For many of us, spooky season lasts all year long, especially if you are a fan of horror movies. But with The Conjuring (and its direct sequels) leaving Netflix as of Sept. 30, you may be wondering if there are any similar horror movies you can still watch to get through the rest of the official spooky season.
While The Conjuring is definitely a favorite, there actually are quite a few alternatives on Netflix that are worth watching at least once. And they include at least one movie featuring Ed Warren himself, Patrick Wilson.
The Haunting in Connecticut
The fact that this story starts with a real life trauma thanks to a cancer diagnosis makes this horror movie that much more engaging. Paranormal horror is a vast genre that includes a variety of topics, themes, and sub-genres. From icons of the genre, such as The Grudge and The Haunting In Connecticut, to modern sensations such as Smile, there are various supernatural concepts for different fans. Though the genre continues to be a dominant force in horror entertainment, it has also gained a bad reputation for often being unoriginal, cheesy, and predictable.
Among the hundreds of films exploring paranormal themes, there are a select few that stand out for being a unique and memorable inclusion. These particularly impactful horror movies range from indie hits like Hereditary to classic franchises such as A Nightmare On Elm Street. This collection of paranormal horror movies is not just entertaining and scary but includes a fresh take that revolutionized the genre.

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

Just before Halloween back in 2022, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. A few months ago, we learned that Magenta Light Studios will be giving Strange Darling a wide theatrical release in the United States on August 23rd – and now a trailer has arrived online to give us a preview of what this movie will have in store for us when it reaches the big screen in a couple months. You can check it out in the embed above.

Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.
The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.
Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

2023 was a solid year for horror films, and even still, there were plenty of gems that went criminally underseen. Fortunately, because horror fans are some of the most rabid (see: passionate) fans around, even movies denied multi-million dollar ad campaigns can still find their people through word-of-mouth praise, fan art, and obsessive gushing. "The Ruins," "Jamie Marks is Dead," "Swallowed," and "Midnight Kiss" director Carter Smith's latest feature film is also his best, which is why it's such a shame that "The Passenger" (read our review here) is only now picking up mainstream attention. A thrilling two-hander starring horror fan favorite Kyle Gallner and relative newcomer Johnny Berchtold, "The Passenger" is the spiritual successor to Robert Harmon's "The Hitcher," and just as brutal.
Berchtold's Randy is not just your average fast food worker, he might as well be invisible. He's passive to the point of enduring exploitation from everyone around him,...

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

The Haunting in Connecticut is based on a semi-true story of a family tormented by dark spirits in their new home, with a focus on Matt's cancer and Peter's alcoholism. Matt defeats the evil spirits by breaking down the walls and freeing the trapped corpses, ultimately lighting the house on fire to end the haunting. Jonah is an important character who is actually a victim. Nicholas's attempts to help worsen the situation and put Matt's family in danger.

The Haunting in Connecticut is marketed as a true story, but its origins are more complicated. The movie is based on the Snedeker family's experiences, although creative liberties were taken. The Snedeker family claimed to have experienced paranormal activity in their home, which had previously been a funeral home. They sought help from exorcists and paranormal investigators, and the activity allegedly stopped after an exorcism. The claim that The Haunting in Connecticut is based on a true story is controversial. The book's author, Ray Garton, was allegedly told to fictionalize parts of the story by Ed and Lorraine Warren, and both the Warrens and the Snedekers deny certain claims. The truth remains uncertain.

This article contains spoilers for "The Nun II."
The events of "The Nun II" pick up four years after "The Nun," with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) called once again to assist with taking down the demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) following a string of priest murders throughout Europe. Unfortunately, Sister Irene doesn't know what audiences who saw the previous film already do, which is that Valak has been using Maurice "Frenchie" Theriault's (Jonas Bloquet) body as a vessel, as proven by the inverted cross embedded in his skin. When we catch up with Frenchie, he's started working at a girl's boarding school as a handyman, and in a will-they/won't-they relationship with one of the teachers, Kate (Anna Popplewell). He's become somewhat of a father figure to her daughter, Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), and has built a wonderful life for himself. Alas, Valak refuses to stay contained for long, and Sister...

‘The Amityville Murders’ – A Ghoulish and Exploitative Look at the DeFeo Murders [The Amityville IP]
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something frustrating about a film that begins with a lot of potential, and then thoroughly squanders it.
Writer/director Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders is one such film. It’s one of the few “true” entries from the last dozen or so films, in that it actually tackles the Amityville story by focusing on the true crime murders of the DeFeo family. It’s well-shot, looks good, has mostly decent (albeit broad) performances.
These are all things that many of the IP cash-grab entries have been lacking.
Unfortunately it’s also incredibly sensational, relies too heavily on repetitive supernatural elements, and – most egregiously – features a distasteful ending that highlights Farrands’ unfortunate tendency to exploit real life tragedy for cash.
If the name sounds familiar,...

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

Beginning with Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist in the '60s and '70s, the best exorcism movies have deftly combined the psychological thrills of the unseen with the visceral and grotesque manifestations of malevolent spirits. Whether it is demons, tormented human souls, gods, or creatures from folklore, exorcists in movies confront the worst and most dangerous entities to crossover into the physical realm. Scary exorcism movies are traditionally based on Catholic or Judeo-Christian mythology. However, Asian filmmakers have also been tapping into Eastern folklore and mythology to contribute to the world's best exorcism movies, giving the overplayed horror subgenre a much-needed shakeup.
Indeed, while movies about demonic possession such as The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism of God keep the genre's core traditions alive, others like The Medium, The Wailing, and Keeper of Darkness tread new ground and open new creative avenues for the exorcism subgenre to grow. Today,...

Citing 19th Century patriotic poetry and Mussolini-era writers and philosophers, the freshly appointed culture minister of Italy’s new right-wing government has promised a new era for the country’s cultural sector and revealed he wants to reform state funding for the performances arts.
Gennaro Sangiuliano is among 24 ministers in the new government of Giorgia Meloni, who was sworn in as Italian prime minister on Sunday, three-and-a-half weeks after her far-right Brothers of Italy party (Fratelli d’Italia) swept to victory in general elections.
Sangiuliano arrives from state broadcaster Rai, where he worked since 2003, rising through the ranks to become editor-in-chief of news programming at Italian state channel Rai 2 in 2018.
He replaces Dario Franceschini of the centre-left Democratic Party, who was Italy’s longest-serving minister of culture, and the TV and film worlds are now waiting to see what this means for the sectors.

Lionsgate will be unleashing the exorcism-based horror movie Prey for the Devil (formerly The Devil’s Light) in theaters on October 28, 2022, and a new image has arrived today.
In Prey for the Devil, “In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, the Catholic Church reopens exorcism schools to train priests in the Rite of Exorcism. On this spiritual battlefield, an unlikely warrior rises: a young nun, Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers).
“Although nuns are forbidden to perform exorcisms, a professor recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro; “13 Reasons Why”), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl (who Sister Ann believes is possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago), and soon realizes the Devil has her right where he wants her….and it wants in.

Exclusive: Producer Steve Whitney and his company Tsw Films have purchased Suge Knight’s life rights with plans to develop a biopic on the infamous music mogul, bringing Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne aboard to write the script.
The former music exec born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded the iconic label Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing the subgenre of gangsta rap into the mainstream. Artists signed to the label included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur—and those three acts alone changed the face of hip hop with the release of the groundbreaking albums The Chronic, Doggystyle and All Eyez on Me. Knight’s label had enormous success with over 50 artists and profits of over $100 million a year, but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, the murder of Tupac and the 2018 incarceration of Knight on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.

One Tree Hill and Riverdale star Chad Michael Murray has signed on to play an infamous serial killer in Voltage Pictures' upcoming thriller Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman. Murray will join the likes of NCIS star Mark Harmon and most recently Zac Efron, who earned much critical acclaim for his portrayal of the '70s killer in 2019's Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
While Chad Michael Murray may seem a surprising choice to play Bundy, the studio has confidence in the casting choice. "Ted Bundy is such a fascinatedly divisive character and is the true personification of evil," said Voltage Pictures president and COO Jonathan Deckter. "Murray is so talented and expertly captures Bundy's charm and seductive nature, traits that the notorious killer exploited to win the trust of his victims as well as society. Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

It still might be a little while before we’re able to go back to the movies again. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for February 2021, Amazon Prime is bringing the theater home. The movies are the real appeal this month.
Amazon’s offerings are highlighted by two original films of note. The first is Bliss, which premieres on Feb. 5. This will star Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek as a couple experiencing some intimacy issues. Presumably this is all just a tune up for when Wilson dons a mustache in Disney+’s Loki later in May. The other film is the sci-fi rom-com The Map of Tiny Perfect Things on Feb. 12.
Other library movies include Antz, Moulin Rouge, The Prestige, The Village, and Dazed and Confused, all of which arrive on Feb. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog is set to arrive later on Feb. 18.
Amazon is premiering only one new original series this month.

Hulu has revealed the first poster, as well as a premiere date, for Books of Blood. The new horror anthology movie will be adapting tales from author Clive Barker's book series of the same name. The good news for horror fans is that it will be arriving just in time for Halloween, with a premiere date set for October 7. The poster was shared on Twitter with the following caption.
"Step into uncharted and forbidden territory. Based on Clive Barker's acclaimed and influential horror anthology book series, #BooksOfBlood, a Hulu Original film premieres on October 7 on Hulu."
Brannon Braga (The Orville) is directing, marking his feature debut. Braga also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Adam Simon. Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

We have more sad news to pass along today as word has come in that veteran movie and television actress Galyn Görg has passed away. Along with many other roles, Gorg is particularly known for her role as Angie in the 1990 action sequel RoboCop 2, though she had still been acting professionally as recently as last year. Reportedly, Gorg died on the day of her 56th birthday on July 15 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
To help pay for funeral expenses, Gorg's family has launched a GoFundMe page to kindly ask for donations. "She was diagnosed with cancer throughout her entire body and lungs. The doctors claimed she only had days maybe a week to live, and after remaining optimistic and praying for a miracle, she has sadly passed," the GoFundMe page description reads, noting the family had spent a lot of money to fly the actress to Oahu for her cancer treatments.

The streamer is looking for a presitgious, central location in the Eternal City.
Netflix will relocate its Italian team from Amsterdam to Rome within the next year, according to reports in Italian newspaper Il Messaggero today (January 24).
The move is understood to have been prompted by a tax evasion investigation into Netflix by Gaetano Ruta, the vice-district attorney of Milan in 2019. Italian law requires the streaming compamny, and any other Ott operating in the territory, to have an Italian headquarters.

Lorraine Warren, who along with her husband Ed, investigated cases that inspired The Conjuring, Annabelle, and more, had died.
A legend in the world of ghosts, on this plane of existence and perhaps the next, has passed on.
Lorraine Warren, purported medium, ghost hunter, and author involved with cases popularized in paranormal pop culture films The Amityville Horror, The Conjuring, The Haunting in Connecticut, and Annabelle, has died at age 92. According to her son-in-law Tony Spera, Warren passed away in her sleep last night.
Lorraine -- along with her husband Ed, who died in 2006 -- founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, and claim to have investigated more than 10,000 paranormal cases. The duo became celebrities who appeared on talk shows, and gave lectures on the topics of ghosts, and demonology.

Lorraine Warren, a noted paranormal investigator and author who, along with her husband Ed, was the subject of James Wan’s The Conjuring films, has died. Warren died “peacefully in her sleep,” Thursday night according to Facebook posts by her grandson Chris McKinnell and The New England Society for Psychic Research.
Warren was a professed clairvoyant and a light trance medium who worked closely with her husband, who together were associated with some of the most prominent cases of hauntings and possessions. Ed Warren died in 2006.
Their cases became the inspiration for blockbuster horror films such The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, which were based on the Warrens’ real-life events. Set in Rhode Island in 1971, the 2013 film starred Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, who portrayed Warren, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Foy, and Joey King. Prequel Annabelle was released the following year and The Conjuring 2 in 2016. In 2013’s The Conjuring,...

The comedy thriller Tone-Deaf held its world premiere this month at SXSW, and it left me walking away with mixed feelings. Directed by Richard Bates Jr., there was a lot of potential this movie had to offer. Bates Jr. has previously made a name for himself with movies like Excision and Trash Fire, and the rising filmmaker will likely bring us many more interesting and unique movies in the years ahead. While Tone-Deaf has many of its own memorable moments, however, it's safe to say it won't be considered by many to be Bates Jr.'s best work.
In Tone-Deaf, millennial Olive decides to take a vacation for herself by renting a weekend stay in a rural mansion, far away from her city life troubles. Unfortunately, she doesn't realize the widowed homeowner Harvey (Robert Patrick) is suffering from dementia, resulting in a homicidal psychosis. Determined to see what it feels like to kill someone,...

Directed by Dominic Sena and written by Tim Metcalfe with Stephen Levy, Kalifornia is essentially a snapshot of the early 1990s. The film centers on a cute creative couple that feel something is missing in their lives, and so wish to go to California to liven up their work lives. Carrie, played by Michelle Forbes is a photographer who specializes in edgy black-and-white nudes and fetish shots, is the type of strong, take-no-shit woman who embodies the cultural shift that '90s ladies did --- a precursor to the Riot Grrls in black leather boots and red lipstick with an empowered view. Her boyfriend Brian, played...
