Receiving a mixture of raves, polite applause, and a handful of outright naysayers, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest concoction Inherent Vice comes to Blu-ray for critical reconsideration. Snagging two Academy Award nominations (Best Adapted Screenplay; Costume Design) and a Golden Globe nod for Joaquin Phoenix, it was an uncustomarily muted awards season for Anderson, while the box office take didn’t really pick up the slack. Still, its bizarre loopiness and distinction as the first cinematic adaptation of Thomas Pynchon should instill a healthy shelf life.
For his seventh film, we receive a queasy mix of gonzo comic neo-noir basted in the seedy nostalgic twinge of sleazy 70s era Los Angeles teased with a numbing carnival of multifaceted tangential characters diluting the film’s potency to the reductive force equal to a generous clusterfuck of all things strange. Fluctuating styles and clashing tones further enhance the film’s resounding detachment from a core ‘mystery,...

The Vice is Right: Anderson’s Inherently Incoherent Pynchon Trip
For his seventh film, auteur Paul Thomas Anderson stakes a claim as the first filmmaker to adapt author Thomas Pynchon, electing to tackle the 2009 novel Inherent Vice. The result is a queasy mix of gonzo comic neo-noir basted in the seedy nostalgic twinge of sleazy 70s era Los Angeles teased with a numbing carnival of multifaceted tangential characters diluting the film’s potency to the reductive force equal to a generous clusterfuck of all things strange. Fluctuating styles and clashing tones further enhance the film’s resounding detachment from a core ‘mystery,’ though for a while Anderson often masters a nifty balancing act of convincing us of the film’s ability to remain idiosyncratic and without much by way of narrative substance.
Set in 1970 Southern California, the tale begins in Gordito Beach, at the home of private investigator Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix). An ex-girlfriend,...

Well, it seems that big-screen adaptation of Adam Rapp’s dark play Red Light Winter has found new life, hiring Contraband thesp Ben Foster instead of a vet Mark Ruffalo.
Foster is joining the previously cast Kirsten Dunst and a stage vet Katherine Waterston.
Actor-playwright Rapp will adapt his own play of the same name following ‘two male friends who travel from New York to Amsterdam and become caught up in a love triangle with a prostitute, bringing to the surface dark undercurrents in their troubled friendship.’
Foster will play an anxious emerging writer; Bachelorette star Dunst will play the sex worker, while Waterston (The Babysitters) is set to co-star as another woman who shares a romantic past with both men.
If Rapp finds the right actor to replace Billy Crudupt, who also dropped out due to a change in schedule, the plan is to shoot Red Light Winter in December or January.

Despite the fact that John Leguizamo is part, Super Mario Bros., one of the worst video game adaptations of all time, his work in films like Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, The Babysitters and The Lincoln Lawyer have proven that he's a strong force on screen, not to mention his voice work as Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age films. Now the actor is taking on two more high profile roles that hopefully get him some more earned attention. Deadline has word that Leguizamo has signed on for roles in both Ridley Scott's The Counselor starring Michael Fassbender, and the comic sequel Kick-Ass 2 from Jeff Wadlow. Scott's film The Counselor, with a script from No Country for Old Men writer Cormac McCarthy already has a stellar cast including Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz so Leguizamo is just icing on the cake.

There were a lot of bad movies released during the past decade. That’s not anything that distinguishes the aughts from any other decade before it, but then most of these movies were bad in the usual, torturous ways. There is, of course, a lot of room for debate over these picks and readers should be aware that for my own sanity (sorry Rob Schneider), I purposefully skipped many top contenders. Without further ado, in descending order, our worst 15: The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) I’m not a fan of movies about really stupid people behaving stupidly, and that’s all that happens in this smoldering pile of TV adapted junk. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott indulge their worst instincts in a laugh free assemblage of moronic Southern stereotypes and car crashes that’s like a horrible, Z grade 80s comedy nightmare come to life. Alexandra Daddario has nabbed the lead female role in Fox 2000's "Percy Jackson."
The actress joins Logan Lerman and Brandon T. Jackson in the fantasy-adventure movie being directed by Chris Columbus. Columbus and Craig Titley have adapted the screenplay from Rick Riordan's bestselling children's novel "The Lightning Thief."
The Greek mythology-inflected book involves Poseidon's half-human son, Percy, who's on a quest across modern America to prevent a war among the gods. Daddario will play Athena's teenage daughter, Annabeth, a warrior at Camp Half-Blood with Percy and potential romantic foil.
"The Lightning Thief" is the first of five novels about Percy Jackson and the Olympians -- the fifth, "The Last Olympian," is due in stores in May. The studio hopes to spin the books into a franchise in the "Harry Potter" mold; Columbus directed and/or produced three of those films for Warner Bros.

Leguizamo Keeps His Clothes On For Sex Scene
John Leguizamo fought to keep his clothes on for awkward sex scenes in his new film The Babysitters - because he didn't like the idea of himself or his young co-star appearing naked on the screen.
The Moulin Rouge star teamed up with Sam Waterston's young daughter Katherine in her first big screen role, and he was dead set against either of them getting naked.
He says, "I was mortified about the situation because, in the script, she's underage - 16 - and in high school. Luckily it was Katherine and she's legal.
"I wanted it to be more in your mind. I didn't want to do nudity in the film, maybe it's my ex-Catholic nature but I found it too much, so we kept our clothes on and the sex was in your own dirty mind."
But the film, about an enterprising babysitter who launches an escort agency for sex-starved dads, has prompted the actor to think long and hard about his own daughter's future dating games.
He says, "I hope my daughter is a lesbian because that would be a lot easier. That's not a joke.
"Everything is sexualised in our society. It's great that it's free but then there's no code of ethics or how does this all get worked out when everybody is so stimulated with the young folk and even the older folk are on Viagra. It's all such a mess."...
