Movies serve as more than simply a medium through which we get experience; they are an emotion we like to incorporate into our lives. Numerous films are released each month on multiple streaming services, which is quite convenient for many of us. However, with so many alternatives at hand, it can be a hassle to pick the right film. The “opening” was a disaster. The creators were bitterly feuding. Half the funding pulled out with much of the rest lost in a poker game.

It was all very cinematic, but at stake was the future of a great magazine, not a movie. The opening marked the debut of The New Yorker, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this week at a moment that is not propitious for either magazines or movies.

Magazines have been folding at an alarming rate. Support for once-revered titles like Newsweek or Time or for corporate parents like Condé Nast teeters ominously. Even Donald Trump last week asked “is Time still in business?” after Elon Musk hovered on its Trump cover.

Despite layoffs, The New Yorker with its 1.23 million subscribers is itself a study in survival, as a forthcoming Netflix documentary will testify. The resilience of the magazine mirrors that of a Hollywood studio — a periodic “blockbuster” has fortified support.

Paramount has announced the lineup of movies, TV shows and live sports coming to Paramount+ in March, which will mark the streaming service’s fourth anniversary. The Paramount Plus March 2025 schedule includes the updated Women Who Move Mountains collection, which shines a light on the real and fictional women who inspire.

For Women’s History Month, new additions to the collection include A League of Their Own, Annihilation, Blue Crush, Ex Machina, Failure to Launch, Julie & Julia, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life, Marie Antoinette, Practical Magic, Room, Sugar & Spice, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Women and more.

Speaking of strong leading ladies, don’t miss the premiere of the original series Happy Face, inspired by the true-life story of Melissa G. Moore (played by Annaleigh Ashford) who discovered that her once beloved father, Keith Jesperson (Dennis Quaid), was the prolific serial killer known as Happy Face.

Exclusive: Oscar winner Melissa Leo, Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell are boarding André Øvredal’s untitled horror movie for Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz.

Former Warner Bros production executive Hamada is producing the pic via his production company as part of his first-look deal with Paramount, alongside It screenwriter Gary Dauberman via Coin Operated. The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess; the plot, of course, is under wraps. Nathan Samdahl of 18hz will executive produce. Hamada is also producing Primate, which is in post-production, at Paramount.

Leo won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2011 for Paramount’s David O. Russell-directed The Fighter. She’s starred in such movies as Frozen River, on which she received an Oscar nom for Best Actress, and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, The Equalizer franchise, Oliver Stone’s Snowden and the HBO series I Know This Much Is True. She is repped by Gersh.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.

The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.

Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors, and actors to develop their original independent projects.

Leo recently starred in Long Gone Heroes with John Hutcherson and King Ivory, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The New York City-born native who grew up in Putney and Bellows Falls, Vt, won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for David O. Russell’s The Fighter as Alice Ward, the matriarch to boxer Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his drug-addled brother portrayed by Christian Bale (who also an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the role). Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in October 2024, including a lot of horror content for the month of Halloween. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.

Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of childrens films. Published in 1991, his non-fiction book “Homicide: A Year of Killing Streets” pools two years of research from Simon’s time spent observing the Baltimore Police Department, which itself followed four years spent on the police beat for The Baltimore Sun newspaper.

Wishing to adapt the book into a feature film, Simon got a copy to filmmaker and Baltimore native Barry Levinson, who felt the material was better suited to a TV series. Exclusive: Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actress Julia Stiles has wrapped production on her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, based on the bestseller by Renee Carlino. The cast includes Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice), Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco), Gabby Kono (Magic Carpet Rides), Jennifer Grey (A Real Pain) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier).

Exclusive: Terence Winter, the writer-producer known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and more, will team with Vincent Piazza, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Phiphen to develop Midge, a tragicomic feature based on an absurd but true, as-yet-untold story.

At the center of it is Thomas Midgley, Jr., the man who in the first half of the 20th century invented two of the most toxic and disastrous chemicals humankind has ever known — leaded gasoline and Freon —without having even been a chemist.

In a statement on the project, Winter told Deadline that “the only thing crazier than this story is that it hasn’t already been told.”

He’s teaming with Piazza to pen the script and both will exec produce, along with automotive journalist Jamie Lincoln Kitman, who also serves as a research consultant on the project. Phiphen’s founder Molly Conners will produce alongside Academy Award nominee Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club). Director meetings are underway.

Winter is best known for creating the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, as well as for producing and scripting dozens of episodes of The Sopranos, for which he earned three Emmy Awards. In his 25-plus years in television, he’s also won three PGA awards and four from the WGA. Also the creator of HBO’s Vinyl, he’s otherwise best known for scripting Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. More recently, he co-wrote Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, which is out in theaters now.

Piazza is best known for his work on the acting front, having appeared in everything from Boardwalk Empire and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys to the Sylvester Stallone starrer Tulsa King and IFC thriller Centigrade.

Most recently, Appian Way produced the DiCaprio starrer Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Scorsese, which is up this year for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Phiphen’s recent projects include the comedic thriller Coup! starring Peter Sarsgaard, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and will be released by Greenwich Entertainment, and the Nicolas Cage Western Butcher’s Crossing.

Winter is repped by CAA, Lbi Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Piazza by Gersh, Untitled Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.

Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.

On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

Much has been made of titles being quietly removed from HBO Max over the last few week, but while the number of films departing the service in September is substantial, at least subscribers have a heads up.

As is the case every month, various movies are due to leave HBO Max in September, and below we’ve got the full list of which films are leaving and when so you can prioritizing some viewing options. Noteworthy removals include the 2021 Warner Bros. thriller “The Little Things” starring Denzel Washington (leaving Sept. 16), the 2020 “Freaky Friday” horror riff “Freaky,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films, the “Lethal Weapon” franchise, “Super 8,” “Tootsie” and the Nancy Meyers classic “The Holiday.”

Production wrapped recently in Ireland

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Melissa Leo and Antonio Banderas have joined Yale’s action crime thriller Clean Up Crew which recently wrapped production in Ireland.

The company’s sales arm Great Escape led by Nick Donnermeyer will handle international rights and introduce the title in Toronto next month.

The film follows a crime scene clean-up crew who discover a briefcase full of cash and unwittingly get into battle with mobsters, hitmen and corrupt government agents who will stop at nothing to retrieve it. Leo and Rhys Meyers play members of the clean-up crew while Banderas portrays a ruthless crime boss.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Oscar winner Melissa Leo and Antonio Banderas have signed onto the Yale Entertainment action-crime thriller Clean Up Crew from director Jon Keeyes.

The Ireland-based production recently wrapped, and Yale’s recently-launched sales banner Great Escape, led by Nick Donnermeyer, will handle foreign rights and introduce the title at next month’s Toronto Film Festival.

Pic follows a crime scene clean-up crew, which includes Rhys Meyers and Leo’s characters, who discover a briefcase full of cash, unknowingly sending them into battle with mobsters – led by a ruthless crime boss, played by Banderas, as well as hitmen, and corrupt government agents who are hellbound to get the dough back. Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the worldwide rights to “Jane,” a YA thriller starring “Riverdale’s” Madelaine Petsch.

The cast also includes Grammy-nominated singer songwriter Chlöe Bailey, Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo, and model Chloe Yu. Blue Fox Entertainment will release “Jane” theatrically this fall, with the film debuting simultaneously on Creator+. For the unfamiliar, Creator+ produces feature-length films in partnership with digital creators and monetizes through their fanbases across mobile, web and connected TV. Blue Fox will introduce the film to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival this month.

“Jane” centers on a perfect high school senior, Olivia (Petsch), who struggles with grief from the recent loss of a friend. When she gets deferred from her dream school, she begins to spiral out of control, launching a social media-fueled rampage against those that stand in the way of her success.

On the heels of a successful in-person event that welcomed such stars as Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, Liev Schreiber and “Dopesick” creator Danny Strong, the 2022 Sun Valley Film Festival, which ran from March 30 to April 3, announced its juried film award winners.

Best narrative feature film went to “Linoleum,” directed by Colin West. “Holy Emy,” helmed by Araceli Lemos, received a special mention. Ron Howard’s “We Feed People” netted the fest’s audience award.

The winners were announced during the Idaho fest’s annual awards bash, which took place at Whiskey Jacques on Ketchum’s main drag of town, and was hosted by filmmaker Bobby Farrelly and comedian Hayes MacArthur, with a musical performance by the Nude Party.

Voting jury members at the fest included Jo Addy (global film and entertainment director of Soho House), Eric Bress, Trevor Groth (film financier at 30West) and producer Heather Rae.

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.

The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.

Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.

January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

Few things feel better as a film lover than getting to see a longtime character actor, someone who’s been stealing scenes in supporting parts for decades, getting the chance to shine in a plum leading role and absolutely knocking it out of the park. Exclusive: Landmark Theatres has entered into a long-term lease for the Scottsdale Quarter luxury multiplex in Scottsdale Arizona which was previously occupied by dine-in-cinema iPic Theatre. This is Landmark’s first theatre in the market since originally having the Valley Art Theater in Tempe, Arizona during the early 1980s, which is now owned and operated by Harkins.

The eight-screen plex will reopen this fall after being shuttered since the end of the January 2020.

“We are very excited to extend our brand in a beautifully designed luxury theatre in an upscale center,” Landmark Theatres President and COO Paul Serwitz tells Deadline. “This announcement is especially joyous for us, coming out of a period of pandemic-induced retraction of business in the world at large.”

Endeavor Content has set a three-film development deal with producer Heather Rae, committing to movie scripts from Indigenous filmmakers. The new pact was announced on Oct. 12, Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Along with Rae, Crystal EchoHawk of IllumiNative and Bird Runningwater of Sundance Institute are advising on the projects. Research from IllumiNative — a woman-led racial justice organization that amplifies Native voices — found that Native people are vastly underrepresented on screen. They make up anywhere from 0% to .04% of representation in American film and television. There are even fewer Native writers and directors. The partnership with Endeavor Content aims to grow those numbers by providing a platform for Indigenous filmmakers.

Pulsar Content, the Paris-based sales company launched at Toronto, has acquired “Wild Indian,” a thriller executive produced by and starring Jesse Eisenberg, along with Michael Greyeyes (“Fear the Walking Dead”). The film marks the feature debut of Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr., whose shorts have played at Toronto and Sundance.

“Wild Indian” was developed at the Sundance Writer, Director and Producer labs, and also took part in the first Catalyst Program at last year’s Sundance. The film also stars Chaske Spencer (“Woman Walks Ahead”) and Kate Bosworth (“Still Alice”).

There are some big changes coming to Netflix in July.

From new shows and movies, to shows and movies leaving the service, it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up to speed on all the movers and shakers.

That's why we'll be running this monthy article with all the information you need about these changes.

The biggest premiere on the streaming giant in the month of July will likely be Stranger Things Season 3, which is getting a Thursday launch on July 4th.

The extra long weekend should give viewers ample time to binge the eight-episode third season of the sci-fi drama.

Orange is the New Black is also back in July, but it will be the final season. The streamer confirmed last year that it was time to bring the groundbreaking series to a close.

Netflix has confirmed that 44 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in Ju;y including: season 3 of “Stranger Things”; season 4 of “Queer Eye”; season 7 of “Orange is the New Black”; and season 11 of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

Among the new films on offer are: several installments of “Bangkok Love Stories”; a remake of “Point Blank” starring Anthony Mackie; the documentary “The Great Hack”‘; and the mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein.”

Netflix has everyone’s Fourth of July entertainment covered.

Hitting the streaming platform on July 4 is “Stranger Things” season three, which is finally returning two years after its predecessor. Martin Scorsese fans are also sure to be excited once they see four of the director’s films (“Taxi Driver” “Mean Streets” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Who’s That Knocking at My Door?”) ready to stream on the first day of the month.

Additionally, Fourth of July celebrants can look back on history with Netflix’s own revisionist features such as “Inglourious Basterds” before enjoying some family fun with more kid friendly options like “Megamind” and “Princess and the Frog.”

Rachel Brosnahan is deepening her relationship with Amazon.

The “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star has signed a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, under which she and her Scrap Paper Pictures production company will develop TV series exclusively for Amazon’s streaming platform.

Brosnahan has won several awards for her performance as Midge Maisel, including an Emmy Award and two Golden Globes. She is also set to produce and star in the Amazon Studios feature “I’m Your Woman.”

“A breakout star, Rachel has infused the role of Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel with charm, wit, and a little bit of chutzpah that brings the world of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to life,'” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We are thrilled to expand our relationship with her as an actress and a producer, and I can’t wait to see what new characters and stories she creates for our Amazon Prime Video customers.

It’s almost July. We know that because Netflix has come through with its list of new content being added in July, and what titles are being removed from the streamer throughout the month.

Most notably, “Stranger Things” Season 3 is dropping on July 4, so you can watch fireworks And be reunited with Eleven, Will Byers, Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Max, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve Harrington, Joyce and Hopper at long last, all in one day.

“Queer Eye” Season 4 is comin’ at ya July 19, along with new episodes of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” The seventh and final season of “Orange Is The New Black” comes July 26.

Daniel Dae Kim has entered into business with Amazon.

The actor and producer, along with his 3Ad production label, has signed a new first-look deal with Amazon Studios. As part of the deal, Amazon will have first-look rights on projects developed by Kim and 3Ad. Any collaborations between the two parties will premiere exclusively on Amazon’s streaming platform.

Kim and his production company, who were previously under a first look deal with ITV Studios America, are best known for bringing the Korean format “The Good Doctor” to ABC. The series’ two seasons to date have been a ratings hit for the network. Kim serves as an executive producer on the show along with David Shore.

Exclusive: Award-winning Handmaid’s Tale helmer Reed Morano has joined Lbi Entertainment’s talent roster. Morano made history as a director and executive producer of Hulu’s Elisabeth Moss-led series. She became the first woman ever to win the Emmy and DGA Award for drama series in the same year and was the first woman to win an Emmy for directing a drama series in 22 years.

Paramount’s The Rhythm Section with mark a studio film directing debut for Morano, who got her start as a cinematographer on films such as And So It Goes, Frozen River, and The Skeleton Twins. The spy thriller starring Blake Lively will hit theaters in November. Morano’s feature directorial film came in 2015 with the Olivia Wilde and Luke Wilson-starrer Meadowland, which premiered at Tribeca. Her follow-up feature, I Think We’re Alone Now starring Peter Dinklage picked up the Sundance Special Jury Prize.

So much of the recent political debate has focused on the United States’ southern border, and on the threat of illegal drugs and criminals filtering up through Mexico. But what of the north, where Americans traffic opiates and prescription pills from Canada across a border that runs nearly three times as long? “Little Woods” opens and closes with shots that straddle this imaginary line, filmed by a cameraman with one foot in North Dakota and the other in Canada — an abstract but effective reminder that all this talk of walls distracts from problems facing another portion of the population altogether.

With “Little Woods,” writer-director Nia DaCosta concentrates many of these concerns into the dour daily struggles of two young women, self-reliant Ollie (Tessa Thompson) and her more trouble-prone half-sister Deb (Lily James), who stand to lose the house where Ollie nursed their mother through what appears to have been a tough final chapter.

What’s it like living strapped in America? Little Woods, an uneven but compelling feature debut from writer-director Nia DaCosta, takes you right into the trenches. Things are booming in the remote town of Little Woods, North Dakota, as long as you’re in the oil business. But if you’re Ollie (Tessa Thompson), out on probation after doing time for smuggling drugs in from Canada, all you feel is the agony of having your options squeezed. She can barely hold onto the house where she cared for her now-deceased mother.
