Produced by Nelson’s longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon, The Border features 10 new tracks, including four co-written by Nelson with Cannon. The 90-minute film from Canada’s White Pine Pictures investigates the global addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics to human health. The film is an official selection of the SXSW Festival 2024 Documentary Spotlight.

Rainmaker has bagged worldwide sales rights. Two of its key execs, Greg Phillips and Vicky Ryan, have worked with White Pine execs for almost 20 years. Amazon and Netflix are locked in a heavyweight tussle for rights to make the movie Crime 101 in a deal that could cost either party $100 million.

According to Deadline, Crime 101, a package based on a novella by New York Times Best-selling author Don Winslow (The Border), has Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) set to star in the movie. Ukraine doesn’t need mercy, pity or condolences, noted Film.UA Group CEO Victoria Yarmoshchuk at MipTV on Monday. What it needs are new projects, international co-operations and jobs for people in the creative sector.

“On the first day of war, we realized that content is our weapon. Ukrainian stories are not local stories; they can be understood everywhere. The best thing the world can do right now is to collaborate with us,” she said.

Character actress Alberta Watson passed away on Saturday due to cancer, her agent has reported. Watson was 60.

Watson began her acting career in Canada with national broadcaster CBC, gaining notice for a key role in the 1978 feature In Praise of Older Women. Watson went on to a variety of roles in movies such as 1981’s Black Mirror and 1983’s The Keep, as well as guest stints on shows such as Kane & Abel.

Watson got her first major television role in Buck James, following that up with guest appearances on shows such as The Equalizer and Street Legal. As the 90s came around, she became a more prominent fixture in television, appearing on shows such as Law & Order and The Outer Limits. Watson also appeared in David O. Four friends decide to break into the city morgue and record themselves holding a séance after Joey (Campo) accuses the other of being a fake psychic medium. When the group summons a demon by mistake, Joey breaks the circle of protection and causes himself to be vulnerable. Once possessed they will have to find a way to drive the demon out of their friend before it destroys them all.

Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

CBC, a Canadian TV network, surely didn't renew the TV series The Border for a fourth season last year. However, the TV series' first season will premiere in the USA on Ion Television, an American cable network.

The show will premiere on July 8 with two back-to-back episodes starting at 10 Pm.

In this TV series, we follow a squad of the fictitious Immigration Customs Security (Ics), a Canadian federal agency responsible of the security on the border between Canada and the USA. Major Mike Kessler (James McGowan) heads his team and does his best to maintain a clear-eyed decency while responding to the call of duty. He often clashes with agent Bianca Lagarda (Sofia Milos), an agent sent by the American government to work with the Ics.

The show also stars Graham Abbey, Nazneen Contractor, Jonas Chernick, Mark Wilson, Jim Cordington, Catherine Disher, Sarah Gadon and Nigel Bennett.

In this procedural drama, we follow Jessica King (Amy Price-Francis), a detective from the Toronto Police Department (Tpd). When Sgt. Derek Spears (Alan Van Sprang) has a televised meltdown, the Tpd's Major Crimes Task Force designates her as its new lead investigator. King accepts the challenge even though she survived 8 years in the Homicide section, two marriages and multiple stab wounds.

This eight-part series also stars Gabriel Hogan (The Kennedys), as Danny Sless, Jessica’s third husband and fellow police officer; Tony Nardi (Cra$h & Burn), as Police Chief Peter Graci; Suzanne Coy (Dan for Mayor), as Eleni Demaris, King's trusted subordinate; Zoe Doyle (The Border), as Det. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Note bene: Those fools over at the JoBlo Movie Show Podcast decided it would be a good idea if I hung out for the night to talk about movies.

Yesterday, the winners at the 25th Gemini Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy Awards, were revealed as Corey Monteith (Glee) was hosting that night. Moreover, Degrassi Junior High/Degrassi: The Next Generation was crowned by the public as the best Canadian TV series of the last 25 years.

There was a time when Hawaii Five-o dominated prime time TV. That was over 30 years ago. Now, there exists several new generations of TV viewers who have never heard of Det. Steve McGarrett, Danny or Chin-Ho. Hawaii Five-0 isn’t a reboot in the loosest sense; it’s a prequel. However, it’s a series that will still need to break the shackles of reboot-remake-itis. CBS knew this in casting the series. They plucked Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) to be Det. Chin Ho Kelly, while his Lost-fame was still fresh. Less than two years after Battlestar Galactica concluded, Grace Park (The Border) returns with the ongoing role of Kona Kalakaua, Chin-Ho’s cousin and bikini-wearing bombshell with a lethal cross punch. Scott Caan, who typically plays the guy you love to hate in TV shows like Entourage and movies like Ocean’s Eleven, finally gets to show his warm-cuddly side as single father Det.

Today, the nominations for Canada's 2010 Directors Guild Awards have been announced. The Canadian distributor Vsc has sent a hi-res picture of the DVD artwork of The Border's third season. This Canadian espionnage series - which was aired on the public TV network CBC - will come out on DVD on August 10.

Despite the good reviews the shot has gotten, CBC didn't renew The Border for a fourth season.

The show tells the story of the fictional Immigration and Custom Security (Ics). The group is led by Maj. Mike Kessler, a former soldier of the Joint Task Force 2 (Canada's elite army). While Det. Sgt. Layla Hourani (Nazneen Contractor) died in the second season's finale, she'll be replaced by Khalida Massi (Athena Karkanis), a polyglot agent. Other than that, the Ics is under investigation by the Canadian Public Security ministry because of the screw-up that occured during a border operation at the end of season two.
