When Richard Donner’s The Omen came out in 1976, it was at the tail end of a recent wave of demonic, faith-based horror. “The Omen” prequel “The First Omen” is the latest installment in modern horror franchises and reboots, following the original film which chronicled an American ambassador (Gregory Peck) who adopts a son who turns out to be the antichrist. The film was remade in 2006 by then-20th Century Fox, and landed the short-lived 2016 sequel series, “Damien.” Now, 20th Century Studios’ “The First Omen” attempts to capture where all that satanic worship kicked off.

In a world where TV shows are usually clearly marked as either limited series or ongoing sagas, the Alien prequel keeps us on our toes. Collider recently shared insights from Hawley about his vision for the series.

Hawley’s approach echoes his work on the Marvel series ‘Legion,’ which ran for three seasons. He hasn’t committed to a specific number of seasons for the ‘Alien’ prequel, but his planning process is noteworthy. Eschewing rigid outlines, he prefers an organic story development. “I just don’t necessarily know how long it’s gonna take me to get there,” Hawley remarks. His strategy involves letting the story evolve naturally, driven by creativity rather than a fixed plot.

Yet despite their sheer enormity and astonishing abilities, audiences today may find it difficult to imagine the likes of Godzilla being genuinely scary. Their destruction can be shocking, but the monsters themselves don’t always strike fear in mankind’s heart. Even so, there are those instances in the course of Japanese kaijū cinema — from Godzilla, Gamera, or otherwise — where viewers are genuinely unnerved by what they see on screen.

"The Star Beast" marks a meaningful celebration of Doctor Who's expanded media and allows audiences to appreciate the contributions of the original creators.

David Tennant met Doctor Who comic creators Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons on the set of the 60th anniversary special "The Star Beast." The first of Russell T Davies' three anniversary specials led by Tennant and Catherine Tate adapted the story of Mills and Gibbons' 1979 Doctor Who Weekly comic strip of the same name. In "The Star Beast," the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant) and Donna Noble (Tate) are swept into an intergalactic pursuit when an alien fugitive crash lands in London.

Paul Bettany's movie Priest is a stealth remake of John Wayne's iconic Western, The Searchers. Priest draws heavily from The Searchers, with similar story beats and themes of rescuing a kidnapped relative from an enemy. Priest even uses a fan theory from The Searchers, revealing that the hero's kidnapped niece is actually his daughter, adding an emotional twist to the ending.

A forgotten Paul Bettany vampire movie is a stealth remake of John Wayne's most iconic Western. Wayne became a movie star thanks to his turn in 1939's Stagecoach, and even though the film featured an ensemble cast, his performance stole the show. While he featured in everything from romantic dramas to war movies, he was also permanently typecast as a cowboy. John Wayne starred in 80 Westerns throughout his 50-year career, with some of the most notable being Red River, Rio Bravo and True Grit.

The studio has picked up the rights to Alien Legion, a star-spanning, sci-fi comic initially published by Marvel Comics, with the aim of building a homegrown space opera franchise.

Tim Miller, who directed the original Deadpool as well as Terminator: Dark Fate, is attached to direct.

Don Murphy and Susan Montford of Angry Films, the banner whose credits include Transformers and Real Steel, will produce along with Aaron Ryder.

Legion was co-created by Carl Potts, a former editor and writer at Marvel, and was introduced as part of the publisher’s creator-owned imprint, Epic Comics, in 1983. It became the line’s longest-running title, even outliving the imprint when it was moved to other publishers in the 21st century. Alan Zelenetz and Frank Cirocco are the other co-creators.

As expected, Netflix had a quick hit on its hands this weekend: David Fincher’s “The Killer” was an immediate #1 on the streamer. Credit the genre and star Michael Fassbender for giving it a boost that even top directors like Fincher don’t always guarantee.

After all, even Fincher’s first Netflix film, “Mank,” wasn’t a hit. His second offering for the streamer is immediately doing far better than his 2019 black-and-white biopic. Despite good reviews — and eventual Oscar nominations — “Mank” made Netflix’s top 10 for just one day and it only ranked at #10.

As for “The Killer,” its action appeal, a lead actor not known for streaming originals, and elevated festival attention all seem to have contributed to its immediate ascension to #1. It replaced “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with Sony’s big summer hit still #2.

The exact reason for its cancelation was not disclosed, but low viewership and a decline in viewership throughout the 13-episode season may have played a role. Anthony Head, who starred in "Dominion," suggested that changing the show's airing schedule and a lack of active promotion by Syfy could have affected its viewership and contributed to its cancelation.

Now we’ve gotten our hands on the trailer for writer/director Fabián Forte’s’s film Legions, which is described as being “an unabashed love letter to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series”! Legions has been enjoying a successful festival run in recent months, and now XYZ Films is preparing to give the film a VOD release in North America on January 19th.

Said to be “gory, hilarious, and heartwarming”, Legions has the following synopsis: A powerful sorcerer, Antonio Poyju, is locked away in an asylum, and wastes away in his imprisonment as evil, demonic forces take control of Argentina. If Antonio can escape the psychiatric hospital and find his daughter, Helena, their combined strength could save Argentina… but Helena has forgotten her powers.

Fabian Forte's Legions is coming to VOD on January 19th. The distributor XYZ Films has just released their trailer for the flick, which really pushes an Evil Dead angle here. I'm not saying that it isn't there but I came out of watching Legions last year with a different reaction. The first official trailer for the Legion of Super-Heroes animated movie sees Batman calling Supergirl a threat. While they have had their numerous appearances in animation in previous years, the Legion of Super-Heroes is getting their own standalone movie, as Warner. Lily Collins, Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky have partnered to launch Case Study Films, a production company that will look to tell compelling and outside-of-the-box stories through a commercial eye in both film and television.

Case Study will develop material internally and with outside filmmakers and talent, discovering, supporting and giving voice to the next generation of storytellers from all walks of life, as it generates projects for its principals.

The production banner has film financing capabilities through a strategic partnership with High Frequency Entertainment, which will afford it flexibility in deciding whether to produce and finance a project entirely in-house, or to find appropriate streamer or studio partners for it, depending on its scale.

Among the projects in development at Case Study is the Hulu limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, co-produced by Scoop Wasserstein from New York magazine, which has Collins set to star, with McDowell directing.

Streaming media company Cinedigm has landed all North American rights to hit Latin horror movie “History of the Occult” from Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks. After a successful run across Latin America, Europe and Asia, it will debut in the U.S. and Canada in December via Cinedigm’s horror streaming service Screambox, powered by Bloody Disgusting.

Exclusive: XYZ Films has acquired North American rights from FilmSharks to the Argentinian horror film Legions, directed by Fabian Forte.

The film stars Germán De Silva and Lorena Vega and was produced by Javier Diaz. Pic premiered at Fantasia Fest in Montreal this past weekend, and also won best script at the 2022 Fantaspoa. XYZ Films is looking for a late 2022 domestic release.

In Legions, a powerful sorcerer, Antonio, is locked away in an asylum, and wastes away in his imprisonment as evil, demonic forces take control of Argentina. If Antonio can escape the psychiatric hospital, and find his daughter, Helena, their combined strength could save Argentina, but Helena has forgotten her powers. Antonio must reteach her the ways of magic and be humanity’s last hope against this ancient evil.

Argentine production company Coruya Cine (“Nocturna: Side A”), led by Javier Díaz, has signed-on to co-produce “The Sugar Girl,” (“La Niña Del Azúcar”) alongside Peru’s Av Films (“Juego Siniestro”). The project, shooting in the remote and sprawling city of Iquitos, will utilize an Amazonian cine noir aesthetic to merge the suspenseful and metaphysical components of four parallel narratives.

“The space is being given to tell the stories of others. It’s not always the narco, it’s also the one who lives in the jungle, taking another look at Latin America and who we are. Before, it seemed that Europeans were the only ones who could talk about the human condition. Latin America also has stories to tell,” Díaz told Variety.

New York-based Kino Lorber has acquired all North American rights to horror pic “Virtual Reality,” from Argentine director-producer Hernán Findling (“Impossible Crimes”).

Other deals on the pic closed by FilmSharks include Media 4 Fun (Poland), Av Jet (Taiwan) and Laon-i (South Korea). Japan, Latin America, the U.K. and France are under discussion.

“Just a few horror stories attain such a high degree of talent in merging so many different stories within the same feature, incorporating well-known genre cinema classics to make an absolutely new feature. This small-budgeted film has surprised everyone,” FilmSharks CEO, Guido Rud told Variety.

Starring Vanesa González, César Bordón, Christian Sancho and Federico Bal, “Virtual Reality” has screened at Sitges and Bifan. In it, a cast and crew arrive at their director’s house for their film’s first cut screening. They soon find out that he has struck a sinister pact to ensure his career really takes off.

In a series of key pacts for Argentine political horror pic, “History of the Occult,” Netflix has snapped up streaming rights to the film for Spain and Latin America, which it plans to drop on Oct. 15, while WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has scooped up all Central European streaming rights.

In addition, Eurozoom took all French rights and plans a first quarter 2022 theatrical release, said Guido Rud, CEO of Buenos Aires-based sales and production company FilmSharks International.

“We believe that high concept horror is hard to find, and high concept with amazing scripts, almost impossible. But miracles happen and we are lucky that we know the right buyers who have the skills and foresight to recognize these gems when we do,” said Rud.

Worldwide and remake rights to Argentine political horror pic, “History of the Occult,” has been snapped up by leading Buenos Aires-based sales and production company, FilmSharks International.

According to FilmSharks’ CEO Guido Rud, advanced talks are underway with a streaming giant while a major U.S. genre producer is eyeing it for a remake, which FilmSharks subsidiary, The Remake Company, handles.

Filmed in black and white and set in the 1980s, “History of the Occult” takes place during the last broadcast of the #1 news show on TV, “60 Minutes Before Midnight.” A band of journalists are racing against time to convince the lead guest, Adrian Marcato, to expose a conspiracy that connects their corrupt government to an actual coven.

Marcato is played by veteran Argentine film, theatre and commercials actor German Baudino whose credits include “Abrakadabra,” 2017’s “Los Olvidados” and “Dia de los Muertos.”

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks Int’l has picked up worldwide rights to sci-fi-horror film “Virtual Reality” by Argentine terror meister Hernan Findling who has directed and produced a slew of genre films.

“We’d been chasing this title ever since we saw it at the 2020 Sitges Film Festival’s Coming Soon section, a preview of upcoming genre films, and were up against tough competition,” said FilmSharks CEO, Guido Rud. “It was one of the best high-concept horror gems we have seen recently,” added Rud who expects brisk international sales before the film’s premiere later this year.

Rud has also acquired the remake rights to the sci-fi-horror hybrid pic for his FilmSharks subsidiary, The Remake Company.
