Sound of Freedom is defying expectations at the box office in the summer of 2023, and it's not just because of its talented cast. The 2023 action movie is based on the story of anti-sex trafficking activist Tim Ballard, who quit his job with the Department of Homeland Security to found a nonprofit organization that aims to end child trafficking. The film centers around his career change and one of his first missions to save children from sex traffickers in Colombia. It's a difficult story to witness, but an important one regardless.
The real-life Tim Ballard was involved in the making of the film, and he even knew exactly which actor he wanted to play him in Sound of Freedom — Jim Caviezel. Thankfully, director Alejandro Monteverde and the producers were able to snag the dream casting. Caviezel gives a brilliant performance in Sound of Freedom, but his character wasn't the only prominent figure in the 2023 film.

Everything looked spectacular for Mira Sorvino in 1996. She'd just won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Woody Allen's "Mighty Aphrodite", she was beautiful, and a slew of high-profile offers soon followed. Unfortunately, the majority of those projects were considered commercial flops on release, and her star quickly faded from view. Nevertheless, while her time as an A-lister proved woefully brief, Sorvino has continued working steadily in independent projects, despite the fact that you've probably never heard of most of them. ("Attack on Leningrad", anyone? "Like Dandelion Dust"?) Her next film, entitled "The Class Project", will see the actress...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
From Prada to Nada – Camilla Belle, Alexa Vega, Kuno Becker (limited)
The Mechanic – Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Donald Sutherland
The Rite – Colin O’Donoghue, Anthony Hopkins, Ciarán Hinds
Movie of the Week
The Mechanic
The Stars: Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Donald Sutherland
The Plot: An elite hit man teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims.
The Buzz: Jason Statham is kind of cookie cutter, and this looks to be just another of his many action extravaganzas, but he does turn in some good work from time to time. Death Race, for instance, was good, and I enjoyed the first Transporter too. Ben Foster has been on the rise now for quite some time — I imagine a few years from now he’ll be knocking on the door of the household name. I enjoyed him a lot in Pandorum,...

"Enter the Void" (2010)

Somehow it's fitting that two of last year's most dangerous films will be hitting DVD shelves the same week, both being favorites of the IFC.com staff. "Dogtooth," Lanthimos' much-debated Un Certain Regard winner from Cannes, concerns the lives of three culturally isolated children -- two daughters and a son, who range from mid-teens to early 20s -- fenced in by their parents' country home, who receive a reeducation when their lone connection to the outside world, a female security guard for their parents' business, introduces them to the joys of sex and Sylvester Stallone films. Meanwhile, "Irreversible" provocateur Noé's latest is a wildly ambitious 155-minute extravaganza set inside the mind of a drug dealer told from the first-person perspective. We know you were losing sleep over it, so we're happy to be the first to tell you that Furry Vengeance and Yogi Bear are both eligible to be nominated for Best Screenplay Oscars on January 25. Also that Marmaduke score that has been wearing out your iPod? It's eligible too. However, the inclusion of these 2010 masterpieces really isn't that big a surprise. With final nominations just over a month away the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 241 screenplays - 134 original and 107 adapted - are eligible for a Best Screenplay nomination and that music from 77 films is eligible for Best Original Score (not including Black Swan, The Fighter or The Kids Are All Right [1]). Add those to the 248 films eligible [2] for Best Picture and Oscar voters have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Kind of. See the full lists, the favorites and read the rules after the jump.

The AMPAS have named 241 scripts eligible for the Academy Awards — 134 original, 107 adapted. Unlike the WGA, Winter’s Bone, King’s Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon will be considered.
The AMPAS have also released the list of nominees for best score. The list was narrowed down to 77 scores, which makes Best Original Score the 2011 Oscar the category with the least number of films under consideration. The scores for Black Swan, True Grit, The Kids Are Alright and The Fighter will not be eligible to compete this year. Clint Mansell‘s Black Swan score and Carter Burwell‘s True Grit score were disqualified attributed to a designation within Rule 16 of the Academy’s Special Rules for Music Awards (5d under “Eligibility”), which excludes “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.” Meanwhile, the scores for The Kids Are All Right,...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Writers Guild of America revealed the films that will be eligible for this year’s Writers Guild Awards, and the lists – both Original and Adapted – are noteworthy for the titles that are not in the running.
“Toy Story 3” and “How to Train Your Dragon,” for instance, were declared ineligible. So was “Winter’s Bone” and “The King’s Speech,” believed by many Oscar pundits to be a frontrunner in several categories. They’re not alone. Other titles left out of the running include “Blue Valentine,” “Biutiful,” “Another Year,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Never Let Me Go” and “The Ghost Writer.”
But the screenplay for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” made the cut. Thank God.

Don't expect to see Winter's Bone, King's Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon nominated for the WGA Awards. Other films missing from the WGA ballot include Biutiful, The Ghost Writer, Nowhere Boy, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and The Way Back. Of the animated feature films, Zack Snyder's Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole passed, while more highly acclaimed movies like Pixar's Toy Story 3 and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon were deemed ineligible. To be eligible for the group's annual awards, the Writers Guild of America requires that screenplays be produced under WGA jurisdiction and formally submitted for consideration. This year, 76 films qualified -- 43 original screenplays and 33 adapted. A few of the quality scripts that didn't meet the qualifications: Another Year, Biutiful, Blue Valentine, The Ghost Writer, The King's Speech, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Toy Story 3, Winter's Bone. The WGA winners have been a reliable predictor of the Oscars: the winners have matched up 11 of the last 16 years in both the original and adapted categories. To my eyes, The King's Speech is a lock for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination and the favorite to win. So we'll see how that relationship holds this year. Hit the jump for the full list of eligible screenplays. Via Variety: Original Screenplay All Good Things Black Swan Brooklyn's Finest Burlesque Casino Jack City Island...

So far I've collected six separate 2010 compilation videos looking back at the this year's collection of films. To the best of my knowledge, these six videos include clips from 303 films and together they total 34:34. I have included the complete list of films on the second page if you are interested. Let me know if I'm missing any, but I think it's pretty safe to say if you liked a film in 2010 one of these following videos will feature it.
So, have a watch and leave your thoughts on which one is your favorite in the comments below and if you find another one online that I should add to the collection shoot me an email.

Even if you’re a jaded movie buff who hates year end schmaltz, the recap should pluck your heartstrings. So many great and touching moments this year, it’s enough to make you wonder how the Golden Globes managed to totally blow their nominations.
But we digress. Check out the video after the jump.

Now that we're about two weeks till the end of 2010, the film industry will be looking back to figure out the best movies of the year and will pick winners during the many awards shows. Today, we have a video that captures 2010 pretty well by showing scenes from the year's 270 films, including some that have yet to hit theaters. There will likely be plenty more of these montages in the next few weeks, but the video is definitely one of the better ones that I have seen. Check out the six-minute video below, in addition to a full list of all the films that were used. Questions: How many of the films listed did you actually see in full? Video: Films in Order of Appearance: 1. Iron Man 2 2. The Social Network 3. Saw 3D 4. Tron: Legacy 5. Never Let Me Go 6. Legion 7. The Book of Eli 8. Easy A 9. The Runaways 10. Farewell 11. It's getting closer and closer to the end of the year, and we've already seen a couple top 10 lists and critic choice awards announced. Since we began posting "best of the year" video montages a few years back, it seems a lot of new wannabe video editors have emerged. Maybe the software has become cheaper or more accessible, or maybe the coverage on sites like /Film and other movie blogs garnered interest in the task. Last year I received a dozen or so best of videos, most of them were not anything we would share on the site. I think we posted three in total last year, two of which were created by video editors we've featured in previous years [1]. Today I was sent the first "best of 2010" video montage of the season, from a video editor named Gen I. I'll admit that while I was expecting the worst, I came out pleasantly surprised.

Rarely does a drama come along with so much emotionally raw resonance that moviegoers feel each and every cinematic pang as if the on-screen tragedy were actually happening to them.Based on the novel of the same title by Karen Kingsbury, "Like Dandelion Dust" is a painfully emotional roller-coaster ride through a parent's worst nightmare. Not afraid to tackle a tricky topic, the movie breaks viewers' hearts with a generally impossible dilemma then inspires them with a demonstration of faith's unending power.Mira Sorvino stars as Wendy Porter, a woman whose husband Rip ...

She may be a veteran mother-of-three, but Mira Sorvino will forever try to live up to her own mother’s parenting example.
“My mother was a full-time stay-at-home mom, so I find it really, really guilt-making when I go and work,” the Like Dandelion Dust actress, 43, reveals in the Fall issue of Mom.
“She used to do treasure hunts in the back yard and write clues and hide things in trees and she made her own piñatas — and she’s not Mexican … I don’t always measure up to her standard, but I try.”

A very busy, yet quiet, weekend at cinemas. West Acres 14 gets hit with four films: Wes Craven horror flick, My Soul To Take 3D, horse bio-pic (I can't believe I actually just typed that phrase) Secretariat, adoption drama Like Dandelion Dust, and mental hospital comedy, Its Kind of a Funny Story. At Century 10, Life As We Know It, the first romantic comedy in quite awhile that doesn't look Completely uninteresting and awful. Thanks to the Fargo Theatre, we can see Micmacs, the new film from my favorite French director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, City of Lost Children). Also,...

Like Dandelion Dust is a film based on a Karen Kingsbury novel. It is a harrowing tale about an adoptive couple's worst nightmare. This occurs when the birth parents try to take back their child from the couple who is raising him. This movie explores that situation in depth and the drama is highlighted by superb performances by Barry Pepper and Mira Sorvino. Jack and Molly Campbell (Cole Hauser and Kate Levering) have had their adopted son Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton) since he was a tiny infant. He is now seven years old and is a happy, well adjusted child. His birth mother Wendy (Sorvino) is married to Rip Porter (Pepper) who has been in jail for seven years, and is now being released. Rip had not known Wendy was pregnant and that she had a child. When he finds out, he...

This weekend offers several wide releases which cater to different audiences, along with a few anticipated films in limited release. Perhaps the most anticipated film out of the wide releases is Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Oliver Stone's long-awaited follow-up to his 1987 original. While it's generated mixed reviews, the film boasts a great cast and has been on people's radar since it debuted at Cannes earlier this year. Also opening is the Zack Snyder animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, which appears to be a Lord of the Rings style epic for kids. Rounding out the wide releases is the chick flick You Again, starring Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Sigourney Weaver. The festival favorite Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds opens in limited release as well as the public school documentary Waiting for Superman. Lastly, Woody Allen's latest film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger...

I know almost no thing about author Karen Kingsbury, but apparently she's a New York Times bestselling author with a huge following. But I have seen a film which releases tomorrow that is based on one of her books and it's a film you don't want to miss. Produced by Bobby Downes whose previous credits included the gritty Eric Roberts film Mercy Streets, Like Dandelion Dust stars Mira Sorvino in a powerful role that centers on a custody battle that is fought over a little boy. It's a powerful and moving film that you don't want to miss. ...

Warning: Do not get between Mira Sorvino and her kids.
The actress says she’d do just about anything to protect her three little ones — daughter Mattea, 5½, and sons Johnny, 4, and Holden, 15 months — with husband Christopher Backus.
“I would die for my children. I would kill for my children if someone were trying to hurt them,” the actress, who plays a mother in her new film Like Dandelion Dust, tells People.
“I have become a very fierce mama bear, and I’d lay down my life in a heartbeat if it could save theirs.”

Paris -- Harrison Ford, Robin Wright Penn and Andy Garcia are among the famous faces set for career tributes during the star-spangled 35th edition of the Deauville Festival of American Cinema.
Ford will be the guest of honor at Deauville, which kicks off on Sept. 4 in the Normandy seaside town. The fest also plans homages to Garcia, whose film "City Island" from Raymond de Felitta will screen at the fest, and Wright Penn, whose "Private Lives of Pippa Lee" will unspool out of competition.
Deauville also will pay homage to the late director-producer Robert Aldrich and will honor the careers of directors-screenwriters-producers David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker.
Nine films will compete for the event's top prizes, four of which are first features, namely Oren Moverman's "The Messenger," Cary Joji Fukunaga's "Sin Nombre," Daniel Davila's "Harrison, Montgomery" and Sophie Barthes' "Cold Souls" starring Paul Giamatti and Emily Watson.

On Friday night, the Las Vegas Film Festival hosted Barry Pepper. The festival gave him a celebrity tribute following his film, "Like Dandelion Dust".
Pepper's performance as a rough, factory-working father recently released from prison was described by Variety magazine as "head turning." Early buzz on the film includes awards at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and the Sedona International Film Festival where it won Best Feature.
More than 100 films and documentaries premiered at the Eastside Cannery in Boulder City from April 9 to Easter Sunday. The festival drew more locals from Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City than actors and actresses who were in the films.
The big event for Friday and Saturday, though, was the premiere of the new Robert Pattinson film "How to Be." Friday, the festival had two showings of the film, and due to its popularity, they added a third showing on Saturday.

- This past weekend I had the chance to attend one of the more beautiful settings for a film fest. The Sonoma Film Festival offers such a splendid backdrop that makes it difficult to trade it, and the tasty food and delicious wines donated by local restaurants and wineries in for, a darkened environment to watch a slate of films. With exceptions such as the Korean film "Story of Wine" which almost feels tailor made for the festival, the festival's film selections feels catered towards a local, discerning audience who probably take their movies as seriously as they do about making wine. The friendly and patient audience had a chance to indulge in a selection of local shorts, international features and the highlight of the 12th festival edition was a tribute to Hollywood legend Bruce Willis would have preferred to be honoured as a great "Line Memorizer" rather than accepting
