Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.
There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.

People of Earth was one of the rare shows that critics and audiences agreed was great; it currently has an 89% critics' score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death...

Mistakes happen, and it's always an interesting thing when audiences catch mistakes in movies. Not only did those mistakes have to make their way on set, but several cast and crew members also had to have completely missed it before it got to the editing room.
Fans love to spot movie mistakes. Sometimes these mistakes even make their movies better.
A Stormtrooper Bumped Their Head Star Wars (1977)
The Star Wars franchise has had its upsetting lows and astronomical highs, including many details fans have mulled over and adored for decades. One particular detail all the way back from the original Star Wars film has become such a beloved moment, that fans make an effort to point it out upon rewatches. In a scene where Stormtroopers are investigating a control room, one Stormtrooper happens to bonk his head on the door frame on the way in.
The true identity of this Stormtrooper's actor remains a mystery.

Plot: A suburban dad (Tim Robinson) becomes hellbent on being BFFs with his charismatic new neighbour (Paul Rudd).
Review: Confession time – this movie is my introduction to Tim Robinson. Sure, I’ve had folks name-drop his show I Think You Should Leave, and it’s always been on my list of stuff to check out. But, I walked into this more-or-less fresh, not knowing what to expect. What I got was one of the most cringe-inducing comedies I’ve ever seen – and I loved every second of it.
To be sure, this kind of humour isn’t for everyone. There were times while I was watching Friendship in the jam-packed screening that I’m sure I annoyed the people sitting next to me by how many times I sunk in my seat, covering my face with my hands and repeating “no, no, no” louder than I should. That’s the effect this had on me.

Moana may have taken on the ocean virtually alone in “Moana” — at least, until she dragged Maui along — but that isn’t the case in Disney’s latest sequel.
In “Moana 2,” our wayfinding hero sets out on another voyage. This time, she’s called upon by the ancestors to locate an island hidden by a god, specifically with the intent to cut off other island peoples from each other. The mission is decidedly more dangerous than in the first film, and that means she needs a crew.
Here’s who’s on that crew, and where you might recognize everyone’s voices from in our complete “Moana 2” cast and character guide now that the film is streaming on Disney+.

Netflix’s latest British miniseries, Toxic Town is centered around the real-life legal battle between the Corby Borough Council and the townsfolk whose children suffered birth deformities due to toxic waste pollution resulting from deliberate neglect and mismanagement by the authorities involved in the steel plant land reclamation. As the makers decide to approach the narrative from the perspective of the victim’s families and the residents of the industrial town, it is important to note that maternal figures gained prominence – the ones who were most affected/ blamed for a predicament beyond their control, as patriarchal society functioned that way, and still does. Aside from this aspect, the series also focuses on the bureaucratic corruption which preys on the socioeconomic vulnerabilities of small townships and ends up ruining the future of upcoming generations in diabolically selfish pursuits.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is shedding some light on the status of Taika Waititi's Star Wars project, which has been shrouded in mystery for some time. In a recent interview with Deadline, Kennedy, who is expected to retire sometime in 2025, touched on the Thor: Ragnarok director’s Star Wars movie.
“Well, I keep waiting for Taika (Waititi), and he is working with another writer now,” Kennedy began. “He’s so busy. I love him. I think if we ever do get a script from Taika it’s going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down, it’s tricky,” Kennedy said.

Taika Waititi has been attached to an untitledStar Warsproject for several years now. A worldwide pandemic has come and gone, industry-wide strikes shutdown all Hollywood productions for the good part of a year, and Star Wars has failed to release one film since his hiring. Of course, Lucasfilm is largely to blame for that last part, especially since they have a revolving door of filmmakers walking in and out of the studio. However, it seems Waititi shares a good chunk of the blame for his Star Wars film remaining in the script phase and causing an indefinite delay.
During an interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy discussed a variety of topics concerning the future of the Star Wars universe. Among the projects mentioned were Waititi's untitled film, which apparently does not have a script yet. It's a simple, yet frustrating reason, especially since he has been attached to the...

Audiences love a great love story, and while every medium has its fair share of spectacular romances, television is one that truly allows romance to thrive. The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.
Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.
The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).
A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.
The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.
The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.
Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.
The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Out of 400 evaluated directors, five were named the most inclusive: Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green and Kasi Lemmons.
Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

The top distributors — companies responsible for bringing top-ranking diverse films to audiences — were listed by the quantity of how many films released: Universal (29), Sony Pictures (21), Warner Bros (18) and, for smaller distributors, A24 (14), MGM (10) and Bleecker Street (9).
A panel discussing the results featuring Smith, Sumi Parekh, Executive Director, Group Effort Initiative, Tracy Oliver, Screenwriter, Director, Producer and Showrunner, Jesse Williams, Actor, Director, Activist, Dewayne Perkins, Writer, Actor, Producer, and Amy White, Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Adobe, is set for Friday at Adobe House on the ground at the Sundance Film Festival.

Apple TV+ renewed the cheeky comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin for a second season, but it has since been scrapped. Starring Noel Fielding as the titular bandit, Dick Turpin fictionalizes and lampoons the exploits of the real-life highwayman from British lore who, along with his Essex Gang, set out to become the greatest highwayman in English history. Like many projects involving Fielding, Dick Turpin utilizes surrealist comedy to pick apart the romanticized figure from history, but does so without losing any of the accessible charm that any comedy show should have.

No official release date has been announced for the Season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Nami Melumad, who composes the music for the series, says to expect “surprises." Melumad, while speaking with Screen Rant about her newest project, the Pixar mini-series, Dream Productions, teased season 3 of the series, which currently boasts a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. Melumad also composed scores for the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
One thing for sure, though, Melumad said fans shouldn’t expect another musical episode like “Subspace Rhapsody” from Season 2. “There’s not another musical episode, but it’s my favorite season,” Melumad said of the forthcoming third installment of Strange New Worlds, which stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn.
“I have a very high bar for Star Trek, and I really enjoyed it. There are very different genres in there. There will be surprises.

I Still Can’t Believe “Blue Bloods” Was Canceled Despite Being One of the Most-Watched Series on CBS
CBS’ police procedural drama Blue Bloods was one of the most-watched series on network TV. The Tom Selleck-led drama centered on the Reagans, a family who has a great number of members working for law enforcement. The show ran for 14 seasons and had incredible viewership numbers despite its time slot.
The series was unceremoniously canceled ahead of its fourteenth season with Swat replacing its time slot. Everyone from critics, the fans, and the actors themselves campaigned hard to get the series back on again but CBS did not budge. Despite so much demand, I still cannot figure out why the network canceled the series.

A massive Pacific Palisades mansion, that was reportedly featured in Succession, has been destroyed by the fires raging through Los Angeles.
The house, reportedly owned by tech executive Austin Russell, appears to be the same palatial estate shown in the fourth season premiere of the hit HBO drama, where the Roy siblings were holed up as they strategized over their next move to take on their father.
The Daily Mail has published photos showing the house reduced to rubble and charred beams.
The Mail adds that nothing remains of the once elaborate interior, highlighted in this video tour, as the four-story property has collapsed in on itself, with even the home’s panic rooms and retinal scanner outside of the master bedroom damaged by the fire. Outside, while the house’s fire pit remains intact, it is now black with soot and the outdoor pool contains murky black water.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

2024 was another big year for television as new series like Shõgun, Nobody Wants This, Fallout, and The Penguin became major talking points. While those shows earned a lot of acclaim, awards recognition, and viewership, other shows that debuted in 2024 didn't get the same appreciation. Because only a loyal few were aware of their existence, they ended up getting axed after their debut season.
Additionally, other TV cancellations in 2024 were associated with shows that either premiered the previous year or ran for two or more seasons. Seeing the headlines that these series now have a short lifespan was heartbreaking for the small but mighty fanbases. From new series like Kaos and The Brothers Sun to multi-season gems like Chucky and Our Flag Means Death, these canceled shows in 2024 deserve more seasons and a better ending.

Taika Waititi will soon be adding another trophy to the case.
The prolific writer, director, and producer will receive the prestigious Norman Lear Award from the Producers Guild of America. Abrams, Lorne Michaels, Dick Wolf, Jerry Bruckheimer, Gail Berman, Aaron Spelling, David E. Kelley, and Norman Lear himself.
Waititi made a big splash in TV with the supernatural comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, which was based on his independent mockumentary of the same name. “Yellowjackets” and “Scream” star Jasmin Savoy Brown has a new podcast, titled “Today in Gay.”
Described as a “short, joyful daily news podcast by and for the queer community,” Brown came up with the show three years ago when she realized there’s no queer equivalent to NPR’s “Up First” or the NY Times’ “The Headlines.”
Though Brown serves as creator, the podcast will be hosted by Nay Bever, “Our Flag Means Death” star Vico Ortiz and Bex-Taylor Klaus. Bever and Brown will produce the podcast alongside editor and theme song-composer Lauren Klein, with research by Hannah Nobrega and illustrations by Jax Ko. All members of the “Today in Gay” production team identify as members of the queer community.
“Today in Gay” is fully-funded by Brown, who says everyone will be paid the same — from host to graphic designer, everyone working on the podcast will make $50/hr. The show will launch everywhere on Jan.

Taika Waititi really seems to be on a streak of losing shows and films. The filmmaker adapted the acclaimed Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits as a show for Apple TV+ but the series was canceled after its very first season. The adventure comedy series featured Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Charlyne Yi, and Waititi himself.
The series was co-created with Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris. While the show achieved critical acclaim, it did not seem to get the required viewership for a historic fiction sci-fi adventure series as big as that and hence was reportedly canceled. However, interest still remains within a small circle of fans.

Huzzah! Ghosts has officially cast comedian Nat Faxon, known for his roles in Loot and Our Flag Means Death, as Alexander Hamilton. While it's not known at this time which episode will feature Faxon's Hamilton, he's slated to appear as a guest star in early 2025. In the series, Hamilton was "Isaac's rival in life and obsession in death." Isaac's (potentially one-sided) beef with his fellow founding father stretches back to the show's second episode, in which Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) learns that they made a hit musical about Hamilton, while he's remembered almost exclusively for dying of dysentery.

Taika Waititi’s recent TV series Time Bandits was a critical darling, boasting an impressive 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, despite the positive reception, the show met an untimely cancellation after just one season, way before the characters were given the chance to grow and before Waititi’s signature storytelling could fully be realized.
A reimagining of the beloved 1981 movie of the same name by Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits follows 11-year-old Kevin who, through a series of misadventures, finds himself following a group of time-traveling bandits across various historical periods. Waititi’s vision captures the whimsical spirit of the original but puts a modern twist to the narrative. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director shed light on the reason behind the series’ abrupt cancellation, highlighting the challenges of maintaining a high-budget production in an increasingly competitive and volatile industry.
“This is a show that lasted one glorious season.

Taika Waititi addresses why his TV series Time Bandits, a reimagining of the cult classic 1981 movie, was canceled after one season on Apple TV+ despite generally favorable reviews. The series followed the adventures of 11-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tuck), a young history buff who joins a group of bumbling, time-traveling bandits led by Penelope (Lisa Kudrow). Featuring Waititi as the Supreme Being alongside long-time collaborator Jemaine Clement as Pure Evil, the show aimed to adapt the original Time Bandits movie’s surreal storytelling for modern audiences with Waititi's iconic quirks.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi explained the reasons behind the show’s untimely cancelation despite earning a respectable 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the New Zealand filmmaker, the decision came down to production costs, as the series was deemed too expensive to continue regardless of its critical success. Reflecting on his short-lived experience with the fantasy TV show,...

Netflix’s fifth and final original Christmas movie for 2024 is now streaming, and this one is animated. But you’re still going to recognize a whole lot of the cast.
Written and directed by Richard Curtis, who brought fans “Love, Actually,” the film centers on a group of people in a small town in the UK, getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Like “Love, Actually,” the story is told via vignettes, jumping around between different groups and pairings.
And as you meet those groups and pairings, you’re definitely going to recognize some of those voices. Here’s who we have.
Netflix/Getty Images Santa (Brian Cox)
The big man himself is voiced by Brian Cox, who you likely know from his time on “Succession,” or films including “X2: X-Men United,” “Troy,” “Red,” “Zodiac” and “Trick ‘r Treat,” among many others.
Netflix/Getty Images Lighthouse Bill (Bill Nighy)
Bill uses his lighthouse to help both Santa,...

As another year comes to an end, we start to look back at the TV shows we said goodbye to. Some cancellations hurt way more than others!
For this list, we’re looking at cancellations only, rather than shows that were given a final season order. It’s important to distinguish between the two. While being final seasoned hurts, cancellations tend to hurt more because the shows end on major cliffhangers with no resolutions.
All of these shows are either streaming originals or they can be watched on a streaming platform—and likely aren’t leaving those platforms any time soon. I still always recommend getting the DVDs or buying the digital copies of your favorite shows if you can, though, because you never know what the streaming platforms will do—yes, Max, we’re still looking at you!
Here are the six cancellations from 2024 that we’re still extremely salty about.

The official synopsis for Doctor Who's 2024 seasonal special has been unveiled, revealing its full cast while teasing the return of an old foe. Picking up after the events of Doctor Who season 14, the episode will see the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) drawn to a hotel that offers a selection of rooms from across human history. With Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday reconnecting with her family, Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan will take on the role of new one-time companion Joy.

As Joy checks into a seemingly ordinary hotel, she is drawn into an adventure with the Fifteenth Doctor across Earth throughout its history, though there is far more in store for the two of them.

What We Do in the Shadows was a strong project but didn’t quite break into the mainstream. However, with Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi skyrocketed to fame, quickly becoming one of the most popular and in-demand directors in Hollywood—a meteoric rise that was hard to ignore.
Since then, though, his career has faced a downturn. Thor: Love and Thunder was met with disappointment, while Next Goal Wins was enjoyable but not groundbreaking. Though Our Flag Means Death found success, Waititi’s star power isn’t where it once was.
As a result, three of his major projects—a live-action adaptation of the anime classic Akira, his take on the Star Wars franchise, and a Flash Gordon remake—have all been placed on hold and appear to be stuck in developmental limbo. Recently, the director himself spoke out about the future of these projects.
All three of these projects were incredibly ambitious.

What We Do in the Shadows was a solid but not a mainstream hit. On the other hand, with Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi reached stardom in a quick fashion, and he was suddenly one of the most popular and sought-after directors in the world, which was an incredible rise in popularity for him.
But, since then, his career has been on a downward spiral. Thor: Love and Thunder was a failure, while Next Goal Wins proved to be a fun film, but not much more. Our Flag Means Death was a solid success, but Waititi is nowhere near his former fame.
In light of that, the future of three of his major projects – a live-action adaptation of the anime classic Akira, a new take on the Star Wars franchise, and the Flash Gordon remake – have all been put on hold and are currently in developmental hell, we’d say.

Taika Waititi sheds light on the future of his career, and where his Star Wars, Akira, and Flash Gordon projects sit within his plans. The director is known for his work on movies such as What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Jojo Rabbit, which strike a careful balance between hilarity and darker, more emotionally complex topics. Waititi is also known for how he impacted the Thor sub-series in the MCU with 2017's Thor: Ragnarok and 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder.
While promoting his latest project, Interior Chinatown (for which he directed an episode and produced), Waititi was asked by The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast about what project will take priority next. While the director has been signed on to develop a Flash Gordon reboot, a live-action adaptation of Akira, and an original Star Wars movie, Waititi jokingly responded by questioning whether each production is dead...
