 1950s, Shaw is played by Wyatt Russell, the star of "Overlord," "Everybody Wants Some!!," and "Night Swim." In the '10s segments,...

When the Roger Corman-produced "Death Race 2000" was released in 1975, the film earned a poor critical reception. Major criticisms included a lack of depth in terms of its themes of anarchy and rebellion, with its campy entertainment factor not being enough to offset its overt sleaziness. However, just like every film that's gone on to attain cult status, "Death Race 2000" underwent critical reappraisal over the years and is now deemed a cult classic -- one whose indulgent and excessive violence has emerged as one of its strengths.
A sequel to "Death Race 2000," titled "Death Race 2050," wasn't made until 2017. However, there's more: Paul W. S. Anderson's 2008 reboot of Corman's original — the confusingly titled "Death Race" — is also meant to be a prequel. The film traces the crash of the U.S. economy and the rapid rise in crime rates, which birth the titular gladiator-style closed-track race...

Statham's history of action films prepared him for a recurring role in the Fast & Furious franchise. Fast Five's safe heist outshines Statham's heist in Revolver, showcasing a grander scale and more excitement. The intense action sequence in Fast Five serves as the movie's climax, making it bigger and better than Revolver's heist.
Jason Statham executed one of Fast Five's biggest, most eye-catching stunts in a movie directed by Guy Ritchie six years prior. Well before Fast Five's 2011 premiere, Statham was increasingly evolving into his action star persona, featuring in the classic The Transporter and The Expendables franchises, as well as in one-off action flicks like The Bank Job, The Italian Job, and Death Race. Since then, Statham's action career has led him into renowned roles, including Adam Clay in the $152 million action thriller The Beekeeper and Deckard Shaw in the latter half of the Fast & Furious franchise.

The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. Death Race movies have two distinct continuities, the 1975 original and the 2008 reboot, making for a unique viewing experience. Each film in the Death Race franchise can stand alone, but watching in chronological order adds depth to the Frankenstein character. Despite some lackluster entries, the Death Race movies deliver pulse-pounding car action and a unique sci-fi tone.
Watching the Death Race movies in order is no easy task, as the beloved exploitation franchise has been split into two different continuities over the years. Starting with the release of Roger Corman's sci-fi carsploitation classic Death Race 2000 in 1975, the dystopian franchise has seen plenty of twisted metal and high-octane thrills even as it was split into distinct continuities that have totally diverged. Noted for its bleak outlook on the future, and exciting car stunts, the Death Race movies deliver on pulse-pounding car action no matter which filmmaker is behind the wheel.

Statham's humble beginnings as a market vendor directly led to his successful movie career. Guy Ritchie cast Statham in Lock Stock due to his authentic background, adding to the film's realism. Statham's natural theatricality from his past job translated seamlessly to his entertaining onscreen charisma.
As wild as it might sound, Jason Statham owes his entire movie career to an old job that he has long since abandoned. Jason Statham has one of the most impressive action careers in recent Hollywood history. While Jason Stathams highest-grossing movies prove that he can headline a major blockbuster franchise like The Meg movies or the Fast & Furious series, the Crank movies and comedies like Spy prove that he also has killer taste for personal projects. At his best, Statham combines his offbeat taste with mainstream appeal for hits like 2024s $140 million success The Beekeeper.
All of this has resulted in Statham accruing...

The history of gaming is often charted by citing milestone releases. We love them, you love them, and we’ve all talked about them. However, the cultural prevalence of those games means that they sometimes dominate the conversation in a way that leads to other games being lost in the shuffle. Not just lesser releases, mind you, but games that changed the industry in many ways.
Today, we’re going to look at a few of those games. While we sadly won’t be able to discuss all the games that deserve to be talked about in relation to this particular subject, we hope that shining a light on a few of these titles will reveal entirely new ways to look at the evolution of gaming.
Colossal Cave Adventure (1976/1977)
At the very least, Colossal Cave Adventure has to be considered the first adventure game. However, even that statement sells its accomplishments short.
