European sales, production and finance company mk2 films has announced a multi-year slate financing deal with investment fund manager Ipr.Vc, which will provide “significant financial backing for a slate of future projects”.

The French firm did not divulge details of the value of the deal or how many projects it was projected to include, but said Ipr.Vc’s financial support would enable it to deliver a robust slate of projects and further strengthen “its status as a leading force in auteur-driven cinema”.

The globe-spanning mystery, which filmed across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, tells the story of Ruja Ignatova, the founder of fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme OneCoin and the only woman on the FBI’s top 10 Most Wanted list.

“Only one fraudster has made both the FBI and Interpol’s 2022 Most Wanted lists,” reads the synopsis. “After exploiting the cryptocurrency boom in ‘one of the biggest scams in history’, Ruja Ignatova disappeared without a trace – along with billions of dollars. And now the world wants to know where she is.”

The consummate “Real Housewives” franchise binger and frequent “Wwhl” guest will lead a film in development for Apple Original Films and A24 called “The Wives” that will feature a “Housewives” inspired murder, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Much like Netflix’s “Knives Out” ensemble whodunit, “The Wives” will focus on elite housewives who may or may not have a murderer among them, according to Variety, which first reported the news. Specific plot details are being kept under wraps.

The feature will be written by Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley, who both wrote the Pulitzer Prize finalist play “Circle Jerk.”

“The Wives” will be produced by Jeremy O. Harris (“Zola,” “Slave Play”) and Josh Godfrey under their bb2 banner. Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi are also producing for their banner Excellent Cadaver.

Landing on top of a competitive situation, Apple has acquired murder mystery package The Wives, which has Lawrence attached to star and produce.

Joining Lawrence on the producing team is Justine Ciarrocchi, her partner at the duo’s Excellent Cadaver production banner, as well as Tony and Independent Spirit Award nominee Jeremy O. Harris (Zola, Slave Play) and Josh Godfrey. The latter two will produce under their bb2 banner.

Henry, an Oscar, Emmy and Tony award nominee, has recent credits like Warner Brothers’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Causeway, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination, and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The Oscar, Emmy and Tony nominee joins Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the coming-of-age musical, set in the summer of 1977 at Virginia Beach and inspired by Atlantis Apartments, Williams’ childhood neighborhood.

Gondry is set to direct the project based on a script by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson. Williams and Mimi Valdés will produce through I Am Other and Gil Netter will produce through Gil Netter Productions.

Universal’s senior vice president of production development Ryan Jones and Christine Sun, director of production development, will oversee the project for the studio.

Henry starred on Donald Glover’s acclaimed series “Atlanta” for four seasons as Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance. He also scored a supporting actor Oscar nomination for the 2022 film “Causeway” opposite Jennifer Lawrence.

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.

The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.

Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.

“A Real Pain”

One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.

Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

The move could signal a shift in strategy by Apple to finally incorporate more library titles into its catalog.

Is Apple TV+ finally getting non-original titles in its streaming library? Yes, at least temporarily, at any rate, as the streamer has added a total of 51 movies to its streaming catalog, spanning every genre and including some true blockbusters. Apple stresses that these titles will only be available for a limited time, but it could be providing a glimpse into its own future with the additions. Having long focused on high-quality originals without the studio archives or licensing library of its competitors, Apple V+ has been a somewhat different type of streamer since it launched in November 2019.

Kumail Nanjiani has opened up about the mental toll of promoting Chloé Zhao’s Marvel movie, Eternals, amidst negative reviews, revealing that it resulted in him seeking counseling.

“The reviews were really bad,” Nanjiani remembered, during an appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. “I was too aware of it. I was reading every review [and] checking too much.”

Unfortunately, Marvel expected the movie would be well-reviewed and lifted the embargo early, so Nanjiani and his castmates were sent on “a big global tour” to coincide with anticipated positive press.
