Actor Milla Jovovich saw her breakthrough role in 1997, when she played Leeloo in The Fifth Element. Jovovich had taken on supporting roles in movies such as Chaplin and Dazed and Confused, but her bigger role in The Fifth Element made Hollywood aware of who she was. The sci-fi movie was also significant in her life in that it brought together her and director Luc Besson. Besson and Jovovich entered a relationship and married in 1997.
However, Jovovich and Besson's romantic bond was not long for this world. While the pair would go on to make another movie together, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, in 1999, their marriage ended up falling apart. Besson and Jovovich got divorced in 1999, after only two years of marriage. Now, the actor has been married to director Paul W.S. Anderson, who she also met on a set, since 2009. Romance and war seem like strange bedfellows, but cinema has shown time and time again that the pair naturally work together. The inherent violent and grim nature of war can serve as the perfect storytelling counterpoint to the joys of love. Moreover, war is incredibly dangerous, and this creates an ever-present risk to lovers and often creates a plot obstacle for them to overcome.
Predictably, not all wartime romances end with a 'happily ever after,' but bittersweet tales of a passionate love well lived can be heartwarming in their own right. On the other hand, when the audience encounters one of those few miraculous couples who manage to defy the odds, it's incredibly uplifting. No matter the region or the battle being fought, films have proven that love blossoms despite all odds.

When it first aired in 2000, "Six Feet Under" was unknowingly part of the dawn of a golden age of television. Alongside early-aughts HBO hits like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," the tragicomedy told the story of a family-run funeral home trying to make sense of life and death in the wake of the sudden loss of their father.
A revival has reportedly been in the works for some time, despite the fact that it would seemingly be in conflict with what is arguably the greatest series finale of a TV show ever. Still, the mere idea of a return to these loveable, complicated, and tragic characters makes us wonder what happened to the cast of "Six Feet Under?"

Cole Webley, a Salt Lake City-based director, spent decades dreaming of premiering one of his films in Park City. The Utah native has attended the Sundance Film Festival for nearly 20 years, waiting in long lines as the snow fell around him, shivering in the cold in hopes of catching a hot new movie. He’d also tried and failed to get five of his short films into competition.
“To say that I had an affinity towards the festival would be an understatement,” Webley says. “It’s been the pinnacle of what I had hoped to achieve.”
This year, Webley finally gets his wish. “Omaha,” a drama about a struggling father embarking on a cross-country trip with his two daughters, will debut on the first day of Sundance. The inclusion of “Omaha” is meaningful to him in other ways. The film was largely shot around Utah with a local crew, so...

The early outline of Tribbie’s kit in Honkai: Star Rail 3.1 has allegedly been leaked, and while she was expected to operate within a certain role in team comps, it seems like she will have an unexpected gameplay design that will force her to be played in an entirely different fashion than anticipated. Tribbie is one of the new characters from Amphoreus, described as The Messenger. The character, who is considered one of the Chrysos Heirs, is represented by a trio of short red-headed girls. Tribbie had been teased when developer HoYoverse presented the Amphoreus characters in Honkai: Star Rail.
The triplets who compose Tribbie as a character were shown running across several doorways highlighting their lore-related ability to traverse through myriad doors and bring tidings from other worlds. Tribbie will not be made playable during Version 3.0, which will see the releases of The Herta, Aglaea, and the Remembrance Trailblazer,...

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City's Jen Shah is currently in prison, and it's time to update fans about her. Jen made her debut on Rhoslc season 1 and portrayed herself as an affluent, successful businesswoman who earned her wealth by investing in many different companies and many things. According to Jen, she had carved out a direct response marketing niche, bringing her millions in returns. Jen's dramatic and lavish personality quickly made her a standout cast member. However, that mirage crumbled after production began for Rhoslc season 2 when Jen and one of her assistants, Stuart Smith, were arrested in Utah.
Jen and her co-conspirators were subsequently accused of scamming innocent individuals out of their money through fraudulent schemes. Throughout Rhoslc seasons 2 and 3, Jen denied these allegations. Jen initially entered a not-guilty plea after being charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. However, she eventually pleaded guilty...

Warning: this article contains slight spoilers for Wicked: Part One
Wicked was already a massively popular musical, but the new film adaptation has already proven to be as celebrated as its predecessor. Wicked boasts an incredibly talented cast, led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, who make the characters and their songs come to life in a new way. Initially inspired by The Wizard of Oz and the Wicked book, the movie is able to focus on Elphaba's story in a way that expands upon the musical, in part due to the decision to split Wicked into two parts.
Even with the knowledge that Wicked: Part Two will add more to the story, fans and critics are already lauding Wicked. The movie currently holds an 89% critical approval rating and 96% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and there is already Oscars buzz surrounding it. Additionally, while...

Wicked, the new movie based on the hit Broadway show, is officially a success. Actually, it's a historic success: it's the highest-grossing movie ever to be based on a Broadway musical, at least at the domestic box office; and the soundtrack is topping multiple Billboard charts. Audiences are primed for Wicked: Part 2, which will close out this prequel to The Wizard of Oz when it comes out next November.
Wicked: Part 1 adapts the first act of the Broadway musical, and it pretty much includes everything fans are expecting. There are a couple of new bits — a chase sequence with flying moneys here, a couple of crowd-pleasing cameos there — but generally it sticks very close to the original show by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
And that's despite Schwartz himself trying to change up some aspects. For instance, he told The Times that he'd considered putting a new spin on the song "Popular,...

Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann has spent over 30 years developing a film about the legendary Joan of Arc. The project is finally moving forward after Luhrmann secured backing from Warner Bros. The historical epic will focus on themes of empowering youth and societal change that still resonate today.
Luhrmann hopes to refresh the iconic story of Joan of Arc for contemporary times. He will draw from Thomas Keneally’s novel “Blood Red, Sister Rose” for source material. The film aims to portray Joan not just as a religious figure, but as a teenage girl who must find her identity during a time of war.
Joan of Arc led the French army to a major victory against English forces at Orléans in 1429 at a young age. Tragically, she faced execution for heresy just two years later. Luhrmann sees parallels between the challenges Joan faced and issues important to youth today. He wants...

Bob Denver began his professional television career in 1957, appearing in one episode of "The Silent Service," but his career took off in earnest in 1959 when he was cast as the comedic beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in the long-running sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." He appeared in 144 episodes of that series throughout its four seasons, cementing Denver as a reliable, funny supporting player.
After "Dobie Gillis," Denver secured a few notable gigs, appearing on "The Andry Griffith Show" and "Dr. Kildare," as well as the feature films "Take Her, She's Mine," and "For Those Who Think Young." By 1964, however, Denver's legacy was secured when he was cast as the title character in Sherwood Schwartz's hit sitcom "Gilligan's Island." Although that series only lasted 98 episodes in three seasons, it was a massive hit, beloved by audiences everywhere. Marc Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Oren Moverman in which the memoir’s author Jay Parini finds himself stuck in a Morris Minor chauffeuring the brilliant, blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges through Scotland in 1970.
As a young student, Parini harbours dreams of becoming a writer and struggles to make sense of the 70-year-old, irrepressible Borges, until events take a surreal turn, leading the men to a place where they find common ground. The cast includes Peter Mullan and Harriet Sansom Harris.

Warner Bros is backing Baz Luhrmann’s new film, as he embarks on a Joan Of Arc project: more on the film here.
We’ve seen Joan Of Arc brought to life on the big screen before, with the French peasant girl turned military leader having been rendered on the screen as early as 1928’s The Passion Of Joan Arc.
Like any historical figure worth their salt, Joan Of Arc was also the subject of competing projects at one point back in the late 1990s when a Canadian mini-series and the Luc Besson-helmed Milla Jovovich-led film The Messenger arrived in the very same year.
You know what we’ve never seen though? A Baz Luhrmann take on Joan of Arc.

In what is shaping up to be a rather thin awards season, could a small but formidable film, written and directed by a filmmaker with three Oscar winners in his family, find its way into contention?
That’s what Falling Forward Films is betting on in acquiring the U.S. distribution rights for Jack Huston’s impressive directorial debut Day of the Fight, a black-and-white indie about a once-renowned boxer — played by Huston’s former Boardwalk Empire costar Michael C. Pitt — as he takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he was released from prison.
Indeed, the upstart distributor has already begun mounting an awards campaign for the film, which also stars Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yusef, Steve Buscemi (another Boardwalk Empire alum) and — coming out of retirement to make a brief but shattering appearance — Oscar winner Joe Pesci.

It’s always fascinating when a movie with a top star, and directed by another star, goes as far under the radar as Steve Buscemi‘s “The Listener,” starring Tessa Thompson, has.
But in the case of this particularly gentle movie — available on VOD now for $6.99 — maybe that’s part of its DNA. Like the mental health helpline operator Thompson plays, this is a movie that’s there if you need it: Quiet, thoughtful, and totally shunning the kind of splashiness that most movies are thought to require these days to stand out.
“The Listener” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, where it was the closing night film of the Venice Days sidebar. On April 13, it was the closing night film of the Sarasota Film Festival, out of competition — in this over 18-month festival journey, it’s also made stops at the festivals in Vienna, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, The Hague,...

Producers of the upcoming musical comedy Ghost Of John McCain have responded to angry comments made by the late senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, saying that they will again extend an invitation to Meghan and husband Ben Domenech to attend a reading of the musical before it opens Off Broadway this fall.
“We think they will love it, just as audiences have to date,” said producers Jason Rose and Max Fose in a statement responding to tweets made by Meghan McCain earlier this week in which she called the musical – which she apparently has not seen – “trash” and “a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people.”
As Deadline reported Tuesday, Ghost of John McCain, a musical comedy set inside the brain of Donald Trump, will make its world premiere Off Broadway this fall. The musical, written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola and produced by a team that includes political...

The Listener has had a long and winding journey to its late March 2024 release. The movie, opening in theaters and available on video-on-demand tomorrow, is genuinely moving. Much of that credit should go to the director and actor, who seem in sync in tone and highlight an exploration of compassion and empathy.
Tessa Thompson delivers a terrific performance in The Listener, taking the viewer on a journey that’s fulfilling. Director Steve Buscemi coaxes out a cinematic experience that seems to aim to build a therapeutic rapport with its audience. This results in a “bottle” film with only one cast member, whom you can’t pull your eyes away from.

Uuuuahhhhhhhhh?!? Patricia Richardson is perplexed by Tim Allen’s recent claims about a Home Improvement reboot series. Richardson played Jill Taylor, the wife of Tim “The Toolman” Taylor in the 1990s sitcom, whose iron grip on the Taylor household helped keep the family unit from falling into disrepair. 2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

The digital release of the 2024 musical remake of Mean Girls arrived on February 20th, but not included was a joke utilizing the term “fire crotch,” which was reportedly removed after Lindsay Lohan expressed “hurt and disappointment” over the remark.
The joke in question is delivered by Megan Thee Stallion, portraying herself. Stating her support for the film’s protagonist, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), she says: “We are going back red. Y2K fire crotch is back!”
Lohan, who portrayed Cady in the 2004 original and even makes a cameo in the new 2024 film, expressed her distaste for the joke through a publicist, Leslie Sloane, who told The Messenger that she was “very hurt and disappointed by the reference.” The term “fire crotch” was previously associated with her in 2006 when socialite Brandon Davis made derogatory comments about her in a viral video featuring Paris Hilton.

A not-so-fetch joke has been removed from the “Mean Girls” (2024) movie musical for its digital release.
The quip in question seemingly referred to original 2004 “Mean Girls” star Lindsay Lohan as “fire crotch,” a callback to an infamous TMZ paparazzi video in which socialite Brandon Davis made comments about Lohan’s body.
In the new “Mean Girls,” rapper Megan Thee Stallion — playing herself — uses the term to reference Lohan. The scene comes in the final moments of the film during a prom sequence, where Stallion, tells the new Cady Heron (Angourie Rice; Lohan was the Og Cady): “We are going back red. Y2K fire crotch is back!”
The updated cut for streaming and VOD release now has Stallion solely saying, “We are going back to red” — you can watch the re-edited version here.
Paramount did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on this story.

The new Mean Girls film is heading to digital but Paramount has wisely removed a joke that offended original star Lindsay Lohan. More below.
Despite mixed reviews and trailers, which didn’t really make it clear it was a musical, Mean Girls has had a very successful run at the global box office. The film has grossed over $100 million worldwide, but it also caused some controversy upon release.
Lindsay Lohan, who played the main role of Cady Heron in the original 2004 film, was said to have been “hurt” by a joke in the film.
The “joke” in question happens during a montage which showcases online videos made in Cady’s (played by Angourie Rice in the new film) support.
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, playing herself, is shown in a video saying “We are going back red. Y2K fire crotch is back!”

A joke referencing the term “fire crotch” has been removed from the digital version of 2024’s “Mean Girls” after Lindsay Lohan publicly took issue with it.
“Fire crotch” was infamously associated with Lohan after socialite Brandon Davis made crude comments about the actor’s body in a 2006 paparazzi video that also featured Paris Hilton.
Lohan, who played Cady Heron in the 2004 original “Mean Girls,” made a cameo in this year’s movie musical rendition. After the film’s release, her representative Leslie Sloane told The Messenger, “Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film.”

The lead content editor of the popular broadcast publication TV NewsCheck says the company needs to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to address a slowdown in advertising revenue before it can restart its news operations.
In a message posted to social media on Thursday, TV NewsCheck Editor Michael Depp said the outlet has been “inundated by phone calls, emails and text messages from broadcasters and readers in allied fields asking how they can help.”
The solution is simple: Depp says readers need to make a financial contribution to the platform in the form of an annual subscription to their premium product, Tvn Plus.
“At the risk of sounding like a telethon, we need 1,500 broadcasters to subscribe, today, to Tvn Plus,” Depp wrote. “For just $199 for an annual subscription, you will allow us to turn the lights back on as soon as next week.”

UK sales outfit Bankside Films has unveiled a first look image of Mala Emde in the role of Vera Brandes in Ido Fluk’s The Girl From Köln, as well as a slew of key deals on the film as the company heads into the European Film Market (EFM).
The feature, currently in post-production, tells the little-known story of one of the best-selling jazz records of all time, US pianist Keith Jarrett’s 1975 Köln Concert, and how one formidable German teenager, Vera Brandes, was instrumental in its creation. Bankside will be showing a sales promo to buyers at the EFM.
