It's taken a while, but it feels like we're hitting peak "Star Trek: Voyager" nostalgia these days. It was not always like this: On the heels of "The Next Generation" movies and the sprawling war saga of "Deep Space Nine," the premise of "Voyager," which hurled a Federation ship to the other side of the universe where it presumably would encounter nothing familiar, wasn't as compelling. Initial new aliens like the Kazon were duds, and when the show tried to course-correct, it may have overdone it on the Borg storylines. For the first time, but not the last, it began to feel like there was too much "Star Trek."
However, fans have been going back to "Voyager" and discovering it more old-school charms since the streaming era kicked in -- and especially during the pandemic lockdown. The animated "Star Trek: Prodigy" serves as a sequel of sorts, bringing back multiple...

Studiocanal launched a brand new official podcast – and the host might just be familiar to Film Stories listeners.
This is a bit of an odd story for me to write. Basically, well, because I’m in it. I’ll see how I get on.
The rather fine folks at Studiocanal have launched an official podcast, digging into the huge archive of movies under its stewardship. It’s arriving regularly, and as well as focusing on a movie of the month, there’s a broader exploration of other bits and bobs too.
Don’t take our word for it. Here’s Jamie McHale, the head of theatrical marketing at the studio: “We’re thrilled to be launching an official podcast to celebrate our incredible library of titles and upcoming theatrical releases. Star Trek: Voyager debuted 30 years ago this month, and it’s a kick to look back at the show’s earliest days. For example, the Voyager cast are the old-timers now, as Enterprise, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Lower Decks, several feature films, and now Section 31 have all followed. But, when Voyager started, “typecasting” was still very much a thing, the notion being that acting in a Star Trek production could lead to trouble landing subsequent roles after a series ended because the public and entertainment industry so strongly associated an actor with their Star Trek role. More than just about anyone other than Patrick Stewart, Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has avoided that fate.
“This is such a great job and, for me, Janeway is such a great role that even if a stigma were attached to it later on, that would just be tough luck," Mulgrew told me in...

Prime Video (via Nerdist.com) has released the first clip from tomorrow's fourth episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and it introduces a character fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work have been waiting to see brought to life on screen for a very long time.
In the clip, we see The Stranger get himself into a spot of bother when he attempts to pull branch from a tree to fashion his wizard's staff. In a moment that recalls Merry and Pippin falling foul to Old Man Willow in the book, the Stranger is trapped and consumed by the tree until old Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear) comes to the rescue.
If you've read Tolkien's seminal trilogy, you should be very familiar with this mysterious character, who was introduced along with his wife Goldberry when Frodo and his company made their way through the Old Forest in The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for its second season later this month, and Prime Video has now released the first full clip and a new TV spot featuring the return of a character who appeared to be killed-off in the season 1 finale, and our first look at... Saruman?
Of course, any Tolkien fan would almost certainly have been aware that Isildur - the future King of Gondor who ultimately cuts the One Ring from Sauron's hand - wasn't really dead, but his father Elendil and the rest of his people believe he is.
In the clip, we see Isildur and a new character, Estrid, stop to help what appears to be a group of travellers in need before being ambushed by Wild Men. Things look bleak for Isildur, but elven archer Arondir comes to the rescue by unleashing a flurry of arrows into the bandits.

The 1995 film "12 Monkeys" was one of the few times a Terry Gilliam film wasn't beset with chaos and production problems. Gilliam is notoriously unlucky — not to mention incredibly headstrong — so many of his features were only made after last-minute disasters, deaths, or other major catastrophes. One can see Gilliam's unluckiness in play in Keith Fulton's and Louis Pepe's 2002 documentary "Lost in La Mancha," which traced the director's first, stalled attempt to make "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote." Also, one doesn't need to be a deep-cut cineaste to know all about the issues Gilliam had with his 1983 sci-fi film "Brazil," a picture that was re-cut multiple times.
For "12 Monkeys," though, everything seemed to work out okay. Based on Chris Marker's 1962 short film "La Jetée," the film begins in 2035 after most of humanity has been killed by a lethal virus. Survivors were forced into underground prisons,...

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for its second season later this month, and Prime Video has now released an action-packed final trailer highlighting the conflict that erupts throughout Middle-earth in the aftermath of Sauron's return in the season 1 finale.

Sauron may be a powerful Dark Lord, but he’s a powerful Dark Lord who does not handle rejection well.
That is apparent in a new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which sees him clashing with Galadriel, who rebuked his offer to rule together in the Season 1 finale. And after being ousted from Mordor by Adar (which we’ll learn all about in new episodes), it looks like he’ll cozy up to Celebrimbor in Eregion — much to the latter’s detriment.

Sauron is the architect of chaos in a new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, premiering Thursday, Aug. 29 on Prime Video.

During the first season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we were introduced to a mysterious new villain known as Adar, and the character's backstory turned out to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the show.
"Adar" is the Sindarin word for father, and we'd soon learn that the Orcs saw their leader as more of a paternal figure. J.R.R. Tolkien's original history of Middle Earth claimed that Morgoth captured some Elves right after their "awakening" and used dark magic and other twisted means to create a new form of life that would be loyal only to him.
During a conversation with Galadriel, Adar admits that he was indeed one of the first Elves, or "Moriondor," taken by Melkor and transformed into one of the first Orcs.

Ascended rock deity David Bowie appeared on TV and in movies as early as 1968, only shortly after the release of his first record. His first leading performance came in 1972 with the release of Nicolas Roeg's sci-fi satire "The Man Who Fell to Earth," a film about an alien who comes to Earth and becomes distracted by drugs, TV, and other unhealthy creature comforts. Bowie later played himself in Uli Edel's harrowing 1981 J.D. flick "Christiane F.," in addition to starring in the smoky vampire film "The Hunger" and terse Pow drama "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence." A younger generation fell in love with Bowie because of 1986's puppet film "Labyrinth," while he was cleverly cast as Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ."
In 1993, when director Renny Harlin was preparing to make his mountainside actioner and Sylvester Stallone vehicle "Cliffhanger," he very much wanted Bowie to play the film's villain.

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

The first trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was released online yesterday afternoon, and Prime Video has now followed-up with a special "Look Inside" featurette spotlighting quite a bit of new footage.
The video takes us behind-the-scenes of the sophomore season of the Lotr prequel series, as the main cast members bring us up to speed on their respective characters.
By far the biggest talking point from the trailer is the return of Sauron, who has now taken his Elven "Annatar" form in an effort to hide out in Eregion. If the show follows the lore, the "Giver of Gifts" will befriend Celebrimbor and aid him in the making of the Nine (that were given to men) and Seven Rings (gifted to the Dwarves) of Power.

Reacher fans have just learned when the action-packed drama series will return for its third season. Alan Ritchson, who portrays the title character, has shared when Reacher Season 3 will premiere on Prime Video.
In an Instagram Stories post, Ritchson shared an image that featured the words, "The biggest name in action hits again in 2025," followed by the title of the series. This seems to confirm that Reacher will not return until next year, which will have been over one year since Season 2 premiered on Prime Video. Production on Season 3 began ahead of the Season 2 premiere last December. It is unclear when production will wrap, although Ritchson was spotted filming the new season as recently as April 2024.

The first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has been debuted (via SFFGazette.com), teasing the ramifications of Sauron's return to Middle-earth.
The Dark Lord is in disguise after sowing discord in the elven kingdom of Eregion by manipulating Celebrimbor into forging the show's titular rings of power. We saw three of them in the season 1 finale, though Sauron still has plenty of work to do: remember, there are seven rings for the Dwarves, nine for mortal men, and his own, secret "One Ring to Rule Them All."
There are plenty of exciting teases throughout this trailer, including a glimpse of the Stranger wielding a wooden staff. While not confirmed, all signs point to him being a young Gandalf and it looks like his story will remain key to The Rings of Power.
Elsewhere, you'll spot Mount Doom, a Great Eagle, and even...

Jimmi Simpson brings his versatile talent to Dark Matter, playing multiple roles in a series about alternate realities. However, he almost never became an actor at all. Simpson's life took a major turn when he arbitrarily picked a theater class in college that he could skip, originally wanting to be an English teacher. Because he decided to check into the class halfway through the semester, a series of events ultimately led to Simpson becoming the Emmy, BAFTA, and SAG nominated actor of Westworld, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and more.
As Mary Lightly in Psych and Gavin Orsay in House of Cards, Jimmi Simpson showed that he's the kind of cinematic thief who steals every scene he's in. He goes all-in with any performance, from the unhinged hilarity of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to the simmering and bitter (Unsolved). He's perhaps best known from the sci-fi genre, starring in...

We could have received another popular cinematic universe if Universal had been successful in kickstarting the Dark Universe. Sadly, 2017’s The Mummy, which was supposed to kickstart the universe involving the classic Universal monsters failed hard and the plans were scrapped. However, the failure was taken very positively by The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman.
Annabelle Wallis and Tom Cruise in a still from The Mummy
Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, was a reboot of the classic Mummy franchise and featured a unique take. It was very different from the iconic Brendan Fraser movies most audiences were familiar with. The critics and the audiences bashed the film for several weak points. Despite being such a massive mess, Kurtzman stated that the film taught him a lot.

Carrie Fisher took the virginity of Indiana Jones. At least, that's how she told it while she was alive. Specifically, that's what she told me. In her own words: "I wrote it with George [Lucas.] We wrote Indiana Jones losing his virginity to Mata Hari. It went very well."
I had been asking about her work on the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, so this answer came a bit out of left field. However, it's a little-known fact that Fisher worked as a writer on many George Lucas projects, doing an uncredited polish on the scripts for the prequels and even coming up with adventures for Indiana Jones to go on in his TV series, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."
So, how did Indiana Jones actually lose his virginity, and what part did Fisher play?

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.

The acclaimed adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s short story remains a visually immersive descent and a chilling portrayal of loss
In the opening sequence of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, a little girl in a red raincoat drowns in a pond in the English countryside, as her parents are nestled comfortably in a nearby estate. Roeg cuts frantically between the girl tooling around the pond in her boots and her father John (Donald Sutherland) at work inside, examining a projected image of an Italian cathedral he intends to restore. The cutting works as suspense, leaving the audience utterly helpless to stop this inevitable tragedy from happening, but it has a much more sophisticated agenda than goosing our emotions. Through color and montage effects, tied to shots like a spill that bleeds over John’s slide, Roeg dramatizes the present and predicts the future all at once, signaling the heartbreak and terror to come.

Something a viewer might instantly note about Christopher Nolan's new hit biopic "Oppenheimer" is that the film's star, Cillian Murphy, doesn't look an awful lot like J. Robert Oppenheimer. Murphy has an intense gaze and a bird-like demeanor, carrying -- in many of his roles -- both a brisk openness and a mysterious threat. Oppenheimer himself, meanwhile, looked more like a beleaguered dad, a scientist who carefully thought about what he said. Eventually, in later interviews, he looked beaten down by the enormity of what he was asked to do. Murphy, an immensely talented actor, captured all the emotional beats correctly and even altered his physical mannerisms, but one would hardly confuse the two men should they be in the same room together.
Murphy has previously spoken about how he had been eagerly awaiting the phone call from Nolan, asking him to appear as a lead in one of the director's movies.

Movies starring famous musicians are nothing new, nor were they in 1986 when David Bowie starred in Labyrinth. But few can claim to have provided their rock star-turned-actors with a role as iconic as Labyrinth's Goblin King Jareth. Bowie's furniture-chewing performance in this family fantasy-adventure cemented his acting career in a way his more personal films like The Man Who Fell to Earth couldn't, and made the icon of music a sought-after icon of cinema all the same. The movie's musical element offers Bowie a chance to shine, attracting fans of the singer to see their hero in his element while still surprising them with his turn as this truly unique villain. Labyrinth is still cherished all around the world today, and in no small part due to Bowie's performance in scenes such as his 'Magic Dance' sequence. But did you know the memorable lines that begin 'Magic Dance' were...
