Jason Statham is a man who knows how to please a crowd, and even if his movies are hammered into the ground by critics, he can manage to blast his way to a spectacular victory every time. While he found huge critical and commercial success with 2024’s collaboration with director David Ayer on The Beekeeper, back in 2016, Mechanic: Resurrection was buried under the weight of a 31% Tomatometer score, but now the film just refuses to lay down and die on the free streaming platform, Tubi.
Following up his 2011 hit, The Mechanic, it was a no-brainer for Statham to reprise his role as Arthur Bishop, a master assassin coerced out of retirement to carry out more increasingly impossible hits. The movie has plenty of the usual intense and over-the-top action sequences, accompanied by a simple plot, and plenty of the usual Statham swagger to boot. Along for the ride in the sequel is Jessica Alba,...

Jason Statham and David Ayer made a winning team last year with the release of The Beekeeper. Featuring the usual mix of brutal action sequences, over-the-top set-pieces, and a story that asks for a little suspension of disbelief, fans have been hoping for news of a sequel but have been left hanging for a year now. However, a new comment from Ayer in response to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, noting how much he loves working with the British star, has sparked hope that news of The Beekeeper 2 may not be too far away.
Statham has been the king of streaming recently. From old Guy Ritchie movies to his Expendables and Fast & Furious movies, there is barely a week goes by without a different movie appearing near the top of a streamer’s chart of most watched movies. While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.
Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. With the film recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, it's time to hook up the jumper cables and bring Crank 2: High Voltage back to life.

How insane can a need for adrenaline get? There are probably no limits to this answer, but there's at least one franchise in cinema that was willing to go as far as possible in order to find out and entertain its audience. Crank: High Voltage premiered in 2009 with a pretty different concept, which we'll get to in a bit. Now, sixteen years later, the movie is climbing the Max charts and once again entertaining audiences. The title is currently at #9 among the most-watched movies on the platform.

Quick Links Jason Statham Had Six Consecutive Flops Before The Expendables 2 How The Expendables 2 Restored His Winning Streak
When it comes to action films, stars like Keanu Reeves or Tom Cruise may come to mind first, but Jason Statham is arguably as well-known in the genre. Beginning with the Transporter trilogy, the actor has been renowned for his effortlessly cool-looking martial arts and has been in numerous other successful action franchises, including The Expendables, Crank, Fast & Furious, and The Mechanic.
Having said that, most people are unaware that, despite his unrivaled success in the Transporter films, Statham experienced a long, exhausting descent in his career during the early 2010s, when six of his movies flopped in succession. Nonetheless, he rose from the ashes to reestablish himself as the action king, eventually appearing in some of the most entertaining films, including Spy, Fast & Furious, and The Beekeeper. It would be hard to name another actor working today who is as completely committed to the action genre as Jason Statham. While popular stars like Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington, and Tom Cruise still leave some time in between their action films to appear in more prestigious projects, Statham seems completely committed to making-mass market entertainment that aims to do nothing more than be entertaining. The gritty icon has starred in some of the most memorable action films in recent memory, but his best work tends to be in completely unhinged projects that defy any notion of logic. Although it had to work very hard to outdo its predecessor, Crank 2: High Voltage features an electrically charged fight scene that ranks as perhaps the absolute strangest moment in Stathams entire career.

As one of the best action stars on the block, Jason Statham has been entertaining us for the best part of the last 20 years. With his lean and rock-hard physique coupled with his gruff English accent, Statham epitomizes the hard man energy needed to survive on screen. Be it French goons, gigantic sharks, vampires from Mars, or Jet Li, Statham has taken everyone on. Given a license to create bad Photoshop images and discuss hypothetical film pitches that will never happen, here we suggest exactly who The Stath should beat the crap out of next.

Jason Statham's high-octane, adrenaline-filled thrill ride Crank: High Voltage has found a second life on Starz. Surprisingly, the movie is third in the streaming platform's most-watched movies, captivating viewers with its madcap premise and utterly relentless action. Crank: High Voltage is the sequel to Crank from 2006, which introduced Statham as Chev Chelios, a hitman who is poisoned with a lethal drug that will stop his heart if his adrenaline levels drop. Think of it like Speed, but with a heart instead of a bus. To stay alive, Chev runs around Los Angeles trying to keep his adrenaline pumping by driving fast, getting into fights, and even engaging in some public carnal activity, all while trying to find the antidote and exact revenge on those responsible for his impending death.

Jason Statham has cemented himself as everyones favorite modern day action star, but will we audiences ever see him return as one of his lesser-known characters: Chev Chelios. The lead of the Crank franchise, a third movie in the series has yet to materialize despite the popularity of The Stath, and director Brian Taylor did once reveal the f*cked up reason why this might be.
In an interview with The Movie Crypt podcast back in 2018, Crank and Crank High Voltage co-director Brian Taylor revealed what it would take for fellow director Mark Neveldine, Statham, and himself to return to complete the trilogy. And its no wonder the studio hasnt given the greenlight yet.
My feeling about Crank 3 is that Crank 3 should be as exponentially more f*cked up than Crank 2 as Crank 2 was to Crank 1. Obviously, theres been talk here and there, but Ive never really felt...

Warning: Major spoilers for Crank (2006) below!
Chev Chelios gets his revenge in Crank's finale by killing the people who injected him with the "Beijing Cocktail." Chev's death in Crank's ending was intended to be conclusive, but the fact his heart is beating left room for a sequel. Crank 2 sees Chev implanted with an artificial heart that he has to keep topped up with electricity.
Crank might end on a bittersweet note for Jason Statham's hitman Chev Chelios, but it still set up a sequel. This Jason Statham action movie opens with Chev waking in his apartment, and soon learning that his rival Ricky Verona (Jose Pablo Cantillo) has injected him with a slow-acting poison. This inhibits adrenaline and will eventually kill him, but Chev realizes if he keeps his flow of adrenaline pumping by performing outrageous acts, he'll extend his lifespan. He thus makes it...

Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World is what happens when you toss The Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, Happy!, and Crank into a blender. While that sounds rad, the slurry of upbeat action and nonsense plot tangles is much more baffling in execution. Mohr’s vision borrows heavily from button-mashy videogames and dystopian graphic novels, blending Cyberpunk futurism with real-world dictatorship commentaries. There’s a message about fascism and rebellion somewhere in Mohr’s madcap martial arts violence, but it’s lost under the piles of enemy corpses. Boy Kills World never knows the movie it wants to be past a killing spree, as the story makes one poor choice after the next, like a genre satire that becomes what it tries to parody.

If curating the Best Action Movies of All Time felt borderline impossible, then ranking just the top entries from this century is Mission Barely Manageable.
Most franchise IP blockbusters released to big box office hauls in recent years could qualify as “action movies” in one way or another. That’s particularly true when it comes to the omnipresent cultural phenomenon we call superhero films. It can be tempting to write off the entire action genre when all you see is the over-pixelated epics about super-somethings stopping intergalactic injustice that make up an increasingly large chunk of modern Hollywood. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget workaround. When done well, action movies can tell great character-driven stories through movement. Action — acted or animated — is simply drama made dynamic.
That principle is what separates so many of the movies on...

For a comic book movie franchise that has never reached the heights of most Marvel or DC films of the last two decades, "Hellboy" has remained shockingly resilient. To that end, Mike Mignola's beloved character is set for yet another big-screen reboot in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." This time around, the character will be headed back to the 1950s for a folk horror adventure based on one the most celebrated storylines from the comics.
This will be the character's first film since 2019's "Hellboy." Starring David Harbour, it proved to be a critical and commercial disaster. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is set to try to bring the character to life once again with a lower-budget take on the material. So, when will you be able to see the movie? Great movie sequels can flop at the box office, proving that commercial success doesn't always reflect a film's quality or impact. Negative reviews and long gaps between the original and sequel can result in a loss of interest and disappointment among audiences. Successful sequels strike a balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling, attracting both fans of the original and newcomers, but this doesn't guarantee commercial success.
Great movie sequels that bombed at the box office are proof that commercial failure isn't always an accurate indicator of a film's quality, and franchises like Indiana Jones and Terminator prove it. Successor films often face heightened expectations due to the popularity or sheer cultural impact of the original. Failure to meet these expectations can lead to severe disappointment among audiences - or films getting almost entirely forgotten through time.

Faith No More frontman Mike Patton lent a recognizably human quality to I Am Legend's Darkseekers with his unique growl, humanizing the monsters. The Darkseekers' portrayal hinted at their humanity, with their emotions easily understood through their angry, panicked, and upset expressions. Patton's performance injected personality into what could have been incomprehensible squawks and screams, making him the perfect choice for I Am Legend's misunderstood villains.
While I Am Legend’s villainous Darkseekers didn’t have much in the way of comprehensible dialogue, the monster movie’s villains were voiced by a surprisingly iconic musician. Released in 2007, I Am Legend is a post-apocalyptic action-thriller that follows Will Smith’s Dr. Robert Neville around the abandoned streets of New York City after a plague has wiped out much of humanity. Some humans who survived the plague became Darkseekers, vampiric monsters that dwelled in the dark and attacked at night.

Video Game movies have truly turned a corner over the last handful of years, but with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" currently in the midst of a record-breaking run in theaters, the tide has truly turned in a big, bad way. Fortunately for Sony Pictures, they've got a big video game movie (sort of) on the way this summer in the form of "Gran Turismo," which takes its name from the beloved eponymous racing game series. The story is based on real events, however, which makes it more than just a run-of-the-mill video game adaptation. And during Sony's presentation in Las Vegas at CinemaCon tonight, the studio showcased new footage from the film.
/Film's Ben Pearson is on the ground to take in what every major studio in Hollywood has to offer at the event. In the case of "Gran Turismo," we got a much better look at David Harbour...

When thinking about our list of the 50 Best Action Movies of the 21st century so far, it became clear that action movies have taken two paths in the past couple of decades. On the one hand, most of the franchise IP blockbusters — especially superhero films — released to massive box-office hauls could qualify as action movies in one way or another, even if they’re less kinetic than pixelated. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget work around. When done well, an action movie can tell great character-driven stories through movement: drama made dynamic.
And that’s what defines so many of the movies on IndieWire’s list: Some are self-consciously quirky character pieces, from Jason Statham needing to keep his heart rate up at adrenalized extremes in “Crank: High Voltage” to Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci having sex...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Speaking after her tragic death at the age of 33, President Franklin D. Roosevelt testified to the legacy of Carole Lombard. “She is and always will be a star,” he stated in 1942, “one that we shall never forget, nor cease to be grateful to.” Although the president’s words were at least in part influenced by Lombard’s recent patriotic zeal (she died in a plane crash after traveling to sell war bonds), his comments resonated throughout the country, especially Hollywood, where the actress’s impact had been progressively pronounced for years. Her films were like a breath of fresh air to Depression-era audiences, adding silver screen levity to individuals seeking a brief reprieve from day-to-day hardship. By contrast, Lombard’s cinematic sphere was often one of glamour, romance, and, above all,...

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to “Giving Voice,” a documentary about the August Wilson Monologue Competition that won the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“Giving Voice” is directed by James D. Stern and Fernando Villena and follows six students as they advance through the monologue competition, which highlights the work of the playwright behind “Fences” and “The Piano Lesson” and allows winners the chance to perform at the August Wilson Theater on Broadway.
The documentary specifically looks at students from public schools pursuing careers in performance arts, and it uses Wilson’s words to focus on the black experience in America and how words and voices can be ignited to inspire change. Netflix plans to release “Giving Voice” later this year.

Are you sitting down, folks? The New York Film Festival has revealed that Martin Scorsese's The Irishman will boast a running time of... wait for it... 210 minutes. That is exactly 3-and-one-half-hours. You could literally watch Crank and Crank: High Voltage in that time frame, and still have roughly 10 minutes to spare. Now, I know what you're thinking. 3.5 hours? That's a lot of movie. Why are movies so freakin' long these days? Well, normally I would agree, but when it's Scorsese teaming up with Robert De Niro and Joe …...

” ‘Crank 3‘ is going to happen. The studios are really excited about it — it’s just all about timing,” director Mark Neveldine proclaimed in 2011, but seven years later there has been absolutely no movement on that front. The sad fact is that while “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage” occupied a weird part of the pop culture conversation between 2006 and 2009, by time the second movie rolled out, the allure of Jason Statham essentially killing himself to stay alive started to wear out.

Momentum Pictures has released the first poster for the upcoming dark comedy Mom and Dad, which comes just a few weeks after the crazy trailer was unleashed late last month. In case you missed it, we have the first footage below, along with this one-sheet revealing some of the most intense scenes from this twisted thriller that presents a frightening scenario for any parent and child. This pitch-black horror-comedy is set during a worldwide mass hysteria where, for 24 brutal hours, parents turn violently against their own children.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and would later screen at Fantastic Fest later that month and at the Stiges Film Festival last October. The film also stars Anne Winters as Carly Ryan, the daughter of Brent (Nicolas Cage) and Kendall Ryan (Selma Blair), Zackary Arthur as the youngest Ryan child, Josh, Olivia Crocicchia as Carly's friend Riley,...

Cinema cannot save us. It’s not going to force Donald Trump to resign from office. It isn’t going to soften the hearts of Republicans who want to destroy the economic future of the current generation of American youths. It isn’t going to halt global warming. It is not going to end things like racism and transphobia and homophobia. Roger Ebert once famously said that cinema is an empathy machine, but the notion of such an idea is more complex than simply saying cinema can change the world through its narrative achievements. Cinema can foster empathy, but only on a case by case person by person basis, and what are we to do if the films that do force viewers to think aren’t available in the small towns and lower economic areas of the world? If these films that can have a positive effect on viewers and...

"We have to get out of the house before mom and dad come home!" Momentum Pictures has released the trailer for Mom and Dad, a wild 'n crazy action movie from Brian Taylor, one half of "Neveldine/Taylor" (of Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance). The concept for this is nuts - something starts making parents go crazy and kill their kids. Yeah, seriously, the opening act shows this and it's freaky. Two kids smarten up and try to safely evade their parents until the madness dies down. Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star as the parents, and Anne Winters and Zackary Arthur as their kids. I saw this movie at the Sitges Film Festival and it's fun, in a very wicked way, but it's not that great. It's a quick, throwaway late night movie when there's nothing better to watch - and Cage's craziness fits perfectly.

Patton Oswalt defines the protagonist in Syfy’s new comedic thriller “Happy!” by referencing a classic buddy picture. “Remember in ‘Midnight Run,’ when Charles Grodin is telling DeNiro, ‘the reason you have an ulcer is that you have two modes of expression: Silence and rage’? That’s Nick Sax,” Oswalt told co-star Christopher Meloni, who plays the lead character. “It’s either glowering silence and then just explosive and it’s hilarious.”
It’s not a bad way to sum up the relationship between Meloni’s and Oswalt’s chatacters in “Happy!”, which premieres this Wednesday. But here’s the big difference: Rather than playing somewhat sane humans, Meloni stars as incredibly unstable private investigator Nick Sax, and Oswalt is the voice of Happy, a CGI flying unicorn who is either a figment of Nick’s imagination or the manifestation of a little girl’s imaginary friend.
Either way, only Nick can see Happy,...

Musical chameleon Mike Patton has announced that he's working on a score for the Netflix adaptation of the Stephen King novella 1922. In November of last year, it was announced that Netflix would be making a movie based on King's short story. Zak Hilditch will direct the movie based off of the screenplay that he wrote. The story is told through the narration of the main character who confesses to murdering his wife and later believes that she is haunting him. Not much else has been revealed about the movie, but we have learned that Mike Patton has already composed the score.

Movies like The Accountant used to be a dime a dozen, or at least they felt like that, a simple action movie with a low-a-list or high-b-list actor just filling time in the schedule. Now it feels like all of these movies have become franchise entries instead, a safer attempt at the same money as star power has become less important and licenses have become king. The Accountant is a by-the-books action movie with a gimmick, the main character is supposed to have Asperger syndrome, and it relies on that gimmick and the charm of the cast. It’s an exceptionally charming cast, and it’s capable of pushing a rather cliché movie through all of the rougher parts. I like The Accountant despite the things it does badly and, maybe a little bit, because of them.
I’ve seen some variation of The Accountant’s story a million times.

A new list reckons it's worked out the films that have most divided audiences since the year 2000...
There are movies that people love, there are movies that people hate. Perhaps the most fun? The ones that seem to divide people down the middle.
