A Max original, The Pitt is a medical drama that chronicles one 15-hour shift in the emergency room of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Gritty and authentic, each episode in the show covers a single hour of the shift beginning at seven in the morning. With medical students and interns in tow on their very first day, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), the show’s senior attending, navigates the organized chaos that’s become synonymous with working in the ER.
A realistic representation of medical personnel on the frontlines, the series isn’t made for those with a queasy stomach. At any given moment, viewers could witness a simple flesh wound or the inside of someone’s chest cavity. It is an ER after all. Given the scope of the series, The Pitt has an extensive cast, which audiences might recognize from other television shows and movies. Below are the...

As a kid, I adored my grandfather. I knew he loved chocolate (the dark kind) and hated ketchup. I knew he enjoyed a good pun and could speak seven languages — around the dinner table it was French. I knew his Steinway was his happy place, and that he made many of the things in his home by hand (like the curtains that hung in his living room, woven on a loom he built in his basement).
What I didn’t know about my grandfather was that he grew up one of five siblings in a town in central Poland called Radom; or that he was raised in the Jewish faith; or that he, his parents and his siblings were Holocaust survivors. These were truths I learned at 15, a year after he died, thanks to a high school English assignment and an interview with my grandmother Caroline.
The discovery sparked a lot of questions.

Even with all the preparation that Joey King did for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” nothing could have prepared her for meeting the descendants of the Kurc family. Anna, the daughter of King’s character, showed up on set while filming was happening in Malaga, Spain. “It was this very emotional, beautiful moment. The first thing she said to me when she me, she outstretched her arms and she looked at me and she said, ‘Mama,’” she reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The gesture brought tears to King’s eyes. “She had not met me yet, hasn’t seen any of the work I’ve done to portray her mother yet, yet is here giving me this warm embrace and confidence that says, ‘Yes, you are playing my mother and I’m so excited.’ It just felt like a real big green light for me.

The Kurc family's incredible survival during WWII is depicted with strong emotional impact by the cast of We Were The Lucky Ones. The production team effectively recreates different locations during WWII, adding depth to the family's story. From Lodz to Casablanca and Rio, the Kurcs' journey showcases resilience and eventual reunification.
Hulu’s We Were The Lucky Ones tells a heartbreaking tale of the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family separated by World War II, taking them to many locations across the map. Based on the eponymous novel by Georgia Hunter, this drama miniseries follows the experiences of the close-knit Kurc family, who have a home and business in Radom prior to the war. When the war breaks out, the family is torn apart and sent to all ends of the world.

As of Episode 4, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is still in the midst of the Nazi domination of Europe. But the Hulu limited series has already displayed a preference for swerving away from the expected tropes of the period. It’s telling a World War II saga that features no battlefields and a chronicle of Jewish resistance that is more about forging and smuggling than about killing Nazis.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” is all the better for showing the audience new kinds of hardships and new avenues for survival, too. It shines when dramatic moments feel specific to the Kurcs, the Polish Jewish family the show follows as the war scatters them across Europe and even further afield, as opposed to the kinds of war imagery that, given the number of WWII dramas each year, can appear standard issue.

After twelve years of continuous zombie mayhem, The Walking Dead aired its final episode in November 2022. When it first aired, The Walking Dead was a phenomenon on par with Game of Thrones. However, The Walking Dead saw a dip in storytelling quality and was marred by some truly head-scratching decisions. Although it managed to dig itself out of that hole with the Whisperers storyline, the damage was done during the highly anticipated Saviors storyline, which was beloved by comic readers.
While The Walking Dead managed a return to form, despite the lack of Rick Grimes throughout the final seasons, there was nonetheless a period of time in which the show struggled immensely. This is most easily evident by a sharp decline in scores on IMDb.

For fans of World War II period dramas and the original "Percy Jackson" films, I have incredible news. The limited series "We Were the Lucky Ones" is coming to Disney's newly-purchased Hulu very soon, and it looks like it's going to be worth the wait.
The show is "inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive and reunite," according to the official synopsis. "The series demonstrates how in the face of the 20th century's darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive. The series is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds."
It is adapted from a New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by Georgia Hunter, a 46-year-old Jewish-American author. Her book is based on the true story of her family's survival in the Holocaust. Although the...

Exclusive: Comedic multi-hyphenate Julio Torres (A24’s Problemista) has struck a deal with Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway, non-profit theater in NYC, that will see them partner to identify, develop, and commission full-length projects from early-career comedy artists.
The collaboration further expands Ars Nova’s two-decade commitment to new comedy at a time when support systems for NYC-based artists have decreased. Under the partnership, Torres and Ars Nova will look to provide comedians with opportunities for development and production outside of the traditional model of sketch shows and 10-minute sets. They’ll offer funding up front to create brand new, uniquely theatrical shows, while providing mentorship and development resources to the artists involved, the first set for a commission being Ars Nova Vision Residency Alum River L. Ramirez. Others will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the alliance, Torres will return to the Ars Nova stage on October 26 to host Showgasm.

Few directors boast the consistent excellence of German auteur Christian Petzold. The puckish filmmaker got on Zoom from New York to unwind some of the surprises in Berlin’s Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize winner “Afire,” his tenth feature and third to star Paula Beer.
It started out being called “The Lucky Ones.” “I love this title,” he told IndieWire during a recent interview. “But it was forbidden, because there was a wave of copyright problems.” When he came up with “The Red Sky,” referring to the film’s wildfire encroaching on his trio of Baltic Sea vacationers, “This was also forbidden for use. They said the word ‘afire’ and I said, ‘it sounds good.'”
Petzold was working on adapting a dystopian novel during the pandemic, but when he contracted Covid, he put it aside. “To erase-delete, to delete it out of my mind, this was the hard work on ‘Afire,...

Rachel McAdams had been anointed Hollywood's latest "It Girl" when she was tapped to grace the cover of Vanity Fair's 2006 Oscar issue alongside Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. She was coming off a string of critical and commercial successes in "Mean Girls," "The Notebook," "Red Eye" and "The Family Stone," and appeared to be on the cusp of superstardom. But when McAdams learned, upon arriving at the Tom Ford photoshoot, that she was expected to pose nude, she walked, promptly fired her publicist (who'd failed to inform her of the shoot's parameters), and pressed the pause button on her film career.
Prior to the #MeToo revolution, firing up double rockets at the exploitative Hollywood movie star machine was considered career suicide. This was how women got smeared with the "difficult" label. McAdams, however, persevered and has established herself as one of the most brilliantly unpredictable actors of her generation. She's...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 12, “The Lucky Ones.”] In this week’s The Walking Dead, we learn a little more about why Maggie (Lauren Cohan) seemed to be at odds with her old pal Daryl (Norman Reedus) and the Commonwealth in the midseason premiere’s final minutes. Whether or not she should be is perhaps another question entirely — simply put, while folks in Ohio are thriving, Maggie’s just surviving. Barely. We also learn Max’s (Margot Bingham) side of the story with the whole Eugene (Josh McDermitt) debacle, and Ezekiel (Khary Payton) gets called in for surgery. Here’s how it happens. Josh Stringer/AMC Commonwealth leader Pamela Milton (Laila Robins), Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton), military leader Mercer (Michael James Shaw) and Daryl, along with a group of soldiers, all head for Alexandria and its surrounding communities. It’s Lance’s aim to show Pamela what the Commonwealth would...

Maggie Rhee is a woman of many talents, and The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 12 had them all on display.
Maggie spent years away from her friends and the communities they've called home for years, and a part of her thinks the best foot forward is to restore the Hilltop to its former glory.
In theory, it's a tough task, especially when you consider that the Kingdom has already fallen, and Alexandria wasn't far from it when Eugene, Lance, and the Commonwealth soldiers showed up.
The truth is, all of these characters have been too trusting of the Commonwealth, and it's becoming clear that there's more going on behind the scenes than our heroes are privy to.
Lance is an intriguing figure in the narrative. We know he's been scheming every step of the way and is desperate for any semblance of power he can get.
He likes to manipulate people into doing his bidding,...

The story follows Havens, a high school drop-out, who is incarcerated and while in solitary confinement, developed an unlikely passion for number theory. Against all odds, he pioneered a new branch of mathematics that stunned the world. Havens still has 15 years left of his 25-year murder sentence.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

“The Launch,” Big Machine Records President/CEO Scott Borchetta’s singing competition on Canadian Television (CTV), is getting a second season, having landed an exclusive worldwide distribution deal with Sony Pictures Television (Spt). The show is set to begin filming in Toronto this coming Fall for the 2018-19 season.
After just one season on the air, the show has seen success from its graduates the likes of which most reality competition shows strive for: six of the series’ singles have seen major traction, including four No. 1 songs on iTunes Canada: Poesy’s “Soldier of Love,” Logan Staats’ “The Lucky Ones,” Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine’s “Ain’t Easy,” which was recently certified platinum, and The Static Shift’s “Wide Awake.”
That success, Borchetta tells Variety, is validation that “we might really have something here.”

Cost of Living and School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play tied for Best Play and Kpop captured Best Musical at the 33rd annual Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway.

Suzanne Somers may have found fame as the ditzy Chrissy Snow in Three’s Company, but in her new book, she reveals a life filled with difficulty — and the terror she felt when she thought she was going to be raped while on a remote photo shoot in Mexico in the 1970s.
“I went down to lie by the pool, and all of a sudden a creepy guy was there,” the 71-year-old actress told People when discussing her book, Two’s Company: A Fifty-Year Romance with Lessons Learned in Love, Life & Business, which is exclusively excerpted in this week’s issue of People.

The joke between me and my Sundance roommate/colleague was that every review and write-up would contain the phrase “In the age of Trump.” Another phrase to watch out for is “now more than ever,” spoken verbatim twice during this year’s Sundance acceptance speeches. The proposition that independent film will “lead the resistance” against Our 45th President is a dubious one: I don’t remember The Lucky Ones or In the Valley of Elah helping anything in particular. The repeated invocation of certain dead phrases to summon up a spell against the darkness inevitably and a bit boringly brings to mind Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language,” […]...

Last week, Universal Pictures unveiled new details about their Universal Monsters Shared Universe, which will officially kick off in 2017 with the Untitled Mummy Reboot. The end credits scene in last year's Dracula Untold served as a "prologue" to this universe. One of the several other projects in development at Universal is a remake of Bride of Frankenstein, with a report from The Hollywood Reporter revealing that the studio is eyeing Angelina Jolie to star as the title character. With Universal financing her latest directorial effort, By the Sea, the actress may be more inclined to star in Bride of Frankenstein, to return the favor for By the Sea, which has tanked at the box office, earning just $313,000 after two weeks in theaters.

Though it has died a very quick death at the box-office, Universal's low-budget relationship drama and vanity project "By the Sea" may have been part of a strategy to lure that film's star and director Angelina Jolie to one of its tentpoles.
THR reports that the distributor apparently greenlit 'Sea' as they are seeking Jolie to headline their remake of 1935's "The Bride of Frankenstein". Elsa Lanchester starred s the famous bride in the original film.
First announced six years ago, Brian Grazer remains onboard as producer but there's no word if "Divergent" and "Limitless" director Neil Burger still intends to helm from a script he co-wrote with Dirk Wittenborn ("The Lucky Ones") .
Also not clear, but likely, is that 'Bride' is a part of Universal's intention to integrate reboots of its classic monster movies into a shared cinematic universe under the control of writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

Being an active member of the WWE roster isn’t the easiest job in the world. Think of the travel, the time spent away from family, the injuries picked up along the way. The lucky ones who make it to the top of the game generally put in the most time and do the most miles. But people can’t do it forever.
And while some can’t get enough and stay active for far longer than they should, there’s a sensible few who have turned their back on the business in their prime – either because they’ve had to – or because there’s something else in the pipeline. The latest case in point came at the start of April, where a certain WWE Diva announced her retirement from in-ring competition.
But Aj Lee isn’t the only one to explore other ventures whilst at the top.

Divergent director Neil Burger has signed on to take the helm for Chockstone Pictures' adaptation All the Old Knives.
The story, based on Olen Steinhauer's novel of the same name, centers on two former lovers, Henry, a current CIA agent in Vienna, and Celia, who retired five years ago, who reunite for dinner in the idyllic town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The conversation eventually shifts to the hijacking of Royal Jordianian Flight 127, which ended with every passenger on board dying, and is considered the Vienna station's greatest failure to date. As the dinner progresses, it becomes clear that one of them won't make it out alive.
Here's what director Neil Burger had to say about Olen Steinhauer's novel:
"Olen Steinhauer has written a fantastic, suspenseful, sophisticated drama set in the world of the CIA. As a director, I love that it's a tightly woven puzzle, a mystery involving counter-terrorism...

Kevin Garvey just can’t catch a break. As far as TV protagonists go, The Leftovers‘ tattooed, bleary-eyed, possibly insane police chief is one of the most embattled. Even in the first episode, he was forced to go through the soul-crushing ordeal of gunning down dogs shortly after watching one get blown away in front of him. Since then, Kevin has been under tremendous pressure in every area of his life.
At home, he has to care for his emotionally damaged daughter Jill and toe the line with her flirtatious best friend Aimee. At work, he’s both the scapegoat for every terrible thing that happens and seemingly the only one capable of cleaning up Mapleton’s messes (the only other cops we’ve seen so far on The Leftovers have been either donut-dunking blowhards or unfortunately inept schlubs). Quickly, the group weeds out potential survivors based solely on the careers. Mechanics, carpenters, and scientists are all in, while artists of any kind are out.
