Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
I’ll be blunt: it wasn’t a good year for films, or at least for me it wasn’t. The following ten films and five honorable mentions, while fine to very good, represent a step down from what 2023 offered. Part of this is due to an industry impacted by two strikes in 2023 that cancelled or postponed many productions. Part of it is personal, in that I couldn’t see as many films as I’d like in 2024. And part of it has to do with the large amount of mediocrity I did see, of films that lacked risk and imagination. A lot of movies preferred to ape their influences rather than build off of them, and in turn coddled viewers with familiarity. By the end of...

While there are plenty of massively popular and world-renowned anime titles out there, both historical and more modern, Google's new Search Playground game reveals the engine's most-searched anime of all time: Naruto.
Like a Where's Wally?/Where's Waldo? spinoff, Search Playground provides users with clues to find characters within a large crowd. Google's clue for finding Naruto was, "Hint: The most searched anime is making a splash." An official Google statement makes Naruto's worldwide influence even clearer: "The 'most searched' designation means a person, movement, topic, landmark or moment was searched more than any other in a specific category since Google Trends data first became available globally in 2004." The data spans from Jan. 1, 2004, to Sep. 27, 2023, with data extending to Nov. 10, 2023, in some cases. Countries like China, Iran and North Korea were not accounted for.

Spider-Man is the most searched superhero of the last 25 years, beating out other popular heroes like Batman and Iron Man. Spider-Man has had a controversial couple of decades in comics, with major events like Civil War and One More Day sparking heated fan backlash. Despite controversies and ups and downs, Spider-Man remains a relevant and beloved pop culture figure 61 years after his debut.
In Google's newly released 'Google Doodle' - Google's Most Searched Playground - the search engine showcases its most searched topics in a giant Where's Waldo?-style image. Fans are invited to hunt down figures including Taylor Swift (the most searched songwriter), Pikachu (most searched Pokémon), and Naruto (the most searched anime.) Also in the image is one figure familiar from the MCU, who Google has crowned its "most searched superhero."

And the "Star Wars" news just keeps on coming — which makes sense, considering it's only day one of the Star Wars Celebration taking place in Anaheim, California. While we're learning all sorts of things about the franchise at large and Disney's plans for it in the future, we're also picking up all sorts of cute and fun tidbits, and this one might just be the cutest and the funnest. It seems like director Dave Filoni is playing a casual game of "Where's Waldo?" with us all.

My heart may not have stopped while viewing this delightful, bite-sized series celebrating queer love, but it did its fair share of melting, skipping, and riotous cheering.
Heartstopper is the lustrous TV adaptation of Alice Oseman's YA graphic novel. It follows Charlie and Nick as they navigate the evolution of their friendship into something more, and it's too cute for words, but I'll do my best.
With only eight short episodes, it's an easy-breezy one-night binge.
It is confounding that Heartstopper is not dominating the global Netflix charts. It should be sitting steadfast and pretty at number one, so this is my formal plea to you, reader: stream it!
You ask why? What makes Heartstopper so compelling?
For starters, most of the teens in Heartstopper are actually teens in real life, lending it an authentic quality that many YA shows lack nowadays.

"Apocalypto" is a chase movie from a director whose name was a lightning rod for controversy the year of its release, yet the movie itself has sent people chasing after one controversial little Easter Egg involving the red-and-white-striped character: Waldo, of "Where's Waldo?" fame. Leave it to Mel Gibson to pull a Tyler Durden on moviegoers and splice in a rogue frame of footage among an already disturbing scene.
"Apocalypto" is set during the decline of the Mayan civilization in Mexico around 1502. It follows a tribesman named Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) who sees his village raided and who must race through the jungle to escape his captors and save his...

Tony Hale’s cartoon chicken Archibald is moving from Netflix to Peacock for “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here.”
Netflix ran two seasons of a series titled “Archibald’s Next Big Thing,” which will continue streaming on that platform. This new season — which is technically a new series based on Hale’s feathery character — consists of six episodes, which will launch Feb. 18 on NBCU’s Peacock.
Per “Archibald” studio DreamWorks Animation, “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here” is the next chapter for Archibald Strutter, a chicken who “yes-and’s” his way through life. While his adventures don’t always go as planned, Archibald takes it one step at a time with the help of his three siblings, Sage, Finly and Loy, and his trusty sidekick, Bea.

Patel founded Snipple more than a decade ago and the move into originals represents the realization of a plan that he first mapped out in 2012. Solid narration can make a great series that much better (see: Jane the Virgin), a fact that the creators of Love Island - CBS's most scandalous, summer show - are well aware of. Following in the footsteps of Love Island UK announcer Iain Stirling (whose Scottish accent and good-humored jabs at the reality show's contestants often leave viewers in stitches), television host Matthew Hoffman is serving as the self-proclaimed "Voice of Love Island" this summer - and half of the internet is already wishing Hoffman could narrate their own lives. Before we invite his charming commentary into our own romantic entanglements, though, we should probably get to know Hoffman a bit better: who is Matthew Hoffman, really? Let's find out.

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service set to be available across the U.S. starting July 15, will be available on Google platforms and devices including Android, Android TVs, Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices at launch, the media company announced.
Under the pact, Android and Android TV users will receive complimentary access to Peacock Premium (with ads) through Oct. 15, 2020.
So far, NBCU has announced Peacock deals with Apple and Microsoft’s Xbox — but has not yet clinched deals with the two biggest over-the-top device players, Roku and Amazon Fire TV (which are both holding out on HBO Max).
In April, Peacock’s “early preview” rolled out to Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers at no additional cost.
On July 15, Peacock is set to launch wide in several versions: There’s a free, ad-supported tier featuring with more than 7,500 hours of movies, shows, and programming across news, sports, reality and late night.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Comcast and NBCUniversal are pushing Peacock out of the nest starting Wednesday, April 15, promising to unfurl a rich plume of 15,000-plus hours of streaming content, first for the cable giant’s own TV and internet customers.
Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.
So what’s on the menu? Peacock will include live and on-demand content across current and past TV shows, movies, news, and late night programming, with some live sports once they resume post-pandemic. Most of...
