The best thing about Wayward Pines, the new, short-run effort coming to Fox, is watching how it attempts to learn from the mistakes of similar shows that have come before.
From the less-than-stellar “remake” of The Prisoner with Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen, to the largely goofball Persons Unknown (which was, sort of, The Prisoner 2: The Group), and everything else in the “trapped in a town” genre, the story can’t work if the characters are empty plot devices.
Wayward Pines is a rare example of setting out with the tropes and traps of a genre in order to dodge the pitfalls inherent in telling a type of story that can never fully distance itself from the fact that it’s pretty goofy. The problem is that while the show clearly tries to look at what made other efforts fall apart, and do those things differently, it isn’t...

We head back a decade to look at a few films that deserve more attention. Here’s our list of 25 underappreciated movies of 2004...
Think back to 2004, and you might dredge up hazy memories of the computer-generated fairytale sequel Shrek 2, Alfonso’s Harry Potter installment, The Prisoner Of Azkaban, or maybe Mel Gibson’s phenomenally successful Passion Of The Christ.
It’s rather less likely that you’ll remember some of the films on this list. You’re probably aware of the drill by now: we’ve gone back into our distant, beer-addled memories to find 25 of the less commonly-lauded movies from the year 2004.
Some of them did reasonably well at the time, but appear to have been forgotten since (especially the one eclipsed by its own internet meme), while others were coolly received by the public or critics (and sometimes...

Ruth Wilson is about to have a moment.
The 31-year-old British actress -- best known for her work on the television series "Luther" and "The Prisoner" -- stars as Rebecca Reid in Disney's "The Lone Ranger," the film's female lead. What was required of Wilson during the film's nearly 150-day production process was quite demanding. She even had to get thrown from a speeding train onto a speeding horse. Well, sort of.
"I was on a fake horse," Wilson told HuffPost Entertainment. "There was a stuntwoman who did the wide version of the shot and did it properly. We were all amazed by her." Not that the fake horse wasn't terrifying as well. "We were going along on a road rig at 40 miles per hour when we were shooting it, so it felt pretty real," Wilson said.

AMC has quite the track record with original scripted series -- aside from "Rubicon" and the experiment that was "The Prisoner," the network's done consistently well with its hourlong dramas: "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead," "Hell on Wheels," even the returning "The Killing." So "Low Winter Sun," the network's newest show, probably merits attention just on the basis of the channel on which it'll be broadcast. But the crime series, which comes from writer, executive producer and showrunner Chris Mundy ("Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior"), also stars the excellent Mark Strong ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "Zero Dark Thirty"), who's reprising his role as troubled Detective Frank Agnew from the original, acclaimed two-part 2006 U.K. miniseries of the same name on which the show is based. Lennie James ("The Walking Dead") co-stars in the AMC series, which transplants the story of how the murder of a fellow detective pulls Agnew into the criminal underworld from.

Sir Ian McKellen is TV-bound with "Vicious Old Queens" for ITV.
According to The British Comedy Guide, McKellen and Derek Jacobi will co-star in the sitcom about an elderly homosexual couple living in Covent Garden. "Family Guy" writer and producer Gary Janetti wrote the project, which is not an American show, but it could find its way to Us shores. "Vicious Old Queens" will be six 30-minute episodes.
McKellen recently spoke about how being gay made him a good actor. "[W]e spent so long pretending to be straight, to be someone else, that eventually we became very good at it," McKellen said, according to Business Insider.
While known primarily for his film work, McKellen's other TV credits include "The Prisoner," "Coronation Street" and several TV movies.

As always with the continuous rumors about Marvel Studios’ films, don’t get too excited. This could all be a pile of you know what, especially considering the source (The Daily Mail).
The rumor is this: that British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are in the running to play Carol Danvers, or Ms. Marvel, in Avengers 2. Blunt is the wider known actress, with roles in Looper, The Adjustment Bureau, The Young Victoria, and Devil Wears Prada. Ruth Wilson is wonderfully creepy as a killer in BBC’s Luther and also had a role in The Prisoner.
Ms. Marvel is one of the more well known female superheroes in the Marvel Universe, and one of the primary Avengers members, so it makes sense from the standpoint of adding more women to the male dominated squad. Scarlett Johansson did a wonderful job carrying her own as Black Widow in the first film,...

Would you want to be stuck in a prison with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone? Jim Caviezel’s about to be…
Fresh off their stint together in this summer’s PG-13-rated action opus, The Expendables 2, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger seemingly can’t get enough of each other. For their third film together in two years, they’ll be joining forces for The Tomb.
The Tomb will see Stallone play a structural security expect, who knows every high security prison inside out. And he’s put in a position where he has to escape from one of the toughest prisons on the planet, one that he designed himself.
There, he’s joined by Arnie’s inmate, with the two teaming up in an attempt to survive and escape.
Joining them in the film is Jim Caviezel, best known for The Passion Of The Christ and the recent take on - yes!

Jim Caviezel has joined Sly Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Tomb, which is set to be directed by Mikael Håfström (1408, The Rite). According to producer Mark Canton, Caviezel will play the prison warden in the film. Caviezel is an incredible actor who doesn't get enough good movie roles these days. At one point he was a rising star. I find it interesting that after he did Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ, his career moved to TV such as The Prisoner and Person of Interest. It's awesome to see that he's landed a new movie role, though.
The Tomb sounds like it will be a pretty cool film, and it tells the story of a man (Stallone) who has designed a high-tech prison that is said to be escape-proof, who has to escape it himself. I'm looking forward to this, especially since it has a pretty awesome cast so far.

By no means intended as an exhaustive list, Clothes on Film ponder an overview of 2011 in costume. Concentrating on mainstream fare that those outside of big cities are likely to have seen, we consider which costumes delighted, surprised and best of all, enlightened us. Expect to spot Drive, Melancholia and Hugo on this list somewhere.
Costume encompasses every item of clothing worn on film. By strict definition costume is not ‘wardrobe’; wardrobe is what Oprah Winfrey wore on her talk show. While at Clothes on Film we embrace all forms of costume, we do have a slight bias for contemporary, although only because it is often underrepresented in the face of (admittedly dazzling) period or fantasy wear. This roundup will comprise both period and contemporary, but...

Paul Bettany, Brian Cox and Stephen Graham have all become attached to Nick Murphy’s thriller "Blood" at Neal Street Productions and Red Production Company says Screen Daily.
The feature is an adaptation of BAFTA-nominated 2004 BBC TV series "Conviction", and the story follows two policemen who kill a murder suspect and are then plunged into chaos when they are forced to investigate their own crime.
Bill Gallagher ("The Prisoner") scripted the feature based on his own series. Pippa Harris will produce and shooting gets underway in January in the UK.

CBS Jim Caviezel in “Person of Interest.”
To prepare for his new role on the television drama, “Person of Interest,” actor Jim Caviezel spent a lot of time with Special Forces operatives, and with guns. At the gun range, he handled MP5s, Ar-15s, M4 rifles, and broke down weapons blindfolded. He tried to understand the weapon as part of his body, an extension of his hand. Mostly, though he tried to adopt the Special Forces mindset.

Ruth Wilson is in negotiations to play the female lead in "The Lone Ranger" movie for Disney Pictures reports Deadline.
Wilson's character is named Rebecca, other details however aren't forthcoming. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film stars Armie Hammer as the Masked Man and Johnny Depp as Tonto.
Known for a soft voice and strikingly magnetic screen presence, Wilson scored a Golden Globe nomination in 2006 for playing the titular role in the BBC's superb mini-series adaptation of "Jane Eyre" which also starred Toby Stephens.
She then went on to have a role in the mini-series remake of "The Prisoner", and most recently has been seen playing the former child prodigy turned cold-blooded killer Alice in the Idris Elba-led British police drama "Luther".
Wilson beat out the likes of Jessica Chastain and Abbie Cornish for the lead role.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban is quite rightly viewed as the point where the series found its footing. After putting everything he had into The Chamber Of Secrets - “blood, sweat and tears,” as he put it - Chris Columbus decided that he wouldn't return for the third instalment. He stayed on as a producer, but as the series moved into its regular 18 month cycle of releasing, the third film needed a new director for the June 2004 release.

Along with a handful of adorable, candid, and crush-worthy things Hayley Atwell said during a recent Esquire interview was the unexpected revelation that the Jimi Hendrix biopic OutKast's André "3000" Benjamin has been trying to make and star in for years may be back on track. Also: Atwell ad-libbed the fondling of Chris Evans's chest in Captain America and admits The Prisoner mini-series remake "was a complete joke." Make this girl a star!

Captain America: The First Avenger star Hayley Atwell is featured in the latest issue of Esquire magazine, offering American audiences a chance to meet the actress behind the image on their soda can and other Captain America-sponsored merchandise.
Prior to her role in First Avenger, Atwell's most recognizable role outside of her native Britain was a supporting role in AMC's 2009 mini-series The Prisoner. While talking to Esquire, Atwell revealed that she won her First Avenger role without an audition, and, perhaps, after a few drinks with director Joe Johnston.
When I met with the director of Captain America, I hadn't seen the script, and I had to go meet him, and we spoke for like an hour. With a lot of those big films, they'll do that instead of an audition — and I prefer them, because I love a chat. I've found the messier the meeting gets, the more successful.

Raylan Givens is going to be protecting Winona for a lot longer. Natalie Zea signed a new deal Thursday with FX to stay on Justified for its third season. Zea plays Winona Hawkins, the ex-wife of U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens played by Timothy Olyphant.
Zea will also have a multiple episode arc on the upcoming fourth season of Californication. She will play a new love interest of David Duchovny’s Hank Moody. But cable TV viewers aren’t the only ones who get to enjoy Zea, as she will appear in the pilot episode of CBS’s Person of Interest starring Michael Emerson (Lost), Jim Caviezel (The Prisoner) Taraji P. Henson (Larry Crowne) which is being produced by J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan. Deadline broke the news.

CBS has posted a trailer for one of its most exciting new shows, J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan’s Person of Interest - with plenty of plot and character details as well as some bone-crunching action thrown in for good measure.
For those unfamiliar with the project, Person of Interest teams the ubiquitous producer J.J. Abrams with screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, famous for penning his director brother’s projects Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. The series stars James Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, The Prisoner) and Lost regular Michael Emerson.
The video featurette gives a first look, not only at the basic story for Person of Interest, but a glimpse behind the camera as well. Caviezel plays Reese, a former CIA agent turned drifter who wanders the streets of New York City. Wealthy ...

CBS didn't stray too far from its (successful) drama recipe with the three new shows it picked up for 2011-12. You'll see crimes getting solved in two of them, and the third, a medical show, contains elements of shows that have enjoyed good runs on the network in the past.
The network does say, however, that it wants to seed more prominent character arcs into the procedural soil. So while none of the new shows is going to turn into "Lost" (even though one of those shows is executive produced by J.J. Abrams), CBS recognizes the way viewers latch onto their favorite characters in procedurals -- see Booth-Brennan, Grissom-Sidle et al.
Whether the newcomers get enough time on the air for audiences to develop those bonds is, of course, not determined yet. Here are our initial thoughts on the three new CBS dramas for fall (the network also picked up...

The Us rights to Julia Leigh's feature debut 'Sleeping Beauty' has been picked up by Sundance Selects during the Cannes film festival. The Australian made movie, stars Emily Browning ('Sucker Punch', 'The Uninvited' - whom also today has signed up to new thriller 'Magic, Magic') along with Rachael Blake ('The Prisoner') and Ewen Leslie. Emily plays Lucy, 'a student-turned-prostitute who allows herself to be used while passed out in a drug induced stupor inside what is called a Sleeping Beauty chamber'. The 'haunting erotic fairytale' will also see Emily Browning appear in her first ever nude scenes, for most of the movie actually, and includes full frontal scenes too. A very brave young actress! Check out the poster, trailer and a still from the movie below....

CBS is still first in the ratings rat race and as a result, so far, they’ve made the fewest changes to their schedule.
Person of Interest, a thriller from J.J. Abrams and The Dark Knight scribe Jonathan Nolan, will join sitcom Broke Girls in the fall lineup.
Person of Interest has long been on viewers’ most wanted lists for its pairing of the two notable behind-the-camera talents. The show will follow an ex-cia agent, missing and presumed dead, who moves to New York City (where else?) to fight crime. Helping him in his crusade is a reclusive billionaire with his own interests.

CBS has given the green light to two new series for next season, adding drama "Person of Interest" and comedy "Two Broke Girls" to the deluge of series pickups that happened Friday (May 13).
The network is expected to add a couple more dramas and maybe one other comedy to its roster for 2011-12 before its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday (May 18). The Eye's news may not be as splashy as the 12(!) new series orders by ABC or the flurry of pickups and cancellations at NBC. But then again, CBS doesn't have as many holes to plug.
The J.J. Abrams-produced "Person of Interest" stars Michael Emerson ("Lost") as a billionaire who is waging a personal war on crime and hires a presumed-dead former CIA agent (Jim Caviezel, "The Prisoner") to help him. Taraji P. Henson ("Boston Legal," "The Karate Kid") plays a duly sworn detective who gets tied up with the two men.

Brendan Fraser is in negotiations to star in "William Tell: 3D" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The classic tale has an archer forced to shoot an apple off the top of his son's head after not wanting to bow in front of the king's statue.
When the monarch inquires why Tell had two arrows in his quiver, the archer replied the other arrow was for the king in case he missed the apple. The ensuing events led to an uprising, eventually causing the formation of the state of Switzerland.
Anna Paquin is in negotiations to play Tell's wife while Til Schweiger will play Habsburg king Hermann Gessler. Scott Reynolds wrote the script.
Nick Hurran (TV's "The Prisoner" remake) is attached to helm while Todd Moyer and Gary Hamilton will produce. Shooting kicks off this Fall in Romania and Switzerland.

While I'm fairly certain that everybody knows about William Tell shooting an apple off of his son's head, I sometimes wonder if people are aware of the full story. Actually fairly dark, the full tale is filled with political oppression, rebellion, vengeance and murder. It's actually fairly compelling, but don't tell Brendan Fraser that. That would mean he just signed up for a project with potential and lord knows that he can't have that. A press released issued by Arclight Films (via Coming Soon) has announced that Fraser has been cast as the lead in William Tell: 3D, a new "historical family action adventure." Scheduled to shoot this fall in Europe, the film's script was written by Scott Reynolds and will be directed by Nick Hurran (The Prisoner, Doctor Who). Anna Paquin is also in talks for an unspecified role. Said producer Todd Moyer of Fraser's casting, "There is no...

Brendan was the driving force behind the movie being shot in 3D,” said producer Todd Moyer. “He’s a witty, charming and very likeable action hero, and he really anchors the ensemble cast.” Here is the official synopsis: William Tell is a legend in North America for shooting an apple from the top of his son’s head with a bow and arrow (it was really a crossbow). What Americans don’t know is that he’s a revered historical figure in Europe. In the legend, Tell just can’t leave well enough alone. The local potentate of the Hapsburg monarch, Hermann Gessler forces Tell to shoot the apple because he...

There are plenty of fairy tales coming our way, with movies like Snow White and the Huntsman and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters headed to the big screen, but ComingSoon has revealed (courtesy of Aussie site Stale Popcorn) a new poster that leaves no doubt about the new Sleeping Beauty definitely Not being anything even remotely associated with Disney.
The movie promo shows Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) wearing nothing but imagination and a little bit of satin. This sleeping beauty is a prostitute that takes sleeping pills before sexual encounters, allowing her clients to do anything they desire to her unconscious form. Yeah, it’s definitely not something you’ll want to take your kids to see.
Sleeping Beauty, which also stars Michael Dorman (Daybreakers), Mirrah Foulkes (All Saints) and Rachael Blake (The Prisoner), doesn’t have a release date scheduled at this time.

It’s been seven years since Jim Caviezel starred in The Passion of the Christ. Yet it seems he’s still feeling the sting of the movie’s effect on some moviegoers and industry insiders. Speaking to the First Baptist Church of Orlando in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, the actor discussed being “rejected in my own industry” after playing Jesus in the controversial film directed by Mel Gibson, which many criticized as anti-Semitic. ” said, ‘You’ll never work in this town again,’” Caviezel told the audience. “I told him, ‘We all have to embrace our crosses.’” Caviezel, who also told...

When a television show achieves the magic of say, a "Lost" or a "Battlestar Galactica," the tendency is to want to keep duplicating the formula to create other successful shows. Dumb as today's audiences are, some of those television executives are even more idiotic--just repeating the same thing over and over doesn't guarantee people will watch (as evidenced by "Caprica" or muddled shows like "The Nine" and "The Event"). But what if you take a couple of the cast members that worked together and were an important puzzle piece? Or put a particular showrunner and actor together? Will that draw in viewers? There are definitely actors who can migrate from show to show and take audiences with them; people will watch Michael Emerson do almost anything. Sometimes collaborations can be taken to an extreme, to the point that we all just sigh in frustration (Tim Burton and Johnny Depp)--but on television,...
