Cbm: Tell us a little bit about Open Season: Scared Silly? David: It’s a Continuation of Open Season One. It doesn’t refer much to Open Season 2 or 3, but it is a continuation of where Open Season 1 stopped. In Open Season 4 Elliot tells a campfire story about a werewolf. Boog believes it’s true and Elliot has to try and get Boog to get over his fear of this werewolf. They see something that they believe is an actual werewolf. Shaw the hunter reappears in this film and he finds out that there is a werewolf lose that means it’s his ticket to get hunting season open again. He convinces the town and the sheriff to reopen open season again. Cbm: The Werewolf is such a big part of the story in Open Season: Scared Silly. How did that character come about? David: That was something that was presented to me.

Landing in Us cinemas in just over a month’s time, Free Birds marks Relativity Media’s entrance into the world of animation.
The comedy, previously titled Turkeys, boasts a fantastic voice cast, led by Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, and Amy Poehler. And that, alone, should be encouragement enough.
With just a few more weeks before it touches down across the Atlantic, the studio has launched the new trailer and poster over on Fandango, giving a new look at the adventurous little birds.
In this hilarious, adventurous buddy comedy for audiences of all ages, directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!), two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.

Previously titled Turkeys, Free Birds is set to hit theatres this November, in plenty of time for Thanksgiving across the pond.
The animated comedy-adventure movie sees Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson lend their voices as the leading duo, starring as two turkeys who are determined get their kind off the menu for the Thanksgiving festivities for good.
We’ve got four and a half months left on the clock before Relativity put the film into theatres, and they’ve launched the first trailer over on Apple.

When you think about all the children.s movies out there, animated or live action, Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that just doesn.t get that much play (though Chinese New Year also gets a similar cold shoulder). But Relativity Media.s Free Birds - formerly known by the less-than-clever name Turkeys - is here to change that. In fact, it.s here to change Thanksgiving forever. The film.s first trailer, courtesy of Apple, is actually funnier than I thought it would be, but not by much. That said, I.m still pretty into the premise, and I think it could allow for a wide range of clever storytelling, though I.m not entirely sure I trust the writers involved - including John J. Strauss (The Wild) and David I. Stern (Open Season 2), who did the story, and writers Jimmy Hayward and Scott Mosier. If they completely...

Good news for fans of Shane Acker, director of the acclaimed animated film 9 from a few years back, he's lined up another animation project. Deadline/Variety report that Reel FX Creative Studios (of Open Season 2 & 3, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Turkeys) has signed on Shane Acker to direct their new CG animated feature Beasts Of Burden, based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name. The comics are about a team of investigative animals — five dogs and a cat named Orphan. Ever since first seeing 9 I've been keeping a close watch on Acker, who has lined up a few projects, none of which have hit the screen yet. Beasts of Burden is a Dark Horse Comics team of animals, created by writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson, that investigate different paranormal events that occur in their small neighborhood of Burden Hill. The screenplay for the big screen...

There are very few names in the film world quite as enigmatic as actor/director Crispin Hellion Glover. Best known for turns in a wide range of films such as Charlie’S Angels to the sequel Open Season 2 (side note: Wtf?) as well as his directorial efforts What Is It? And It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine (side note 2: awesome titles) Glover is very much a cult icon.

More than two decades removed from its last animated feature (the ever-nostalgic All Dogs Go to Heaven), MGM is reentering the animated game with director David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie and co-director Monsters, Inc.). According to Variety, the studio and Silverman will go to bat with an adaptation of the Jarrett Krosoczka children's book Punk Farm. Per the report, the pic was originally penned by Jim Hecht (Ice Age: The Meltdown) with Silverman waiting to direct a rewrite by David Stern (Open Season 2 & 3). Krosoczka's book follows a quintet of barnyard animals with a fondness for underground punk rock (I'm thinking Sex Pistols meets Selena Gomez). There is no word on the project's production timeline although it's worthy of mentioning that the film is only the second major project taken on by the studio since its financial woes came to a head last December. The other project is the Vin Diesel producer/star vehicle,...

MGM is is throwing their hat into the animation ring with a feature adaptation of Jarrett Krosoczka's children's book, Punk Farm. The film will be directed by David Silverman (The Simpsons Movie) from a script by Jim Hecht with a rewrite from David Stern. The story revolves "around five barnyard animals who form an underground rock band." The film will be produced by Kevin Messick and Anita Camarata under their Prana Studios banner, who will also handle the CG animation.
This is the first film for the studio since 1989's All Dogs Go to Heaven and the second film since emerging from recovering from bankruptcy. MGM has co-financed David Fincher's Girl With a Dragon Tattoo at Sony and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters at Paramount. Vin Diesel is set to star and produce MGM's first film alone, The Machine.

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Four Lions For at least half of its runtime, Four Lions is a relatively good-natured comedy, foremost because its characters seem like relatively good-natured people. This is obviously in spite of the film's subject matter, which focuses on a group of young Muslim men aspiring to become Jihadi Islamist terrorists. Like 2009's In the Loop, the film aims to highlight the absurdity of contentious political issues, making light of a dark topic with some smartly observed satire. But there are two major differences between In the Loop and Four Lions. The first is that Four Lions is a sillier film. Its committed to the realism of its semi-documentary style, but only as much as, say, This Is Spinal Tap.

Here we go with the first Film Diary post in its new weekly slot. It’s been pretty quiet so far, but from here on in it’s going to get a lot more bumpy. Remember, if you’re willing to offer me suggestions for what to watch, I’m more than willing to take them on board- if I don’t own them, I’ll even go and source them so I can share the love.
For anyone who missed it, here’s the skinny. Basically, what I’m presenting here is my attempt to chart a whole year’s worth of film-watching – something I have wanted to do for some time now. The aim is to post frequently, chronicling every film I watch this year – both offering reviews and setting myself the ultimate goal of watching (and writing about) as many films as humanly possible, without abandoning the necessary functions of normal existence…...

Boog and Elliot star in Sony Pictures Animation.s family comedy adventure Open Season, a Columbia Pictures release.

I really wanted to like this movie… but poor animation and a mediocre storyline leave this film trailing in the woods.
Boog is preparing for a trip with the guys when everyone, including his best friend Elliot, decides to bail out. Angered and hurt, Boog wanders on his own until he stumbles upon a Russian circus and a beautiful lady-bear named Ursa. Boog is so enamored by Ursa that he does not realize that Doug, another circus bear, is plotting his escape by trading places with Boog. When Boog’s friends realize that Doug is an impostor, they ban together to get their friend back.
This film seems thrown together simply for profit. The jokes were bland, and the characters that were once brought to life by Martin Lawrence...

Here's an animated film for the vegetarians out there, something to put on the shelf next to "Chicken Run": it's called "Turkeys," and it's about two gobblers who discover a time machine, travel back to pre-Colonial times and stop their kind from being made synonymous with Thanksgiving dinner. I'm not sure what else they suggest to take their place on the menu, but I'm guessing it won't be another kind of meat, which would make this like an adaptation of a Chik-fil-a commercial.
Variety reports that the turkey duo will be voiced by Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, which implies that these birds will be lovable loser-types: slackers, surfers or even stoners. "Turkeys" will be a family film though, despite the fact that it's being executive produced Peter Farrelly, so don't expect explicit drug jokes or anything too raunchy.

"Turkeys" will be a family film though, despite the fact that it's being executive produced Peter Farrelly, so don't expect explicit drug jokes or anything too raunchy.

Since 3-D movies are continuing to captivate and thrill moviegoers, I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone decided to combine the new technology with the most lucrative literary property of all time: The Bible. Paramount Pictures and former Walden Media co-founder Cary Granat (Journey to the Center of the Earth) are reportedly in the process of putting together a new, visually exciting take on the story of Adam and Eve called In The Beginning. A script has been written by John Fusco (Young Guns, The Forbidden Kingdom) and will be directed by David Cunningham (The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising). Now obviously this could be a pretty successful venture, assuming that the various church groups get behind it, but I don't know if it's necessarily full-blown blockbuster material. The budget is reportedly in the $30 million range, and the visual effects are being done by Reel Fx,...

Deadline Hollywood's Mike Fleming has been scooping out exclusives faster than a fat kid eating their breakfast cereal. Today the ex-Variety reporter has it on good faith that a live-action telling of the Book of Genesis, specifically the act of Creation and the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. No matter what your faith is (or isn't), put aside that for a moment and consider this idea from a pure cinematic viewpoint: the act of Creation, told with today's special effects. And in 3-D.
The movie is called In the Beginning and is being shaped by Paramount Pictures and Cary Granat, the former Walden Media executive that brought together The Chronicles of Narnia for his former employer. According to Fleming the script for In the Beginning is being written by Hidalgo screenwriter John Fusco. Paramount's lined up television director David Cunningham to make his feature debut.

Last year the Annie Awards caused quite a stir when Kung Fu Panda swept Wall-e [1] in every category. Of course, Wall-e still went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it's interesting to note that this year, with so many great animated movies to choose from, the Annies decided to go back and honour Pixar's Up with their top prize. Needless to say, Up is now a heavy favourite at the Oscars (if it wasn't already), but how did the other categories shake down for the Annie Awards? Pete Docter also received the award for Directing, but it was The Princess and the Frog and Coraline that split many of the other categories. Personally I was just pleased to see Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach pick up the Writing award for Fantastic Mr. Fox. After the jump, you can see all of the feature film categories...

I’m a fan of animated movies and I have to start off by saying that Blu-Ray allows for a very crisp translation to your HD television. If you’re going to watch an animated film, this is the way to do it. Open Season 2’s story is pretty straightforward. Despite solid backing from his bear friend Boog, mule-deer Elliot goes through some serious pre-wedding jitters in anticipation of marrying the beautiful Giselle. When aptly-named wiener dog Mr. Weenie gets dog-napped (by his original owner), it’s the perfect excuse for Elliot to put off his vows to save his friend. Standing against Elliot’s squad of “wilds” are the house pets dogs led by disgruntled male poodle Fifi. Fifi has a vendetta against wild animals because of a scar and never wavers from his anti-wild crusade. What does all of this have to do with the movie’s...

Welcome to another edition of Insert Caption -- that game that pushes you to get down with your creative bad self. Last week we asked you to get a little funky with an image from Open Season 2, which just hit DVD earlier this week. Congrats to our two winners for using their animal instincts to create the following witty captions:
1. "Oh man....they got Fred. I told him that cheap cow costume was a bad idea. But would he listen? Nooooo." -- Chaz K.
2. "And the animal kingdom froze in fear when they realized Dick Cheney was once again jobless, and would soon be bringing his rifle back into the woods. " -- Kathi F.

This week we're tapping into our own freak-ish abilities in order to come up with an outstanding caption for the cool-looking sci-fi thriller Push (in theaters February 6), starring Chris Evans,...

Pictured (clockwise from upper left): Pride and Glory, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, RockNRolla, Hulk Vs.
I'm shocked -- shocked!! -- that I can recommend a rental on all four featured titles. I'll search more diligently for titles to skip in coming weeks.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Woody Allen's sojourn across Europe continues in this critically-praised comedy / drama / romance, featuring the Academy Award-nominated Penélope Cruz, plus Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, and Rebecca Hall. James Rocchi called it "a bright, cool comedy of manners and mores, as refreshing and subtly intoxicating as a tall drink of sangria." Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.
Pride and Glory
Though some unfavorably compared it with We Own the Night, I much preferred Gavin O'Connor's striking, stirring New York City police 'brothers and father at odds' drama. Sure, it's familiar territory, but it struck me as piercing and emotionally authentic. With Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Jon Voight,...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed This week is a breath of fresh air compared to recent weeks as we have more than just one title to talk about with Jason Bourne coming to Blu-ray and the film I deemed to be the best of 2008 coming home on DVD and Blu-ray. We also have the very good Roman Polanski doc and the old school Pink Panther Collection arrives with the original Pink Panther available on DVD and Blu-ray. Vicky Cristina Barcelona Yup, Woody Allen's romance was my favorite film of 2008 and Genius Products didn't even send me a screener. Boooooo! But I have already ordered the Blu-ray release from Amazon and expect it any day and I suggest you do the same. This is a great little film with two of the better performances of the year from Penelope Cruz and most notably Rebecca Hall.
