The data regarding Formula 1 suggests that Netflix might be the perfect partner for the racing league after the 2025 season.
The 2024 Formula 1 season has long passed the finish line, and the green flag has already dropped on the 2025 season. However, as the racing circuit looks toward a new media rights deal, looking back at last year’s viewership data will be incredibly important. As part of its current broadcast agreement in the United States, races appeared on ABC and ESPN channels over the course of the year, but data shows that ratings fell in the U.S. in 2024. However, F1 races continued to improve upon their impressive numbers around the globe. That information could point to an ideal broadcast partner for Formula 1 as it looks past 2025 into the future.
Key Details: Formula 1 races averaged 1.13 million viewers each in 2024. The racing league added more than 90 million new fans around the globe.

Ted Sarandos, the head of Netflix, wonders if the threatened cinema industry might harbour some kind of bias against his company. Hmmm.
Netflix loves statistics. The company thrives on numbers, using its endless reams of data to commission projects, axe projects, determine payouts and see into the future. Okay, maybe not the last one.
But for a company so adept at reading the digital tea leaves that it has rocketed from humble beginnings as a mail-out DVD service to become bigger than any of its famous old rivals, CEO Ted Sandaros seems to be having a little trouble deciphering a rather simple data set.
Netflix has picked up more awards recognition at the Oscars each year for the last three years, and yet still, that top prize of Best Picture eludes the company. Even in the years when it seemed like a shoo-in, such as when Roma or The Power Of The Dog...

Westerns are a movie genre gaining new meaning in the 21st century. By deconstructing old archetypes and redefining the American West, contemporary Westerns welcome a new audience into the transformative power of cinema in historical fiction. The cinematic experience is like nothing else, and there's a reason why movies are able to create a powerful feeling that continually has audiences returning for more. Film industry lovers can indulge in gigantic franchises and more intimate independent features.
A consistent barometer for success is the numbers movies bring in at the box office, but there's still room for plenty of genres that tell different kinds of stories. Westerns have become a bit of a lost art and a type of movie associated with the past, but they're far from dead. Some creative filmmakers know how to get the most out of this classic genre, and there are some incredible modern Westerns for...

With over 300 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix is the biggest name in the world of streaming, but the company is still chasing Hollywood’s top honour: the Oscar for Best Picture. Although Netflix hasn’t won Best Picture, it’s come close several times; in fact, the studio received the most Oscar nominations out of any studio at the recent Academy Awards ceremony.
While speaking with Variety, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos was asked if he’s disappointed that Netflix has yet to win an Oscar for Best Picture. “It’s hard for me to say, ‘Do they have it out for Netflix?’ when we’ve been the most-nominated studio for the past three years,” Sarandos said. “There’s something about [the Academy] — you nominate the movies that you respect and admire, and you vote for best picture for the movie that you love. We have to make a movie that people love.“

It's official — Westerns are in. After a couple of decades when cowboys have seen diminishing returns on the big screen, the classic film genre has been returning in a big way. That is all thanks in part to Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe, but also to some great Western remakes, Kevin Costner's epic Horizon saga, and Oscar-winning films like The Power of the Dog. 2024 was a great year for Westerns, but 2025 is shaping up to be a good one, too, and the upcoming film Day of Reckoning is joining the ranks. The new film stars Billy Zane, Zach Roerig, Cara Jade Myers, Scott Adkins, and Trace Adkins. Directed by Shaun Silva, written by Travis J. Opgenorth, produced by Ali Afshar, Christina Moore, Daniel Aspromonte, and Don Lepore. Esx is bringing the film to theaters on March 28, 2025. Check out the synopsis below:

The full effect of Netflix on the film industry, positive or (more likely) negative, will be reverberating for years to come. But in the short term, they’ve made some undeniably great movies, mostly through the strategy of giving money to great directors and appearing to let them do whatever they want (and supplementing those by acquiring already-great movies from film festivals). That’s how you wind up with The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Hit Man, Roma, The Power of the Dog, Da 5 Bloods, Rebel Ridge and The Killer, among others.
It’s a lineup that smokes most of the major studios, which was presumably the idea: undercut the competition by stealing the film-makers they established and giving them the world. That particular...

Those Ryan Gosling fans hankering to see the Canadian actor in the only Western movie of his career thus far are in luck. The 1998 TV movie Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is free to stream on Amazon Freevee, allowing Gosling fans to see him in an early one-of-a-kind role that flashed his precocious acting talents and led to his A-list Hollywood status.
Well-received enough to spawn a TV series from 1998 to 2000, Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is a romantic comedic western that tracks a trio of cattle ranchers in British Columbia in the 1940s. With a wealth of TV experience from his Young Hercules days, Gosling shines with the charming magnetism he's known for today, crafting a compelling and credible cowboy character. While not a life-changing event, Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is a must-see for Gosling diehards and completists.

It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

After taking home the Oscar for best supporting actress, “Emilia Pérez” star Zoe Saldaña responded to criticism of the film’s portrayal of Mexico, after a journalist shared that it has been “really hurtful for us Mexicans.”
“First of all, I’m very, very sorry that many Mexicans felt offended. That was never our intention. We spoke from a place of love,” she told press in the interview room. “I don’t share your opinion. For me, the heart of this movie was not Mexico. We were making a film about friendship. We were making a film about four women.”
She continued, “These women could have been Russian, could have been Dominican, could have been Black from Detroit, could have been from Israel, could have been from Gaza. And these women are still very universal women that are struggling every day, but trying to survive systemic oppression and trying to find the most authentic voices.

The 97th Academy Awards was a joyous affair, full of big orchestral numbers, celebrity singalongs and a triumphant hosting debut from Conan O’Brien. While “Anora” led the night with five wins, there were several snubs and surprises. Check out our list of the biggest unexpected moments below.
Surprise: Mikey Madison wins over award season darling Demi Moore
Demi Moore’s brave performance in “The Substance” seemed like it was a shoo-in for the best actress statue, given her redemption arc throughout award season and wins at the Globes, SAGs and Critics Choice Awards. Yet Madison’s performance helped “Anora” — which was awarded best picture immediately after her win — lead the night.
Snub: Original Song performances nixed
Some of the most memorable Oscar moments of all time have been the best original song performances, from Diana Ross and Lionel Richie’s 1982 rendition of “Endless Love” to last year’s “I’m Just Ken” spectacular.

Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

Dividing the package into multiple parts could help MLB pull in more revenue, but there are risks involved.
MLB has to choose its next steps very carefully. The league has taken the plunge and opted out of its longstanding broadcast deal with ESPN, a move which will see MLB games disappear from that network following the 2025 season. As it hunts for a new partner for that package of games, MLB executives face the question of whether or not they want to sell it all as one parcel, or if it will break it up into smaller parts in the hopes of potentially attracting streaming services like Netflix.
Key Details: ESPN’s current MLB package includes 30 regular season games, a wild card series, and the Home Run Derby. MLB may be able to sell Netflix more easily on baseball content it can turn into events. ESPN may still be the best...

Award-winning actor Robert De Niro has starred in a long series of critically acclaimed projects. Although his latest title hasn't impressed the critics, it proves interest in anything he does is still high.
De Niro has starred in many films in his career, but his new role in Zero Day comes with a lot of changes. As we prepare for the 97th Academy Awards this weekend, here’s a reminder of the Oscars Cheer Moment, and the weirdest year in the body’s history.
On Valentine’s Day 2022, the American Academy of Motion Pictures unveiled a pair of awards so prestigious they could only be accurately communicated via hashtag.
#OscarsFanFavorite and #OscarsCheerMoment were the latest in a string of attempts from the world’s most famous awards body to stay popular and relevant. The last was in 2018 when, in an attempt to reverse the ratings freefall the ceremony had found itself in over the last decade, Film Academy president John Bailey proposed an official Popular Film category – the first new competition since Best Animated Film in 2001.
Months later, the award was slipped quietly into the organisation’s back pocket, after Academy members and the public at large united to declare the idea a silly one. Making a popular film,...

Uzo Aduba stars as an eccentric investigator navigating secrets, scandals, and 157 suspects.
I love comedy murder mystery TV shows — in fact, I made a list of my favorites you can check out here. Now, Netflix is throwing another hat into the ring by bringing a screwball murder mystery with a presidential twist to its new limited series “The Residence,” premiering Thursday, March 20. From Shonda Rhimes’ production company, the show stars Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, a sharp-witted (if eccentric) detective navigating a murder investigation inside the White House. Based on Kate Andersen Brower’s book, the series pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, mixing scandal, secrets, and high-stakes intrigue involving 157 suspects and one dead body. With an all-star cast and a juicy whodunnit premise, this one will be a binge-worthy ride. Here’s everything you need to know about “The Residence.”

An actor’s physicality is “one of the many strange things” about a career in performance, as Jesse Plemons says, and it’s not a quality he may try to manipulate any time soon.
In a recent profile with The Independent, the star of Netflix’s Zero Day reflected on having gained weight for 2015’s Black Mass, in which he portrayed a real-life mobster, admitting that he’s not sure the toll it took on him would be worth repeating.
“I never imagined getting to play a part like that,” he said. “[Gaining weight] was a decision I made at that age, given that opportunity for that director — and I was playing a real person. I don’t regret it. But it was very easy to put the weight on, and much more difficult taking it off. I don’t know if it’s something I would do again — because it did mess me up a bit.

It appears that ESPN is ready to dump F1 races, which could provide Netflix with a golden opportunity.
It was something of a surprise when ESPN was able to retain Formula 1 broadcast the rights in 2022. Netflix — which airs the wildly popular F1 docuseries “Drive to Survive” — was reportedly very interested in the rights. Had the world’s largest streamer won the rights, they would have represented the first regularly-scheduled live sporting event in Netflix history. While the streaming giant missed out on the rights three years ago, it could have a chance to rectify that soon, as new reporting indicates that ESPN is ready to walk away from the racing league.
Key Details: John Ourand of Puck reports that ESPN is pulling out of F1 negotiations. Netflix and NBC have already approached the racing league about its rights. F1 is seeking a raise from the $90 million per year it currently makes for its races.

The league can get out of broadcast deals with CBS and Fox as soon as 2030, and if that happens Netflix could jump into the fray.
They say it’s good to have a five-year plan, and Netflix’s current plan is a doozy, especially when it comes to live sports. That’s because John Ourand of Puck News is reporting that Netflix wants to pursue a Sunday afternoon package of NFL games in the future. If it does, it would represent a considerable turnaround in Netflix’s thinking about live sports on its platform. For most of the streaming giant’s existence, it has shied away from live events of any kind, but in recent years, that strategy has been shifting, highlighted by two Christmas Day NFL games last season.
Key Details: Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria told Puck it wants to pursue Sunday afternoon NFL games in the future.

Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

A new update is allowing some Apple TV owners to see shows and movies from Netflix in the Watchlist for easier navigation.
The user interface on your main streaming device can make a huge difference as to what content you watch, or don’t watch. Having your most recently-watched titles shown on a home screen can have a big influence on what you choose to turn on that viewing session, and in this regard Netflix has been at a disadvantage amongst owners of Apple TV devices. Formerly, Netflix titles did not appear in the Apple TV unified Watchlist, but it appears that is now changing.
Key Details: Some Apple TV owners are starting to see Netflix titles appear in the Watchlist and Continue Watching sections. Apple TV shows viewers the titles they watched last on other apps as well, such as Disney+ and Max. An official announcement from Netflix and Apple is likely coming soon.

Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to fantasy thriller The Lost Daughter, a gothic mystery directed by Emmy winner Austin Andrews and Andrew Holmes, marking the writer-director duo’s second feature film. The film is slated for release in early 2025 in select theaters.
Based on Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie’s dark fantasy Mary Rose, the film stars Paloma Kwiatkowski (Riot Girls), David Mazouz (Gotham) and Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter), with Golden Globe nominee Adam Beach (The Power of the Dog) and Donal Logue (Zodiac).
Kwiatkowski plays Lily, a young woman drawn by a haunting melody to a remote tidal island. When she returns to the mainland at the next low tide, 25 years have mysteriously passed.
As Lily reunites with her estranged son Jared (Mazouz), who harbors his own ties to the island, she uncovers terrifying secrets and discovers that escaping the island’s grasp could come at a devastating cost.

The streaming service has an eye toward reducing content costs while simultaneously looking for new audiences.
Netflix may have surpassed 300 million subscribers in its latest quarterly earnings report, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to rest on its laurels. The world’s largest streamer has an increased willingness to pursue live programming and sports, opening it up to more streaming options, but a new report indicates Netflix is continuing to expand its content ambitions even further. According to Business Insider, Netflix is looking into potentially making investments in another rapidly growing entertainment segment: video podcasts.
Key Details: Netflix has increasingly warmed to the idea of having podcast talent host a talk show for it, according to agents. The streamer reportedly looked into a deal with Alex Cooper of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. Edison Research found 89% of Gen-z podcast listeners streamed a podcast with video in 2024. Alexa, play “Greatest Day,” because Anora had one on Saturday. The Neon film regained pole position in the Best Picture Oscar race after taking both the Directors Guild of America Award for Sean Baker and the Producers Guild of America Award. The latter wasn’t a big surprise in an ostensibly splintered Best Picture race, but the former was a huge one. The Brutalist‘s Brady Corbet was the overwhelming favorite in the odds (and was dethroned from No. 1 by Baker in the Oscar odds on Monday), and not a single expert or editor foresaw Baker’s DGA upset coming. So how did he win?
Corbet was not as strong as he seemed to be
Even though Anora won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and held the No. 1 spot in the Best Picture Oscar odds throughout Phase 1, Baker was seen as a default Best Director pick...

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, studios are increasing their focus on theatrical releases, and streamers are pulling back their original movie slates.
One of the biggest headaches for movie studios is that cinemas are still struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Attendance and revenue are slowly creeping back upward, but they haven’t yet approached pre-pandemic levels, and there are some executives and analysts who are nervous that they never will. However, new data from Luminate might help to allay some fears; Luminate Film & TV’s 2024 Year-End Report has some fascinating insights on the decreasing number of streaming original movies. Not only is this because streamers are trying to slim down their content budgets but also because studios are refocusing their attention on theatrical releases.
Key Details: Theatrical release numbers have risen steadily since 2021, whereas streaming original films have declined. Viewership for streaming original movies is also going down,...

Based on the Corby poisonings, the series follows three mothers taking on a system that failed them.
True stories are always in style, and Netflix is going back to the (contaminated) well with “Toxic Town,” dropping Thursday, Feb. 27. The series unpacks the real-life Corby poisonings, one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals, where a town’s mishandling of toxic waste led to serious consequences. It follows three mothers - including Susan McIntyre (Jodie Whittaker) - who refuse to back down after their children are born with birth defects linked to the pollution. As they go up against local officials and a system that would rather look the other way, the fight for justice becomes personal, emotional, and impossible to ignore. With a powerhouse cast and a story based on real events, here’s everything you need to know about “Toxic Town.”

In a surprising win that resets the Oscar race, Anora director Sean Baker took home the Feature Film Director prize at Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday, instantly becoming the frontrunner for the Best Director trophy at the Academy Awards.
Baker, a first-time DGA nominee, toppled a strong field that included fellow Oscar nominees Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), along with Conclave director Edward Berger, who failed to land an Oscar bid. The DGA victory came on the same night Baker’s film — which personally earned him four Academy Award bids — unexpectedly won the top prize at another major precursor, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and one night after the film scored at the Critics Choice Awards.
Corbet had still been considered the prohibitive favorite for both the DGA honor and directing Oscar going into Saturday.

Anora won Best Picture at Friday’s Critics Choice Awards. It was the Neon film’s only victory of the night, preventing an 0-for-7 shutout, and the first time in Critics Choice history that a film won the top award and nothing else.
Twice delayed by the Los Angeles wildfires, the 30th Critics Choice Awards was the first stop of a weekend that could clarify the open Best Picture Oscar race, but Critics Choice didn’t quite do that in a ceremony that spread the wealth with a couple of surprise wins. Jon M. Chu (Wicked) pulled off a shocker in Best Director, while Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) upset Sean Baker (Anora) in Best Original Screenplay.
While Critics Choice is not an industry award, 17 of its previous 29 Best Picture winners went on to claim the Oscar. However, there have been five mismatches in the last 10 years, most recently three years...

The film was directed by Ezra Edelman, the Oscar-winner behind ‘Oj: Made in America.’

The streamer was interested in acquiring an F1 package in 2022, but lost out to ESPN.
Is Netflix off to the races as far as live programming is concerned? That might literally be the case, according to a new report from the Times of London.
