1964's "The Pink Panther" is not a complex film. There is little to suggest a full-fledged film series in its story of a jewel with the shape of a panther buried deep within. Somehow, that premise resulted in a series of films lasting decades, with eleven unique (or mostly unique) live-action entries. And the cartoon character who showed up in the title sequence, dancing to Henry Mancini's iconic theme music? There was a Saturday morning series starring him that ran in various incarnations from 1969 to 1980.
When writer Maurice Richlin pursued director Blake Edwards with an idea for a film about a jewel thief, neither man could have predicted the surprising longevity of that idea. Certainly, they couldn't have predicted that the extremely thin premise of "The Pink Panther" would result in a series of films running into the 1990s. Nor could they have predicted that the protagonist would be...

Prolific Japanese director Sion Sono, known for such films as Love Exposure and Antiporno, as well as the recent Nicolas Cage-starrer Prisoners Of The Ghostland, has reportedly been accused of sexual harassment by several actresses in Japan.
The accusations came to light in a post on local site Shukan Josei Prime with actresses anonymously alleging impropriety. According to Deadline’s sister publication, Variety, the alleged predatory behavior has been linked to Sono’s acting workshops and an upcoming workshop has been cancelled.
Actor Yuki Matsuzaki, who has appeared in such films as Letters From Iwo Jima and The Pink Panther 2, has been tweeting about the allegations:
Now that Sion Sono is outed as a sexual predator who preys on young actresses luring them with roles in his films, I wonder if Any of the major Japanese film studios and TV networks would condemn such predatory practices? How about Japan Academy Awards?...

TV had the run of the place for awhile there during the pandemic. But now that vaccinations are speeding up and the weather is warming, it’s film’s time to shine. At least that’s the conclusion that can be drawn from HBO Max’s list of new releases for June 2021.
There are no real original TV series of note coming this month, which is highly unusual for HBO and HBO Max. In their place, however, are some really impressive film offerings. Major Warner Bros. titles like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (June 4) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights (June 11) both arrive this month. So too do some interesting documentaries like Revolutionary Rent on June 15 and Lfg on June 24. The former deals with the staging of the musical Rent in Cuba and the latter follows the U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay.

Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.
Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.
Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

Long before Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber were Oscar-nominated screenwriters, they received a package from James Franco and Seth Rogen that left them confused. The actors, whom they’d never met, sent them a memoir by Greg Sestero: “The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside ‘The Room,’ the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made.”

Chicago – The screenwriting team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have had many adventures plying their trade, ever since their breakthrough “500 Days of Summer” in 2009. Their latest assignment was adapting “The Disaster Artist” for director and lead actor James Franco.
The Disaster Artist is a funny and intuitive profile of Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, produced and directed one of the most infamous cult films of the post millennium, “The Room.” Screenplay specialists Neustadter and Weber adapted the book of “The Disaster Artist,” written by Tom Bissell and Greg Sestero. Greg was an actor in “The Room,” and is portrayed in film by James Franco’s brother Dave. The key for the screenwriters was finding the heart of Tommy Wiseau and Greg’s relationship, on the way to creating his cult masterwork.

The key for the screenwriters was finding the heart of Tommy Wiseau and Greg’s relationship, on the way to creating his cult masterwork.
Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber broke through in 2009 with “500 Days of Summer,” based on an actual relationship...

Hailey Baldwin has turned quite a few heads in recent years. The 20-year-old and daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin has gone from a cute celebrity kid to a stunning runway model and member of a growing entourage of hot young stars. She wasn't even in kindergarten yet when her dad started taking her to family fun nights at movie premieres. As a child, she has walked the red carpets at screenings for films such as The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Shrek 3 and The Pink Panther 2. When she was about 13, she accompanied her dad to the 2010 ESPYs. A year later, they attended the premiere of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. She and Justin Bieber became good friends and would...

'The Pink Panther' with Peter Sellers: Blake Edwards' 1963 comedy hit and its many sequels revolve around one of the most iconic film characters of the 20th century: clueless, thick-accented Inspector Clouseau – in some quarters surely deemed politically incorrect, or 'insensitive,' despite the lack of brown face make-up à la Sellers' clueless Indian guest in Edwards' 'The Party.' 'The Pink Panther' movies [1] There were a total of eight big-screen Pink Panther movies co-written and directed by Blake Edwards, most of them starring Peter Sellers – even after his death in 1980. Edwards was also one of the producers of every (direct) Pink Panther sequel, from A Shot in the Dark to Curse of the Pink Panther. Despite its iconic lead character, the last three movies in the Pink Panther franchise were box office bombs. Two of these, The Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, were co-written by Edwards' son,...

Back in April, The New Mutants director and co-writer Josh Boone revealed that he had turned in a second draft of the script that he had written with Knate Lee. It was later confirmed that the movie would be set in the 1990s, likely following the precedent set by the X-Men prequel trilogy that concluded this summer with the 1980s-set X-Men: Apocalypse. Today we have word that the project has brought on the writing team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news, which reunites the writers with director Josh Boone, who they worked with on the 2014 young adult hit movie The Fault In Our Stars. The new writers coming aboard actually makes perfect sense, since producer Simon Kinberg revealed in May that New Mutants has "more of a Ya vibe to it." In order to have a successful Christmas you need to make the right choices. The presents should be personal and heart-felt, the food should be fresh and well-cooked, and who you spend your time with should be the ones you love the most.
If that’s not your in-laws, parents, cousins or even siblings, Netflix has got you covered. To help you decide which TV shows and films are worthy of your attention over the holidays, here are six of the best, featuring some of the most popular characters around.
This week, settle in for adventures from detectives both tiny and idiotic, the show critics are calling the next Family Guy, an award-winning drama on race in America and the latest box office blockbuster in the Jack Ryan series.
There’s even an animated Christmas movie, if you’re not sick of that kind of thing yet.

For some reason, Hollywood fell in love with British actors again in the 1990s. After spectacularly failing to launch a franchise with Screen Gems’ awful The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, director Harald Zwart is scaling down for his next film, having signed on to direct a microbudgeted horror flick for Blumhouse Productions.
Details about the pic are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but one intriguing aspect of the project, scripted by Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle), is that it’s being aimed at families, not typically a target audience for horror films.
Still, if any studio can pull off a family-friendly horror movie, it’s Blumhouse, which has taken the genre by storm in the past few years with titles like Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious.
Though Zwart’s credibility as a director was somewhat tarnished by City of Bones‘ abject failure at the box office and with critics, he pulled off a huge hit in 2010 with The Karate Kid, and...

Genre filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network announced today that Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider Man 2) has been cast as Andres Galan in the network's upcoming scripted original set to premiere July 2014. Previously announced cast members include Gabriel Luna, Nicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.
Created by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced in association with K/O Paper Products, the coveted writing/producing team behind Sleepy Hollow, Fringe , Star Trek and the Transformer franchise, Matador will feature Molina as Andrew Galan, a man who built his fortune in the telecom industry, but his true passion is soccer. As owner of the ascendant La Riot franchise, he is celebrated in both the sports and business worlds. But there is another world that he operates in -- as a member of an elite group of powerful global players, ruthless individuals who can effect world events on a scale that one would never imagine. What Galan doesn't know is that there is a mole in his midst. One of his new players, Tony Bravo, is actually an undercover operative, sent in to expose him and his cohorts. As Tony and Galan grow closer, the fate of their relationship may very well determine the fate of the world.
Irreverent and action-packed, Matador chronicles the unlikely rise of Antonio "Matador" Bravo, a popular soccer star, who comes to be known as much for his playboy antics off the field as his dynamic moves on it. But what his fans and family don't realize is that it's all a cover--in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for a little known branch of the CIA. “Matador” has the kind of fame and notoriety that affords him access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy. But, in balancing the dueling roles in which he's been cast, he will be forced to confront the question of his true identity...and it is this mission which will prove to be his most dangerous.
Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network's chairman and founder, is set to direct the first episode which will be penned by showrunners, co-creators and executive producers Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin

Last fall, the forthcoming new adaptation of Masters of the Universe lost director Jon M. Chu but picked up writer Terry Rossio (one half of the duo responsible for writing the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) for a new take on the script. Now Sony Pictures and Escape Artists are on the look for a new director, and they have an interesting shortlist. The Wrap says Mike Cahill (Another Earth), Chris McKay (editor and animation supervisor of The Lego Movie) and Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid) are up for the job. In addition, Justin Kroll from Variety says Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is also in the mix. More below! Zwart is the one who has the best relationship with Sony after directing their reboot of The Karate Kid and The Pink Panther 2, but Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is the project that is close to the style of Masters of the Universe,...

Critically derided they may be, but there's a lot to love in Steve Martin's two Pink Panther movies, Patrick writes...
To start with, it is probably worth noting that I rate The Pink Panther 2 over the preceding yarn. Unfortunately few agree - the sequel to the not-much-of-a-hit 2006 Steve Martin comedy is gauged even lower than the first on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus being that in “underutilizing its talented cast, The Pink Panther 2 is little more than a series of lame slapstick gags.”
I, however, beg to differ, both episodes of the rebooted Pink Panther twosome are serviceable and convivial salutes to Peter Sellers’ original movies. Steve Martin takes the plum role of Inspector Clouseau, the clodhopping gendarme whose entire career seemingly pivots around the recovery of the precious Pink Panther diamond. Martin has perfect comic timing, conveying the good inspector’s heavy-handed,...

Are the directors of Kick-Ass 2, The Lincoln Lawyer and The Karate Kid being lined up for Fast & Furious 7?
It proved to be something of a surprise last week, when it was revealed that director Justin Lin was walking away from directing Fast & Furious 7, having directed the last four entries in the franchise (including next month's Fast & Furious 6).
Lin's departure was reportedly down to the fact that Universal wants the next Fast & Furious sequel ready for summer 2014, and he apparently feared he couldn't turn around the kind of film that he'd be happy with in that timescale. Hence, he moved on.
Universal isn't hanging about though, and seems keen to make sure it has Fast & Furious 7 alongside Jurassic Park 4 for its summer 2014 blockbusters. And Latino Review is reporting that a trio of directors are now in contention for the Fast & Furious 7 job.

Jeff Wadlow ("Kick-Ass 2," "Never Back Down") is reportedly at the top of the list to take over the helm of the upcoming seventh "Fast and Furious" feature at Universal Pictures.
Justin Lin, who directed the previous four installments, opted out of the next one this week due to the film's compressed production schedule which sees it being readied for a release next Summer.
As a result, Universal has been on the hunt for replacements and have reportedly managed to cut the list down to three potentials, with Wadlow at the top.
Next on the list is Brad Furman ("The Lincoln Lawyer," "Runner, Runner"), and at the bottom is Harald Zwart ("The Karate Kid," "The Pink Panther 2"). Universal is expected to make an announcement early next week.

Justin Lin, who has been with The Fast and the Furious franchise since the third installment The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, leading up to this summer's Fast & Furious 6, has had to drop out of directing Fast & Furious 7. The reason is because the movie is moving too fast towards production, and the director would have to start preproduction work while he's still working to get Fast & Furious 6 ready for its May 2013 release date.
Universal Pictures has had to find a new director fast, and according to Latino Review, they have the hunt narrowed down to three guys who seem custom built for the job.
At the top of the list is Jeff Wadlow, who directed this summer's uber-violent superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2. He also directed 2009's Never Back Down, which falls perfectly in line with The Fast and the Furious. And he would be working for the same studio as those two projects.

Writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Webber have certainly kept busy since the release of their first produced project, the indie hit (500) Days of Summer. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd will topline Admission about the life of a Princeton admissions counselor. The admissions counselor (Fey) decides she needs to shake up her boring life and two things happen: one is when she meets an attractive potential student who is not really Princeton material (Nat Wolff of "The Naked Brothers Band") and another is when she starts crushing on a former classmate and teacher at an alternative high school (Rudd). One big problem is that she already has a boyfriend Michael Sheen (The Twilight Saga movies). Gloria Reuben ("ER") plays another admissions counselor trying to get Fey's job. Lily Tomlin (The Pink Panther 2, "The Magic School Bus") and Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride, Toy Story movies) also costar in the comedy. Looks like Lily Collins will continue her forays into fantasy film: The Mirror Mirror actress will star in the highly-anticipated big-screen adaptation of The Mortal Instruments, based on Cassandra Clare’s best-selling Ya series. Collins will play Clary Fray, a New York teenager who joins forces with the demon-fighting Shadowhunters. Also tapped for the film is Norwegian director Harald Zwart, whose past credits include the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid and The Pink Panther 2.
“Lily Collins is the perfect Clary,” said producer Robert Kulzer in a statement. “Harald Zwart really understands the visuals and heart of The Mortal Instruments.

Director Harold Zwart (The Karate Kid remake) has boarded Mortal Instruments starring Lily Collins. The film is an adaptation of Cassandra Clare's young adult novel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Collins will play Clary Fray, "a young woman who discovers she is the descendant of a line of secret cadre of half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons." Zwart previously directed the cringe-worthy family fare Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2, but I rather enjoyed his remake of The Karate Kid. He's certainly a step up from the previous director Scott Stewart (Priest) who left to work on a TV series based on his film Legion. According to THR, filming on Mortal Instruments is set to begin on August 15th in Toronto. Hit the jump for the official synopsis. Here's the official synopsis for Mortal Instruments: Clary Fray (Lily Collins...
