Shudder has acquired Push, the new film written and directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell. The horror streaming platform previously acquired Charbonier’s and Powell’s thriller The Boy Behind the Door in 2021.

The two creators, who have been friends since childhood, were interviewed by 1428 Elm after The Boy Behind the Door came to Shudder. During the interview, we talked about that film and their other horror/thriller The Djinn, which premiered around the same time.

Both of their previous films placed focus on kids, and both starred Ezra Dewey. With Push, Charbonier and Powell step into the world of home invasion, telling the story of Natalie Flores, a realtor who is holding an open house at a huge property she is tasked with selling. David Charbonier and Justin Powell (The Boy Behind the Door, The Djinn) are back with upcoming horror movie Push, and the film has found a home at Shudder this week.

The highly anticipated horror movie, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival and will make its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California this weekend, will make its exclusive streaming debut on Shudder later this year.

Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Raúl Castillo (Smile 2) lead the cast.

The film follows Natalie Flores (Sanz), a pregnant realtor who is attacked by a sadistic killer (Castillo) at her open house, sending her into premature labor. Up against a physiological ticking clock, Natalie must find a way to escape before she gives birth.

Shudder had pull for “Push,” as the all-horror-all-the-time streamer has acquired the home invasion thriller ahead of its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, Calif. later this month. Kiernan Shipka and Mckenna Grace are teaming up for The Nowhere Game, a high-stakes survival thriller produced by Erik Feig’s Picturestart. Shipka, fresh off The Last Showgirl, and Grace, set to appear in the next Scream film, will take on roles that push them to the limit.

David Charbonier and Justin Douglas Powell, the duo behind The Djinn, are directing. The script, written by Alex Pototsky, landed on the 2023 Black List. WME Independent and UTA Independent Film Group will handle domestic sales, while WME Independent is taking charge of international rights.

The story follows Carin (Grace) and Allie (Shipka), two friends on a road trip that turns into a nightmare. They’re abducted by a ruthless predator and forced into a brutal survival game, broadcast live to an unseen audience.

Given only a brief head start and minimal supplies, they must escape through an unforgiving wilderness while being hunted.

If you’ve ever purchased a house, you’ll know how the promotional photographs work. They’re carefully framed, lit and lensed – with varying degrees of skill – to give the impression that everything is bigger and higher quality. UTA Independent Film Group has boarded U.S. sales for horror-thriller “Push.” The film, which stars Alicia Sanz and Raúl Castillo, will have its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival.

Sanz’s credits include “Simulant” and “El Cid.” Castillo’s credits include “The Inspection” and “Army of the Dead.”

The film follows a woman (Cornish) who wakes up in a police interrogation room with no memory of the prior night and the accusations against her may have life altering implications. However, something is not quite right in this police station.

An Indonesian remake of Justin Powell and David Charbonier’s intense 2021 thriller The Boy Behind the Door, titled Monster, is on its way. Netflix has unveiled images from the twisted thriller ahead of its debut on the streaming service.

In Monster, “After being abducted and taken to a desolate house, a girl sets out to rescue her friend and escape from their malicious kidnapper.”

As of now, Netflix hasn’t set an official date for Monster, only that it’s coming soon.

Although The Djinn beat it to release in the US by a few months, The Boy Behind the Door is writer/director David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s first feature. Unlike that film, this has a plot rooted in the all too real horrors of child abductions and human trafficking. And it’s all the more shocking and disturbing for it.

The film opens with Bobby and Kevin (Ezra Dewey; The Djinn) in the trunk of a car. A brief flashback shows their violent abduction from a park. Back in the present Kevin is taken from the trunk by the unseen and unnamed Creep. Left alone Bobby manages to escape the car’s trunk, only to find himself in the middle of nowhere.

Before he can make an escape he hears Kevin screaming inside the house.

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s debut The Boy Behind the Door was a well-executed abduction horror scored through with both tenderness and an uncommon cruel streak. Their follow-up, The Djinn, stars one of that film’s lead actors, Ezra Dewey, and locks him once again into the same kids-in-confinement genre. Despite light 80s stylings on the soundtrack, this is unfortunately a much weaker effort that both lacks internal logic and struggles for inspiration.

Dewey plays Dylan, a mute boy living with single father Michael (Rob Brownstein), who believes his disability has caused his mother’s absence from their life. So one night, when Michael is out doing his radio DJ gig, Dylan – who earlier found occultist tome the Book of Shadows at the back...

Ever-growing gem of a streaming platform, Shudder, has given us some great platform-exclusive horror flicks, including recent abduction thriller The Boy Behind The Door, which is worth your look for the nail-biting suspense. More often than not, anything labelled a "Shudder Original" is pretty solid. It pains me to assert they have a rare miss. Their new exclusive feature from writer/director Amelia Moses, Bleed With Me, is a stiff and sluggish attempt at an atmospheric descent into bloodthirsty madness. What opens with a promising grim moodiness and striking, secluded setting becomes a slog through slow-burn horror conventions while mediocre actors behind sterile characters neglect to add any strange life.

Since the dawn of Shudder, the streaming service has been fairly consistent in releasing fantastic original horror flicks. Their new release, The Boy Behind The Door, the feature debut from writer/director pair David Charbonier and Justin Powell is no exception. The film takes a terribly dark subject, child trafficking, and spins a pulse-pounding thriller without exploitation or falling into tasteless cliche. Instead, Charbonier and Powell opt for a straightforward, dark and never dull abduction thriller in a remote mountainous setting that lends to a hellish atmosphere. The Boy Behind the Door is in the vein of Misery, sans hamminess, and with the added intensity of talented child leads who you'll literally be on the edge of your seat rooting for.

Not wasting a moment, the film opens with a rusty maroon sedan crawling up a winding mountain road to a lone house atop a hill, as an ominous spacy...

You can’t fault the writing-directing duo of David Charbonier and Justin Powell for reckless overreaching: Their first feature, “The Djinn”, stirred terror around just one boy in an apartment. Their second, which premiered at Fantastic Fest last fall, cautiously ups the ante to two boys and one whole house. “The Boy Behind the Door” is a more polished affair than its predecessor, with no supernatural aspect to the child endangerment this time. But . Shudder is adding the film to its streaming service July 29.

After a brief, alarming prologue, we properly meet our protagonists in a moment of calm beforehand — two 12-year-old lads playing catch in a field en route to a Little League game. When their ball rolls down an embankment, Kevin goes to retrieve it but does not return. Bobby (Lonnie Chavis from “This Is Us”) eventually goes looking for him, which doesn’t end well for him either.

Young Bobby and his best friend, Kevin, are abducted on their way to their baseball game. When Bobby breaks out of the trunk of the car he's trapped in he sees that they've been taken to a home in the middle of nowhere, just rolling hills and pumpjacks as far as the eye can see. Unwilling to leave his best friend behind Bobby enters the house and tries to find Kevin without being caught by their kidnapper. The arrival of a second stranger only adds to the urgency of the moment.    The Boy Behind the Door is all about the primarily silent tension and the game of cat-and-mouse that happens between Bobby and the strangers.
