Always a delight on TV and film, Oscar-nominated actor Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) is back on the small screen with another gripping series — this time on Apple TV+. In Dope Thief, his ever-conflicted character Ray is a new kind of troublemaker, posing as a DEA agent to infiltrate drug dens for the sake of some quick cash. Sounds like trouble indeed — one has to wonder what Henry's beloved Atlanta character "Paper Boi" would feel about such delinquency. Nonetheless, Ray can be warmhearted and vulnerable, and MovieWeb recently caught up with Henry to learn more about what he hopes fans will take away from his all-new lead character.
"I hope that viewers are entertained and truly locked in and intrigued by seeing characters like this exist on their television screen, because I haven't really seen it in this way," Henry told us. "And so what I hope the takeaway is,...

Plot: Based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, “Dope Thief” follows long-time Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside, only to have their small-time grift become a life-and-death enterprise, as they unwittingly reveal and unravel the biggest hidden narcotics corridor on the Eastern seaboard.
Review: The definition of what constitutes a “crime drama” has evolved over the years as more nuanced takes on the subject matter have given us fantastic projects ranging from The Wire on the small screen to The Town on the big screen. Peter Craig, the co-writer of Ben Affleck’s The Town and The Batman, Gladiator II, Bad Boys For Life, and Top Gun: Maverick, knows a little about delivering portraits of criminals who are more than the crimes they perpetrate. Adapting Dennis Tafoya’s 2009 novel, Dope Thief takes a unique series of...

The following contains spoilers for Dope Thief Season 1, Episode 1 & 2, streaming Friday, Mar. 14 on Apple TV+.
Dope Thief comes in locked and loaded, laying out this Apple original in the opening minutes. A low-rent location in downtown Philadelphia is where audiences first meet best friends Ray and Manny. Moments later, Ridley Scott gets down to adapting the novel by Dennis Tafoya and puts Brian Tyree Henry front and center. Best known for Atlanta and both Spider-Verse movies, Dope Thief instantly showcases Henry's talents. He made a mark in Eternals, held his own against Brad Pitt in Bullet Train, and was Oscar-nominated for Causeway, so by this point, Brian Tyree Henry should be a big star.
In this low-key relationship drama, creator Peter Craig unpacks some complicated connections early on. Fans of Ben Affleck’s second feature, The Town, will notice many of those hallmarks in Dope Thief: fractured relationships...

Jennifer Lawrence Nearly Turned Down Hunger Games Role ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
It’s hard to imagine The Hunger Games without Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, but the Oscar-winning star almost walked away from the role that defined her career. In a candid chat with USA Today, Lawrence admitted, “It’s so huge. It’s why I almost didn’t take the movie.”
At just 21, Lawrence felt the weight of stepping into Katniss’s boots. “It’s a character that can very easily overpower the rest of my characters,” she explained, worried about being typecast. She wasn’t sure she could handle the pressure after having only done a handful of movies. But eventually, the significance of the role won her over. “It’s such an awesome thing to be part of something that speaks to so many young kids about something that matters,” she said.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week’s topic: Best Supporting Actress, where a new contender is ascendant.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! I feel like this week’s column might be… popular. “Wicked” is out in theaters now, riding a wave of pre-release hype that hasn’t been seen in these parts since “Barbie.” Fans are fanning, stans are stanning, and I’ve got Ariana Grande winning Best Supporting Actress. We knew this would happen once you planted the seed, “Inception”-style, that typical Best Supporting Actress winners from musicals are more like Grande’s performance than what Zoe Saldaña does in “Emilia Pérez.” So, of course, I’ve made the swap — Ariana fans, tweet at me! — and while I’m always reactionary, it seems I’m not alone.

Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson are starring in Die, My Love together in 2025, which will mark the first time the two actors share the screen. Lawrence and Pattinson are two of the most acclaimed actors of the last decade and are usually quite selective with their film roles. Lawrence has starred in celebrated films such as Silver Linings Playbook and Causeway, whereas Pattinson has appeared in Good Time and The Lighthouse. Therefore, their involvement in Die, My Love suggests that the film is one to look out for in 2025.
The upcoming Die, My Love also marks the return of director Lynne Ramsay after seven years. She previously directed Joaquin Phoenix in the critically acclaimed 2017 film You Were Never Really Here, so it will be great to see her work with two more incredible actors in Lawrence and Pattinson. Real cinephiles know that Letterboxd, where you can log movies you've watched and discuss them, is the best social media site, and one of the best things Letterboxd does is ask celebrities to list their four favorite movies. Before the release of her romantic comedy "No Hard Feelings," Letterboxd caught up with Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence to ask about her four favorite movies, and the entire concept seemed to deeply stress her out.
"Oh my god, that is so much pressure, because I'm really bad at remembering the titles," Lawrence exclaimed in the YouTube short before remembering the titles of three different movies. "I mean, 'Jurassic Park,'" she began, shouting out Steven Spielberg's beloved science fiction adventure flick, before naming Renée Zellweger's romantic comedy "Bridget Jones's Diary" next. While Jennifer Lawrence has been under the radar in the recent past, the actress was the ‘it girl’ of Hollywood in the 2010s as she starred in multiple acclaimed films and blockbusters. Following in the footsteps of Oscar-nominated boxing coaches like Paul Giamatti in “Cinderella Man” and Burgess Meredith in “Rocky,” Brian Tyree Henry could make another trip to the Oscars for his standout role as Jason Crutchfield in the uplifting and inspirational drama “The Fire Inside.” Henry portrays the coach who trains Claressa Shields, the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing.
The film, produced by Amazon MGM, made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday afternoon before a sold-out crowd. Debut director Rachel Morrison, who made history as the first woman nominated for an Academy Award for cinematography with “Mudbound” (2017), introduced the film. She later joined a post-screening Q&a alongside producer Elishia Holmes, writer and producer Barry Jenkins, and stars Ryan Destiny and Henry. Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to star in and produce a new movie called “Why Don’t You Love Me?” based on a graphic novel of the same name. This dark comedy is being made by A24, the same studio behind many of Lawrence’s most interesting films.
The story follows a married couple, Claire and Mark, who seem pretty miserable. As their relationship falls apart, strange things start happening that make them question what’s really going on. The book it’s adapted from sounds nuts – it’s described as a black comedy about marriage, drinking, depression, and missed chances in life. So the movie is sure to be equally weird and surprising.
The screenplay is being written by Robert Funke, known for the creepy show “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.” Other big names producing include Ari Aster, who directed the seriously strange movies “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,...

Jennifer Lawrence is teaming up once again with A24 for a movie adaptation of “Why Don’t You Love Me?,” the darkly comedic 2023 graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey.
Robert Funke (“On Becoming a God in Central Florida”) is writing the screenplay, as the search for a director is underway. Lawrence is also a producer alongside Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver; Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Emily Hildner of Square Peg are also on board. Rainey executive produces.
“Why Don’t You Love Me?” follows a miserable couple, Claire and Mark, struggling through their marriage while “feeling like something is not quite right in their reality,” teases A24. The graphic novel has been described as a “pitch-black comedy about marriage, alcoholism, depression and mourning lost opportunities,” with surprising twists along the way.

After dabbling in comedy with “No Hard Feelings,” Jennifer Lawrence is tapping back into her funny bone with a new project with A24.
Lawrence will star in and produce “Why Don’t You Love Me?” which is based on a graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey published in 2023. The logline is merely that Lawrence will star as one half of a couple struggling through their marriage while feeling like something is not quite right in their reality.
But Rainey’s book is described as a science-fiction dark comedy about marriage, alcoholism, and depression in which the couple realizes this unhappy marriage is not the life they chose for themselves upon hearing news of an impending nuclear war on the radio. Lawrence’s character is a chain-smoking stalker and couch potato who spends the bulk of her time in a bathrobe, and both she and her husband wonder if this life...

As random and arbitrary as Netflix's Top 10 can appear, it starts to become more predictable upon closer inspection. Like the media rental stores of ancient times (which were essentially the streaming services of their epoch), new Netflix originals inevitably rank high before dwindling off in the same way that Blockbusters would initially stock their shelves with roughly 10,000 copies of the latest tentpole. Along those same lines, viewers frequently play catchup right before a show returns by marathoning its previous season(s), which is how a cult Syfy comedy series like "Resident Alien" ends up charting seemingly out of the blue.
Then there are the under-the-radar titles that find their way onto Netflix only to be discovered anew by its users, much like a customer perusing the aisles of their local video rental shop and stumbling upon some previously ignored movie featuring one of their favorite actors. So it is...

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.
Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). Now it has added a bouquet of older film favorites to the mix, including popular and award-winning movies like “Titanic,” “300,” “Argo,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The Bodyguard,” “Jurassic World,” “Gravity,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Kill Bill” Volume 1 and 2, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the original 2004 “Mean Girls” and “Zoolander.”
The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

The move could signal a shift in strategy by Apple to finally incorporate more library titles into its catalog.
Is Apple TV+ finally getting non-original titles in its streaming library? Yes, at least temporarily, at any rate, as the streamer has added a total of 51 movies to its streaming catalog, spanning every genre and including some true blockbusters. Apple stresses that these titles will only be available for a limited time, but it could be providing a glimpse into its own future with the additions. Having long focused on high-quality originals without the studio archives or licensing library of its competitors, Apple V+ has been a somewhat different type of streamer since it launched in November 2019.

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

Kumail Nanjiani has opened up about the mental toll of promoting Chloé Zhao’s Marvel movie, Eternals, amidst negative reviews, revealing that it resulted in him seeking counseling.
“The reviews were really bad,” Nanjiani remembered, during an appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. “I was too aware of it. I was reading every review [and] checking too much.”
Unfortunately, Marvel expected the movie would be well-reviewed and lifted the embargo early, so Nanjiani and his castmates were sent on “a big global tour” to coincide with anticipated positive press. This meant the actors were thrown right in the thick of promoting the first MCU film to be certified rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.
By Nanjiani’s estimation, there was “some weird soup in the atmosphere” for why Eternals got panned, and “not very much of it has to do with the actual quality of the movie.” Still, the actor took the criticism “really,...

Seven out of the 20 acting Oscar nominees across Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor were represented this year by people of color. For all of them — Lily Gladstone, Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, America Ferrera, Colman Domingo, Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright — it’s their first career Oscar nomination.
That ties with the same number of diverse acting nominees across acting categories at last year’s Oscars, however it’s down from the nine nominees of color in 2020.
Last year those actors of diverse backgrounds counted Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Supporting Actor (the latter won); Ana de Armas for Blonde and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Actress (the latter won), and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Angela Bassett from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,...

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.
