Conceptually one of the strongest episodes, let down by monster visual

The great thing about Blake's 7 is that it was-most of the time at least-real science-fiction. This episode is, conceptually, one of the very strongest, bringing together two kinds of alien biology, computer science, the first credible space battle in the show and an excellent twist. All TV SF is quickly surpassed by improved graphics. Sadly, the appearance of the monsters in this episode jars so much with the overall quality, close to the climax, that its power is reduced. Even so, as a carefully constructed SF adventure, this one takes some beating... except that the next one, The City at the End of the World, is even better, and is not let down by anything.

Trivia
The giant spider costume was nicknamed "Brian the Spider" by make-up designer Sheelagh Wells, in an effort to counteract her arachnophobia. She thought that if the spider had a name, it couldn't be very frightening. Her approach worked.

Goofs
Tarrant is far too young to have served as a Lieutenant fifteen years before this story takes place.

Well, the Liberator will soon be diffusing itself throughout the galaxy as so many billion split particles. So, regrettably, we shall never know. Thanks to the folly of your president, who with her aides and her technical advisors, her battle computers and her captains, extravagantly disposed herself to use *four* pursuit ships. And yet any fool could have done it with three. Perhaps this particular fool will tell her how.
