On Saturday night, "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin broke the "Saturday Night Live" hosting record, helming the show for a 16th time, meaning he passed Steve Martin's record. (More on that later.) Lorne Michaels just never gets tired of him!
There were no additions to the "SNL" cast this year, and all of last season's cast members stuck around -- we'll let you guys decide whether that's a good thing.
Note to readers: Adam Sandler didn't actually appear on this episode of "Saturday Night Live." Those ads for "Jack and Jill," the movie where he plays a man and the man's sister? Those were real. That's a real movie that someone greenlighted. It will be in theaters in November. Seriously. The ads for "Whitney"? Also real. Sorry, America.
Opener: The only thing SNL does better than Stefon: Making fun of republicans. The Gop Debate skit was hosted by Bill Hader...

He’s not acted in a film for a long time, but we still can’t help celebrating the majesty of Mr Rick Moranis. And here, for your deliberation, are his ten finest movies…
Given that he went into retirement from acting back over a decade ago now, for personal reasons, it's perhaps not too surprising that Rick Moranis' back catalogue of movies isn't as bountiful as many of his contemporaries. Yet, Moranis certainly knew how to make a comedy mark (although, as we'll discover, there's more to the man than that). And while the 10 films we're going to talk about here are of mixed quality, the common feature is that Moranis delivers a performance that tends to stand out.
I should note from the outset, incidentally, that we're not going anywhere near the risible movie of The Flintstones here. But that's just common sense for all concerned.

Kyle Gallner stars in Losers Take All which recently started filmingAlex Steyermark, director of Prey for Rock and Roll and One Last Thing... will direct Kyle Gallner of recent A Nightmare on Elm Street fame as well as Warehouse 13 star Allison Scagliotti and Tania Raymonde of Lost in the upcoming film Losers Take All. The picture began principal photography earlier this week in and around Memphis, Tennessee. The cast also includes Alexia Rasmussen (Listen to Your Heart), Aaron Himelstein (Joan of Arcadia, The Informers), Billy Kay (Yelling to the Sky), Adam Herschman (Soul Men, Accepted) and newcomer Peter Brensinger.
Losers Take All, set in the world of mid-1980's American independent rock music, follows a fictional punk/pop band "The Fingers" as they stumble, stagger and strum their way in what everyone thinks is the opposite direction of success--commercial or otherwise. But they are in the right place at...

Now that Ben Lyons has gotten the boot from At the Movies, we no longer need to yell, "You lie!" at our TV screens each week. And with summer behind us, let's see what's shaking this week on the big screen.
Opening on 9/9/09 was, of course, 9, a bleak but beautiful animated feature about doll-like creatures — they're already calling the style of this stop-motion animated feature "stitchpunk" — fighting for survival in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape.
While the storyline didn't thrill me, I was taken by director Shane Acker's stunning visuals and by his ability to create distinct personalities for his lead characters (who all have names such as 9, 2 and 6).
He's helped greatly with the latter by a terrific cast of actors, including Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Connelly and Crispin Glover. 9 is way, way too bleak and disturbing for little kids — who should totally see...

Sandra Bullock: Is it a bad thing we're opening Labor Day Weekend?
Bradley Cooper: Whatever. It's not like we were ever an Oscar contender.
An editor of mine recently observed how odd it is that Memorial Day weekend is such a big-deal launching pad for summer movies while the three-day Labor Day holiday is generally where the mediocre (and the downright awful) go to die.
Let it be known that 2009 doesn't deviate from that formula with this weekend's big nationwide releases.
If you thought Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Ugly Truth were as witless and inane as movies were going to get this summer, you clearly haven't seen All About Steve, a ramshackle rom-com so blisteringly stupid and off-the-rails that you find yourself wondering if anyone in the production has ever met a human being.
Sandra Bullock (who also produced, so she can't blame anyone else) stars as Mary Magdalene Horowitz,...

Tribeca fest unveils fare for families
NEW YORK -- The Tribeca Film Festival announced its Tribeca Family Festival lineup Thursday, including T4Teens, a new section of films for young adults. The 15-feature slate includes a mix of studio and indie fare: Charles Sturridge's remake of Lassie, starring Peter O'Toole, Peter Dinklage and Samantha Morton; Barry Sonnenfeld's RV, featuring Robin Williams as a father on a cross-country family trip; and Ted Wilde's classic 1927 silent film Speedy, starring legendary comedian Harold Lloyd. The four-film T4Teens section features Danny Cannon's soccer fable Goal! The Dream Begins and Alex Steyermark's comic look at a terminally ill teen with a final wish, One Last Thing.
