The historic Jim Henson Company lot, which started life as Charlie Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, has found a new buyer: John Mayer.
Yes, the singer-songwriter behind “Daughters” and “Waiting on the World to Change” has partnered with filmmaker McG to purchase the sprawling lot, located in the heart of Hollywood at 1416 N. La Brea Ave. The contract is in final negotiations as of Monday night, TheWrap has learned.
Mayer recorded his excellent 2021 album “Sob Rock” at Henson Recording Studios, part of the same lot, and filmed a performance video for “Last Train Home” (from the “Sob Rock”) album there.
Watch that recording below:
McG is best known for directing the “Charlie’s Angels” movies starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, along with “Terminator Salvation,” “We Are Marshall” and this year’s Netflix YA epic, “Uglies.”
Earlier this year, TheWrap exclusively reported that the lot was up for sale.

Movies and TV shows regularly come and go from streaming services; we all know this, but the trend has taken a disturbing turn in the past year, with content being pulled, sometimes permanently, just to save a few bucks. I know, it’s just business, but for the hundreds of creatives who have had their hard-work yanked from existence, it hurts. Disney+ has taken things to a new level as they have pulled Crater from the service, a movie which was released on May 12th… less than two months ago.
There’s no official word on why Crater was removed from Disney+, but The Independent believes that it’s “an attempt to cut costs relating to licencing deals.” The decision has sparked an outcry on social media, with some wondering why they’re paying for the service that can’t even keep their own content.

Following the cancellations of ABC’s “Alaska Daily” and “The Company You Keep” in May, both series are being pulled off Hulu as part of Disney’s ongoing review and removal of content in an effort to cut costs.
The shows, which were initially set to remain on the streamer until September, will now be removed next month. However, they will still be available through iTunes and Amazon.
Other impacted shows include the Rashida Jones comedy “Angie Tribeca,” NBC’s “Blindspot,” Samantha Bee and Jason Jones’ “The Detour” and TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which will be removed on July 1.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

After Disney unceremoniously removed dozens of titles from Disney+ and Hulu at the end of May, the company on Friday recorded via an SEC filing a “$1.5 billion impairment charge in its fiscal third quarter financial statements to adjust the carrying value of these content assets to fair value.”
And that might not be the end of it – according to the same filing the company could incur charges up to $400 million “related to produced content.”
To explain: On May 26, Disney removed dozens of titles from direct-to-consumer streaming platforms Disney+ (including movies like “Stargirl” and “Wolfgang” and original series like “Willow” and “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”) and Hulu. It was a baffling move given how closely connected many of the series and movies were to already-established Disney IP, making them an odd fit to shop to other streamers or linear platforms. Actor Kristen Schaal recently responded to the imminent removal of The Mysterious Benedict Society from the Disney+ streaming service, asking fans for tips on how to save it for personal viewing.
On social media, Schaal wrote, "[The Mysterious Benedict Society is] getting pulled tomorrow. Anyone know how to burn a dvd off a streamer so I can show my daughter this show someday?" While some fans responded to the actor with tips on how to copy a video from a streaming service and burn it on a disc, others expressed shock that the show's own actors were unable to get a legitimate copy of the show themselves, meaning they will no longer be unable to view it either after it is removed from Disney+.

Disney+ is planning a purge of many movie and TV series titles from its streaming service in the near future, this as part of the company's continued efforts to cut costs. Shows like The Mysterious Benedict Society and Willow are getting pulled, and that has gotten a lot of fans perturbed, though they'll be joined by a variety of movies and documentaries. Among them is the movie The One and Only Ivan, a family film directed by Thea Sharrock that was written by Mike White. Bryan Cranston starred in one of the lead roles with the film also featuring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, and Helen Mirren. Inspired by a true story, The One and Only Ivan is about a gorilla in captivity who devises a plan to escape with his new elephant pal.

Disney is going there, you guys.
As previously teased during the company's quarter one earnings call, the company is purging several titles from its streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu.
The practice has become common in recent months, with HBO Max leading the charge, wiping several projects from existence.
Undoubtedly, fans and creatives are struggling with the concept, but maybe some of the affected shows could show up elsewhere.
"We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion," Disney's chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, said during the earnings call.
Westworld, The Nevers, and other HBO fare popped back up on Fast services shortly after the controversial decision.
But for some shows, this could be the death knell that could be the difference whether new fans find them down the line.

Disney did a little (late) spring cleaning of its streaming services this week, removing several properties from Disney+ and Hulu. Among those that will go on May 26 include some high profile recent shows like “Willow,” “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface,” and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” What makes this troubling for many home viewers who may have been fans (or even stans!) of the affected programs is that, in most cases, there are no Blu-ray/DVD options. In the old days you could always hit record on your Vcr to build a personal library, but it’s not so easy to capture material from streaming—and the whole point of streaming is not needing to do that, right?
As per The Verge, Disney’s cost-cutting is due to a reduction in Disney+ subscribers, to the tune of 4 million in 2023. While the company will have to pay a “content impairment charge” of over $1.5 billion,...

For Halloween 2021, Disney+ entered the world of R.L. Stine with “Just Beyond,” an 8-episode anthology series based on Stine’s line of comic books. The series never got a second season, with Disney+ leaving its fate hanging in the balance these past two years.
Unfortunately, we’ve learned this week that Stine’s “Just Beyond” will be one of many Disney+ original projects that are soon being deleted from the streaming service entirely.
As The Hollywood Reporter explains, “Disney is following Warner Bros. Discovery and removing under-performing titles from its streaming services in a bid to write off nearly $2 billion from its bottom line. In all, there are more than 30 shows that will be removed starting next week from the platforms in this first round of reductions. The titles will vanish starting May 26.”

Willow writer John Bickerstaff just blasted Disney for delisting the show from Disney+, branding the move "absolutely cruel."
Bickerstaff took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with Disney, noting that Willow was being removed from Disney+ less than six months after its final episode aired. The scribe's tweet also suggested that Willow's treatment was representative of the increasingly harsh climate of the wider film and TV industry. Bickerstaff was one of several writers who contributed to Willow and is credited with co-writing the revival series' third episode, "The Battle of the Slaughtered Lamb," with Wendy Mericle.

Willow and Y: The Last Man are among the titles that Disney will be removing from Disney+ and Hulu. As the streaming industry continues to adapt, certain services have begun to pull content off their platforms, including their own original programming, as a way to cut costs. HBO Max used this strategy with the removal of Westworld, The Nevers, and a number of other popular series. It was recently confirmed that Disney would be taking the same approach with Disney+ and Hulu.

Add Disney+ and Hulu to the list of streamers whose complete slate of original shows and films is no longer guaranteed to be there the next time you go looking for it. This is the third time in five years that there have been 20 Best Variety Talk Series entries on the nominations ballot, after 2017 and 2019. There were 24 last year, 21 in 2018, and 17 in 2016. Five of the series listed below will reap bids this year, making the odds for each entry pretty good.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their ballots for their favorite variety talk shows. In the past, voters were limited in the number of such shows that they could put forth; in 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. Unlike at the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Although Disney Plus was initially dismissed by many as merely a digital alternative to owning home releases of the animated classics, its swiftly growing library of content has allowed it to become one of the premiere streaming services currently available. Now, a trailer has arrived to preview the highlights of the new movies and TV shows to be added throughout January, and you can check it out up above.
Films newly available this month include Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the beloved ‘60s classic that sees the magical super nanny reappear to the Banks children as adults when she’s most needed, to save them from the spiral of hopelessness and despair into which they’ve fallen.

While it’s just over a year or so old, Disney Plus has picked up a significant number of subscribers as it heads into 2021. Although the big release this month will be WandaVision, the Mouse House are continuing to flesh out the library of content and added eight new movies and television shows on January 1st.
After being removed from Disney+ only a few months ago, The Wolverine is back, presumably as the result of a new licensing deal being agreed upon. The James Mangold-directed picture is one of the stronger entries in the Fox X-Men franchise, and sees Hugh Jackman’s character travel to Japan in an adaptation of a popular 1980s comic story. Although it’ll still be some time before we can watch Logan and company all in one place, we’d expect more Marvel-related films to start appearing on the service in the first half of the year.

Another year, and another daunting challenge to keep up with the number of streaming options available from the big online players. And to mark January 1st, there’s some new content to enjoy on the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus and HBO Max, among others, as well as several notable changes in licensing agreements that may affect how you can watch your favorite shows.
On Netflix, the biggest fresh release is the third season of Cobra Kai, which has been a hit for the service since making the move from YouTube. Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. Other highlights, meanwhile, include Netflix documentary The Minimalists: Less Is Now, and a lot of licensed movies ranging from Bonnie and Clyde to Goodfellas.

2020, cursed year that it was, represented the first turn of the calendar since 2009 that did not feature an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its list of new releases for January 2021, Disney+ is set to immediately rectify that. Not only is WandaVision the first new McU installment since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, it’s the first ever Marvel television show from Marvel Studios’ reordering under content czar Kevin Feige.
WandaVision is set to premiere on Jan. 15 and will feature two beloved McU characters Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany). As the trailers reveal, this series will find Wanda and Vis living in domestic bliss in before discovering all is not what it seems. The series will pay homage to classic TV sitcoms and premiere new episodes each Friday.

Although 2020 is about to be behind us, not everything is changing. Disney Plus is still churning out solid content each week to keep our eyes and ears busy. And this coming week is no different, as the service is adding a selection of fresh movies and shows, and a few of them are hot titles that you’re not going to want to miss.

Exclusive: Hägar the Horrible is set to make a raid on the small screen with an animated family sitcom series in development.
Fresh Off the Boat writer and producer Eric Ziobrowski is writing the adaptation, which comes from King Features, the Hearst-owned division behind the comic strip and The Jim Henson Company.
The series will follow the hardworking Viking family led by a larger than life hero, Hägar, who can’t quite understand how the society he once understood is changing around him.
Hägar, who was created by Dik Browne, has been running in newspapers since 1973 and found himself at the center of U.S. politics earlier this year after a framed Hägar strip was seen on President Elect Joe Biden’s desk in the video call where he choose Kamala Harris to be his Vice President.

Brian Henson has been head of the Jim Henson Company for nearly 30 years now, following in his father Jim Henson’s footsteps. His latest project, “Earth To Ned” (streaming on Disney Plus) features new puppet creatures, such as the titular alien commander Ned (Paul Rugg) and his sidekick Cornelius (Michael Oosterom), who host a late-night talk show.
Ned is sent to destroy Earth, but instead, he falls in love with mankind, beaming human celebrity guests, such as RuPaul and Rachel Bloom, to his spaceship. The idea to play with a combination of late-night TV, improve and science fiction had been brewing in Henson’s mind for more than six years before becoming a reality.
Here, Henson talks with Variety about the craft of puppetry and creature effects, and how materials have changed in the crafts work.

The latest creative venture from The Jim Henson Company, Earth to Ned, is far and away one of the company's most unique and different works to date. It also happens to be one of the most special things on all of Disney+ so far. This extraterrestrial talk show has it all: Muppets-like puppets, aliens, celebrity guests, and bizarre pop culture fixations.

With ten episodes released so far, and more episodes already produced, Earth to Ned has gotten off to a great start, quickly finding its tone and setting itself apart from all other competitors - in the sci-fi, puppet, and talk show genres. Though there were a few bumps in the ride along the way in season one, there's no denying the fact that Earth to Ned has done more things well than most freshman series can claim.

Disney+ UK has unveiled its September content schedule, and the big centrepiece – as you may have guessed – is the premiere of Mulan, which will skip its UK cinema release after a controversial decision by Disney bosses, who previously hadn’t been very keen to put their upcoming big budget projects on the streaming service during 2020’s ongoing madness.
The unveiling of the highly anticipated live-action Mulan movie on Disney+ seems to be a first step towards bypassing cinemas for the foreseeable future, and it will be interesting to see how successful the gambit is with a price tag of £19.99 attached to the experience. The film certainly has a strong cast, with Liu Yifei as Mulan, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in a supporting role.

With Hollywood production sideswiped by the coronavirus pandemic for five months, TV networks and streamers’ pipeline is starting to dry up. There are promising signs, with a handful of series already back in production and a couple of dozen more on track to start filming in the next couple of weeks.
While the situation remains fluid as we swing into the fall season, here are the fall premiere dates for new series and new seasons of returning shows that have been set so far. The list includes two series whose production was impacted by Covid-19 and have just resumed filming, the CW’s Supernatural and FX’s Fargo. We will continue to update the roster as more new and returning fall series begin filming and set premiere dates.

After successfully bringing movie theater fare like Artemis Fowl and Hamilton to the smaller screen, Disney+ is going to attempt its most ambitious movie streaming experiment yet in September.
Disney+’s list of new releases for September 2020 is highlighted by the inclusion of Mulan. Originally scheduled to premiere in March, the live-action adaptation of the classic Disney animated movie was one of the first coronavirus scheduling casualties. The full line-up of everything that’s coming to Disney Plus next month has been revealed. September will prove to be a hugely important one for the streaming service, too, thanks to the release of Mulan. Dropping on the first Friday of the month, the live-action remake of the classic animated movie is breaking the mold by going up on D+ alongside a limited theatrical release. As you probably know, though, you’ll have to fork out an additional $30 to watch it, as part of a new Premier Access level to the site.
Mulan is the most headline-grabbing addition to the service next month, then, but there’s plenty more besides that coming to D+ in September. Including a few classic Disney movies, a bunch of others inherited from Fox, various National Geographic documentaries and much more.
