The legacy of heroin kingpin Frank Lucas, whose story was dramatized in the 2007 narrative feature American Gangster, is the focus of a forthcoming documentary film.
Pusherman explores Lucas’ life through the lens of the lore surrounding Black gangsters and is set for DVD release from Mvd Entertainment Group on June 24. Documentarian and author Legs McNeil directs and narrates the movie.
The film features interviews with Mark Jacobson, the journalist whose New York magazine story initially shed light on Lucas’ operation. Other figures included in the project are crime writer Michael Daly, hip-hop historian Fab 5 Freddy and culture pundit Darius James. Pusherman will delve into how Lucas helped to redefine the drug trade, in addition to what his story said about New York City power structures and how he was embraced by the music community.
“Pusherman is the best Behind the Music episode ever done about a non-musical figure,” says Jacobson.

The release of Gladiator 2 has sparked much discussion, particularly surrounding the performance of Paul Mescal, who plays the pivotal role of Lucius Verus. As the first major blockbuster of his career, following his acclaimed work in indie films, Mescal’s casting in Gladiator 2 was highly anticipated. However, his portrayal has been met with mixed reviews, with some critics and fans alike questioning his fit for such a demanding role.

The buzz has been steadily rising the last few weeks for Jon M. Chu’s Wicked Part I, the long-anticipated big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway show. In our weekly box office predictions column, we forecast the movie opening to $120 million, and the film opened just a little bit below that, with an estimated $114 million weekend. That makes it only the fourth film this year to open north of $100 million, and positions it well to keep earning big bucks over the upcoming holiday weekend. While it will see big competition from Moana 2, I expect Wicked to show big staying power, with it possible that the movie will end its domestic run north of $300 million, which is a significant number. While I was wary of it, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it (read my review), and audiences seem to agree, earning an A CinemaScore rating.

However, few know about the personal commitment Washington made early on that paved the way for his remarkable success. The actor made a conscious decision to step away from alcohol and the negatives of addiction. The road ahead was not straight or easy, but this decision helped him in the long run.

Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington were once tapped to play leads in a spy thriller that saw David Cronenberg at the helm. The project never took off as the production house MGM ran into financial issues. This was during the 2008-09 period when Cruise badly wanted to make a comeback. Washington was riding on the success of playing a crime lord in American Gangster, while Cronenberg had A History of Violence and Eastern Promises to his name.

Denzel Washington's accent in Gladiator II has brought criticism to the actor and Ridley Scott's sequel, making it a controversial aspect of the 2024 movie. Once Scott found the right story for a Gladiator sequel, audiences were thrilled to see the collection of stars he could get involved with. This especially included bringing Denzel Washington aboard, marking a reunion between the actor and director over a decade after American Gangster. And by the time the film's marketing campaign kicked off, the anticipation of seeing the two-time Oscar winner's performance was incredibly high.
The Gladiator 2 trailers have shown plenty of Denzel Washington's character Macrinus. He is an arms dealer with a ruthless quality and grand ambitions. Between Denzel's effortless mixture of gravitas, charm, and regalness and the impeccable outfits he's wearing, Macrinus has all the makings of a powerful character that could steal the movie. The 1932 Scarface is deserving of more recognition among its flashy counterparts. Despite being overshadowed by the 1980s remake, the original's gritty noir elements and rich subtext make it a top-tier gangster film. Scarface faced censorship issues and struggled with box office numbers, meaning it never properly had its day in the sun.
Respect is a recurring theme for the dons and crooks in gangster movies, and one classic 1932 release deserves more of it. For the better part of a century, Hollywood has obsessed over gangsters - those smooth-talking, free-living criminals rolling in cash, breaking the law, and being nice to their mothers. The romanticization of the gangster has resulted in stone-cold untouchables such as The Godfather, Goodfellas, and Scarface, as well as classics like American Gangster, The Departed, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Once Upon a Time in America and countless others.

Kangana Ranaut, the Indian actor, filmmaker and member of parliament, is set to release her latest directorial and acting venture “Emergency,” a film that examines one of the most controversial periods in India’s post-independence history.
The Emergency, a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977, saw Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally declare a state of emergency across the country. The Emergency granted the Prime Minister authority to rule by decree, suspending elections and civil liberties.
This period was marked by widespread press censorship, restrictions on civil rights, and the imprisonment of political opponents. The government justified these extreme measures by citing threats to national security and economic instability. The Emergency ended in March 1977 when Indira Gandhi called for fresh elections and was voted out of power, leading to the first non-Congress national government since independence.
Ranaut, born nearly a decade after these events, explains her motivation for making and starring in the film: “I’m ’86 born,...

The following contains major spoilers for Duchess, available digitally on August 9. It also contains discussion of violence.
Duchess will be immediately recognized -- and loved -- by fans of British gangster movies or 1970s action films. It is best described as a cross between the movie adaptation of J.J. Connolly's crime novel Layer Cake and the Gina Carano-led action pic Haywire. While it's a star-making vehicle for Charlotte Kirk, who is not only the lead actor but co-writer and producer, it's enjoyable for anyone who likes a bloody good time.
The picture settles on the title character, who graduates from small-time thief to something much bigger after a chance encounter in a nightclub. What follows does not reinvent the crime movie wheel. The film knows exactly what it needs to give the audience, who can largely guess what's coming. But thanks to an interesting cast and complete commitment to its larger-than-life vibe,...

In Hollywood, everyone is forced to get used to missed opportunities, especially when one has been deep in the trenches trying to get a project made. There are many stories of actors and directors who were marginally close to landing a film before something fell apart ahead of production and things unfortunately didn't work out. Despite an impressive filmography, director Antoine Fuqua says that this very situation happened to him involving a project with Denzel Washington, and it's still one that gets to the filmmaker 17 years later despite having made five movies with Washington.
During the Directors on Directing panel at Sdcc put on by Collider, Fuqua sat alongside fellow director Roland Emmerich, and both filmmakers were asked if they had any projects they were close to doing that ultimately didn't move forward. Fuqua went on to explain that the 2007 film American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington, was the one that got away from him.

Kangana Ranaut has been openly critical of award shows, dismissing them as Trp-driven events where stars perform in exchange for awards. Emraan Hashmi, who also avoids these ceremonies, discussed his views on a podcast interview with Subhankar Mishra, and seemed to indirectly comment on Kangana’s stance.

Ridley Scott is taking audiences back to ancient Rome with the highly anticipated sequel, Gladiator II, set to release later this year. One of the film's stars, Joseph Quinn, recently shared his excitement over participating in the project, and heaped tons of praise on the legendary director he grew up idolizing.
In an interview with Men's Health, Quinn discussed working with Scott on the Gladiator sequel, and how he was inspired by many of Scott's legendary films. "He is a world builder. He creates these films that utterly transport you, and that is a very rare thing to be able to do," Quinn said. The 86-year-old director has been a pillar of cinema for decades, still churning out high quality films such as The Last Duel and his most recent effort, Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix. For Quinn, the director's work has played an instrumental part in his love for cinema.

Denzel Washington stars as a ghost lawyer seeking revenge in the 1990 comedy Heart Condition. The film explores themes of race, friendship, and redemption as a cop receives a heart transplant and undergoes a change of heart. Despite criticism for being a Blaxploitation film, Heart Condition features strong character development and comedic timing from Washington and Bob Hoskins.
Two generations have gotten to know American actor Denzel Washington for his groundbreaking roles as resilient Black men in drama and action movies, such as Malcolm X, American Gangster, or the Equalizer franchise. But few remember the 1990 comedy in which he starred as a ghost lawyer seeking revenge and those that do might prefer to forget it.
Its plot centers around a lawyer, Napoleon Stone (Denzel Washington), who died in an apparent car accident. After his heart is transplanted into the chest of a racist cop, Jack Moony (Bob Hoskins), Stone comes back...

Denzel Washington is easily one of the most admired and respected influences in the entertainment industry, with a presence that never ceases to catch the attention of the entire room he walks in. And yet, he was very well humbled when he came in the presence of the late legendary actor best known for playing James Bond: Sean Connery.

Batman fame Hollywood action director Paul Jennings who is also one of the action directors of War praises Rajat Poddar for this. Rajat Poddar, who has earlier worked as Production Designer for the films Barfi, Jagga Jasoos, Gunday, Gangster, Life in a metro, Baaghi etc says, ?Since the locations are tremendously action-based, so all the sets needed to be made in a very safe way with soft surfaces but keeping all surface textures, molding concepts intact .

’Make Cinema Great Again!’ took place at CONNeXT in Ghent.
Film directors need to have more ambition and a unique cinematic vision to attract sales agents, distributors and ultimately a theatrical audience, agreed a group of European film industry experts at a debate at Flanders Image’s CONNeXT event in the Belgian city of Ghent on Tuesday (October 8).
“I’m looking for something singular, something different,” said Karin Beyens, head of acquisitions at France’s Diaphana Distribution. “Last year we bought Mid 90s and Girl, two films that give you a certain experience. You feel something when you see these films.

Headed by Sylvie and Sophie Kim, the company launched in August last year, in time to make Busan 2018, its first sales market. Since then it has enjoyed sales success with Lee Won-tae’s action thriller “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil,” starring Don Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok from “Train To Busan”).
Earlier this year it sold “Gangster” to WellGo USA for North America. It also licensed the film to Japan (Klockworx), Taiwan (Vie Vision Pictures), Germany, Austria and German-speaking Benelux (Splendid Film), Thailand, Cambodia and Laos (Logo Motion Pictures), India (Viswass Films) and worldwide in-flight (Encore Inflight).
From the same producers, K-Movie is now launching “Spiritwalker,” a fantasy horror about a man who wakes up in a different body every 12 hours. The company is screening a promo trailer from its booth in the Busan International...

The only thing more exhilarating and exhausting than HBO’s stunning summer drama “Euphoria” was its soundtrack. Wound through the sparkly noir soap opera of teens in a love-hate relationship with drugs, sex and themselves was this equally torrid and twilight-y musical tone — an undulating, wall-to-wall set of songs and score crowding around Sam Levinson’s vision of ordinary madness. That there was just enough room for airy, gospel electronica and overheated melodic house to hover atop the proceedings — with the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Bts, Fiona Apple, J Balvin and “Euphoria” actor-singer Zendaya among its often 20-plus songs her episode — was a miracle of music direction.
Labrinth made that miracle happen and created a score as hallucinatory as the images on the screen. The Brit-born dance floor producer and composer best known for bits of Rihanna’s “Unapologetic,” The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness,” and records by Skylar Grey,...

She has been variously tagged the "Queen" of Bollywood, "box-office dynamo" and "one woman army", and habitually takes on Bollywood's bigwigs. Three-time National Award winning actress Kangana Ranaut makes no bones about ruling the industry with her craft, and says she always wanted to be somebody who is not a hero's sidekick.
Kangana ventured into the sparkling world of cinema as a teenager with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's "Gangster" in 2006. Years later she would feature in movies that she has carried on her shoulders, such as "Queen", the "Tanu Weds Manu" franchise and "Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi".
