While his “Succession” character Roman Roy may not have ended up on top by the end of the HBO series, Kieran Culkin has proven a winner tonight after receiving the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 97th Academy Awards.
Culkin’s first nomination and win come for his performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” which features the two actors as cousins retracing their roots and rediscovering personal grievances while on a group trip to Poland. The actor takes home the prize over fellow nominee and former “Succession” co-star Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”), as well as Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Edward Norton (“A Complete Unknown”), and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”).
In his speech, on receiving the highest accolade of his industry Culkin said, “I’ve just been acting my whole life. It’s just been a part of what I do, so this is…I felt like this was never my trajectory.

Netflix likes Vanessa Kirby, and that is a very good thing. After being part of the cast for The Crown (Kirby played Princess Margaret) and 2020's Pieces of a Woman. Kirby is set to star in her third project for the streamer. At some point this year, Night Always Comes will be released only on Netflix. The cast alone seems to make it worth watching.
The movie is based on a book by Willy Vlautin about a woman in her 30s who is struggling financially. She attempts to buy her family home and only has a short time to close the deal. She has asked her mother for help, but her mother reneges which leaves the woman, Lynette (played by Kirby), to have to search for the funds.

The third season of Fox’s game show The Floor kicked off immediately following Super Bowl Lix between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hosted by Rob Lowe, The Floor invites 100 contestants to compete against each other in a series of head-to-head duels, with a randomizer selecting players who then challenge someone standing next to them. Each person arrives at The Floor with a category in which they consider themselves to be an expert — things like Pantry Items, Tony Winners, and Marvel. The ultimate winner after 12 episodes will claim the $250,000 grand prize.
Lowe had fun with the crowd by pretending to be heartbroken over the fact that he’d “never” attended the Met Gala and “never” been named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive. But don’t feel too bad for him. After all, Lowe is an Emmy nominee for The West Wing (2001) and a six-time Golden Globe nominee...

Janet Planet. The image is tough to see until our eyes adjust: a girl, not yet a teenager, perched on the edge of a bed, alone, ensconced in darkness, her head bisected by the edge of the frame. She’s looking. Is it at something, or for something? She gets up, walks outside, the deafening susurrus of cicadas all around her. She makes a call on a payphone, announces herself as Lacy. “I’m gonna kill myself,” she deadpans into the receiver. A pause. “I said I’m gonna kill myself if you don’t come get me.” She hangs up.This is the first sequence of Janet Planet (2024), the first film by Annie Baker—and it immediately exhibits the qualities of her formidable work as a playwright: the curious quiet, the felt time, the mordant sense of humor. Like Kenneth Lonergan before her, Baker is a celebrated stage dramatist...

Rose of Versailles is widely revered as a shojo manga classic that broke new ground by exploring the subject of societal gender discrimination. This issue also affected franchise creator Riyoko Ikeda as a young female manga artist working in Japan in the early 1970s.
In a recent interview conducted by Oricon, Ikeda was asked about the "societal landscape" that existed back when Rose of Versailles was first being serialized in Shueisha's bi-weekly shojo magazine, Margaret. According to Ikeda, the publication staff greatly favored men over women due to "traditional" views about the roles of men and women in Japanese society. "When I was working on The Rose of Versailles, women couldn't advance in their careers, and I was paid half the salary of my male peers. I once protested, asking, 'Why am I paid half when we're in the same magazine and have similar popularity?' The response shocked me.

Before making their feature directorial debut with Sundance entry Sorry, Baby — in which they also star and wrote the script — the longest film Eva Victor had ever directed came in with a running time of approximately 60 seconds.
Victor, who uses they/she pronouns, found success in the late 2010s via viral videos on Twitter, often lampooning trending news stories like the creation of a Straight Pride parade in Boston. They regularly racked up millions of views while simultaneously writing stories on the female-focused satire website The Reductress with headlines like, “‘I Want Children Someday,’ Says Man Who Will at Best Stand There Saying, ‘Push Babe.'” At the time, the Bay Area native was living in Brooklyn and looking to break into comedy, ideally with a staffed writing job “at a late night show to one of those guys,” as Victor puts it.

In 2011, Kieran Culkin and Mark Ruffalo starred in the psychological drama Margaret, and while that film went off without a hitch, their time on stage together was a bit of a different story. The two appeared in the Off-Broadway production of James Lapine's The Moment When back in 1999 when Culkin was just a mischievous 17-year-old, who – as a prank – swapped out Ruffalo's fake marijuana joint for a real one. Now, 26 years later, the Succession star says he'll never try that again.
Speaking with The Guardian, Culkin reflected on the moment, saying that at the time he thought it was a "good prank." Surprisingly enough, Ruffalo took it all in stride, as did a few others who got in on the action to puff-puff-pass the joint around, including veteran stage star Phyllis Newman, who sadly passed away in 2019.
"I was 17 and stupid. I'm like, 'I thought this was a good prank.

Jesse Eisenberg hadn’t seen “Succession” before casting Kieran Culkin to play his cousin in his Holocaust-memorial road movie “A Real Pain.” So the writer/director told IndieWire back in January 2024 when “A Real Pain” world-premiered at Sundance. As Eisenberg revealed to IndieWire during an October interview promoting the film ahead of its November release, he still hasn’t watched the HBO show that won Kieran Culkin a Best Actor Emmy for portraying zeitgeist-addled nepo baby Roman Roy. “‘Succession’ is a cultural phenomenon that I’ll definitely watch in my life, especially if I get some kind of flu where I am in bed, whatever,” Eisenberg told IndieWire.
“When you have a fever, that’s a good time to watch the show,” Culkin replied.
But the one Culkin project, film or TV, Eisenberg has seen is Kenneth Lonergan’s 2011 cult classic “Margaret,” released with a theatrical cut after five years...

Sam Raimis new horror-thriller movie may soon have a new cast member as, per Deadline, Rachel McAdams is in talks to star in the film. Raimi is directing and producing Send Help, a new film from 20th Century Studios. The casting news is not definite, as reports say the negotiations are still in the initial stage.
Send Help marks Raimis first foray into the horror genre in 15 years since the release of 2009s Drag Me to Hell. The movie is said to be a horror-thriller set on an island with a story in the middle of Rob Reiners Misery adaptation and Robert Zemeckis Castaway. Send Help is based on a script by Damien Shannon and Mark Swift, who wrote Baywatch. Zainab Azizi will produce, representing Raimi Productions.

Rachel McAdams is in talks to star in Sam Raimi’s Send Help, the horror-thriller from 20th Century Studios, which he is producing and directing.
Sources tell us that these negotiations are in early stages, and nothing is definite at this point. The news follows Deadline’s exclusive earlier in July, which broke the news that Raimi had boarded the project not officially greenlit by the studio.
Billed as a two-hander horror-thriller set on an island, the story is somewhere between Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis’ classic Castaway. Send Help is based on an original script by Baywatch scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Zainab Azizi will also produce under the Raimi Productions banner, and the film is expected to nab a theatrical release.

Debuting feature film directors Karrie Crouse and Will Joines describe their cinematic inspirations for Hold Your Breath as a bit of Kubrick’s The Shining and The Others with the visual panache of Malick’s Days of Heaven. After seeing the Searchlight film, which had its world premiere as one of the Toronto Film Festival’s Special Presentations last month and will begin streaming Friday on Hulu, I thought more of another movie, now 40 years old. Places in the Heart won Sally Field a second Oscar (“You really like me!”) as a widow in Depression-era North Texas trying to survive the elements threatening her farm and her two young children.
I also thought a bit about the great Todd Haynes 1995 drama Safe, with Julianne Moore hiding behind a gas mask to avoid the dangers in our environment. This film falls short of those but is memorable enough to make an impression all its own.

Apple TV+'s new crime comedy, Wolfs, relies significantly on the star power of its cast. Directed by Spider-Man: No Way Home's Jon Watts, the 2024 movie sees two professional fixers tasked with the same gig, forcing them to put aside their egos and preferences to operate together. The film takes elements of fixer classics like Michael Clayton and dry buddy-cop comedies like The Nice Guys, building toward a fun new thriller. It also serves as an Ocean's franchise replacement for the two main stars, George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
The Wolfs cast isn't very large, with most of the screen time occupied by the two leads. The best fixer movies typically spend most of their time following the lead as they navigate a city and their crime situation. However, there's always a need for supporting characters, and Wolfs has several recognizable actors who appear for just a brief portion of the film.

Kathy Bates was ready to retire before starring on the new CBS series Matlock.
In an interview with the New York Times, published Sunday, the Oscar winner shared that after a movie shoot had “soured” — she wouldn’t name the film — she was crying at home on her sofa before telling her agents the next day that she wanted to retire.
“It becomes my life,” the 76-year-old said of acting and work. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.”
A few weeks later, her agents sent her a script for the rebooted series Matlock. The original ran from 1986 to 1995 and starred Andy Griffith as Benjamin Matlock. The now rebooted series will chronicle Bates’ character, attorney Madeline “Matty” Matlock, rejoining the law workforce as a senior and racking up courtroom wins. As the two played a game, fans took to the comments section to air their thoughts on the current state of Rhonj.

Sometimes, they’re positive, but the recurring theme with Rhonj is that the fans are pretty negative about the cast and how they’ve affected the show.

Margaret Moth lived her life on the edge, driven by a fierce commitment to bearing witness. As a video journalist, she fearlessly plunged into the world’s most volatile warzones for over two decades, determined to capture the hardest-hitting footage.
But what compelled such a risk-taking existence? Lucy Lawless’ arresting documentary Never Look Away sets out to shine light on the woman behind the camera, delving into Moth’s turbulent origins and unwavering determination to show reality, however raw.
Best known for her lead role in Xena: Warrior Princess, Lawless makes her directorial debut with this in-depth profile. Rather than take a traditional path, she constructs Moth’s narrative by layering poignant interviews and rarely-seen archive material. Through this nuanced approach, a vivid portrait emerges of a complex and captivating figure.
Both trailblazer and tormented soul, Moth pushed limits physically and emotionally, yet kept fighting even when confronted with her gravest challenge.

The First Omen brings a fresh female perspective to body horror, departing from the series' typical male-centric focus. The film highlights a double standard in horror, facing censorship challenges due to its graphic content centered on women. The success of The First Omen lies in its exploration of provocative themes about motherhood and the female experience.
As The First Omen begins to find a new lease of life after its initial theatrical run, the movie's growing reputation is helping to highlight a wider double standard within the horror genre. As a prequel to one of the most celebrated horror movies of all time, The First Omen was already under pressure to live up to the first movie's legacy. However, while the movie largely stayed true to the tone and narrative of the 1976 horror classic, it also pushed the franchise in bold new directions, thanks largely to its fresh new perspective.
