One Battle After Another will officially slug it out with the fall’s top awards contenders. On Thursday, Warner Bros. confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, initially dated somewhat perplexingly for Aug. 8, will arrive in theaters on Sept. 26 — a release date that all but assures Anderson’s latest of launching at one of the significant fall festivals in Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.
Still, regardless of its calendar placement, One Battle After Another was always considered one of the year’s top potential Oscar films, sight unseen. Anderson’s movies have racked up several nominations over the last two decades, as have DiCaprio’s many acclaimed features. It’s always possible that One Battle After Another is the exception, not the rule — especially because Anderson’s last dalliance with the work of Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (more on that below), didn’t connect with the Academy significantly.

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a first look at Paul Thomas Anderson's mysterious crime thriller One Battle After Another, which might well turn out to be one of this year's most surprising movies. The 21-second preview (video below) offers a glimpse of what's to come ahead of the official trailer that is set to release next week, and it seems that the modern take on Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland is going to involve plenty of gunfire, as bullets fly around an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Sean Penn.
The gun-toting teaser opens with DiCaprio's character "Bob" enjoying a seemingly peaceful moment, which is abruptly interrupted by the sound of gunshots. The barrage of bullets is coming from a pregnant woman who is wielding a machine gun. The sound of the ammunition being fired from the weapon continues, triggering a montage of clips – one showing DiCaprio running,...

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those filmmakers from whom you largely expect greatness – but beyond that, you never quite know what you’re getting. A sprawling tapestry of tales like Magnolia? The thunderous (and darkly comic) brooding intensity of There Will Be Blood? The intoxicating bad romance of Phantom Thread? Last time, he brought big hangout vibes to Licorice Pizza. His latest, One Battle After Another, seems to be another total pivot, going by its first teaser. This one seems to be a return to dark and dangerous territory, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. Watch the teaser:
It’s just a very initial taste for now, ahead of a full trailer coming next week – but it’s mighty exciting to have Paul Thomas Anderson back in business. Between all that gunfire, talk of “what’re you gonna do about this baby?”, and a dose of screaming, our Spidey...

Gangster films have become an identifiable piece of American and international pop culture. The study of the human condition through criminality continues to fascinate audiences worldwide as the need to understand why people turn to lives of crime somehow helps people better understand themselves. With tons of big-name hits in the genre, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface, it's easy to see why fans love the genre.
However, there are plenty of incredible films in the genre that, for one reason or another, aren't quite talked about as much as the iconic staples of gangster cinema. Films like Lawless and The Drop are underrated gems that deserve their day in the sun. Needless to say, more prominent names in the genre constantly overshadow multiple brilliant gangster flicks.
Updated on March 17, 2025, by Robert Vaux: The gangster genre is durable, and there is no shortage of brilliant gangster movies that never quite received their due.

There are plenty of contenders for the greatest film of the 2000s decade. The first decade of the new century was absolutely stacked to the brim with instant classics in every conceivable genre, and fans have been relentless in their debate over the best of the best. Comedy fans come to the table with all-time greats like Superbad, Juno, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Action fans pull The Dark Knight, Kill Bill, and Children of Men out of their holsters. It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

Five months from its planned theatrical release, mysteries still swirl around Paul Thomas Anderson‘s upcoming blockbuster at Warner Bros. But cross at least this mystery off the list, as a new WGA filing for the project confirms it’s “inspired by” Thomas Pynchon‘s 1990 novel “Vineland.” That makes the film the second time Anderson brings Pynchon’s work to the big screen, the first time being 2014’s “Inherent Vice.”

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film starring Leonardo DiCaprio — which, in quintessential PTA fashion, still doesn’t have an official title — packs a budget that’s not just several time higher than anything the 11-time Oscar-nominated director has ever worked with, but far bigger than his films have ever earned at the box office.
Some reports pegged it at $180 million, but an individual with knowledge tells IndieWire it’s actually $130 million. That almost as much as what Anderson’s most successful film to date, “There Will Be Blood,” made globally in 2007 ($76 million), if you factor in inflation ($143 million).
It’s also way more than the budget of his previous film, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” which seemed like a big gamble, even with $40 million. Turns out, it was: that film only grossed $33 million globally. But though Anderson has moved from MGM to Warner Bros., the same film chiefs gave Anderson both of...

Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

Daniel Day-Lewis is a veritable screen legend, rightly regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time. Though famously picky with his roles, only appearing in one movie every few movies, and now mostly retired, Day-Lewis's filmography is still formidable. It very much leans toward drama, including classics like My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, and There Will Be Blood.

American Fiction director Cord Jefferson is set to follow up his 2023 Oscar-winner with a neo-Western: more here.
American Fiction – pictured – was one of 2023’s most critically adored films and ended up featuring in lots of awards conversations. Director Cord Jefferson has publicly mooted a couple of different genres for his next project, floating the possibility of an erotic thriller around a year ago but ultimately, it looks like he and his crew will be heading out west to shoot his next film.
Whether that actually means America’s geographical west, we don’t know but Jefferson’s next film certainly looks like it will be set in that part of the country, with Deadline (via World Of Reel) reporting that his next project is a ‘contemporary Western set in Arizona about two brothers searching for a third sibling.’

Earning his second Best Actor Oscar 22 years after his first, Adrien Brody entered the history books as the first leading actor to win two statuettes on his first two attempts on Sunday.
He won for his role as an ingenious, haunted architect in Brady Corbet’s epic, following his win in 2003 for Roman Polanski’s biographical World War II drama “The Pianist.”
And by wining Best Actor on Sunday, Brody not only made history but also preserved his place among Oscar milestones. Had 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet won in the category for “A Complete Unknown,” he would have become the youngest Best Actor victor ever, beating Brody’s own record from 2003.
Brody is the 11th leading actor to win twice in the top category.

Christian Bale's Most Underrated Performances Happened 10 Years Apart in Movies by the Same Director
With the awards season well underway and the Academy Awards quickly approaching, it is time to revisit and reconsider the greatest movie acting performances of the 21st century. Whether it's a supporting role, or a lead role, a man or a woman, a blockbuster or an understated indie film, each and every award-nominated performance has something to appreciate. From Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood to Charlize Theron in Monster, to Christopher Plummer in Beginners, to Da'Vine Joy Randolph in The Holdovers, there have been so many mind-blowing performances since the turn of the century, but only one of them can be the best. One particularly strong contender comes from the Best Supporting Actor category of the 83rd Academy Awards.
Christian Bale's first and only Oscar victory is also one of the best. In 2010, he took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the Mark Wahlberg-led film The Fighter.

Few movie stars compare to Humphrey Bogart. The tough-as-nails actor embodied the very idea of American film noir in the 1940s and 1950s, having made 16 noir films in his lifetime and proved himself to be just as adept at playing snarling villains as he was at playing a heroic, star-crossed lover. You may know him best as Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon" or Rick in "Casablanca," but if you know Bogart's full history, you know that he transitioned away from playing nastier characters to more classically "good guys" over time. If you're not quite ready to dive into his full career, it's not hard to blame you; although he died relatively young, at age 57, he appeared in 75 films across a few decades. So, you might ask yourself, where to start?
Certainly an easy way to start is by checking Bogart's page on Rotten Tomatoes. As ever, it's worth...

Several years before Everything Everywhere All at Once cleaned up at the Oscars, winning best picture and director, among numerous others, directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (also known simply as the Daniels) made their feature length debut in 2016 with Swiss Army Man, and it's one of the best films you've likely never seen. 2024 was a great year for cinema that saw the release of many films that are guaranteed to become future classics, but none have been instantly heralded as an all-time masterpiece in the same way as “The Brutalist.” Brady Corbet’s epic character study of a Hungarian-Jewish architect who immigrated to America is both a shocking examination of the cruelty of capitalism and an astounding examination of what the artistic process looks like. While “The Brutalist” will certainly be analyzed for years based on the density of its social and political commentary, it’s also a film that deserves to be celebrated for what an outstanding achievement it is for independent cinema.
Among the joys of “The Brutalist” is that it feels like an homage to a more classical form of storytelling that has become increasingly rare in modern Hollywood. In an era in which the industry has become even more...

Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s mysterious Leonardo DiCaprio-led 2025 movie could be the most surprising action movie, well, ever. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker will join forces with the Academy Award-winning star for this year’s One Battle After Another, which has reportedly now had a test screening. And the results are...unexpected.
Known for the likes of Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and There Will Be Blood, One Battle After Another has now been described as the “closest we’ll ever get” to a Paul Thomas Anderson making a “full-on action movie.” The footage that was shown included “tentpole-level spectacle,” including “loads of action and car chases,” and a “phenomenal” car chase climax. According to The Film Stage and their sources, One Battle After Another could be the director’s most mainstream movie yet. “It could definitely appeal to a lot of people, starting with Leo and the scale that is present,...

Audiences are probably pretty accustomed to hearing something like "they just don't make 'em like they used to anymore" in regard to movies. It is definitely a different era of cinema where the big-budget blockbusters get all the attention while the independent and grounded genre films fall under the radar of larger audiences. What's interesting is that the blockbuster trend started some time ago in the late '70s and early '80s when directors like Lucas, Scott and Cameron changed the face of genre filmmaking. One of the genres most affected was science fiction, and it seems like most contemporary big blockbusters exist in this genre. However, popcorn movies are losing more and more substance as the years go by. The remakes and reboots are oversaturating the market, along with the newer interconnected universes.
Back when studios took chances on all kinds of movies, hidden gems and unexpected hits would delightfully find an audience.

The 1992 movie The Last of the Mohicans, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is still regarded by many as the best Western war movie of all time, more than three decades after its original release. Meanwhile, Irish-British actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most celebrated actors in history. Day-Lewis is the only actor to win three Best Actor Academy Awards, for his roles in My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012). He has also received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for movies, including In The Name of the Father (1993) and Phantom Thread (2017).
In the early stages of his career, Day-Lewis starred in the Western war movie The Last of the Mohicans, also one of Michael Mann's best movies, for which he served as director. Based on the 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper, the movie received a highly positive reception from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $143 million at the worldwide box office.

Dune: Part II has shown up on many critics' lists of the best films of 2024, including MovieWeb's list. It's an epic film from a great director who has been expanding our notions of what science-fiction films can be since Arrival and then Blade Runner 2049, and Denis Villeneuve had made tense masterpieces even before then. While he's too humble to include his own film, Villeneuve has revealed his own picks for the best movies of 2024.
Villeneuve's picks are fairly standard awards fare — they're neither too international or arthouse nor big blockbusters. He has chosen an historical epic that will likely sweep the Oscars (The Brutalist), a beautifully poetic indie about the lives of two Black men (Nickel Boys), a star-studded drama about religion and power (Conclave), a boundary-pushing adaptation with a subversive lead performance (Queer), and a controversial French film about a transgender crime lord (Emilia Pérez). Joe Alwyn has had an astonishing rise. After his breakthrough with Ang Lee, he wowed in Conversations with Friends and now stars in The Brutalist. Throw in his ex, Taylor Swift, and you have a redhot A-lister ready to go
If – as projected – The Brutalist goes to the 2025 Academy Awards and cleans up, there will be some knowing, told-you-so nods from critics and industry experts. A monumental epic, the film has already earned comparisons to Citizen Kane and the Daniel Day-Lewis masterpiece There Will Be Blood. Over an engrossing three and a half hours, with an intermission, The Brutalist wrestles with the American dream, the vagaries of capitalism, the immigrant experience and antisemitism. Everyone agrees its lead, Adrien Brody, who already has a little gold statue, has never been better. We are still reeling from the shocking narrative disruption of the third act of No Country for Old Men. The hauntingly ambiguous ending to the film by Joel and Ethan Coen left us in a complete daze. 2007, considered one of the canonically great years in movie history, featured a plethora of elliptical endings in bleak and unsettling films such as There Will Be Blood, Zodiac, and Michael Clayton.

It's not often that we get a monumental landmark in cinema in any given year, but 2007 gave us two such landmarks, in No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. The twin masterpieces by the Coen Brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson, respectively, were both highly touted as the pinnacles of two careers of similar legacy yet vastly different methodology. Both were given major accolades by mainstream awards bodies, including a head-to-head Best Picture contest that No Country for Old Men ultimately won. But the connections between the two go even deeper than that, as the productions crossed paths with each other in a most unfortunate way that served as a funny speed bump on the road to glory.

If pressed to reveal their favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movie, or, rather, which one they consider their truest masterpiece, our readers would certainly have no shortage of amazing movies to pick from. After all, Anderson is, by far, one of the most artistically interesting names in our current cinematic landscape, directing sometimes divisive, but always impactful movies that range from Boogie Nights to Phantom Thread. And that's not to mention his beautiful music videos. With choices as different as Boogie NIghts, There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza, it can be pretty hard to make a definitive choice. Still, many wouldn't blink an eye before going with one of Anderson's earlier films, a curious tale about loneliness, forgiveness, and death titled Magnolia.

Joe Alwyn first read the script for Brady Corbet’s 3.5-hour epic The Brutalist five years ago.
The pair met for coffee in New York. “I was such a fan of Brady and such a fan of the script,” the British actor tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was this big, rigorous, detailed, old-fashioned epic.”
He was immediately game, though it would take another few years before the post-war piece landed on our screens. “Good for [Brady] for fighting tooth and nail to get it made,” Alwyn says.
The Brutalist has set the pace this award season, earning seven Golden Globe nominations and plenty of Oscar buzz. Corbet and his cast have built a masterpiece of cinema; with a built-in intermission and a sub-$10 million budget, critics have lauded Corbet for his achievement, and Alwyn is among one of his biggest fans.

As we wind down the year with holiday cheer and comfort viewing, IndieWire’s craft team picks the best TV cinematography of 2024. We weren’t seeking the slickest-looking eye candy, nor even the most elegantly shot series (although many of these projects are striking), but instead sought titles in which the cinematography was integral to the vision of its creator and elevated the storytelling of some of the year’s best shows.
While the long and repeated grind of television production can make the art of cinematography more of a team sport working under the umbrella of a series’ visual bible, in the age of limited series, there were a number cinematographers on this list who shot a vast majority, if not the entire series, and this list features a number of director/cinematographer combinations whose collaboration is more commonly associated with feature film production. When watching classic films like Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, or even a modern gem like There Will Be Blood or Oppenheimer, grand epics that focus on the accomplishments of great men with gargantuan ambitions, it’s easy to think, “They rarely make movies like this nowadays.” That’s also the feeling one gets when watching Brady Corbet’s third film as director, The Brutalist, a 215-minute movie, complete with an opening musical overture and an intermission, shot on VistaVision, a film format that has rarely been used since the 1950s. Yet Corbet’s film, which he co-wrote with filmmaker, actress, and his wife, Mona Fastvold, manages to be both a throwback to this type of expansive yet personal storytelling, while also being incredibly modern in its form and experimentation. It’s a movie that warrants this level of scope and grandiosity, an ambitious, towering achievement of a film, even...

In January 2019, John Krasinski recalled how Paul Thomas Anderson taught him an important lesson regarding supporting other filmmakers. Per his own recounting, Krasinski once off-handedly told Anderson about a "subpar" artsy movie he'd just watched. The There Will Be Blood director then gently told this veteran of The Office, “Don’t say that. Don’t say that it’s not a good movie. If it wasn’t for you, that’s fine, but in our business, we’ve all got to support each other...you’ve got to support the big swing. If you put it out there that the movie’s not good, they won’t let us make more movies like that.” If only Anderson had been around in John Wayne’s time to offer such sage wisdom to this Western movie legend. In his time in Hollywood, Wayne was infamous for engaging in mean-spirited rhetoric about other movies.

We must be careful how we throw around the word "masterpiece," and yet it seems entirely appropriately for Brady Corbet's towering achievement "The Brutalist." Years in the making, Corbert's sprawling, nearly four-hour epic is cut from the same cloth (or perhaps I should say chiseled from the same stone) as great masterpieces like "Citizen Kane," "The Godfather," and more recently, "There Will Be Blood." And like those three movies, "The Brutalist" is a distinctly American masterpiece; a story that reflects the triumphs and horrors of the ethereal thing we call "The American Experience." These are stories of great men bursting with wild, potentially dangerous ambition and how they found a way to encase that ambition in the still-developing America of the past, an ever-changing, ever-growing thing impossible to pin down.

Brian Cox reflects on Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting and how it affected their 1997 movie. Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting is well-known, with the actor fully immersing himself in the roles he plays. This approach has resulted in numerous performances that garnered critical acclaim, leading to six Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, and three wins. He first won Best Actor for his performance as Christy Brown in the 1989 movie My Left Foot, in which he plays a man born with cerebral palsy who is only able to move his left foot.
Day-Lewis' other Academy Award wins are for playing oilman Daniel Planview in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 movie There Will Be Blood and as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's 2012 biopic Lincoln. His last movie, Phantom Thread, in which he reunited with Anderson and received an Academy Award nomination, marked the final role before his retirement. However, Day-Lewis is coming out...

There are stories of coincidence and chance, of intersections and strange things told…And Patton Oswalt has an amusing story of his own about working with Paul Thomas Anderson on Magnolia. Only, Oswalt had no idea what he was even filming – he was just sort of up a tree.

While directors often get the brunt of credit, first assistant directors are arguably just as crucial in turning a vision into a reality. Many filmmakers and producers begin as assistant directors, while others are especially suited for that role, which combines the creativity of directing with the management of production. Adam Somner, who passed away this week on Nov. 27, 2024, was known as one of the best. He worked with Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, among others, and had an incredible filmography as a director and producer. He died of anaplastic thyroid cancer at the age of 59.
Spielberg referred to Somner as his "left arm," while Paul Thomas Anderson said in a tribute, "I would rank him in the Kobe Bryant, Mick Jagger, Winston Churchill category of Legends. And that would be under-selling it.” It's a testament to Somner's extensive career,...
