So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.

“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”

While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.

While plot details remain under wraps for it, Paul Rudd has shared some insight into how the new Anacondafits into the franchise. Originally kicking off with the Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez-led film of the same name, the horror movie series has since comprised of a standalone sequel, two back-to-back sequels, a Lake Placid crossover and Chinese reimagining. Development on the Anaconda reboot was revealed in early 2020, with Rudd and Jack Black joining to lead the movie's ensemble cast in mid 2024 and filming beginning in January 2025.

During a recent interview with Collider for his upcoming A24 horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn, Rudd was asked about what audiences could expect from his Anaconda reboot. In looking specifically at how the movie connects to the wider franchise, Rudd confirmed it won't be a direct remake of the cult classic original horror title, instead following a group of characters who are "certainly inspired" by the original.

Showtime has announced that Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris (Uncoupled) will join the cast of the Showtime original series Dexter: Resurrection. Ritter will guest star in the role of “Mia” and Harris in the role of “Lowell.”

Production for Dexter: Resurrection kicked off in January 2025 in New York and the series is set to launch in summer of 2025 on Paramount+ with Showtime. The new original drama series stars SAG and Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall in the titular role of Dexter Morgan.

After spending three weeks at No. 1 on Nielsen’s overall streaming viewership chart, Netflix’s Squid Game has relinquished its crown.

Netflix’s Jamie Foxx-Cameron Diaz thriller Back In Action landed the top spot this week with 1.5 billion minutes viewed, Nielsen said in its weekly update on Thursday. Squid Game fell to No. 4 on the overall streaming chart with 1.25 billion minutes viewed during the Jan. 13-Jan. 19 frame, the most recent week in the data firm’s tally.

Meanwhile, Billy Bob Thornton-starrer Landman kept up its run with 1.05 billion minutes of viewing and represents the only Paramount+ show outside of library title Dexter to chart in the top 5 for this week on either the TV or movies charts.

Speaking of Western-influenced shows, Peter Berg’s American Primeval, which was the top premiere on the streaming chart last week, rose to No. 2 on the overall chart with 1.41 billion minutes viewed.

It’s only been 7 years since we last saw the undeniably lovable Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) in 2018’s Paddington 2, but the film has had a wild life since its initial release. For a film that only made about $40 million at the U.S. box office (and $227 million worldwide), this film's impact was immense. The Anaconda franchise is snaking its way back to theaters this holiday season, and the cast continues to grow. THR reports today that Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”) and Steve Zahn have joined the comedic reimagining of the 1997 action horror movie.

Sony’s Anaconda is set to release in theaters on December 25, 2025.

Selton Mello, making his English-language debut, and Ione Skye (Zodiac) have also joined the cast that includes Jack Black, Paul Rudd (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), and Daniela Melchior.

The plot is said to follow “a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.”

Directed by Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), the movie is putting a very different spin on the Jennifer Lopez and Jon Voight-starrer from the 90s.

Thandiwe Newton, who starred in HBO’s acclaimed Westworld, and Silo actor Steve Zahn have been swallowed up by Anaconda, Columbia’s comedic reimagining of the 1997 horror movie that launched a mini-franchise.

Selton Mello, who appears in Brazilian awards season hopeful I’m Still Here, and Ione Sky have also joined the feature that stars by Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Mello will be making his English-language debut with the action comedy.

According to a new report from Production Bulletin, the Anaconda reboot is scheduled to begin filming in January 2025. The project was first announced by Columbia Pictures exactly four years earlier, in January 2020. However, it wasn’t until August 2024 that the McU's Rudd and The Super Mario Bros. Movie's Jack Black were first reported to be in talks to star in the reboot. Following the report, Sony Pictures officially announced that the film was happening with a sneak peek video of Rudd and Black on the set. The Anaconda franchise is slithering its way back to theaters with a brand new reboot movie from Sony, and the studio has officially given the project a 2025 release date this week.
