In today's era of reboots, spin-offs, sequels, and live-action remakes, studios are looking everywhere to bring franchises with built-in audiences to the big screen. With the massive success of toy-based films like Barbie and Transformers, it was only a matter of time for Lego Ninjago to be given the same treatment. While the Lego brand saw a successful theatrical film with The Lego Movie and its less successful spin-offs, original properties under the Lego umbrella have not yet been adapted into live-action.

It's been five months since the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy released on Netflix. The streaming channel made all twenty episodes available, allowing fans an epic binge, but things have been silent since then. Netflix has made no mention of a season three renewal, despite outspoken fans who have undertaken yet another campaign.
Now, the creators of Prodigy, Kevin and Dan Hageman, are writing a live-action Lego Ninjago movie for Universal. [via Screenrant] This isn't a surprise to fans of the Ninjago television series as the brothers were the executive producers and writers for the first nine seasons. So why wouldn't they jump at the chance to write the script for a live-action movie? And it really is good news for them. For Prodigy fans? Not so much.

The Lego franchise will begin making live-action movies, and I think that idea is an awful mistake. Lego is mostly known for its plastic brick toys and miniature figures, but the company began making high-budget animated movies and shows with 2014's aptly-named The Lego Movie. Since the success of The Lego Movie, which earned $468 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), the franchise has made several more Lego movies, including a sequel, a pair of Lego Batman films, a movie about Ninjago, and more. Even though the Lego franchise has expanded its subject matter, one thing has stayed the same: its animation.
Now, however, there are three live-action Lego movies in the works. There are currently very few details about the films, and not even their titles are public knowledge yet. However, three directors have been attached to the movies: Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman...

Lego's Ninjago continuity reveals a shocking secret, as Garmadon investigates the origins of the spinjitzu technique of Shatterspin. In the new comic Ninjago: Shatterspin, Garmadon travels to the Wyldness and discovers the history of Shatterspin, and what happens to those who are not worthy of its power.
In Ninjago: Shatterspin (2024) #2 by Tri Vuong, Riccardo Robaldo, K.J. Diaz and Pat Brosseau, Garmadon has arrived in the Wyldness, has communicated with the spirits of the Wolf Clan, and is now trapped in a cave with their descendants after the monstrous Lycan King attacks. To free the group from the cave, Garmadon receives teachings from the spirits of the Wolf Clan, learning Shatterspin.
Escaping the Lycan King, the Children of the Wolf take Garmadon to their Mama Mawa, who explains the history of Shatterspin - including the terrible price paid by those who aren't worthy of ultimate power.

Netflix just made the same mistake as Paramount+ by not renewing Star Trek: Prodigy for season 3. Star Trek: Prodigy creators and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman have signed on to write a live-action Lego Ninjago movie for Universal. While great news for the Hageman brothers and Lego fans, this is bad tidings for more Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix, just as Paramount+ not greenlighting Star Trek: Picard's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy, led to Terry Matalas jumping to new opportunities at Marvel Studios and 20th Century Studios.
Following a dedicated fan campaign, Star Trek: Prodigy was acquired by Netflix in late 2023 after Paramount+ abruptly canceled the beloved CGI animated series. After a slew of big announcements, yet another Lego Movie is now in development. The Lego series has gotten some activity with the well-reviewed 2024 film Piece by Piece. Unlike the other Lego Movies, which are fictional stories, Piece by Piece is a whimsical biography of singer and musician Pharrell Williams. The main Lego series, which includes The Lego Movie and its 2019 follow up, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, was taken over by Universal in 2020. Since then, development on The Lego Movie 3 was seemingly confirmed yet massively stalled as the Lego-verse grappled with new leadership.

According to the source, a script for a new Lego Ninjago movie is being developed by brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman. Unlike the previous Lego Ninjago Movie, this film will be live-action. Ninjas have never been out of vogue but between last year’s Turtles animated feature “Mutant Mayhem” and the recently-released Netflix series “House of Ninjas,” it’s fair to say they’re having a moment.
Not that your average “Ninjago” fan (average age 6-8) would care about whether or not ninjas are in vogue. Since launching simultaneously as a show and product 13 years ago, the Lego-originated IP has spawned 16 seasons, 235 episodes, a 2017 feature film starring Jackie Chan, theme park attractions and, of course, plenty of toys.
In 2023 “Ninjago” was semi-rebooted under a fresh title “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” which introduced new characters and story arcs. In part the change came about because the “Ninjago” universe was so vast there was no easy access point for a new generation of kids. “There’s so much material, it’s our longest running show,” says Asa Tait, head of production at Lego’s...

Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.
For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.

Family-friendly cartoons on Netflix offer entertainment for both kids and parents alike, with smart storytelling and creativity that elevate them from being just for little kids. These cartoons have age-appropriate content and bright colors, fun characters, and exciting action that captivate children while parents never feel like they are watching something beneath them. From Lego adventures in Ninjago to the positive messages in Skylanders Academy and the dark yet responsible themes in Ben 10, these animated series provide a range of options that appeal to different age groups within the family.
While cartoons used to just be for kids, there are several family-friendly cartoons on Netflix that entertain kids and parents alike. The streaming giant has developed some of the highest-ranked animated original series airing today, some made just for adults, with examples like Big Mouth and Bojack Horsemen as something that young children should never watch until they're of a certain age.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai
I have never seen the Gremlins movie, but I know that gremlins smell bad and want to eat us. Just watching five minutes of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, I think it is already a really good TV show.
The show is 25 percent happy, 25 percent sad, 25 percent funny, and 25 percent disgusting. The disgusting parts are when fingers come off. It’s about a kid, Sam (Izaac Wang), who says, “I have no faith in myself. I can’t do it.” He has to hide this gremlin named Gizmo, who is so cute, and return it to its home. He finds this girl, Elle (Gabrielle Nevaeh Green), and they go on a big adventure to find its home. He’s kind of like a goody-two-shoes and the...

Coming into play June 2023, an additional component to the Ninjago theme, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, will continue to expand the Ninjago world with never-before-seen characters and storylines.

A new trailer for the sequel to The Meg has been revealed, and somehow they’ve managed to add a T-Rex to this franchise.
“It was the summer of 2018. A movie starring Jason Statham and a giant shark hit theaters and those who saw it generally enjoyed it. That film, The Meg, went on to gross over $500 million worldwide, if you can believe it, and work soon began on a sequel. That sequel is coming to theaters in August and now has its first trailer.”

San Diego Comic-Con 2021, the second Comic-Con@Home edition of the beloved pop culture event, kicks off its three-day run Friday.
The free online event, which runs through Sunday, isn't anywhere near as packed with panels as the famed in-person Sdcc usually is, but a decent number of studios and networks will still be hosting Q&As and digital screenings for their TV shows and movies.
As TheWrap reported exclusively earliest this month, HBO (which did present at the 2020 event) will be skipping this year's online con, but its sibling streaming service HBO Max is presenting a virtual event for the show, "gen:lock."
Other notable absentees from the second (and hopefully last) pandemic-forced virtual San Diego Comic-Con include Marvel Studios and DC Films, both of which did not attend the first Comic-Con@Home last year.

The end of 2020 and the start of 2021 have featured a diverse and dynamic collection of cinema-related books. Let’s start with two of these, a biography of director Mike Nichols and an oral history of Dazed and Confused, which qualify as movie-lover must-owns.
Mike Nichols: A Life by Mark Harris (Penguin Press)
Will there be a finer, more compelling biography in 2021 than Mike Nichols: A Life? I tend to doubt it, as Mark Harris’ study of the career of the Berlin-born, Nichols-and-May comic genius turned Broadway and Hollywood heavyweight rivals the author’s previous modern classics: Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood and Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War. Captain Janeway back.
Kate Mulgrew is set to reprise her iconic Star Trek: Voyager role in Nickelodeon’s forthcoming CG-animated spinpff Star Trek: Prodigy.
The news dropped Thursday via a virtual panel at New York Comic Con.
The series will follow a group of lawless teens as they search the universe for adventure, meaning, and salvation aboard a derelict Starfleet ship they discover and crew.
Yep, the series will be aimed at the younger generation, so the home on Nickelodeon makes sense.
“When [exec producer] Alex Kurtzman called me over a year ago to propose this idea I have to tell you at first I was a little bit uncertain,” Mulgrew said during the Nycc panel.
“After all I have played her for seven years in four-and-a-half-inch heels. I have invested every scintilla of my being in that woman. And I thought, ‘An animated version of Janeway? I don’t know.’ But...

Kate Mulgrew is returning to the Star Trek universe. The actress who played Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seasons from 1995 to 2001 on Star Trek: Voyager has been cast as the lead in Nickelodeon’s upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy series, an animated show that hopes to bring more kids into the world of Trek.
“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy,” said Mulgrew during today’s “Star Trek Universe” panel at virtual Nycc. “How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. Mark Rogers shoots film and television stills and key art in Australia and internationally. Here he shines some light on what he calls the best and the worst job on set, and outlines how lower budget films can maximise resources to ensure the best quality images.
The key challenge for a stills photographer is to shoot iconic images that capture the essence and emotion of a film. Other than the trailer, this is the only way the film can be marketed and communicated to audiences. These images are the first impression the public will have of a movie, and a hero still or poster can often be the most lasting image associated with it over time.
