Customers with HDR10+-compatible devices can now watch Netflix in greater detail than ever.

Netflix is the worldwide leader in streaming, with more than 300 million customers around the world. With that being the case, the streamer has to make sure it’s at the forefront of streaming from a technical aspect as well as a content standpoint. To that end, Netflix announced on Monday that it was adding support for HDR10+.

While speaking with Variety, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos was asked if he’s disappointed that Netflix has yet to win an Oscar for Best Picture. “It’s hard for me to say, ‘Do they have it out for Netflix?’ when we’ve been the most-nominated studio for the past three years,” Sarandos said. “There’s something about [the Academy] — you nominate the movies that you respect and admire, and you vote for best picture for the movie that you love. Founded in 2008 by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, See-Saw Films is one of the most prestigious outfits on the market, with an awards track record that includes 5 Oscars, awards track record, including 5 Oscars, 13 Emmys, and 15 BAFTAs.

The deal continues Mediawan’s buying spree, which has seen the French outfit do a series of headline-making deals, including taking majority ownership of Brad Pitt’s Plan B in 2022, partnering with LeBron James’ The SpringHill Company last September, and purchasing German mini-major Leonine. They oversee a team of eight executive producers and a staff of over 50 people across development, production, legal and business affairs, finance and marketing.

The growing entertainment outfit, which also owns Brad Pitt’s Plan B, has taken a 51% majority in See-Saw, which makes the likes of Heartstopper, Slow Horses, Apple Cider Vinegar, The Power of the Dog and One Life.

See-Saw has been up for sale since last year and has been the source of much speculation in M&a circles, with Acf investment bank conducting the sales process.

See-Saw has headquarters in the UK and Australia and has been on a hot streak in recent years. The studio was launched by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman back in 2008. Helen Gregory and Simon Gillis now lead day-to-day operations as Joint Managing Directors. The company last year launched a joint venture, Fanboy, with Heartstoppper executive producer Patrick Walters. Sweetpea, Kirstie Swain’s adaptation of Cj Skuse’s darkly comic novel, was its first production.

After taking home the Oscar for best supporting actress, “Emilia Pérez” star Zoe Saldaña responded to criticism of the film’s portrayal of Mexico, after a journalist shared that it has been “really hurtful for us Mexicans.”

Netflix — which airs the wildly popular F1 docuseries “Drive to Survive” — was reportedly very interested in the rights. Had the world’s largest streamer won the rights, they would have represented the first regularly-scheduled live sporting event in Netflix history. While the streaming giant missed out on the rights three years ago, it could have a chance to rectify that soon, as new reporting indicates that ESPN is ready to walk away from the racing league.

Key Details: John Ourand of Puck reports that ESPN is pulling out of F1 negotiations. Netflix and NBC have already approached the racing league about its rights. F1 is seeking a raise from the $90 million per year it currently makes for its races.

The league can get out of broadcast deals with CBS and Fox as soon as 2030, and if that happens Netflix could jump into the fray.

They say it’s good to have a five-year plan, and Netflix’s current plan is a doozy, especially when it comes to live sports. That’s because John Ourand of Puck News is reporting that Netflix wants to pursue a Sunday afternoon package of NFL games in the future. If it does, it would represent a considerable turnaround in Netflix’s thinking about live sports on its platform. For most of the streaming giant’s existence, it has shied away from live events of any kind, but in recent years, that strategy has been shifting, highlighted by two Christmas Day NFL games last season.

A new update is allowing some Apple TV owners to see shows and movies from Netflix in the Watchlist for easier navigation.

The user interface on your main streaming device can make a huge difference as to what content you watch, or don’t watch. Having your most recently-watched titles shown on a home screen can have a big influence on what you choose to turn on that viewing session, and in this regard Netflix has been at a disadvantage amongst owners of Apple TV devices. Formerly, Netflix titles did not appear in the Apple TV unified Watchlist, but it appears that is now changing.

Vertical has acquired U.S. rights to fantasy thriller The Lost Daughter, a gothic mystery directed by Emmy winner Austin Andrews and Andrew Holmes, marking the writer-director duo’s second feature film. The film is slated for release in early 2025 in select theaters.

In a surprising win that resets the Oscar race, Anora director Sean Baker took home the Feature Film Director prize at Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday, instantly becoming the frontrunner for the Best Director trophy at the Academy Awards.

Baker, a first-time DGA nominee, toppled a strong field that included fellow Oscar nominees Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), along with Conclave director Edward Berger, who failed to land an Oscar bid. The DGA victory came on the same night Baker’s film — which personally earned him four Academy Award bids — unexpectedly won the top prize at another major precursor, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and one night after the film scored at the Critics Choice Awards.

Corbet had still been considered the prohibitive favorite for both the DGA honor and directing Oscar going into Saturday.
