Jennifer’s Body should have done far better than it did at the box office, even if it was in the poster alone: a red-hot Megan Fox (already a sex symbol of the Maxim variety) in a short dress sitting on top of a desk that’s hiding a severed body part. But it didn’t work – and it’s the marketing itself that co-star Amanda Seyfried thinks is to blame for the audience not finding Jennifer’s Body.
Speaking with GQ (via EW), Amanda Seyfried said that the reason Jennifer’s Body only made $16 million domestically had to do with how Fox bungled the way to pitch it to audiences. “If the critics criticize anything, it would be the marketing. The marketing sucked. It just did, and we all agree…The marketing team cheapened it, like it was just, you know, a romp. A gory romp. I think they ruined it.

Reports suggest tongues are being removed from cheeks for a new version of Robert A Heinlein’s militaristic space opera. Is this due to Trump 2.0?
If there is a modern day equivalent in Hollywood to Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, he or she must be hiding in the nearest underground space bunker, desperately praying that irony makes a comeback. Verhoeven arrived at a time when transgressive “video nasties” were just fading into irrelevance, a period in which filmgoers were just as likely to head to the cinemas for schlocky thrills as they were for biting sci-fi allegory. With films such as 1987’s RoboCop, 1990’s Total Recall and 1997’s Starship Troopers, Verhoeven managed to combine a high-energy, hyper-kinetic thrust that has rarely been achieved since. He remains one of the most subversive and controversial film-makers of his generation – which is why it’s so depressing that Hollywood keeps churning out substandard remakes of his best work.

“Starship Troopers” are back. And they’ve found the man to lead them into battle.
Neill Blomkamp has been hired by Columbia Pictures to write and direct a new version of the story, this time going back to the original story by Robert A. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.
The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.
“Starship Troopers” had been adapted once before, in 1997, by “RoboCop” director Paul Verhoeven and writer Edward Neumeier for TriStar Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. That version leaned into the political satire, full of fascistic imagery and jingoistic propagandizing. That hard R-rated film starred Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico,...

A new take on Starship Troopers is happening at Sony, with District 9 and Elysium filmmaker Neill Blomkamp set to direct.
According to a new report, Neill Blomkamp has set up a new Starship Troopers project at Sony. The director of District 9, one of the greatest science fiction films of the 2000s, is reportedly writing and directing the film, which will of course follow in the footsteps of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie of the same name. However, according to the report over at Deadline, the film isn’t a remake of Verhoeven’s film and will instead hew closer to Robert A Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.
While Verhoeven’s sci-fi action film didn’t set the box office alight on its release, its blend of enjoyable cheesiness, nail-biting action and satirical take on neo-conservatism and the military industrial complex eventually found an audience on the growing home format market.

Neill Blomkamp, the visionary director behind the critically acclaimed District 9, has faced both massive success and challenges in his career. Known for his distinctive style of science fiction, Blomkamp was ambitious to take on the Alien franchise after announcing plans for a direct sequel to the 1986 movie Alien. However, the production was abruptly halted in 2015.

Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the guy who gave us ‘District 9,’ a movie that mixed aliens and real-world grit in a way that stuck with people. Now he’s diving into Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I’m already curious about what he’ll do with it.
This isn’t a redo of the 1997 ‘Starship Troopers’ film that Paul Verhoeven made. That one, with its over-the-top military vibes and bug battles, starred folks like Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien, and Neil Patrick Harris. It cost over $100 million to make but only pulled in $121 million at the box office. Still, it found a second life as a cult favorite. Blomkamp’s version, though, is skipping that satire and going...

Movies To Watch If You Liked ‘The Electric State’ on Netflix: Anthony and Joe Russo have had one of the most fascinating career trajectories of any filmmakers working in Hollywood. Despite having only a few comedy features to their name, the duo was hired to revolutionize the Marvel Cinematic Universe when they crafted “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which was instantly hailed as one of the greatest comic book films ever made. Although the Russo brothers continued to earn praise for their subsequent work on “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” their work outside of Marvel Studios has been rather disappointing.

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is set to reimagine StarshipTroopers for a new adaptation that will strip the franchise back to the basic elements of the sci-fi novel. The tale was originally brought to screens in 1997 by Paul Verhoeven, exploring the conflict between a futuristic space-faring and highly-propagandized militaristic society and a race of insectoid aliens. A cult-classic thanks to its VFX, action and over-the-top satirical exploration of fascism and propaganda, Starship Troopers has grown in appreciation, influence, and relevance with time.
The Hollywood Reporterreports that Blomkamp has been recruited by Sony to helm a new adaptation of StarshipTroopers for the big screen. Blomkamp will write and direct the feature, as well as serve as a producer alongside wife and frequent collaborator Terri Tatchell following their works on District 9 and Chappie. Rather than remaking Verhoeven's 1997 film, the upcoming feature will base itself directly on the original 1959 novel written by Robert A. Heinlein.

District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is set to write and direct a new adaptation of Starship Troopers, based on the 1959 science fiction fantasy novel from Robert A. Heinlein. The name likely sounds familiar to you due to the popular 1997 cinematic adaptation by Paul Verhoeven, but it is being reported (exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter) that Blomkamp's film will not be a remake of that film.
Blomkamp will produce his iteration with longtime collaborator and wife, Terri Tatchell, who also co-wrote District 9 with the director, as well as the oft-maligned 2015 film, Chappie. Columbia Pictures — home of the original film adaptation — will also produce this iteration of the controversial military story. But according to THR's sources, the more satirical take of the original film will likely not be found in this new version, with the goal of Blomkamp's movie to be to hew more closely to the source material.

In 1997, director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier, the makers of 1987's "RoboCop," reteamed to make "Starship Troopers," a satirical take on Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel. "Starship Troopers" takes place in a future where Earth has, for many decades, been at war with giant, intelligent insects from a distant planet. Human society, however, has devolved into a fascist state, and people have all become empty-headed, fist-pumping propaganda vehicles. Media has become bite-sized, and in-your-face. It's no coincidence that the humans are all wearing very Nazi-like uniforms by the film's end.
"Starship Troopers" wasn't fully appreciated in 1997. It got mostly negative reviews, and many critics didn't seem to pick up on its more satirical elements. It was also only a modest hit, making $121 million on a $100 million budget (sizable at the time). Since then, however, it found its audience, proliferating on home video and on the midnight movie circuit. Its...

Neill Blomkamp is doing his part. The “District 9” and “Chappie” filmmaker is attached to write and direct a new film adaptation of “Starship Troopers,” the 1959 sci-fi novel by Robert A. Heinlein that was last memorably brought to theaters in 1997 by director Paul Verhoeven. The new project comes from Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

THR reports that Neill Blomkamp will write and direct a new Starship Troopers movie for Columbia Pictures. The report states that this won’t be a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic, but will follow the original novel by Robert A. Heinlein, which was published in 1959.
The novel follows Juan “Johnny” Rico as he joins the Federal Service and goes through the toughest boot camp in the universe as an interstellar war between Earth and an alien species known as Arachnids rages on. Although the novel was very successful, even winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, some have criticized it for its militaristic and fascist elements. Verhoeven took the concept to the extreme for his movie, presenting a satire of authoritarian governance.

We’ve confirmed that a new Starship Troopers is happening at Sony with District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp writing and directing.
The new movie will go back to the 1959 source material by Robert A. Heinlein and not be based on the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie. The original movie was something of a misfire at the time of release, made for $100M and only making $121.2M worldwide. Clearly, legacy has been on the astronauts versus bugs’ side.

Johnny Rico is coming back to kill some more bugs.
Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, setting District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein.
Blomkamp will also produce the feature alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote the South African filmmaker’s District 9 and 2015 outing, Chappie.
Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.
While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

This post contains some spoilers for "Mickey 17."
In Bong Joon Ho's new sci-fi film "Mickey 17," Robert Pattinson played the titular Mickey, a low-paid grunt on a distant spaceship. As the previews have made explicit, Mickey is an "Expendable," that is: when he dies, he can easily be cloned — or "printed" — and replaced within a day. Needless to say, Mickey is selected for the ship's most dangerous missions. By the time audiences catch up with him, he's on his 17th printing.
Mickey lives on a ship of conservative cultists who worship a Trump-like televangelist named Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo). Marshall is so hated on Earth that he left on a long-distance spacecraft to find an interplanetary haven he plans on calling Niflheim. Throughout "Mickey 17," he and his horrid wife Ylfa (Toni Collette) talk about how they're seeking a genetically pure stock, making it abundantly clear that they're Evangelical eugenicists.

South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is nothing short of a visionary. Whether you find yourself eagerly awaiting his next venture or not, there's no denying his sustained ability to imbue his works with his distinct style. This is especially true when he's operating under budget constraints, with pure ingenuity as the most powerful element of his arsenal. Tetra Vaal, an early work of Blomkamp's, may best exemplify this. Despite a runtime of less than 2 minutes, this short film delivers a wholly fleshed-out worldview within a deeply visceral setting. Although Blomkamp is best known for his thematically connected trilogy of films, beginning with 2009's District 9, his DIY roots never disappeared. Elysiumcame next in 2013, upping the ante with the star power of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this.” We won’t have to wait much longer to see how well they did kill it, as Rlje Films will be giving Ash a nationwide theatrical release on March 21st – and in anticipation of that release, a teaser trailer and a teaser poster have been unveiled. It's safe to say Philippa Boyens knows her way around a J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. After getting her start in the world of theater, the playwright made her screenwriting debut co-writing the script for Peter Jackson's beloved original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, winning an Oscar for "The Return of the King." In addition to her work on films like "King Kong," "The Lovely Bones," "District 9," and "Mortal Engines," Boyens co-wrote and co-produced "The Hobbit" trilogy and will be mining Tolkien's writing yet again in the upcoming "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," which has Gollum actor Andy Serkis on board as a director.
But first, Boyens has explored Middle-earth in a new way by producing and cooking up the story for "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," the first anime feature film set in this universe. /Film's review calls it "dazzling but inessential,...

District 10, a potential sequel to District 9, has been on the rumor mill for years as fans inquire about its development status.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp (known recently for his work on Gran Turismo), District 9 explores the story of aliens coming to Earth seeking refuge from their dying planet. They head to an area of South Africa called District 9, where a group called Multi-National United watches over them as an alien virus threatens the planet.
The film performed well financially, grossing $211 million worldwide at the box office on a $30 million budget, with many wondering if the story would ever continue.

15 years on, 2009 looks to be one of the best years for cinema in the 21st century. Several iconic directors produced some of their best work in 2009, including Kathryn Bigelow, Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. The year also delivered some surprise hits, like Neil Blomkamp's District 9, which came out of nowhere to shake up the sci-fi genre and establish the director as a name worth keeping an eye on.
At the box office, the big story of 2009 was the record-breaking success of Avatar, which is something that continues to shape the movie industry. Other big financial winners were Pixar's Up, which is yet another animated classic from the studio, and The Hangover, which is the kind of comedy that probably wouldn't be as successful in today's industry. 2009's best movies encompass dramas, sci-fi, horror and more.

To date, there have been 13 "Star Trek" feature films, with a 14th movie, "Section 31," scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. The films are, many Trekkies would agree, various degrees of good and bad. Some of the "Star Trek" films are among the best sci-fi movies ever made, while others are handily the worst. Many agree that Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best one, although J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" is the highest-grossing. The four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- that is: "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis" -- are all pretty middling, although many like the Borg action from "First Contact." My personal favorites are Robert Wise's 1979 epic "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for its cerebral grandiosity, and Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" for its political bent.
The films also fluctuate wildly in mere production quality.

Director Neill Blomkamp is best known for his gritty, allegorical sci-fi films. There’s the alien apartheid District 9 (2009), working class and immigrant team-up Elysium (2013), and a look into the cyclical nature of crime in Chappie (2015). His movies create worlds that feel real, lived in, and now he’s turning his talents to the upcoming video game Off the Grid.

Director Neill Blomkamps divisive science fiction action outing Elysium will be available to stream for free this month. And it might be time to give the movie another chance. Written and directed by Blomkamp in his second feature film following the success of the acclaimed District 9, Elysium stars Matt Damon as a lowly worker on a ravaged and overpopulated Earth who, like the majority of humanity, longs to go to the luxurious artificial world known as "Elysium." After suffering an accident and being given a powerful (and visually striking) exoskeleton, he might just get that chance.

Directors like Hitchcock, Craven, and Carpenter have set the standard for the genre as rising horror directors today including Ari Aster and Jordan Peele make their mark on film with their own style of scare tactics.

Alien invasion movies generally come with a big budget, elaborate special effects, and exaggerated plots involving intense action sequences, but District 9 took the popular alien invasion trope and went in an entirely unexpected direction with it. Many elements in District 9 have been used in other alien movies, including found footage, prejudice, secret government facilities, and even the storyline, in which a person who begins firmly on one side finds themselves sympathizing with the opposing side. However, District 9 created something entirely new, which resulted in reviews of District 9 being mostly positive.
Most of District 9 takes place 20 years after the aliens arrive. They have been segregated, are known as "prawns," and live in a slum: District 9. One of the aliens, Christopher Johnson, intends to escape with his son during a planned relocation led by Wikus van de Merwe, who has an accident and starts transforming into an alien himself,...

Neill Blomkamp will follow the success of Gran Turismo with Alpha, starring Aaron Paul as an FBI agent hunting a prison inmate turned into an apex predator.
Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.
The last project on that list may yet happen, some day. Blomkamp began talking about a sequel to his beloved science fiction movie back in 2021, with star Sharlto Copley adding a couple of years ago that it was still at least a year away from shooting. We’re now two years on and there’s still no sign of the film coming together.

Ridley Scott’s original Alien film set the benchmark for sci-fi storytelling. Its claustrophobic setting and practical ‘alien’ creatures led to some terrifying scenes, elevated by the performances of its lead cast. The success of the film spawned the Alien franchise and the latest installment Alien: Romulus is running successfully in theaters.

Damon's sci-fi streak with Elysium, Interstellar, and The Martian showcased a new side to his acting career. Despite The Instigators' mixed reviews, Damon's return to sci-fi could secure him an Oscar in the future. Damon conquered the sci-fi genre with risky choices, proving he's open to new challenges beyond action roles.
Matt Damon's sci-fi movie streak that ended with The Martian revealed a massive truth about his career. While the beloved actor, screenwriter, and producer is celebrated to this day for his action roles and his Boston-themed dramas, Damon's career made a strong pivot in 2013 with the release of Elysium, which introduced Damon to the sci-fi blockbuster. Damon then went on to have a surprise cameo in Christopher Nolan's celebrated intergalactic film Interstellar before starring in Ridley Scott's The Martian, which was nominated for 7 Oscars. These three sci-fi outer space movies remain some of the strongest installments of his acting career.

There have been many concepts and ideas for the Alien franchise that have never come to fruition, but one of the most ambitious potential projects has to be Neill Blomkamp's Alien sequel. The same filmmaker behind District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, Blomkamp's reputation for creating gritty, realistic sci-fi worlds made him a prime candidate for a new Alien film. The announcement of his involvement also came at a fortuitous time for the series, since original Alien creator Ridley Scott was hard at work on the Prometheus prequel saga.

Stanley Tucci wanted to turn down his role in The Lovely Bones, but he needed the work. Peter Jackson was not originally supposed to direct The Lovely Bones. The Lovely Bones was either praised by critics or totally lampooned upon its release in 2009.
Stanley Tucci is the type of actor audiences won't tend to see in the same kind of role twice. He's played art directors, doting husbands, and even serial killers. In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Tucci voiced that there's one role in particular he'd never want to play again: George Harvey in The Lovely Bones (2009). Starring a young Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, and Susan Sarandon, The Lovely Bones is based on a 2002 bestselling book of the same name by Alice Sebold. The book is a first-person narrative from the perspective of a 14-year-old girl named Susie Salmon (Ronan), who is the victim of a murder in 1973 small-town America.
