Former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall may have had a controversial time at the helm of the beloved sci-fi series, but let that take nothing away from his undeniable talent as a writer. From episodes of the beloved crime series Life on Mars to crafting the iconic British detective series Broadchurch, Chibnall's CV reads superbly well, which is why any new project of his instantly conjures plenty of interest. On March 27, 2025, Chibnall's new crime novel, Death at the White Hart, will be finally made available for public purchase, although those who would rather consume this story through the visual medium need not panic.

British detective series have a long and lasting legacy on televisions across the world, with the likes of Life on Mars, Broadchurch, and Line of Duty dazzling audiences in the past twenty years alone. Another such success from across the pond is The Bay, a gritty crime drama created by Daragh Carville and Richard Clarke for ITV. After four successful seasons from 2019 to 2023, the announcement of a fifth felt like an inevitability, although many had hoped the wait might not have been for this long.

Exclusive: In another reminder of the challenging climate for UK scripted producers, Watford & Essex has filed for closure after its joint-venture deal with Legendary Entertainment was not renewed.
The drama company was founded alongside Legendary in 2020 by Emma Frost and Matthew Graham, showrunners of Starz series The Spanish Princess, but did not have a greenlit series announced during its five years of trading.
Legendary ended its joint-venture agreement with Watford & Essex last year and the producer has in recent days appointed financial services firm Cork Gully to oversee a liquidation process.
Legendary, the U.S. studio behind series including Dune: Prophecy, declined to comment. Reps for Frost and Graham have been contacted for comment.
When Watford & Essex announced its arrival in 2020, the producer said it was in development on 10 projects, including a remake of ABC’s 1960s TV series Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.

We can be heroes, just for one day — and Ricky Gervais will remember it for the rest of his life.
An inextricable part of the Extras and The Office creator’s legacy in the entertainment business is his brief foray into pop music, starting his career as one half of the short-lived new wave group Seona Dancing in the early 1980s. Like his most famous character David Brent, Gervais thought of himself as a musician first, everything else second. But the world of Brit Pop apparently told him that he has a face for comedy, not Glastonbury. Still, even when he became the U.K.’s most internationally celebrated TV comedy creator, Gervais continued to take inspiration from his earliest musical influences, including from his personal hero, David Bowie.

The glam rock icon David Bowie may have had countless hit songs beloved by rock fans worldwide, but the truth was he had a complex relationship with his first hit single. Space Oddity was the track that put Bowie on the map, as its themes of alienation, loneliness, and space travel helped lay the foundations for his alien-like reputation as The Man Who Fell to Earth. While Bowie would continue to explore themes of time and space as the years progressed, notable as Ziggy Stardust in songs like Starman, his feelings toward the story of Major Tom were more complicated.
Bowie was an artist in the truest sense of the word, as he used his music to break down social and political boundaries, normalize LGBTQ+ representation, and become a style icon who left an undeniable mark on the entire fashion industry. Bowie was just 19 years old when he hit it big with Space Oddity,...

The following contains minor spoilers for Rebus, now streaming on Viaplay.
The third adaptation of Rebus might not be its absolute best -- but it's not far off. Sir Ian Rankin's beloved Inspector Rebus novels are on TV screens again, this time with Richard Rankin in the title role. It's just good sense to ask why, because audiences have already done this before with mixed results, twice if one counts that the role of Rebus has been played by two previous actors. But the Rebus of 2024 is a far cry from the Rebus inhabited by John Hannah and Ken Stott, and that makes all the difference.
Fans of British television will gravitate toward Rebus, which was produced for Nordic streaming service Viaplay and originally screened on BBC One in the summer, because the six-episode drama has the sensibilities of the great British crime dramas. And given that John Rebus...

Some of the best K-dramas push the boundaries of the genre and include many action-packed and gory sequences that even the most die-hard action fan would love. Violence is a tricky tool to master in movies and television, as it can be too brutal for some viewers, while others can't get enough. The key is to balance fast-paced, adrenaline-inducing scenes with compelling character dynamics that make the audience invested in the outcome of fight scenes and battles.
Action is a difficult genre to master and is often secondary to a series' main thrust, which is closer to the thriller, crime, horror, and drama genres. However, due to this, action is used as an essential element that elevates the other conflicts of a series and creates visually engaging sequences that leave the audience breathless. It's a day like any other for Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler (John Simm), the Manchester policeman at the center of BBC One's Life on Mars (available through a BritBox subscription). Everything is normal until strange circumstances send Sam hurtling into the past. The logline concept sounds great on paper, but it's even better in execution. With far more than just a shoddy framework built around a gimmick, Life on Mars is a hefty series that's never bogged down by awkward exposition. As Sam tries to figure out what happened to him, his journey takes him through intriguing cases, pits him against his peers, and, yes, ultimately answers its most pertinent questions.
Life on Mars aired for two seasons from 2006 to 2007 before spawning an equally brilliant sequel series, Ashes to Ashes (2008-2010). Whereas many other shows premised on similar sci-fi twists tend to lose the thread (and audience interest...

Earlier seasons of Blackadder were already popular. The scriptwriting was filled with pathos as well as humor. The last episode almost was a disaster, but saved by post-production.
British comedies have come to be known for their high standard of humor, while also filtering in pathos that can turn any comedic moment into a poignant one. Blackadder is perhaps one of the most striking examples that took audiences by surprise with a breathtaking ending. Rowan Atkinson's portrayal of the titular character isn't far short of being a defining moment in his career, albeit, Edmund Blackadder had a swift personality change after season 1 wasn't quite the success the creators had hoped for. Prior to becoming the dry, sarcastic lead that fans came to love, Blackadder was a bumbling fool who didn't get viewers on side. Baldrick had his wits about him, and it was down to him to provide guidance as a servant.

Sophomore albums are notoriously hard to record -- and the same is true for TV shows. Second seasons often fall short of first-season hype, or push themselves so hard to be bigger and better that they go off the deep end. Line of Duty Series 2 has an incredibly high bar to clear and is able to leap over it, while also taking some significant creative risks that separate it from its predecessor.
Series 2 is one of the most important seasons in Line of Duty history, because of the arrival of Keeley Hawes as Lindsay Denton. Denton becomes a key -- and polarizing -- figure within the show's universe. But with the world established and Steve Arnott now integrated into AC-12, creator and writer Jed Mercurio is free to expand his canvas in ways both necessary and surprising.

Life on Mars is a unique blend of genres with a realistic and immersive approach. Audiences follow Sam's confusion while the show explores great crimes and adds a supernatural touch. Ashes to Ashes successfully tied up loose ends, linking the narratives of the two shows seamlessly.
Rehashing the same plots in one particular genre can become tiresome and predictable. So when the drama series Life on Mars came along, viewers were treated to a refreshingly seamless blend of time travel, police procedural and mystery. The show first aired in 2006 and ran for two seasons before being given the sequel, Ashes to Ashes. In 2008, an American adaptation of the same name was brought to fruition, although it was canceled before a second season was commissioned. Life on Mars transports viewers back to 1973, which, although at the time of release was only 33 years in the past, was a completely different era for policing.

The following contains major spoilers for Grace Series 4, Episode 1, "Dead Man's Time," now streaming on BritBox.
The crime drama has become a British television staple because of series like Grace, which returns for its fourth series on BritBox for U.S. audiences. The show follows a proven path to success: take the works of a successful British mystery author -- in this case, Peter James -- find a compelling lead actor, and build a series around those two things. But in the hands of veterans like writer Ed Whitmore and star John Simm, it never feels formulaic. Rather, it feels like an example of why British crime dramas are so good.

America has had its fair share of television shows that originated in the United Kingdom. Remakes are a common thread on American TV, whether it’s Strictly Come Dancing becoming Dancing With the Stars, or narrative shows being ported over to a different audience, including Being Human, Life on Mars, and more. Each has had varying degrees of success, based on how well the concept translates to American humor, but none has perhaps been more successful lately than Ghosts, a supernatural comedy that arrived on our shores in 2021, after the original version premiered in Britain in 2019.

The 21st century is when everything changes.
British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.
And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.
Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

Global production giant Fremantle is still hungry. On Tuesday the Bertelsmann-controlled group signed a deal for another major acquisition, entering into a conditional purchase agreement to take control of Asacha Media Group, a private-equity-backed company that owns several high-profile production companies in the U.K., France, and Italy.
The acquisition of Asacha Media Group follows Fremantle’s recent deal to take an 80 percent stake in Singapore-based TV group Beach House Pictures. The investment in the two companies will cost Fremantle parent company Rtl Group $217 million (€200 million), Rtl Group said Tuesday.
Asacha’s production portfolio includes France’s Srab Films, producer of Venice winner Happening and official French Oscar contenders Les Misérables and Saint Omar; Picomedia, producer of hit Italian drama series The Sea Beyond; and British group Red Planet Pictures, known for such series as Death in Paradise and Life on Mars. Dakota Johnson has talked about the experience of filming superhero spin-off Madame Web – in particular acting against a blue screen for its effects sequences.
In a relatively quiet year for superhero movies, Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, Madame Web, is the first of 2024’s offerings to emerge – it’s out in February in the UK.
Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Web, the titular heroine whose psychic powers give her the ability to see into the future. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson describes the film as more “human and grounded” than most superhero fare, though that doesn’t mean it isn’t without its action set-pieces.
In fact, Johnson hints that she was quite perturbed by the CGI-heavy sections of the film in which she was asked to perform in front of a blue screen as people off-camera yelled stage directions.

However, Star Trek 4 faced multiple setbacks and has now been deemed the final film in the franchise.

Matthew Perry's character on The West Wing, Joe Quincy, was underused despite making a lasting impact and receiving Emmy nominations. Quincy's storyline involved uncovering a scandal and negotiating the retirement of a close friend, showcasing Perry's dramatic acting skills. Perry's commitments to Friends prevented him from taking on a larger role on The West Wing, limiting his opportunities for more dramatic projects.

There's a long history of UK TV shows being remade for US audiences - with varying degrees of success - but here are 10 iconic UK shows that should never get a US remake. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's The Office had a hugely successful US remake because it took the core concept of the show and expanded it for an American audience. Other UK sitcoms have been less successful, with many attempted US remakes failing to even get commissioned by a network. Often this is because those behind the remakes fail to realize that the UK originals are already responses to hugely successful US TV shows.
US remakes of UK shows often fall at this first hurdle, failing to understand just what made the original successful in the first place. Alternatively, there's Life on Mars, a US remake of the high-concept UK police procedural that satirized macho UK cop shows like The Sweeney.

Yungblud‘s greatest battles are both internal and external on his latest single “Lowlife.” Internally, both literally and figuratively, he can’t get out of the bed, out of the house, or out of his own head. Externally, he can’t get his name out of everyone else’s mouth. Finding himself lower than rock bottom, the British musician settles in there instead of crying to claw his way out.

Life on Mars will not have another sequel series after all. The creators of the UK series have announced that the planned spin-off, titled Lazarus, will not be happening, per Deadline.
The original Life on Mars series aired for two seasons on BBC One between 2006 and 2007. Starring John Simm, Philip Glenister, Liz White, Dean Andrews, and Marshall Lancaster, the sci-fi series follows a cop (Simm) from 2006 who finds himself thrown back in time to 1970s Manchester.

There’s an elite tier of TV dramas that stay with you, vividly, for decades after they air, and seventies-set sci-fi crime drama Life on Mars was the perfect example. So fervent was the show’s fanbase, that even 15 years after it aired – introducing us to detective Sam Tyler (Grace’s John Simm), who has a car crash in 2006 and wakes up mysteriously trapped in 1973 – the news of a planned revival during a lockdown live tweet-along in 2020 was enthusiastically received.
This revival was later fittingly dubbed Lazarus – once again named after a David Bowie song, like Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes – but we’ve now received the sad confirmation from the show’s creators that the reboot won’t be going ahead after all:
It is with a heavy heart that the creators of #LifeOnMars have confirmed that the highly anticipated revival show, #Lazarus, will no longer be moving forward.

The planned Life on Mars sequel series Lazarus is dead in the water. Life on Mars, which aired on the BBC in 2006, followed a man who is sent back to 1973 after a mysterious accident and received a 2008 sequel series titled Ashes to Ashes. In 2020 it was announced that a third sequel titled Lazarus was in production with original stars John Simm and Philip Glenister returning as Detective Inspector Sam Tyler and Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt.
This weekend, the Life on Mars Twitter account posted an unfortunate update on the status of the Lazarus sequel series.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.
