According to a new report, Neill Blomkamp has set up a new Starship Troopers project at Sony. The director of District 9, one of the greatest science fiction films of the 2000s, is reportedly writing and directing the film, which will of course follow in the footsteps of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie of the same name. However, according to the report over at Deadline, the film isn’t a remake of Verhoeven’s film and will instead hew closer to Robert A Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.

While Verhoeven’s sci-fi action film didn’t set the box office alight on its release, its blend of enjoyable cheesiness, nail-biting action and satirical take on neo-conservatism and the military industrial complex eventually found an audience on the growing home format market.

Neill Blomkamp, the visionary director behind the critically acclaimed District 9, has faced both massive success and challenges in his career. Known for his distinctive style of science fiction, Blomkamp was ambitious to take on the Alien franchise after announcing plans for a direct sequel to the 1986 movie Alien. However, the production was abruptly halted in 2015.

Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, setting District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein.

Blomkamp will also produce the feature alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote the South African filmmaker’s District 9 and 2015 outing, Chappie.

Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.

While the book won a Hugo Award for best novel and has been quite influential in sci-fi literature, some quarters described the book as fascist.

District 10, a potential sequel to District 9, has been on the rumor mill for years as fans inquire about its development status.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp (known recently for his work on Gran Turismo), District 9 explores the story of aliens coming to Earth seeking refuge from their dying planet. To date, there have been 13 "Star Trek" feature films, with a 14th movie, "Section 31," scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. The films are, many Trekkies would agree, various degrees of good and bad. Some of the "Star Trek" films are among the best sci-fi movies ever made, while others are handily the worst. Many agree that Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best one, although J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" is the highest-grossing. The four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- that is: "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis" -- are all pretty middling, although many like the Borg action from "First Contact." My personal favorites are Robert Wise's 1979 epic "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for its cerebral grandiosity, and Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" for its political bent. 

The films also fluctuate wildly in mere production quality.

With a long list of visionary creators at the helm, from Ridley Scott to James Cameron, the genre continues to deliver for fans around the world. While many of these movies are typically made with mainstream audiences in mind, there's also no shortage of more mature sci-fi films, whose themes land them an R rating.

R-rated science fiction often deals with more realistic and disturbing aspects of science fiction, addressing topics like dystopia, disastrous experiments, and full-blown horror. At the same time, these films also typically make for the most creative and imaginative uses of the genre, refusing to hold back in their exploration of fantastical ideas. For these reasons and more, a good R-rated science fiction film can stand alongside the best films in cinematic history.

Nothing is more terrifying than sitting in anticipation in the dark waiting for that unexpected jump scare mastered over the decades by directors who have defined the horror genre since the 1920s with spooky monsters, ghoulish demons and scream queens.

Directors like Hitchcock, Craven, and Carpenter have set the standard for the genre as rising horror directors today including Ari Aster and Jordan Peele make their mark on film with their own style of scare tactics.

Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.

The last project on that list may yet happen, some day. Skibidi Toilet is a viral web series with short videos following a toilet with a talking head inside.
