So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.
Black stars alongside Paul Rudd (Death of a Unicorn) in Anaconda, arriving in theaters December 25, 2025.
“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”
While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.

A mysterious outbreak at an international airport marks the explosive beginning of Silent Zone, a post-apocalyptic action-horror film that throws viewers headfirst into a world spiralling toward collapse. Containment efforts fail almost immediately, and within days, the streets are overrun with the infected—aggressive, ravenous, and disturbingly relentless. Civilization falls swiftly, and survival becomes the only priority.
In the heart of this chaos is five-year-old Abigail (Katalin Krenn), who watches in horror as her mother and younger brother Lucas are brutally attacked. Abigail’s fate seems sealed until she’s rescued by Cassius, a battle-worn former soldier. In a grim twist, he is forced to shoot Abigail’s reanimated mother in front of her – an early signal that Silent Zone isn’t pulling any emotional punches.

While plot details remain under wraps for it, Paul Rudd has shared some insight into how the new Anacondafits into the franchise. Originally kicking off with the Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez-led film of the same name, the horror movie series has since comprised of a standalone sequel, two back-to-back sequels, a Lake Placid crossover and Chinese reimagining. Development on the Anaconda reboot was revealed in early 2020, with Rudd and Jack Black joining to lead the movie's ensemble cast in mid 2024 and filming beginning in January 2025.
During a recent interview with Collider for his upcoming A24 horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn, Rudd was asked about what audiences could expect from his Anaconda reboot. In looking specifically at how the movie connects to the wider franchise, Rudd confirmed it won't be a direct remake of the cult classic original horror title, instead following a group of characters who are "certainly inspired" by the original.

Nicolas Cage is continuing to expand his wild filmography by dipping his toes into the western genre. But, it wouldn't be a Nic Cage movie without the actor either delivering one of the most groundbreaking, emotional performances of his life, or one of the most bonkers caricatures you've ever seen. For his new, wild western, Gunslingers, Cage has characteristically chosen the latter.
The first trailer for Gunslingers has now been unleashed, and it's safe to say that Cage is a certified scene-stealer once again. The film is written and directed by Brian Skiba (Guns of Redemption) and is set to be released on April 11. Alongside Cage, Gunslingers also stars Heather Graham, Stephen Dorff, and Scarlet Rose Stallone. Cage plays mad genius Ben, who is guided to a town named Redemption to confront their violent histories. The official synopsis reads:

We probably don’t need to tell you that Nicolas Cage has led an eventful personal life over the years.
But the eccentric screen legend’s latest legal drama stems not from his actions, but rather from those of his troubled son Weston.
Back in April of 2024, Weston was arrested for assaulting his own mother, Christina Fulton. It was not his first arrest on domestic violence charges.
Now, Fulton has filed lawsuits against both Weston and Nic, claiming that the latter enables his son and brings out the 34-year-old’s worst tendencies.

After spending three weeks at No. 1 on Nielsen’s overall streaming viewership chart, Netflix’s Squid Game has relinquished its crown.
Netflix’s Jamie Foxx-Cameron Diaz thriller Back In Action landed the top spot this week with 1.5 billion minutes viewed, Nielsen said in its weekly update on Thursday. Squid Game fell to No. 4 on the overall streaming chart with 1.25 billion minutes viewed during the Jan. 13-Jan. 19 frame, the most recent week in the data firm’s tally.
Meanwhile, Billy Bob Thornton-starrer Landman kept up its run with 1.05 billion minutes of viewing and represents the only Paramount+ show outside of library title Dexter to chart in the top 5 for this week on either the TV or movies charts.
Speaking of Western-influenced shows, Peter Berg’s American Primeval, which was the top premiere on the streaming chart last week, rose to No. 2 on the overall chart with 1.41 billion minutes viewed.

Now December, and 2024, finished up with two such films, Mufasa: The Lion King which is a rare sequel/prequel in Disney’s series, and another adventure of the video game superstar, Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Like the latter, this new release is the third outing, and it also mixes a CGI-animated character in a live-action world. However, it also shares its origins with the current (for the last two weeks) box office champ Dog Man, which is based on a beloved series of children’s books. Now can the filmmakers score a rare “hat trick’ as the first sequel is so admired that it was ‘name-checked” at the end...

It’s only been 7 years since we last saw the undeniably lovable Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) in 2018’s Paddington 2, but the film has had a wild life since its initial release. For a film that only made about $40 million at the U.S. box office (and $227 million worldwide), this film's impact was immense. Paddington 2 has been called one of the greatest sequels ever made, it was the highest-ranked film on Rotten Tomatoes for years, and was integral in the Hugh Grant renaissance that we now find ourselves in. Paddington 2 has become so appreciated as a modern classic, its greatness was even the focus of one of the best scenes in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. 2015’s Paddington might’ve been good, but Paddington 2 is already considered a potential masterpiece.

Pedro Pascal, Hollywood’s current darling, has worked in seemingly everything from HBO’s Game of Thrones and The Last of Us to the Dceu’s Wonder Woman 1984, and Star Wars’ The Mandalorian. Now, he is ready to don the blue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s superhero flick The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, Pascal’s path to success wasn’t always this smooth, and his career began with its fair share of struggles.
At one point, he even had to rely on his childhood friend and fellow actor Sarah Paulson, who generously helped him financially and even offered him a place to stay when he couldn’t afford rent. But Pascal’s struggle wasn’t just financial — it was also about building credibility in an industry where he had yet to make a significant impact. And a surprising...

Jack Black is leaning on his musical chops in a new video with Paul Rudd to announce the cast of Anaconda, theupcoming riff reboot of the 1997 semi-flop starring Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube.
There's nothing sweeter than the sound of a cast list being sung by Jack Black with Selton Mello's acoustic guitar strumming and Paul Rudd playing bongos in the background. Renowned actor and one half of the hilariously rocking band Tenacious D, Black is back with another short tune for fans. The song, impressively improvised in the style of the actor's well-known musical rock group featuring Kyle Gass, details the cast of the upcoming reboot.

One of the oddest movie marketing campaigns of all time rolls on with another unconventional announcement from Sony’s upcoming Anaconda, a project that’s all around hard to get a clear handle on. Arriving in theaters December 25, 2025, the franchise reboot is clearly taking a more comedic approach to the material, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd starring.
This latest video features Jack Black performing a Tenacious D-style song to officially announce the main cast of Anaconda, which also includes Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”), Steve Zahn (“Silo,” Joy Ride), Brazilian actor Selton Mello, and Daniela Melchior.
Ione Skye, we recently learned, will also star in the new movie.
In Anaconda‘s big screen return, “a group of friends facing mid-life crises are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.

Over the weekend, Nicolas Cage won a Saturn Award for his work in A24’s “Dream Scenario,” a surrealist comedy that saw the performer playing a college professor whose dreams infect the masses. He used part of his acceptance speech to warn against the dangers of artificial intelligence.
“I say, protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions,” the actor warned.
After thanking his writer/director Kristoffer Borgli for dreaming up the imaginative world of “Dream Scenario,” he then turned his attention to the threat of AI.
“But there is another world that is also disturbing me. It’s happening right now around all of us: The new AI world. I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Did Nicolas Cage choose to pass on Marvel? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Yep, Nicholas Cage doesn’t require some superhero mashup cooked up in a comic fan’s fever dream. Why? Simple. “I don’t need to be in the MCU. I’m Nic Cage.”
Mic drop. Curtain close. End of story.
But really, does Hollywood’s quirkiest chameleon need a Marvel gig? This is the man who’s been a treasure-hunting history buff (National Treasure), a flame-headed demon biker (Ghost Rider), and a self-aware version of himself (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent). He’s danced across genres like it’s a karaoke playlist, and somehow, it always works.
Still, Cage isn’t giving Marvel the cold shoulder. In fact, his bond with the superhero universe is deeper than you think. “I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage,” he revealed. “Stan Lee is my surrealistic father.

2024 was, all told, a mixed year at the box office. Things started out on a dreadful note as the first half of the year was filled with flops, disappointments, and movies that simply couldn't carry the load after 2023's SAG and WGA strikes completely upended the release calendar. Fortunately, things turned around in the second half of the year thanks to hit movies like "Wicked," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and "Inside Out 2" turning the tide. Despite all of that, the global box office finished well below that for 2023, slowing the industry's recovery in the aftermath of the 2020 lockdowns. At the same time, streaming's place as the future was more firmly cemented.
According to Gower Street Analytics (via Deadline), the global box office total for 2024 was $30 billion, compared to $33.9 billion in 2023. That number includes $8.75 billion from domestic ticket sales, which was down from 2023 when that number topped $9 billion. In light of...

Pedro Pascal recently made headlines thanks to his performance in Gladiator 2, the period action epic from Ridley Scott that has grossed over $450 million at the worldwide box office. However, a few years ago, he teamed up with a major star for a comedy that flew under the radar upon release, but has recently found a home and streaming success on a new platform. Pascal features alongside Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the 2022 R-rated comedy/action thriller that recently began streaming on Netflix and has climbed to #4 on the streamer’s charts. The film earned equally strong scores of 87% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it only grossed $29 million at the box office against a $30 million budget.

Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in a darkly comic reimagining of 1997’s Anaconda.
The new, blacky comic and somewhat meta-sounding Anaconda reboot is currently filming in Queensland, Australia, and from the production comes a new bit of casting. Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Ione Skye and Selton Mello have all been added to the line-up, which is already headlined by Jack Black and Paul Rudd.
The new Anaconda is being directed by Tom Gormican, who previously made The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent – an action comedy that doubled as a knowing retrospective on its star Nicolas Cage and his acting career. Judging by the story details from the production so far, Gormican’s Anaconda (stop chortling at the back) has a similar post-modern edge.

“Kraven the Hunter” (Sony) flopped in theaters when it opened five weeks ago (not even $25 million grossed in the U.S./Canada), but the Marvel world-adjacent action film had enough interest to vie for top home VOD title last week. It placed first at Fandango (which calculates by revenue) and second currently at iTunes (ranking by transactions), although it was #1 at the latter its first three days in release.
“Wicked” (Universal) in its third week of home release remained #1 at iTunes, but dropped to second at Fandango. Both rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
At Netflix, “Back in Action” is the latest original movie to lead their top 10. The spy comedy, Jamie Foxx’s first TV movie since 2004, and Cameron Diaz’s first film of any kind in over a decade, is the kind of star-driven lightweight effort that used to populate theaters on a regular basis. Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is quickly climbing Netflix's charts following its premiere on the platform. Tom Gormican's 2022 action-comedy sees a fictionalized and down-on-his-luck Cage embark on a paid appearance at billionaire super-fan Javi Gutierrez's (Pascal) birthday party, only to find himself swept up in a CIA plot. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent also stars Sharon Horgan, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz, Neil Patrick Harris, and Paco León.
After netting a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes upon release, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent had an incredible debut among audiences upon its Netflix premiere. My Anaconda don't want none, unless you got... a good agent, hun. At least, that's the case for the newest additions to the upcoming Anaconda movie, the film with the biggest snake seen on cinema since Rosamund Pike decided she was sick of Ben Affleck in Gone Girl. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the meta reboot of the 1990s' schlock movie just got even more star-studded, as Silo standout Steve Zahn and acclaimed actor Thandiwe Newton have joined the film, currently shooting in Australia. Directed by Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), the movie is putting a very different spin on the Jennifer Lopez and Jon Voight-starrer from the 90s.

Thandiwe Newton, who starred in HBO’s acclaimed Westworld, and Silo actor Steve Zahn have been swallowed up by Anaconda, Columbia’s comedic reimagining of the 1997 horror movie that launched a mini-franchise.
Selton Mello, who appears in Brazilian awards season hopeful I’m Still Here, and Ione Sky have also joined the feature that stars by Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Mello will be making his English-language debut with the action comedy.
Tom Gormican, who directed the Nicolas Cage meta movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is co-writing with collaborator Kevin Etten and will direct the feature.
The original movie starred Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube and Jon Voight, and followed a National Geographic film crew hunting for the world’s largest and deadliest snake, only to find the tables turned.

In 2022, Nicolas Cage played Nicolas Cage in "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," a delightful comedy outing that saw the veteran star come across as what /Film's Jacob Hall described as "often nuanced, generally restrained, and painfully, awkwardly human." That's quite an accomplishment for Cage, who has been known for anything but his restraint in the last couple of decades. Even when he starred in the most terrifying horror movie of 2024, "Longlegs," he played the mysterious and creepy serial killer with an over-the-top relish. I went into that theater wondering if we'd see some kind of uncharacteristic restraint on Cage's behalf, but after he started scream-singing five minutes into the movie I thought, "Nope!" Not to say his performance was bad, but if you saw him in David Gordon Green's 2013 effort "Joe," you might too be hoping for more of the quietly brooding older Nic Cage and less of...

Released in 2022, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of the riskier Hollywood projects to hit theaters after the pandemic wreaked havoc across the industry. The film featured Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in a story that parodied the real-life Face/Off actor and paid homage to his lengthy filmography while poking fun, too. Unfortunately, it proved to be a box office flop, barely making back most of its $30 million budget with a $29 million worldwide box office gross. However, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent turned out to be a great comedy with more than enough to warrant a viewing, and it's making big waves on streaming this year.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is one of the most hilarious and unhinged Nicolas Cage movies in recent memory. Released in 2022, this bizarre blockbuster premiered with an impressive 87% rating from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has established itself as a must-see action-packed comedy film.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is an action comedy that takes breaking the fourth wall to a new level. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage, a fictional version of the actor, who finds himself in a dire situation he never expected while on a trip. Several actors have played themselves in films over the years, but The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent takes the concept in an entirely new direction. The film capitalizes on the charms and career of its star while setting up a central friendship that will likely have audiences talking for a while.
The premise itself sounds wild and ridiculous — Nick Cage is paid $1 million to appear at a billionaire’s birthday party before being roped into working alongside the CIA. The film’s twists, turns, and ending confirm that if anyone was up to the task of playing himself, it’s Nicolas Cage.

As the actor's resurgence continues, a recent Nicolas Cage hit is finding a new streaming home. Even before landing his Oscar win for Leaving Las Vegas, the actor had made a name for himself in the '80s with leading roles in everything from the teen romantic comedy Valley Girl to the Coen brothers' Raising Arizona. He would solidify himself as a household name with his work in the action genre throughout the '90s and 2000s, including Michael Bay's The Rock, John Woo's Face/Off and the National Treasure franchise.
For the majority of the 2010s, Cage infamously became better known for his work in critically panned direct-to-video movies, which he has since explained stemmed from encountering financial problems and taking on as many projects as possible to make up for it. A sequel to Nicolas Cage’s arms-trafficking drama Lord of War is about to start shooting, but there are plenty of other Cage sequels I’d rather see first. Cage has been on a roll lately; he’s been taking on interesting roles in interesting movies and showing off his range. He gave an unforgettably sinister turn as a sadistic, Satanic serial killer in Longlegs, but he also gave a hilariously self-deprecating performance as a skewed, fictionalized version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
There are a lot of Nicolas Cage movies that deserve a sequel. It would be great to see him revisit some of his funniest comedic roles, and there are a few of his classic action movies from the ‘90s that are due for a legacy sequel. The sequel to Lord of War certainly sounds intriguing, but is it really the best sequel for Cage to make right now?...

Everyone's a critic, art's subjective, and everyone has their own personal favorites, so saying "the best of all time" is relative at best or even pointless. When Rotten Tomatoes applies that label to a film, though, it has a bit more weight, considering it's an aggregate site that usually represents a wide range of critics' opinions. The classic 1990s monster movie Anaconda is returning with a new remake, but this time it is envisioned as a meta comedy. The 1997 original starred Jennifer Lopez as a documentary filmmaker who travels deep into the jungles of South America in search of a lost tribe of indigenous people who live there. Unfortunately, the crew gets more than they bargained for when they encounter a dangerous criminal (played by Jon Voight) and a massive man-eating snake. Though cheesy and critically panned, Anaconda certainly has its place in the poorly-defined horror landscape of the 1990s.
Now, after a ton of sequels to Anaconda, the Jennifer Lopez vehicle is set to be remade by Hollywood but in a way that is totally unexpected. The project was first announced by Columbia Pictures exactly four years earlier, in January 2020. However, it wasn’t until August 2024 that the McU's Rudd and The Super Mario Bros. Movie's Jack Black were first reported to be in talks to star in the reboot. Following the report, Sony Pictures officially announced that the film was happening with a sneak peek video of Rudd and Black on the set. A release date has also been set for Christmas 2025, as the actors announced in the video (while using some colorful language).

Something other than Santa Claus is coming to town next holiday as Sony plans to release its reimagined Anaconda movie in the Christmas 2025 window. With plans to take a comedic approach to the original 1997 creature feature, The Anaconda stars Jack Black, Paul Rudd, and Daniela Melchoir with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican at the helm. The Anaconda slithers alongside other Christmas Day releases, including Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, and A24’s ping-pong biopic Marty Supreme, starring Timothee Chalamet.
In addition to getting behind the camera, Tom Gormican wrote Sony’s The Anaconda with Kevin Etten.

The Anaconda franchise is slithering its way back to theaters with a brand new reboot movie from Sony, and the studio has officially given the project a 2025 release date this week.
Sony’s Anaconda will be unleashed on December 25, 2025.
Daniela Melchior (James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Road House) will also star in the creature feature Christmas present next year, which looks to bring a meta twist to the franchise.
“According to sources,” The Hollywood Reporter details, “the new story involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth.
“They head to the rainforest only to find themselves into a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.”
Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) is scripting and directing.
