Ti West began his career as an independent filmmaker in the early 2000s, slowly climbing the industry ranks to become more mainstream. Although firmly steeped in the low-budget horror genre early in his career, West has graduated to bigger-budget commercial projects, including cable TV shows The Exorcist, The Resident, and most recently, the X trilogy. While steeped in the horror genre, the most off-brand movie West has made thus far in his career is the 2016 western In A Valley of Violence, starring Ethan Hawke and John Travolta.
Although In A Valley of Violence is inspired by several movie westerns, in 2014, West professed his undying admiration for a little-known western called The Homesman, directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. To trace the dramatic roots of In a Valley of Violence, it's worth exploring what drew West to The Homesman, why he feels it's such a great must-see movie, and perhaps most importantly,...

The very same faith that can drive humanity to build majestic works of art and band together to help those in need is also responsible for some of the most horrific events in our species’ history. This is something that genre filmmaker Ti West seems to understand very well, with many of his projects at least hinting at the darker side of faith.
From the Satanic-Panic-inspired murders of House of the Devil to the bible belt influences behind the X trilogy, it seems like West has been building up to the religious twist in the recently released MaXXXine for years now. However, there’s one underrated entry in the director’s filmography that I think epitomizes his obsession with faith-based horror while also setting the groundwork for much of his future work.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: Justin Timberlake's No Angels, directed by Ti West. Ti West is obsessed with several themes, among them hedonism and the hive-mind of cults. In films as diverse as House of the Devil, The Roost and especially The Sacrament he has explored the nature of cultish behavior. From devil-worshippers (in a Satanic Panic send-up) in House of the Devil, to a Jonestown situation in The Sacrament. According to those who have seen it, MaXXXine, the final chapter in his X-trilogy, also returns to this well. Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

Eli Roth made his return to rated “R” horror with the slasher movie Thanksgiving last month, and we learned last week that Roth will return to direct Thanksgiving 2 in 2025.
This year’s holiday slasher is of course a feature length expansion of Roth’s popular faux trailer from Grindhouse (2007), and it seems it’s reignited his passion for his past work.
Speaking with CinePop for a new interview that ran this week (watch the video below), Eli Roth reveals that he’s hungry to return to the worlds of both Hostel and Cabin Fever!
“Hostel there’s a lot more to do. I’d love to go back to Hostel at some point. And Cabin Fever as well,” Roth tells the outlet. “They’re a part of me. They’re like my children.”

Eli Roth just kicked off a new horror franchise with his slasher movie Thanksgiving (read our review Here), as it was recently announced that Thanksgiving 2 is on track for a 2025 release. But while Roth is currently focused on holiday slashing, two franchises he previously created – the Hostel and Cabin Fever franchises – came up while he was sitting down for an interview with CinePOP. And during this interview, he said he hopes to revisit and revive those franchises someday!
Roth told CinePOP, “Hostel, there’s a lot more to do. I’d love to go back to Hostel at some point. And Cabin Fever as well. They’re a part of me, like my children, and I feel like I’ve been ignoring them for too long. I’d love to go back to them, in some way. I have ideas.“

Ti West has been churning out grisly indie horror films for almost two decades, starting with “The Roost” before his breakout satanic panic thriller “The House of the Devil” in 2009. But his recent collaboration with A24 on porn-set slasher “X,” campy gothic follow-up “Pearl,” and trilogy-ender “MaXXXine” has spawned an entirely singular Ti West Cinematic Universe: a cause for celebration in a Hollywood, where such franchises too often seem to cannibalize each other with spinning-out-of-control mythologies and winking and self-referential fan-baiting.
So it’s interesting that, for the director of movies like “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever” and the Jonestown-inspired mockumentary “The Sacrament,” the great films of horror history annals largely don’t strike him as the best the medium has to offer. At least, that’s according to his ballot for BFI’s 2022 Sight & Sound filmmakers poll of the greatest movies of all time. There’s no “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” or “Halloween” here,...

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Back in 2005, Ti West first appeared on the scene with an odd little horror film called "The Roost" featuring killer bats, the reanimated dead, and Tom Noonan as a horror host. His follow up, the thrilling "Trigger Man," flew by viewers and went mostly underseen, but when West released "The House of the Devil" in 2009, he established himself as one of horror's most exciting new voices. In the years that followed, West put out a slew of horror films, like "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever," "The Innkeepers," "The Sacrament," as well as contributing segments to "V/H/S" and "The ABCs of Death." Bloody. Brutal. Grungier than a big-city back alley and more guts-strewn than a slaughterhouse. This is how you like your slasher-flick horror, and trust is when we say Ti West has your back. Part of a young, hungry generation of horror auteurs weaned on the grindhouse canon, he’s dabbled in a number of dark, dingy subgenres, from quick ‘n’ dirty sequels (Cabin Fever 2) to the slow-burn supernatural (The Innkeepers) to neo-Seventiesploitation (the cult thriller The Sacrament). But go back to his best-in-show entry from 2009, The House of the Devil,...

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

April showers might bring May flowers, but what to do during the rainy season? Why, modern movie-lover does when the weather outside is frightful, curl up with some Netflix. (Maybe get some chill in there, if you’re lucky). While not the most romantic of movies, classic crime lovers can enjoy Brian De Palma’s “Scarface,” which lands on the platform next month. After you get your fix of an infinitely quotable and smoldering Al Pacino, you can jump ahead to the equally as disturbing David Fincher classic, “Seven.”
A few tear-jerking Oscar winners also head to Netflix in April, including the Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger-starring “Cold Mountain,” and Roberto Benigni’s WWII drama “Life Is Beautiful.” For lighter fare, check out “The Iron Giant,” or both live-action “The Flinstones” movies (for my Rosie O’Donnell die-hards).
Hopefully, that’s enough to keep you busy until May. Check out...

IFC Films has acquired the distribution rights for the highly-anticipated Cabin Fever remake, which was directed by Travis Zariwny, a.k.a. Travis Z. IFC will release this horror movie in 2016, although a specific release date was not given at this time. Here's what director Travis Z had to say about his film getting picked up by IFC Films.
"It was a great opportunity to recreate an iconic film for a new generation of horror fans. I am a die hard fan of horror films and the king of horror Eli Roth trusted me to re-imagine his film. I was not going to fail."
We first reported on the Cabin Fever remake back in October 2014, when it was announced that Travis Zariwny will direct from Eli Roth and Randy Pearlstein's original script that was turned into the 2002 movie. The original movie and the remake follow a group of five...

As far as personal histories with a film go, Ti West’s The House of the Devil is one of the more transformative and memorable of mine. I first watched the film one night after hearing some chatter about it on the internet, and to be honest I didn’t really like it too much the first viewing. I found it to be quite boring save for the last 15 minutes that descended into truly nightmarish horror. Months went by, but I still couldn’t stop thinking about that film, so I rewatched it with a friend, and so begin my road to understanding how brilliant it is. A few years later it’s one of my favorite horror films (I even presented a paper on it at a conference), I rewatch it every Halloween.

That Cabin Fever remake is actually happening, but not in the way one might expect. It’s being reported that the film will go into production this week in Portland, Oregon, but there’s no mention of a screenwriter. Why? Because director Travis Zariwny will be working with the exact same script that Eli Roth and Randy Pearlstein co-penned for the 2002 edition. Hit the jump for more on how that will work and to check out the new crop of 20-somethings that will face off against the notorious flesh-eating virus. According to Deadline, this new rendition of Cabin Fever will star Gage Golightly of Teen Wolf, Paranormal Activity 3’s Dustin Ingram, Exists’ Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario of When the Game Stands Tall and Nadine Crocker. Just like the original, they’ll rent a cabin in the woods and come in contact with a wicked virus that eats away at their skin.

There are great dangers in being an actor. The cutthroat competition, the grueling days on set… and the obsessed serial killers. Well, that serial killer thing isn't the norm, but it's front and center in Pieces of Talent.
Now available to stream, as well as on DVD and in old school VHS format, Pieces of Talent was co-written and directed by Joe Stauffer. It stars co-writer David Long. He is joined in the cast by Kristi Ray, Jon Stafford (Full Metal Jacket), Barbara Weetman (Stuck in Love) and Taylor Kowalski (Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever).
The gruesome F/X were done by Tony Rosen, who created the Annabelle doll for The Conjuring and its upcoming spinoff.
An autographed copy of the film can be purchased at the Pieces of Talent webstore, where you can also pick up other cool items like a bloody VHS Death Tape and hand-painted David Long bobbleheads.

Each of the “Cabin Fever” films have thus far been directed by genre filmmakers with a very specific vision. That may seem like a low bar to set until you glimpse the history of horror franchise-building. The first “Cabin Fever” revealed a certain fiendish sense of humor courtesy of horror merrymaker Eli Roth, who thus far keeps making more and more of a failed effort to maintain a straight face. “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever” was a film reportedly compromised in the editing room, but what footage remained reveled in Ti West's more misanthropic worldview. But, and this is not meant to shade him, only the talented Kaare Andrews has actually used the material to make an honest-to-god horror film. The delightfully dumb and spooky “Cabin Fever: Patient Zero” is that movie. The set-up, like the rest of the film, is familiar: the flesh-eating strain from the first films...

I know very little about this film, mostly on purpose. I have heard Piece of Talent being mentioned by several friends, and on various Facebook groups that focus on solid indie horror, so it was already on my radar, but I have no idea what it is all about. A press release went out today, announcing that the film was now available on DVD & VHS through the Pieces of Talent website. I’m always excited to check out new indie horror films, even though the typical indie horror output as of late has been a little bit disappointing. However, there are definitely still a few gems that slip through the cracks, and this is shaping up to be one of them, in my eyes. Check out the press release below, and order your copy today.

*full disclosure: a theatrical screening of this film was provided by Sinister Cinemas and Raven Banner Entertainment. Director: Kaare Andrews. Writer: Jake Wade Wall. Cast: Sean Astin, Currie Graham, Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton and Jillian Murray. Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero was originally developed as a prequel. This film would be the first in the franchise, followed by Eli Roth's Cabin Fever (2002) and Ti West's Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009). Later, the script was reworked and the film is the second sequel in the franchise. And really, this is a standalone film as this title has only the loosest connections with the previous two films. This second sequel uses several standard indie horror features, which will be recognizable to most fans. However, actor Sean Astin as Porter offers a few deadly surprises along the way. Also, a few slower moments threaten to derail the momentum of the film,...

In all fairness, director Kaare Andrews could have shown colonoscopy footage for an hour and a half and it still would have entertained viewers longer than Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever managed to – but our ambitious auteur goes above and beyond by delivering a sequel more in line with Roth’s original cult phenomenon. Sure, Rider Strong doesn’t drop in for another “explosive” cameo, but back once again is Roth’s flesh-eating virus, and this time it’s ready for the big leagues. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero is a puss-ridden, grotesque, splattery bit of biological horror, and while it lacks the indie charms that wooed franchise fans initially, Andrews’ pseudo-reboot could be the start of something nasty – rivaling Roth’s signature brand of stomach-turning visual horrors.

Eleven years after Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever, and five years after Ti West’s Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, horror’s tiniest serial killer is back, with a new installment from Kaare Andrews, a director probably best known for his 2013 ABCs of Death segment.
Officially a prequel rather than a sequel, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero attempts to provide an origin story for the virus, while still delivering enough laughs and gore to keep fans of the previous two films happy. However, like its predecessor Spring Fever, this latest strain of the franchise lacks the infectious inventiveness and sheer bite that made Roth’s first film a cult classic: in horror terms, think mild rash, rather than full-on flesh-eating fury.
Employing a dual narrative technique, Andrews’s film splits the action into two distinct storylines. One of these centers on a remote research facility, where scientists battle to find a...

Set about half a century after Kelly Reichardt’s wagon wilderness Meek’s Cutoff, Ti West is switching gears. A planned move away from the comfort dwellings of the horror genre, we imagine there’ll still be some splatter in his take on the western. His American Old West looks to include John Travolta and will surely star Ethan Hawke who has been a sort of good-luck charm for Jason Blum, who’ll produce and ta-teamed with the actor on Sinister and The Purge. THR also reports that Jacob Jaffke and Peter Phok return to the fold – and will also produce In a Valley of Violence.

We already had a little chat about this project, so I’m sure you’re going to love this little casting update. Angela Oberer, probably best known as Ms. Hawker from 2009 horror thriller Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever has just joined the cast of the upcoming dark indie comedy Killing Winston Jones!
Oberer joins previously announced Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Masterson, Danny Glover, Jon Heder and Lesley-Ann Brandt, and she will come on board to play the principal role of Mrs. Centerwall.
The new feature film dark comedy directed by Joel David Moore is currently filming in Savannah Ga, and as we already reported, the movie will center on:
…a sixth-grade English teacher who’s on a mission to get the newly constructed junior high gymnasium named after his father (despite the fact that the person so memorialized must be dead). All that will lead to a bitter contest over the...

Ti West has chosen his next project. The young horror director, who’s worked on Trigger Man, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, The Innkeepers and The House Of The Devil, as well as a segment of V/H/S, is going to be making Sacrament his next project. We don’t know much about it beyond the title, but obviously it’ll have a religious touch.
I’ll admit that I don’t know Ti West from Adam, and I was just trying out an old phrase, and I hate it, so my apologies. But no, I’m not exactly qualified to talk about this, but I suspect big fans of the director may be a little tepid about the news. Why? Roth said the following: ”We want to make this Ti’s first mainstream movie, without sacrificing the quality and unflinching horror of the subject matter.” Yes, he qualifies...

Ti West is attached to direct horror thriller The Sacrament.
The writer and director, who made his directorial debut with the unfortunate Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, has made quite the impression with his past two features, The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, both of which were critical successes.
Details on The Sacrament are scarce, but it’s more than likely the film will follow similar themes and subjects seen in his previous work, including the segments he contributed to V/H/S (read our review here) and The ABCs of Death, due to premiere at the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival.
The Sacrament will be financed by Worldview Entertainment and produced by fellow writer and director Eli Roth (Hostel), who recently made his love of West’s work clear:

Horror director Ti West has been working on short segments in films like the terrifying V/H/S and the upcoming ABCs of Death (which debuts in Toronto soon) for a little while now, but we finally have some new info about another full-length horror project. The Playlist reports that West will direct The Sacrament, another horror thriller in line with his previous films House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Worldview Entertainment, one of the companies backing the new movie, has also secured Hostel director Eli Roth as a producer, so it should be quite the meeting of the minds when The Sacrament gets rolling. As The Playlist points out, West directed the 2009 movie Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, a sequel to Roth's breakout original, before West ultimately tried to remove his name from the film altogether (it's still attached at IMDb). This will be their first real collaboration...

The decade following The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a somewhat challenging one for Sean Astin. The former star of The Goonies and Rudy had a part in season 5 of 24 and also did a fair amount of voice acting work, but has not been able to land many roles in high-profile A-list projects. Instead, he has chosen to star in some low budget genre films, a move that is becoming more and more respectable nowadays as direct-to-video slowly gets replaced by video-on-demand. Now he will headline his most prominent genre flick yet, a prequel to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever called Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. The film is being directed by comic book artist Kaare Andrews from a screenplay by Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher). According to THR, Astin will join Brando Eaton (Balls Out: The Gary Houseman Story) and Ben Hollingsworth (The Joneses) in the horror film,...

While Ti West is not yet a household name he is a strong brand and a seal of quality. Beginning with the ultra-low budget The Roost before moving on to Trigger Man, House of the Devil and the troubled Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, West has spent the last decade producing a string of high quality creepers that recall Edgar Allen Poe and The Dulpass Brothers in equal measure. Hitting theaters tomorrow after a VOD run is his new film, The Innkeepers, which West acutely describes as, “A charming ghost story.” Like most of West’s previous films, it is an understated and moody horror yarn that focuses more on characters than it does on blood, guts and jump scares. It’s a real gem if you’re willing to step outside the expected genre conventions. Recently, I sat down with West and his star Sara Paxton to discuss the film.

Ti West quickly established himself as a director to watch with The Roost, his first feature film, and he's built on that foundation with his subsequent work (Trigger Man and, especially, The House of the Devil). Even his ill-fated Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever showed great big flashes of his distinctive style. And by that, I don't mean he's simply done the same movie over and over again; instead, it's clear that he's attracted to a variety of material and makes the type of movie that serves the material best. While I wasn't bowled over by The Roost or Trigger Man -- in fact, some sequences in the latter film drove me friggin' nuts -- the films are transparently the product of an individual's creative...

The first thought that came to mind upon arriving to director Buddy Giovinazzo’s then-shooting supernatural horror flick Ginger on Sunday, December 18 of 2011 was, “This looks like some place Charles Manson would have frequented back in the Sixties.” As I was to find, I was correct in that assumption, and as it turned out, Giovinazzo himself, too, was working hard to add yet another creepy chapter to the location’s storied past alongside Ginger stars Marc Senter and Elissa Dowling.

Writer-director Ti West (The Innkeepers) has found the star of his next project. Deadline reports that Liv Tyler will star in the psychological sci-fi thriller The Side Effect. The horror story centers on “a woman who spends several months alone in space as an experimental subject for a global pharmaceutical company, and finds herself inexplicably pregnant.” So it’s kind of like Moon, but with the added terrors of ghost reproduction. Though the film is still in the horror genre, West insists that it’s fairly different from his previous films as it focuses more on the psychological. I’d expect a title change on The Side Effect, as Steven Soderbergh is gearing up to shoot a film called The Side Effects. West will be at Sundance next week to debut the found-footage horror film V/H/S which he co-directed. If you’re unfamiliar, his earlier works include The House of the Devil...

Ti West’s career thus far has been quite the bumpy road. The House of the Devil is a terrific film (I know he did two other films before that), even if everyone agrees that the ending is rather lame. West has an eye for that retro-look and must have been saturated in that material ever since he was a small child; it is his territory and I don’t think anyone can touch him in that regard. After The House of the Devil came Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, which many felt to be lacking. The reason for Cabin Fever 2 not being as adequate as House of the Devil has to do with the studio taking that movie out of West’s hands. Even though he is labeled as the director, it was not under his command towards the end of production. Now we have The Innkeepers which is...
