It goes without saying that Solo Leveling(also known as "Only I Level Up"in South Korea) is the biggest anime of the moment. Based on the hit web novel written by Chugong and the equally popular webtoon illustrated by Jang Sung-rak (aka Dubu), Solo Leveling took the world by storm when it was turned into a massively successful anime in 2024. It also helps that the incredibly talented A-1 Studios animated the story, and none other than Hiroyuki Sawano scored the series.

With this in mind,it brings me no joy to say that, two seasons in, Solo Leveling is one of — if not — the most overrated anime I've seen in recent memory. That's not to say that it's bad or that it's somehow unwatchable. With the right mindset, Solo Leveling can be enjoyable and even exhilarating. It's also undeniably one of the best-made and best-looking anime airing right now.

Isekai have become infamous for their power scaling that can rival even Dragon Ball, often featuring overpowered main characters who are teleported or reincarnated as the strongest in the world. Magic is usually the go-to for main characters as it's the easiest type of power system to showcase overwhelming power scaling that could rival the most popular shōnen. Anime is one of the best mediums to feature ridiculous powers and abilities that can shake the narrative to its core.

While not every isekai features an overpowered main character, it has become the norm as a power fantasy and escapism type of story. Crazy power scaling results in overpowered characters that change the paradigm of traditional storytelling. Instead of following an underdog that slowly becomes the strongest, isekai is the perfect gateway to feature an overpowered character from the start and watch as the world reacts to them.

Crunchyroll made an announcement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday regarding delays in the dubbing of 22 episodes across 11 different series. These delays are due to the impact of severe weather.

A major winter storm hit the southern United States on Friday, affecting areas like Texas, Georgia, and parts of Oklahoma. The storm has caused over 3,000 flight cancellations and power outages in affected regions.

Texas, where Crunchyroll’s in-house dubbing studio is based, has been particularly impacted.

Anime streaming service Crunchyroll has announced a delay for several major upcoming anime episodes. The news comes at a time of especially bad weather in Dallas, Texas, where a lot of recording takes place for anime English dubs.

Crunchyroll has not specified a location that has led to the delays; however, many of the voice actors for the below-listed anime live in and around Dallas, a major industry hub for professional voice acting and dubbing due to the multiple talent agencies and studios located there. Crunchyroll’s message does confirm that the episodes in question have been delayed due to "severe weather."

The platform also announced that it has distributed 10 of the top 20 grossing anime films in United States box office history. Japanese e-book store Book☆Walker Global unveiled its annual eBook download ranking on Dec 12, 2023, and the year 2023 saw a dominance in the isekai genre. The ranking is based on eBook downloads from Nov 1, 2022, to Oct 31, 2023, on the global store.

The new Crunchyroll channel was already been rolled out on certain TV networks just as it made its press release. Judging by the channels, the 24-hour linear channel will mostly serve as an "economy class" sample, with limited options. The ultimate goal will be to draw in TV-adherent viewers towards trying the online streaming service, with its subscription plan. It's an age-old tactic that nonetheless still creates more options.

An announcement of the venture says its linear-style roster of fan-favorite titles is intended for an “anime-curious audience.” Among the series available at launch are Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Moriarty the Patriot, Psycho–Pass, Arifureta, Sugar Apple Fairytale, To Your Eternity and Code Geass.

New and premium anime content will remain on Crunchyroll’s SVOD and AVOD services, the companies said.

Sony acquired Crunchyroll from AT&T in 2021 and merged it with anime specialist Funimation. The avid base of anime fans globally has propelled Crunchyroll past 10 million paid subscribers, Sony Corp. announced last summer. All anime, all the time: Crunchyroll, the Sony-owned anime service, announced a new 24-hour free, ad-supported channel in the U.S. to promote the Japanese animation format — and try to win a few new fans for its core offerings.

The first services to carry Crunchyroll’s free, ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) channel are LG Channels, the Roku Channel and Vizio WatchFree+, launching on Oct. 11. Amazon’s Freevee is slated to launch the channel on Oct. 17. The channel is a joint collaboration between Crunchyroll and corporate cousin Game Show Network (Gsn), which is part of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The Crunchyroll channel will feature a lineup of older shows, dubbed in English — while new and premium anime content will remain on Crunchyroll’s subscription and ad-supported VOD services. Series available on the Fast channel at launch include “Horimiya,” “Ranking of Kings,” “Moriarty the Patriot,” “Psycho-Pass,” “Arifureta,” “Sugar Apple Fairy Tale,” “To Your Eternity” and “Code Geass.

The anime-based channel, which is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Crunchyroll and Gsn, will be available across Fast TV, with Amazon Freevee, LG Channels, The Roku Channel and Vizio WatchFree+ being the first to carry the channel. The network will launch on Oct. 11 on LG Channels, The Roku Channel and Vizio WatchFree+, with beginning to carry the channel on Oct. 17.

The channel will carry beloved Crunchyroll series, including “Horimiya,” “Ranking of Kings,” “Moriarty the Patriot,” “Psycho–Pass,” “Arifureta,” “Sugar Apple Fairytale,” “To Your Eternity” and “Code Geass.” New anime content will remain on Crunchyroll’s SVOD and AVOD services as well.

Anime has been better than ever in recent years, and with the likes of Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family Part 2, Mob Psycho season 3 , and Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War coming this fall season, anime fans are spoiled for amazing shows from Japan.
