Kevin Bacon’s career had quite a jumpstart before he played Footloose’s Ren McCormack, his breakout role. The actor also confirmed he loves the Kenny Loggins song, but Bacon never wants to hear that again at wedding receptions.
Footloose was a pop-culture phenomenon that launched Kevin Bacon’s budding career to stardom. Ren McCormack remains one of his most iconic roles, so much so that he still gets requests to reprise it at wedding receptions. Bacon has apparently attended too many weddings where he was coaxed to do the Footloose dance during throwdowns; that’s now the one song he asks wedding DJs not to play. “It’s not because I don’t love the song, I do love this song. It’s not because I’m not proud of the movie, I’m 100% proud of it,” he explained (per Variety). He just noticed that once that song plays,...

One of Star Wars’ most compelling and powerful Sith Lords, Darth Maul is a persistent menace whose Sith Code perfectly mirrors Palpatine and the Empire’s rise in power. One of Palpatine’s earliest apprentices, Maul knew enough of his master’s plan to predict the Republic’s fall and Darth Vader’s ascension well before Order 66. If the Jedi Order had paid more attention to Maul’s creed, they may have seen their destruction coming.

When it comes to “epic sagas,” horror might not be the genre that first comes to mind. Sure, there are long-lasting franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Saw, and Scream. But in terms of long-form storytelling with world-building and distinct character arcs, the closest to a “saga” would likely be The Walking Dead, with not only its main storyline in both comics and TV, but its many spin-offs as well.
It’s also not always the first genre folks think of when the term “worlds colliding” comes to mind. Of course, there’s your Alien vs. Predator and Freddy vs. Jason—but that’s just it, it’s always two characters opposing one another. Seldom are there team-ups, converging timelines, and characters from vastly different landscapes put in a position to work together in horror; that’s generally saved for your standard superhero fare.
But that’s exactly what happens...

The "sophomore slump" in art is such an assumed phenomenon that it feels almost unfairly like a prerequisite more than a common occurrence. Sure, many creatives often follow up groundbreaking debuts with efforts that don't quite reach the same level of quality and/or success, but there are far more whose follow-up album or film is just as good in its own unique way. In some cases, it takes time for these works to be fully appreciated, as the fog of hype and expectation can cloud one's judgment, of course. These factors are only heightened by the volume of opinions from audiences and critics who wish to participate in another trend that's commonly associated with follow-up films: people love to pile on what negativity they can, perhaps to prove that an artist isn't as good as they've been cracked up to be, or to humble them, or whatever psychology you'd...

Wan's remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon will finally bring a famous monster back to life after 40 years of failed attempts. Universal's history of failed attempts with famous directors like John Carpenter makes Wan's revival of the classic monster a highly anticipated endeavor. If the Creature reboot works, maybe Wan could head up a revival of the Dark Universe too.
James Wan's remake of a Universal horror classic can finally bring a famous monster back to life after 40 years of development hell. James Wan's movies primarily belong to the horror genre, though he's dabbled in everything from thrillers (Death Sentence) to blockbusters (Aquaman). Wan famously burst onto the scene with 2004's no-budget horror flick Saw, and over the years has terrified viewers with both the Insidious and The Conjuring movies. According to The Numbers, his directorial work alone has generated over $4 billion worldwide.

The Death Wish franchise, which began in 1974 and is based on a novel of the same name, has featured plenty of famous actors. Recognizable faces like Jeff Goldblum appear in cameos and antagonist roles, adding depth and diversity to the cast. The 2018 reboot sticks to the original's core, with Bruce Willis leading as Kersey & familiar faces like Elisabeth Shue starring.
The Death Wish franchise is thematically tricky, especially in an age where people truly seem to end debates with bullets as often as words. However, Brian Garfield's novel and its sequel, Death Sentence, are far more inclined to express repulsion towards unnecessary violence than admiration. Can the same be said for the films, which made the character of Paul Kersey more and more of a typical action hero? Not exactly.

James Wan took us into The Further when he directed the first two Insidious films a decade ago, now he’s set to take us… nowhere. Deadline reports that Wan’s production company Atomic Monster is behind an NBC series called Nowhere, which comes from Siberia and Emerald City creator Matthew Arnold. Arnold serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner on the show, which is currently in development.
In addition to Atomic Monster, Vertigo Entertainment, Room 101, and Antihero Entertainment also have a hand in the development of Nowhere. Wan will be executive producing with Rob Hackett and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, while Natalie Viscuso and Roy Lee executive produce for Vertigo, Steve Schneider executive produces for Room 101, and Aengus McLoone does the same for Antihero Entertainment. Over-the-top action sequences. Bone-crunching fights between titans of the action genre. A popular horror director getting his chance to make a massive-budget blockbuster. Fast & Furious 7 (watch it Here) brings all of those elements to the table. But it’s primarily remembered for being a production that was disrupted by tragedy. And we’re going to look into how it all played out in this episode of Revisited.
Universal Pictures doesn’t have a lot of major blockbuster franchises. In 2012, Jurassic Park had been dormant for a decade and the Bourne Identity movies had lost Jason Bourne. So they really only had Fast and Furious. It makes sense that while they were sending the sixth movie out into the world,...

James Wan is currently doing the press rounds for his latest film, the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (you can read our interview with him on the Aquaman 2 subject Here), but during a conversation with the folks at Collider he indicated that he may be returning to horror for his next project.
Of course, Wan got into the entertainment industry with horror, directing the franchise starter Saw as his first feature. Since then, he has directed several more horror films and started a couple more franchises in the process: Dead Silence, Insidious, The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring 2, and Malignant. He also branched out into revenge thriller territory with Death Sentence and directed the blockbusters Furious 7 and Aquaman.
Asked what’s next for him, Wan said, “You know, I have a tendency to want to go back and forth. So, whenever I make a smaller film,...

Not many directors are responsible for a single massive horror franchise. James Wan has three under his belt. Since his 2004 feature debut “Saw,” the Australian filmmaker and founder of the Atomic Monster production company has had a hand in creating some of the most influential horror movies of the 21st century. He’s shown no signs of stopping anytime soon.
Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia since age 7, Wan graduated with a degree in Media from Rmit University in 1999. In 2004, he headed to Hollywood with his friend Leigh Whannell, directing Whannell’s nasty script about a killer who uses deadly games to torment those he deems necessary to punish. Released by Lionsgate, the first “Saw” movie was a ridiculously profitable success, grossing over $103 million on a $1 million budget. It spawned a franchise with a truly intense, labyrinthine mythology and a dedicated fanbase. Although he’s never directed or written a followup,...

Tabletop fans looking for a relatively quick game that’s light on rules but heavy on the gore have an answer with Death Sentence. Created by Guilherme Sassaki, Leo Andrade and Luana Bibiano, Death Sentence is available now via itch.io, and is described as a narrative-focused horror RPG for one-shot sessions in the vein of the best slasher movies, integrating roleplay and rollplay to realize (and/or subvert!) the genre’s main tropes.
A session of Death Sentence runs around 2-5 hours, following a 3-act structure. The game is designed for 1 Narrator and 3 to 5 players, with the Narrator in charge of the world, nonplayer characters (NPCs), and the Threat. Each player controls 2 to 3 Player Characters, whose death is almost certain. However, given that you have a surplus of them allows you to take risks for bolder, more interesting moves.

The Rookie Season 5 understandably spent a significant amount of time exploring the early days of Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen's romance. After all, Chenford had been seasons in the making. But while detailing why it's best for Tim and Lucy to take things slow, The Rookie lost sight of Tim's other great dynamic: the friendship he has with Angela Lopez. Angela and Tim's friendship has existed from Season 1, and now that it has established and fortified Chenford as a couple, The Rookie Season 6 would benefit from diving back into Angela and Tim's friendship.
Not only would doing so make room for a deeper understanding of the characters, it would open the ABC series up to stories beyond romantic drama and workplace happenings. Season 5, Episode 22, "Under Siege," was a somber and emotional Rookie finale. Even as Angela and Wesley Evers welcomed their second child, it remained to be seen whether or not Aaron Thorsen survived.

Onetime Asutralian college students and longtime friends, James Wan and Leigh Whannell began their careers as filmmakers with a proof-of-concept short that — once fully financed — turned into Saw, a cleverly-plotted, attention-grabbing, gore-soaked horror film that spawned eight sequels in as many years. With commercial success came creative freedom. For Wan and Whannell that meant several additional collaborations, including the criminally underseen and underappreciated Dead Silence; Death Sentence, a brutally nihilistic riff on Death Wish; and another franchise/series starter, Insidious, an ingeniously conceived and executed supernatural thriller. Wan went on to kickstart another supernatural franchise with The Conjuring (a virtual cinematic universe at this point), graduated to $100M+ budgets with the Fast & the Furious series, and directed arguably the most artistic and commercially...

After two installments that served as prequels to the Patrick Wilson/Rose Bryne haunted house chillers, “Insidious: The Red Door” takes the underdog horror franchise back to the present.
It’s been 10 years (in real-time and movie time) since the events of “Insidious: Chapter Two,” and the college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must help his father (Patrick Wilson) return to the “Further” to put an end to their supernatural perils once and for all.
Wilson makes his directorial debut with the horror feature. It’s the first of the franchise since “Insidious: The Final Key” earned $67 million domestically and $167 million worldwide on a $10 million budget in 2018. Scott Teems wrote the script based on a story by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

After firmly establishing themselves as filmmakers to watch with the expected success of Saw in 2004, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunited for Dead Silence. It would be the first of two Wan films to underperform in 2007, followed by Death Sentence. While he would go on to prove himself as a true master of horror, even a “lesser” Wan effort has plenty of merit.
Hints of his future brilliance are all over Dead Silence, with a rich, neo-gothic atmosphere, well-executed horror set pieces, inventive visual storytelling, and a bonkers twist. In many ways, Dead Silence feels like a transitional point between Saw‘s grit and the expertly crafted scares of Insidious and The Conjuring, although its overall tone is perhaps closest to Malignant.

In “Vendetta,” a former U.S. Marine strikes back at the thugs who murdered his daughter, inciting a routine cycle of violence with occasional flashes of wit that feel like they were spliced in from a different, better movie. Most of those moments have little to do with the main narrative, which follows William Duncan as he tracks down the hooligans who executed his teenage daughter (Maddie Nichols) during an initiation rite.
His revenge angers Donnie Fetter (Bruce Willis), a street-level crime boss who orders his loose-cannon son Rory (Theo Rossi) to do away with William and his wife (Jackie Moore). Despite the warnings by a handwringing but ineffectual detective (Kurt Yue), who tells William violence can only beget more violence, the situation spirals out of control, as it always does in revenge thrillers of this kind. The body count starts to mount. So do the implausibilities, along with the boredom.

That's a wrap on "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." James Wan's highly-anticipated sequel to "Aquaman," which began shooting in London over the summer, is now entering post-production. The 2018 DC comics-based superhero film came in the wake of "Justice League" and earned high praise for its dynamic camerawork and dizzying action sequences (imagine watching a superhero movie and being able to tell who is hitting whom!). The film spawned a silly-but-underseen three-part animated series on HBO Max (also produced by Wan), "Aquaman: King of Atlantis," and the sequel that just finished shooting.

Off The Rails, which premiered in theaters Friday, stars Jenny Seagrove, Sally Phillips, Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips, Ben Miller, Franco Nero and Judi Dench. HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.
Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Besides that, there’s a bunch of animated DC pics dropping the same day, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and All-Star Superman. 2005’s Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, also debuts on the service from the 1st.

Exclusive: Reel World Management, an La-based production, financing, and distribution company that specializes in partnering with branded authors, is doing a feature adaptation of Testament, based on the 1975 novel by New York Times bestselling author David Morrell, who created the character of Rambo in his debut novel, First Blood.
Reel World execs Roma Roth and Christopher E. Perry have hired Ian Jeffers to pen the screenplay. Jeffers wrote the novella and co-wrote the screen adaptation of The Grey starring Liam Neeson and produced by Ridley Scott. His other credits include Death Sentence starring Kevin Bacon.
Testament is a survival thriller that follows an ordinary family that must face extraordinary circumstances after being forced to flee into a wilderness as extreme and unrelenting as the people hunting them. This is the first feature project for Reel World.

One of the biggest franchises to hit horror since Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street has been James Wan's The Conjuring Universe. And today we have word via franchise producer Peter Safran that he doesn't think Wan will ever return behind the camera to direct another film set within the cinematic horror series. Specifically, Safran says this about James Wan.
"I don't think he will [direct another Conjuring movie]. That's just me. My instinct is that he won't. I think he left everything out on the field with The Conjuring 2. Just being by his side as he made that movie, I feel that he put everything that he'd learned up to that point into that film, from character development to scares to crafting sequences, just everything. I love the movie, and I think that he felt like he did it, he really showed people exactly what he wanted to show them.

With the exception of 2015’s Fast & Furious 7 and 2007’s Death Sentence, the feature film output of director James Wan is horror movies across the board, making the new Aquaman a bit of a departure for the prominent genre filmmaker. Nonetheless, Wan’s upcoming journey to Atlantis may not be quite as radically removed from the Insidious helmsman’s usual work as you might suspect, with the director recently claiming that he pitched the project to DC as a “horror monster movie.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Wan recalled how Warner Bros. gave him two options for superheroes he could adapt for the big screen – The Flash and Aquaman – and explained how it was the strange world inhabited by Arthur Curry that made him choose the latter:
“I realized, wow, his character resides in this crazy, big world, and I could do something very interesting with it. I...

Director James Wan is a hero of genre movies. Hell, it would be hard to argue Wan is anything less than the current king of horror. But even though Wan is perhaps best known for his horror movies such as Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring, and The Conjuring 2, the man has also displayed a deft hand at the action genre as well with classics such as Death Sentence starring Kevin Bacon and the seventh entry in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, Furious 7. And all of that comes to a head this Christmas as Wan officially hits the mega-big time with his upcoming adaptation of DC's Aquaman.
But for all his skills at directing action sequences, just how the hell did someone as horror-centric as James Wan snag the job of helming this family-friendly epic underwater super-hero adventure? Well, as it turns out,...

A new clip from DC’s Aquaman has been released and it might be one of the most impressive that we’ve seen yet!
The clip features and action-packed fight sequence involving Nicole Kidman‘s Queen Atlanna being attacked by an Atlantean military force. The coolest thing about this scene is that it was shot in one take! As you’ll see the outcome is pretty damn awesome.
I haven’t seen the movie myself yet, but like you, I’ve been hearing so much great stuff about it! It sounds like this DC movie will actually live up to the hype! I certainly love the action that I’m seeing here in this clip of Kidman kicking some major ass!
Director James Wan also talked about this scene in an interview with /Film, and I included that for you below the clip to read if you want:

I've been fascinated with Alcatraz ever since I was a kid. There's just something fascinating and haunting about that place and every time I'm in San Fransisco, I have to go! There are also some great movies with Alcatraz and the main setting. Two of my favorites are Clint Eastwood's Escape From Alcatraz and Michael Bay's The Rock.
Well, we've got a new movie coming set in Alcatraz. It's called Alcatraz and according to Collider, it's being developed by the producers of John Wick and 300. James Foley has also been attached to direct it. Foley is the director of the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels, so that doesn't spark much confidence. But prior to that, he did direct Glengarry Glen Ross and Fear.
The script was written by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers (The Grey, Death Sentence) and the story is said to be based on the true story of Frank Morris,...

Director James Wan made a name for himself with the horror genre, making the genuinely frightening The Conjuring films, Insidious, Saw, Dead Silence and the criminally underrated Death Sentence. However, he changed gears a bit (natch) with Furious 7, proving that he could thrill audiences as much as he could scare the shit out of them. From there, it seemed he could write his own ticket and with a burgeoning... Read More...

There aren't many constants nowadays, but Netflix is sure trying hard. And with its assortment of action movies, it can't be denied that there is something here for every action aficionado. The trick is finding the gems amid a morass of never-ending (and we mean never-ending) content. That is precisely what this list is for. Not all action movies are made equally. What one person considers an action movie, another person might consider a war movie, and still another might consider it a thriller. You see what I'm saying?
The films on this list are action movies. Sure, they might stray into thriller, drama, sci-fi and other categories, but at their core they are all about explosions, bullets and pithy dialogue. You know, all the things we want when we watch an action movie. And what would a list like this be without such names as Stallone, Gibson, Diesel, Smith,...

While October usually signals the arrival of all sorts of spooky, creepy, scary, and otherwise appropriately Halloween-themed films to both theaters and streaming services, this month’s batch of new titles on Netflix offers up a delightfully wide variety of choices that aren’t all tied to the year’s primary celebration of fear. Sure, those titles are there — from more mainstream chillers like “Cult of Chucky” and the new original “The Babysitter,” to more offbeat picks like the cannibal coming-of-age tale “Raw” and the seminal “Donnie Darko” — but this month’s incoming list has more than enough for movie fans who don’t want to shriek at their televisions.

On the last In Defense Of entry, I turned the clock back to 2007 to take a look at the second of two films to come out that year from director James Wan, his vengeance-fuelled action drama Death Sentence. Putting aside his work on 2015’s Furious 7 and the upcoming Aquaman, Wan’s name has been synonymous with modern horror thanks to kicking off not one but three horror franchises in Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, and though Death Sentence was an attempt to try his hand at something different early in his career, 2007 also marked the year horror fans were given the chance to see what he could follow up the original Saw with in the form of Dead Silence.
As I discussed in my breakdown of Death Sentence, 2007 has essentially become the year we don’t speak of when discussing Wan’s career; thanks to the string of successes he’s had ever since,...

Ever since directing the original Saw back in 2004, James Wan’s career has only continued to skyrocket. Say what you will about the franchise that his debut spawned, but the original film – in all its low budget simplicity – was the work of someone with potential and, better yet, the talent to see that potential through. In the years since, his name has become synonymous with modern horror, spinning two further franchises into gold with Insidious and The Conjuring, and while he’s also helped guide Furious 7 through its troubled production and is helming next year’s Aquaman, fans of Wan will always look forward to seeing him return to his horror roots.
But while the director has seen success after success over the years, there’s one year in particular that always seems to get overlooked: 2007. It was then that Wan...

What sort of movie will Aquaman prove to be? The individual elements sound intriguing. Jason Momoa proved his action credentials on TV's Game of Thrones as well as the new version of Conan the Barbarian, so he sounds like a splendid selection to be Aquaman. Amber Heard has appeared in a variety of comic and dramatic roles over her career and is a great choice as Mera, Queen of Atlantis, while the wonderfully versatile Willem Dafoe will undoubtedly bring some of his trademark edge to Vulko, an advisor to Aquaman. But what does director James Wan have in mind? Wan, of course, is best known as the director of horror movies like Insidious and The Conjuring 2. Yet he also made the terrific crime thriller Death Sentence as well as the blockbuster action sequel Furious 7. When...

John McNaughton’s “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer,” about the nomadic killer Henry and his murderous exploits, based on the real-life serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, made its world premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1986. It then traveled the festival circuit throughout the late 80s, including Telluride and Boston, where it garnered acclaim and controversy from critics, distributors, and the public for its graphic violence and nihilistic tone. Finally, in 1990, Greycat Films picked it up for limited release and it entered theaters unrated, as opposed to the Mppa’s X rating, which was usually saved only for pornographic films. Now for its 30th anniversary, Dark Sky Films will release a 4K restoration of the film that will open in theaters nationwide. Watch an exclusive clip from the restored film below.

I’m fairly certain I’d watch Stellan Skarsgård do anything. Train a puppy to roll over? Sounds amazing. Delicately cook a perfect Frittata? I’ll be in the front row. But Skarsgård is at his absolute best when brutal violence is involved, only because of his endearingly maniacal appreciation of a good genre role. Only a few months ago he was able to play a boisterous European mobster in Our Kind of Traitor, and luckily, Hans Petter Moland’s In Order Of Disappearance gives us another Skarsgård role to love with almost no wait in between. A less cartoonish, grief-driven turn this time around for Skarsgård, but more killer Skarsgårdian goodness nonetheless. I thought August was supposed to be filled with crap? Yet here’s another positive review coming out of what might be a record-breaking high for typical late-summer garbage.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr., better known as the “Grim Sleeper,” has been sentenced to death. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy announced the decision on Wednesday, August 10.
In May, a jury convicted Franklin of 10 counts of murder: nine women and one teenage girl between 1985 and 2007. During the trial, prosecutors also connected him to several other murders, with detectives believing he may have been responsible for the deaths of at least 25 women.
“This is not a sentence of vengeance,” said the judge, who denied the defense’s motion for a new trial, as the Los Angeles Times notes. “It’s justice.”
Franklin, 63, was also convicted of attempted murder in connection with an attack on Enietra Washington, who survived and went on to testifying against him, calling Franklin a “piece of evil.” “You’re Satan representative,” she said. “You’re right up there with Manson.”
