Disney+'s Andor is returning for its highly-anticipated second and final season on April 22. Tony Gilroy, who created the seriesand worked as a writer on 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, says he's done with the franchise after Season 2 wraps.
"It's not really part of my plan," Gilroy told Collider. "I've been peripherally involved [with the franchise] for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that's a pretty big chunk of my life. There are other things to do. I think when it's done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I'm feeling guilty about not chipping in," he added.
Gilroy has had a long career in filmmaking, having worked on films like The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Michael Clayton, and Duplicity. When asked what the future holds, Gilroy said he wants to get back into directing.

Why Does George Clooney Want To Keep His Batman Movie Away From His Son? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
George Clooney is one of Hollywood’s most revered actors, known for his demeanor, versatility, and performances in films like Ocean’s Eleven, Michael Clayton, and Up in the Air. However, despite his impressive filmography, one role remains a sore spot for him: his portrayal of the Caped Crusader in Batman & Robin (1997). Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film took a campy approach to The Dark Knight, a stark contrast to the brooding tone set by Tim Burton’s earlier Batman films.
Although Clooney acknowledged that the film was not well-received and even apologized, his role as Batman remains a talking point. Interestingly, the actor now actively avoids discussing it with his young son, fearing that it would ruin his credibility. Despite being a household name and an Oscar-winning actor, Clooney jokingly admits that...

Tilda Swinton got political as she accepted Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement at its opening ceremony on Thursday night, saying “the inhumane is being perpetrated on our watch.”
In a poetic speech, the Oscar winner lauded the festival as “a borderless realm with no policy of exclusion, persecution or deportation.” The “great independent state of cinema,” she added, is “innately inclusive — immune to efforts of occupation, colonization, takeover, ownership or the development of riviera property.”
She then acknowledged that “state-perpetrated and internationally-enabled mass murder is currently actively terrorizing more than one part of our world,” though she didn’t go into specifics.
“These are facts. They need to be faced,” Swinton continued. “So for the sake of clarity, let’s name it. The inhumane is being perpetrated on our watch. I’m here to name it without hesitation or doubt in my mind and to lend...

For Christmas one year, I gave my grandpa a DVD box set of the early "Seinfeld" seasons. My dad thought it was a silly gift because a now-classic show like "Seinfeld" would probably have reruns until the end of time. So far, my dad has been right. Even as streaming has transformed the television landscape, the availability and appeal of "Seinfeld" shows no signs of fading. In fact, it's this ongoing popularity that helped turn director Rob Reiner's production company, Castle Rock Entertainment, into a cash cow.
Named after Stephen King's famous setting on the Maine coast, Castle Rock Entertainment is an American independent film and television production company founded in 1987 by Rob Reiner, Martin Shafer, Andrew Scheinman, Glenn Padnick, and Alan Horn. The company produced numerous acclaimed independent films, including Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy, several Stephen King adaptations such as "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption,...

Tilda Swinton stars alongside Xin Zhilei (“Blossoms Shanghai”) and Chinese pop artist Leah Dou in a short film directed by Oscar-nominated German filmmaker Wim Wenders for Chanel’s 2024-2025 Métiers d’Art show which celebrates artistry and craftsmanship.
The show will take place Dec. 3 by the scenic West Lake in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. The latter provides a fitting backdrop for the Metiers d’Art show, given the city’s vibrant heritage of silk manufacturing and trade. The lush landscapes and lakes of Hangzhou have been a source of inspiration for many artists, notably Chanel founder Gabrielle Chanel whose imagination is reflected in Wenders’ film.
In her Paris home, Gabrielle Chanel contemplated the lake everyday, as rendered on a Chinese lacquer screen that adorned her private office at her home on Rue Cambon and was part of a collection of some twenty Coromandel pieces, dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries,...

“It’s a good chance to reflect about mortality,” explained writer-director Pedro Almodóvar about his film “The Room Next Door,” which was the centerpiece selection at the 62nd New York Film Festival. “This is something that at least in my life is very present.” So when he read the proposition in Sigrid Nunez‘s novel “What Are You Going Through,” where a terminally ill woman asks her friend to assist in her suicide, the filmmaker was “very surprised.” Watch his discussion with actors Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, and John Turturro above.
“I thought that that was a very good sequence to develop between two actresses and two characters that they feel in a very different way in front of mortality,” Almodóvar added. Ultimately, Martha (Swinton) wants to end her life on her own terms, and Ingrid (Moore) is terrified at the prospect, but Swinton feels the meaning of the film...

We’re making a major switch in our Gold Derby Oscars 2025 predictions center. Previous Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton will now be in the Best Actress category for “The Room Next Door” instead of Best Supporting Actress, where she had 15/2 odds in fourth place. She will now be in a leading category with her co-star Julianne Moore, also a previous Oscar champ, who is currently in ninth place with 30/1 odds. It will take a few days or even weeks before we truly get a better picture of how Swinton starts to do when moving up the predictions chart.
According to the press release from Sony Pictures Classics, “The film follows Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), who were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life.

Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

It’s a match made in heaven for a lot of Oscar watchers who are obsessed with actresses (that Venn diagram is a circle). Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star together in director Pedro Almodóvar‘s upcoming English-language feature film debut, “The Room Next Door.” Both women are Oscar winners — Almodóvar too — but it’s been a while since any of them have competed for the academy’s top honors. George Clooney is one of those actors who practically all of Hollywood would jump at the chance to work with. He's proven himself to be an impressive performer with his work in movies such as The Descendants, The Ides of March, Michael Clayton, and Up in the Air. He's also directed a fair number of films, most notably the stellar Good Night, and Good Luck, which he is bringing to the stage for his Broadway debut. This has led Clooney to interact with a wide range of actors and directors, and even reunite with them; Jon Watts' crime drama Wolfs will see him re-team with Brad Pitt. But there's one director that Clooney has sworn off working with, due to the fact that a confrontation between him and said director turned physical. That director? None other than David O. Russell, who directed Clooney in 1999's Three Kings.

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

In September 2021, Olivia Colman bagged her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite having failed on her Oscar bid for “The Father” five months earlier. This made her the 16th performer to triumph at the Emmys after going home empty-handed at the same year’s Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. The release of the 2024 Emmy nominations ballots confirmed that nine of the 16 actors who lost at the latest Oscars ceremony are capable of joining Colman on said list.

Double Oscar winner George Clooney has become one of the most successful people in his profession but despite family connections (his aunt was the late singer Rosemary Clooney), he struggled for years to make it as an actor.
After dropping out of college, Clooney would try his hand at acting. He struggled for a few years until finding a part on “E/R” in 1984. This wasn’t the “ER” that would make him a star 10 years later, but instead was a short-lived sitcom with the same name. In the decade between those shows, Clooney became known mostly for his track record of starring in an incredibly large number of pilots that weren’t picked up to be made into series. He would score a few successes with recurring roles on “The Facts of Life,” “Sisters” and “Roseanne,” but he would also suffer brutal humiliations like starring in “Return to Horror High...

The DC Extended Universe (Dceu) is undergoing some mammoth changes at the moment with James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new rulers of DC Studios. This means the DC cinematic universe is getting something of a reboot after a slew of films of varying quality. However, outside of the Dceu, when filmmakers get DC adaptations right, they make masterpieces. Christopher Nolan‘s “The Dark Knight” trilogy and Todd Phillips‘ “Joker” are proof of that.
Regardless of their overall quality all of these films have a crop of top-notch actors. Some were already Oscar winners or nominees when they starred in their respective DC films, some landed Oscar nominations or wins after their DC roles, and some are still in the hunt for their first Oscar bids (Cillian Murphy). Whatever the case, the list of DC movie alumni stretches far and wide — and some of them could be in the...

“The Killer” bowed at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Sunday, September 3. Directed by three-time Oscar nominee David Fincher in his first film since 2020’s “Mank,” it stars Michael Fassbender as a hitman. The storyline is described thusly: A man, solitary and cold, methodical and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, the killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target. And yet the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool. A brutal, bloody and stylish noir story of a professional assassin lost in a world without a moral compass.”
Fincher is said to have been attached to the “Killer” project since 2007, when it was set at Paramount. It followed Fincher over to Netflix under Fincher’s overall deal with the streamer.
Early reviews have been positive-to-mixed. As of this writing, “The Killer” rates 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews, with...

Following over a week of face-to-face, closed-door meetings, negotiations between leadership of the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers hit another snag as common ground was left unfound and the studios leaked their contracts proposal to the press to much ridicule and fanfare.
Speaking to riled up picketers in New York City Thursday, “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy emphasized that “we are not having it anymore” and that he’s tired of Hollywood studio execs who “do not know what the f–k they’re doing” with a “younger” and “faster” union.
“We have one problem: The AMPTP does not have their s—t together,” he said of execs like Disney’s Bob Iger, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley and AMPTP President Carol Lombardini. “They do not know what the f—k they’re doing.

Hollywood megastar George Clooney has come out in support of SAG-AFTRA and its 160,000-strong membership as the performers union takes to picket lines.
“This is an inflection point in our industry,” Clooney said in a short statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
“For our industry to survive that has to change. For actors, that journey starts now,” he added as the actors union goes on strike after failing to reach a new deal with studios and streamers.
SAG-AFTRA members join Writers Guild of America members, on strike since early May, in the first double strike in Hollywood since 1960, which looks to largely shut down the film and TV business.
Clooney in his statement added “actors and writers in large numbers have lost their ability to make a living.”

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

After it was released in 2007, Michael Clayton was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. It also got George Clooney one of the four Oscar nominations he’s earned for his acting. At the time, Clooney’s role in the film had him in a little-known profession in the legal industry: the “fixer.” Of course, since then, the job has gone from being in the shadows to being on the front page, especially in regards to Former President Donald Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen. But, when the film was released, Clooney explained to us what the job was, what it entailed, and how it made for such a compelling film. One thing most cinephiles can agree on is that Tilda Swinton is a mystifying gift to the film industry. In addition to delivering consistently excellent performances in almost every movie and cast she joins, the Oscar-winning actress has long been a champion of the sort of unique films that without her involvement might otherwise never get made.
From her repeat collaborations with auteurs like Wes Anderson and Bong Joon-ho to her risky roles in experimental projects like “The Souvenir” series, Swinton is an extremely familiar face for fans of arthouse cinema. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Tony Gilroy’s “Michael Clayton”: a crowd-pleasing George Clooney legal thriller from 2007. And yes, she scared the hell out of millennials as the White Witch in Disney’s “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Hell, she’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For any actor, playing a villain or just a plain bad person can be a true joy, because it lets them flex their imagination and acting muscles to play someone (hopefully) unlike themselves. That has also led many of those performances to winning Oscars. Even so, if you ask many actors (especially Christoph Waltz) about “playing a villain,” they’ll probably tell you that they couldn’t look at their character in that way, since they needed to create a believable motivation for their character to do all the awful things they do. And yet, so many actors have won Academy Awards for playing generally bad people, as you can see in the gallery above (or click here for direct access). Read on to see all of the Oscar-winning villains from the past 30 years.

One of the few certainties going into the 2023 awards season is that Cate Blanchett will receive her eighth Academy Award nomination for her celebrated performance in Todd Field’s “Tár,” about the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. Blanchett won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, and critics have been raving for weeks about her turn as Lydia Tár. Leah Greenblatt says in Entertainment Weekly, “The movie belongs to Blanchett, in a turn so exacting and enormous that it feels less like a performance than a full-body possession,” and Peter Bradshaw says in Guardian, “What a colossal performance from Cate Blanchett.” With the actress poised to become front and center in the upcoming awards season, let’s look back at Blanchett’s seven previous Oscar races.

Tony Gilroy enjoys the Hollywood spotlight on him as the showrunner of “Andor,” its first season presently airing on Disney+. And that’s how some moviegoers may know him best, as the man behind the “Star Wars” series and the script/reshoots of 2016’s “Rogue One,” which first introduced Cassian Andor’s character. But Gilroy is so much more than a man involved in “Star Wars.” While others may know him as the screenwriter behind the “Jason Bourne” films, what Gilroy should be best known for is his 2007 film “Michael Clayton.”

Tilda Swinton won an Oscar for “Michael Clayton,” but that doesn’t mean she keeps up on the season. “Did the Oscars even happen last year?,” she asked IndieWire while sitting in the lobby of a hotel this week in Toronto. Then the fabled Slap came back to her. “Oh, right!,” she said. “Even I caught that. Well, all I can say is, whatever.”
Swinton has her reasons for focusing on other issues. The British actress went to Cannes in May for the premiere of George Miller’s fantasy romance “Three Thousand of Years of Longing,” and this month traveled from Venice to Toronto for the launch of Joanna Hogg’s “The Eternal Daughter.” In between, Swinton spent the summer off the grid in Scotland, and thinking about what she can do to support the movies on her own terms.

Oscar-nominated producer Jennifer Fox will return for a fourth time to produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards. After pandemic cancellations and date changes over the past couple of years, the 13th edition will return to is usual November berth on Saturday, November 19, a key kickoff to Oscar season.
This year’s previously announced honorary awards will be presented to directors Euzhan Palcy and Peter Weir, songwriter Diane Warren, while Michael J. Fox will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The ceremony takes place for the first time at the newly reopened Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City. That was also the plan last year before Covid concerns forced the Governors Awards to scale down to a much more intimate event that took place at the Hollywood & Highland ballroom two nights before the Oscars in March of this year. Looks like things are back to normal — hopefully.

The genie is out of the bottle for the dynamic director George Miller and his newest venture “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. You’ll hear the awards comparisons that call it Miller’s version of “The Shape of Water” (2017), Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winner for best picture, but it’s closer to Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” (2012) but with an accessible and soulful core. It’s a love story to the storytellers, and a love letter to mankind. With its imperfect perfection, the first contender for Oscar’s most coveted prize has arrived.
Two of Miller’s films have received nominations: “Babe” (1995) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015). This is hands-down his most narrative-rich achievement, something that could bring him three Oscar noms as a producer, director and co-writer.

For an actor who came to fame tackling roles that call upon him to exude worldliness and charm, George Clooney sure is good at playing the clown for the Coen brothers. There's just something gratifying about watching the "Ocean's Eleven" and "Michael Clayton" star make an ass of himself in the duo's "Numbskull Trilogy" — whether he's fretting about his hair gel in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (he's a Dapper Dan man!) or being readily persuaded to team up with a group of blacklisted Communist screenwriters who've only just kidnapped him in "Hail, Caesar!"

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Network will move under HBO’s purview upon the completion of Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, which will result in the launch of Warner Bros. Discovery on Monday, Variety has learned exclusively.
Allison Page, president of Magnolia, which is a joint venture between the Gaineses and Discovery, Inc., will report directly to HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys. Bloys is one of the few top WarnerMedia execs still standing following this week’s mass exodus ahead of the Discovery-WarnerMedia merger’s close, which was capped off by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealing his new leadership team.
The fact that Bloys will be heading up the lifestyle brand from the “Fixer Upper” stars is notable, given that Magnolia Network is so deeply tied to Discovery. It has a linear channel under the Discovery lineup and its streaming app exists inside the Discovery Plus platform.

Just two years after landing his first credited film role, Kenneth Branagh made his feature directing debut by helming a 1989 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Henry V” in which he also starred. The next year, he became the fifth person to receive acting and directing Oscar nominations for a single film, after Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, and Warren Beatty. Since then, his multifaceted talent has allowed him to compete in three additional categories: Best Live Action Short, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.
Now, a full decade after his most recent outing, Branagh is poised to make Oscars history with “Belfast,” which chronicles the effects of The Troubles on a 1960s Northern Irish family. His work on the semi-autobiographical film is likely to earn him spots in this year’s Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay lineups.
