From Hayao Miyazaki to Ichiro Itano, ‘Zenshu’ Is Mappa’s Love Letter to the Most Legendary Animators
Premiered earlier this year, Studio Mappa’s original anime, Zenshu, once again put the spotlight on the anime industry. Any mention of the Japanese animation industry sparks a mixed response from the audience. On one hand we have the bleaker aspects such as the debilitating working conditions, stereotypical representations, and fan service.
The flip side of that perception is the myriad worlds that have been brought to life with revered 2D animation. From cultural phenomena like the Big Three anime to comedy series like Nichijou and Gintama, the anime industry has allowed fans to experience a wide range of emotions.

It would not be unfair or incorrect to say that anime, as a medium, has actually influenced the lives of many. Zenshu brings the good, the bad, and the ugly all to life. However, the focus on the good is delightful and honors the legacy of renowned animators.

When it comes to impossible feats of strength, the only limit that exists for anime characters is their creators’ imagination. From summoning ancient monsters to mastering the power of every element to obliterating entire planets with a single spell or move, unbelievable supernatural abilities know no bounds in anime, their uniqueness and scope being what draws many fans to the medium.
However, some of anime’s strongest characters, surprisingly enough, don’t have to rely on the aid of magic or paranormal enhancements to achieve superhuman triumphs. While still way stronger than your average human - sometimes, to the point of far surpassing realistic human abilities — these anime characters have nothing supernatural about them.

The anime medium has several genres that range from pulse-pounding action to heartbreaking romance. There's also a plethora of comedy anime, with the best of these having humor that's so ridiculous that it's hilarious. Even beyond this genre, however, some anime are just downright dumb, namely if they aren't meant to be laughed at.
Some of the dumbest anime blur the lines between intentional and unintentional comedies, being able to be laughed at for their storytelling decisions. Others are true in these comedic efforts, while others are doomed because of the quality of their English dubs, resulting in unintended gags that are still infamous to this day. Even worse are those that can't be taken seriously at all due to how seriously they take themselves, particularly when the animation doesn't match the tone of the anime.

Gintama is always a constant inclusion in comedy anime recommendations. And it has retained its position for decades. No amount of recent funny anime can replace it, and it’s place has been solidified in history as one of the most beloved anime of all time.

Most anime are created from manga source material, which is published by a major company, so series like Demon Slayer and Dandadan are in the same magazine. With one company owning the rights to so many popular franchises, fans would think there would be many crossovers. Unfortunately, anime crossovers are few and far between, with Gintama being the major crossover series.

The rich and diverse medium of anime invites fans to experience no shortage of captivating stories. Pushing the bounds of narrative virtuosity, visual technique, and artistic expressiveness, the best anime films and series are universally acclaimed as masterpieces. In the opulent tapestry of the medium’s cream of the crop, titles like Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gintama, and countless other esteemed works make new fans fall in love with anime and encourage audiences to revisit them time and time again. However, like any prolific medium, anime hardly counts only admired masterworks and celebrated smash hits. Aside from the plethora of forgettable and mediocre titles, a few are situated on the very opposite end of the spectrum from the medium’s revered sensations — the worst anime of all time.

Shonen might be the most popular genre that can generate the most successful and top-grossing anime. But the genre is often plagued by the ill-treatment of women characters and the focus on male gaze. Dandadan is one of the few anime that broke away from the ‘useless Shonen heroine’ trope to give fans Momo, a well-rounded character who is arguably the strongest in her group.
But before Momo existed one classic Shonen girly who is so unhinged that people often forget that she, too, is a female character in a popular Shonen series. The character in question is Kagura from Gintama, who can also be called the superior version of Sakamoto Days‘ Lu.

Few anime franchises (if any) are more iconic than Akira Toriyama's flagship series, Dragon Ball. The beloved shonen manga debuted all the way back in 1984, and by the end of the decade, it had spawned two of the most popular anime adaptations — Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z — of all time.
From 1986 to 1996, Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z aired on Fuji TV, and by the end of the 20th century, the adventures of Son Goku had spread their roots around the world. However, Dragon Ball was far from the only notable series that came out during this 10-year window; in fact, there were many iconic series that aired during the same window as Akira Toriyama's seminal work.

After succumbing to old age, Yao had no choice but to retire and let Subaru Kimura, the voice actor of Aoi Todo from Jujutsu Kaisen, take over. However, it looks like Yao might not be the only one who left the One Piece family, as another voice actor gets in line for retirement. Anime is one of the most popular visual mediums of today. While anime endings are typically divisive, there are some beloved by fans everywhere. The finale of Steins;Gate is the quintessential example of a perfect ending. Yet, it is not the only or the best example of this elusive concept.

These finales are considered classics and masterclasses of everything that makes the series great. However, not every conclusion is regarded highly. For a medium that was created in Japan, and often pulls from the country's folklore, mythology, and history, anime about samurai are surprisingly few and far between. Samurai warriors, Ronin, with their signature armor and katanas, all feature heavily across the medium, albeit alongside supernatural forces, magic, dark powers, giant mech suits, or all of the above. Long ago, one of the most beloved Shōnen Jump series of all time made a solid case for anime filler in a condensed, funny package. Gintama is a well-worn shōnen series renowned for its comic take on a genre that, during its heyday, often took itself too seriously, in a way, serving as a forerunner to franchises like One Punch Man. Gintama has won enduring success without abandoning its themes or a serious tone altogether, and it's earned a place in shonen's pantheon of genre greats, as well as a brand-new Gintama anime shown off at Jump Festa.
Anime filler has gained a lot of notoriety for obvious reasons. Even in the best cases, franchises like Naruto show that filler is a double-edged sword, capable of helping or hurting a franchise. If there’s one thing Gintama does flawlessly, it’s dragging the anime tropes through the mud. This series’ self-aware genius repeatedly exposes and parodies other anime productions in a hilarious and outlandish way. Similarly, one Gintama episode demonstrated peak comedy by breaking the fourth wall and turning its sights on a universal struggle in the entertainment industry: how to waste airtime.
