Divine in the cult classic “Pink Flamingos”
The documentary I Am Divine made its world premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival and as the title suggests, it documents the life and times of the iconic Divine, the mother of all drag performers. Divine worshippers and newbies will be happy to know that this movie has all the crazy and outlandish antics expected from the late great performer, but it's also surprisingly intimate, heartfelt, and a bit somber.
All of us remember our first encounter with the lovely Divine (born Harris Glenn Milstead). More than likely, you know her from John Waters' Pink Flamingos (a.k.a. The movie where she eats dog poo). It wasn't any different for Jeffrey Schwarz, director of the film. He was in his teenage years when he started worshipping at the altar of Divine.
“I had read about Pink Flamingos before actually seeing it,...

Jeffrey Schwarz's is a very busy man. "I am Divine" is his fourth feature documentary in five years. This past summer his last film "Vito" aired on HBO. It was about the beloved gay activist and film scholar Vito Russo, and it comes out on DVD this April. His other films are "Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story," about the prolific Hollywood director who specialized in audience participation gimmicks and "Wrangler: Anatomy Of an Icon," about a 1970s gay porn star who transitioned to straight films and married Margaret Whiting. He has spent the better part of this century making "behind-the-scenes" documentaries and DVD extras stating he's "the guy responsible for all those featurettes, audio commentaries, and other "added value" as the studios like to call it." What it's about: "I Am Divine" is the story of how an overweight, effeminate, bullied Baltimore kid transformed himself into an internationally recognized drag superstar.

You may not know his name, but Jeffrey Schwarz is probably one of the most interesting documentary filmmakers around these days. Schwarz and his company, Automat Films, are behind some of the most fun, entertaining, and engrossing documentaries of the last decade. Automat cut its teeth creating bonus material for DVD in the early 2000's, mainly with Schwarz in the director's chair. In fact, if you dare to peek at his IMDb page, he's got well over 100 titles to his credit. However, interspersed within those films are a few stand-alone features documentaries that are well worth seeking out. Now, the director of Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story, Vito, and Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon needs your help. Schwarz and company have embarked upon creating...

Actor Tab Hunter is set to appear in the documentary "Tab Hunter Confidential" about what it was like to live a lie in Hollywood. Titled after Hunter's 2005 autobiography, the documentary will be directed by Jeffrey Schwartz (""Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon," and "Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story").
The documentary will profile Hunter as a closeted gay actor at a time when Hollywood forced their homosexual stars to hide so they could market them as heterosexuals. Allan Glaser, Hunter's longtime partner, and Neil Koenigsberg are set to produce.
A little bio about Hunter from Wikipedia:
Arthur Gelien was signed to a contract at Warner Bros. and christened "Tab Hunter" by his first agent, Henry Willson.[2] His good looks got him pegged as a screen idol. He landed a role in the film Island of Desire opposite Linda Darnell. However, it was his co-starring role as young Marine Danny in 1955's...
