One quick and almost easy way to an Oscar nomination or even a win is for an actress to play another actress, either real or fictional.
Ever since Amanda Seyfried made her feature film debut in 2004’s “Mean Girls,” she has been mostly known for appearing in 2008’s “Mamma Mia!” as Meryl Streep’s daughter Sophie and as Cosette in 2012’s “Les Miserables.” Both musical adaptations of beloved Broadway hits were box-office blockbusters. But the rest of her resume is mostly filled with middle-of-the road fare such as 2010’s “Dear John” and “Letters to Juliet” or under-performers such as 2009’s “Jennifer’s Body,” 2011’s “Red Riding Hood” and 2015’s “Pan.”

With September now over, spooky season is nearly upon us. Halloween can bring out the best in media, with a spotlight on the horror genre in particular, and from classics to originals, Netflix has a ton of scary titles to choose from this month. However, they’re also losing a bunch of great selections starting today.
The company has been at the center of a great deal of controversy lately after canceling numerous shows that had already been renewed, as well as fan favorites that were just getting started. They also got into some trouble when marketing their new film Cuties, which was shamed for emphasizing the sexualization of young children. All this on top of the fact that they recently lost some of their staples like Friends and That ’70s Show to other services, and one would think that the streaming giant has a big problem on their hands.

Eddie Murphy is finally an Emmy winner, having snagged the Best Comedy Guest Actor prize for “Saturday Night Live” at Saturday’s Creative Arts ceremony.
The odds-on favorite the entire season, the star beat out reigning champ Luke Kirby (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Fred Willard (“Modern Family”), Dev Patel (“Modern Love”), and fellow “SNL” nominees Brad Pitt and Adam Driver.
See All the Creative Arts Emmy Awards winners
This was Murphy’s fifth Emmy bid; he earned three during his tenure at “SNL” from 1980-84, and a fourth for producing the animated series “The PJs” in 1999. His hosting stint in December marked the first time he returned to the sketch series in 35 years. The milestone episode scored “SNL’s” its highest ratings in nearly three years as Murphy busted out some of his classic characters, including Buckwheat, Gumby and Mister Robinson, for maximum nostalgia.

It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a ton of new movies and TV shows every month, but you also lose a bunch of stuff, too, as the licensing agreements expire and they hop over to another streaming platform. September will be no different in that regard, either, as the company has now announced a hefty list of titles that are set to make their exit over the coming weeks.
As always, the biggest bulk of departures will go down at the end of the month, but the days leading up to then will also see some notable movies and TV shows vanish from the site, too. And below, you can see the full list of what Netflix will be losing in September.

Netflix was doing pretty good for itself as it was, but when the coronavirus pandemic shut down worldwide production of film and television, business began booming like never before. With so much extra demand, the streaming service is sifting content at an even higher pace, which entails the removal of some great titles that you should watch now while you still got the chance.
Perhaps the saddest loss subscribers will suffer in June is that of Bob Ross’ Beauty is Everywhere. Why exactly the streamer thought it would be a good idea to get rid of the painter’s therapeutically soothing voice and encouraging words in the midst of a nerve-wrecking crisis is a mystery. Fortunately, the deleted episodes are available online for free on Ross’ YouTube channel, which recently launched a respectable reboot of the infamous Joy of Painting series, too.

Netflix has been the saving grace of millions during the quarantine that has forced everyone inside in the midst of our ongoing global pandemic. After an aggressive bidding war with multiple major studios, North American rights for Channing Tatum’s film “Dog” have sold to MGM.
Tatum will star in and co-direct “Dog” with his longtime creative partner Reid Carolin. Carolin also wrote the script, based upon a story by Carolin and Brett Rodriguez.
The film is a road-trip comedy that tracks two hard-charging former Army Rangers paired against their will — Briggs (Tatum), and a Belgian Malinois named Lulu — as they race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, confront the possibility that pet psychics are real, and begin to reckon with the one thing they were trained never to do: surrender.

John Legend is crooning his way onto Facebook Watch.
The noted singer has launched a romance-centric original series on Facebook’s dedicated video platform titled Dear John: Legendary Love Letters -- with eight episodes set to drop daily through Valentine’s Day. This isn't the butter-voiced songwriter's first foray into animation either; he previously voiced a character in an animated short from Baobab Studios called Crow: The Legend.
Dear John premiered yesterday on Legend’s Facebook page (9.9 million followers), and will celebrate real-life love stories as contributed by fans from around the globe -- via Facebook, of course. Episodes will cover many of the different ways that humans express their love for one another, per Facebook, including friendship, daily compassion, blind dates, long distance relationships, and more. In each episode, Legend will simply read a submitted letter alongside an accompanying animation.

Valentine’s Day is approaching quickly, but Netflix has got it covered when it comes to finding the perfect film or show to get viewers in the mood. Did you enjoy Christmas at the Coterie?
What Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 9 and Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 10 managed to do were give us some of the best dynamics, provided a mini-Fosters reunion, and color in some of the things we don't get to see when the rest of the storyline has to unfold.
The Christmas special worked as a standalone event.
It didn't further the storyline-- it only touched upon the events of Good Trouble Season 2 Episode 8 via Mariana reading the Dear John letter Callie left her as she departed the Coterie and moved in with Jamie.
It also closed with Callie unpacking at Jamie's gorgeous penthouse while reflecting on her sister's Christmas gift only to be faced with another potential issue.
Standalones are great for character studies. They slow things down and focus on a few individuals to dissect them or peel back more layers.

Michael Douglas had a very good Monday. Not only did he celebrate dad/icon Kirk Douglas‘ 103rd birthday, but he received his second straight Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Comedy/Musical Actor for “The Kominsky Method.” As the reigning champ, he now could do what no one has done in a decade: win back-to-back awards.
The last person to defend his comedy/musical actor crown was Alec Baldwin 10 years ago for the third-going-into-fourth seasons of “30 Rock.” That was actually his third Globe, following his first win for the first season. Not counting Douglas, everyone since has been a one-time champ: Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Matt LeBlanc (“Episodes”), Don Cheadle (“House of Lies”), Andy Samberg (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”), Gael Garcia Bernal (“Mozart in the Jungle”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”).

Henry Thomas is back in the spotlight 37 years after the release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Thomas, 48, has led a low-key life since his breakout role in the Steven Spielberg film in which he starred opposite Drew Barrymore, but that hasn’t meant the actor has stopped working.
The star surprised fans on Thanksgiving when he reunited with E.T. in a four-minute ad for Comcast called “A Holiday Reunion.”

Tatum will star and produced with his Free Association partners Reid Carolin and Peter Keirnan, along with Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner and John Fischer of Temple Hill. The latter company produced the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Dear John which starred Tatum and Amanda Seyfried and was directed by Lasse Halstrom.

Tatum will star in the film, as well as produce alongside Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan for their Free Association. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Isaac Klausner and John Fischer will also serve as producers.

Last Year’s Winner: Merritt Wever, “Godless”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: No actress has ever won this category more than twice — Jane Alexander (“Playing for Time” and “Warm Springs”), Judy Davis (“Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” and “The Starter Wife”), Colleen Dewhurst (“Between Two Women” and “Those She Left Behind”), and Mare Winningham (“Amber Waves” and “George Wallace”) are the only actresses to win twice for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie, and Regina King (“American Crime”) is the only actress to win two trophies consecutively.
Fun Fact: The Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie race has been somewhat immune to the streaming and premium cable dominance seen in other Emmy categories. Over the last five years, winners have come from broadcast, basic cable, premium cable, and streaming. If you expand the timeframe to this decade, two additional networks are represented,...

Over a single opening weekend, composer Pinar Toprak smashed all previous box-office records for women composers in film. She scored “Captain Marvel,” which made $153 million domestically.
Until now, the top-grossing films by women composers were Rachel Portman’s “The Vow,” which made $125 million domestic in 2012, and Deborah Lurie’s “Dear John,” $80 million back in 2010 — and those sums were for the theatrical lifetime of the films, not just a weekend.
The lack of work for female composers has been a frequent topic of conversation in film-music circles since the 2014 formation of the Alliance for Women Film Composers, which now boasts more than 400 members.
According to the latest “Celluloid Ceiling” statistics from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, just 6 percent of the 250 top-grossing films of 2018 had scores by women — but that number was double the 3 percent found in the list of 2017 films.

According to hundreds of Gold Derby users currently predicting the Creative Arts Emmys, Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”) is the front-runner to win Best Drama Guest Actor for his role as real-life serial killer Ed Kemper. But on paper that might seem unlikely. “Mindhunter” got no other nominations, so can he really take down actors from Best Drama Series contenders like “This is Us” (Gerald McRaney and Ron Cephas Jones), “The Crown” (Matthew Goode) and “Westworld” (Jimmi Simpson)? To win under those circumstances is somewhat rare, but not unprecedented.
The Emmys introduced guest-acting categories in 1986, and since then eight people have won on their shows’ only nomination. It happened three times in Best Comedy Guest Actor: Cleavon Little, Tim Conway and Peter Scolari.
It happened three times in Best Drama Guest Actress: Viveca Landfors, Amanda Plummer and Cloris Leachman.

That was the case on “Bohemian Rhapsody,” in which Bryan Singer was given the credit, even though he was fired in the latter stages of shooting and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. That rule can be waived to allow two directors to be credited when filmmakers have a history of...

Former Party of Five and Time of Your Life star Jennifer Love Hewitt is returning to Fox as a lead opposite Angela Bassett and Peter Krause in Season 2 of breakout crime drama 9-1-1, from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear.
Hewitt will play the new character of Maddie, the sister of firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), who is starting her life over as a 911 operator. (The announcement was made today during Fox’s upfront presentation.)
The introduction of Maddie would help fill the void left by the departure of Connie Britton who played 911 operator Abby Clark in Season 1. Britton had a one-year deal for the show but the producers still hope that she would come back for a few episodes next season to make the transition more seamless. (Britton earlier today was at the NBCUniversal upfront presentation promoting her new Bravo limited series Dear John).

Lasse Hallstrom is adapting another Nicholas Sparks novel -- "Safe Haven" -- for Relativity Media, the studio announced Thursday. He directed 2010's "Dear John," also based on a Sparks novel, and has directed a raft of adaptations, including the 1985 "My Life as a Dog," the 1999 "The Cider House Rules," the 2001 "The Shipping News" and the 2000 "Chocolat." And Sparks's novels have been adapted quite a few times. In addition to "Dear John," he wrote "The Notebook," "The Last Song" and "Nights in Rodanthe." "Safe Haven" is a love story about...

Saturday PM/Sunday AM: Yes, I went AWOL from Friday night's North American box office. But can you blame me? With these two pics opening this Super Bowl weekend? Update: So Sony Pictures spinmeisters respond: "Clint Culpepper is one of the most successful executives in this industry. The film over performed. He makes genre movies and he makes them well. Easy A was one of the best films of the year. What was mysoginistic about that, or Burlesque or Country Strong or Dear John. And if strong women characters at the center of two very popular franchises (Resident Evil and Underworld) is somehow demeaning to women, I would love to understand why." Increasingly, Sony Pictures' Screen Gems has become the Odd Lots of movie divisions: you never know what you're going to find there, but you know it's cheap crap. Worse, Clint Culpepper is one misogynist dude when it comes...

Beware the power of an overwhelming "Hangover." That's the first lesson of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, because the votes are in and the Bradley Cooper-starring comedy leads the field with six nominations. Following close behind in that flick's boozy wake are "New Moon" and "Avatar," each of which nabbed five nominations.
"The Hangover" was tapped in categories including Best Movie, Best Comedic Performance (Cooper and Zach Galifianakis) and Best Villain (Ken Jeong). After "Twilight" led the 2009 awards with seven nominations, the vampire sequel's 2010 nods include Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Kristen Stewart), and Best Male Performance (Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner). "Avatar" scored in such categories as Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Zoe Saldana) and Best Villain (Stephen Lang).

Seyfried Wrote Song For Dear John
Amanda Seyfried's musical ambitions were given a boost by her latest movie Dear John - she wrote a song which appeared on the film's soundtrack.
The actress, who showcased her musical ability in movie-musical Mamma Mia!, has long harboured dreams of becoming a singer/songwriter.
And she was delighted when Lasse Hallstrom, the director of Dear John, asked her to bring her guitar on set to write a song for the film, which culminated in the track, Little House, being included on the soundtrack.
She tells Britain's Glamour magazine, "It was a happy accident. The director asked me to bring my guitar on set and I ended up singing a song that I'd written, which ended up on the soundtrack. Writing songs is a stress-buster for me."...
