John Carpenter's influence on the horror genre is matched by few, and there is a good reason why his name is held in such high regard. Carpenter essentially created the modern slasher genre with Halloween; he was not the first, but he established the rules that many still go by to this day. Halloween brought horror to suburbia, challenged conventional norms of the genre, and created a minimalist masterpiece that terrified and obsessed a whole generation of horror movie fans.
There are countless iconic scenes in the movie; from the opening of a young Micheal Meyers making his first kill to Annie's death at the hands of the masked killer. However, there is one scene in particular that draws influence from a true crime case that shocked the United States; the murder of Kitty Genovese.

Featuring: Zeph E. Daniel, Julian Sands, Brian Yuzna, Screaming Mad George, Richard Stanley | Directed by Larry Wade Carrell
It’s one of the most controversial, influential and groundbreaking horror satires of the 1980s. Brian Yuzna’s Society told a terrifying surreality of what the rich were doing to the poor in shocking, sexual detail. But did you know it was based on truth and took inspiration from the satanic ritual abuse carried out by the Beverly Hills elite Keith family? Or that son Woody Keith changed his name to Zeph E. Daniel and co-scripted Society to exorcise the demons from his violent youth? This is the full, appalling story of how Daniel’s autobiography became a classic chiller for the ages.
Have you read that official synopsis above? Does it sound bizarre? Well, this documentary is more bizarre than you can imagine!

Lights On, the Turin-based world sales company, has made a double swoop on Locarno titles, taking international sales rights to Lucy Kerr’s “Family Portrait” and “Dreaming & Dying” (“Hao Jiu Bu Jian”), written and directed by Singapore’s Nelson Yeo.
Both play in Locarno’s Cineasti del Presenti Sierra, focused on new talent. Locarno’s 2023 lineup was announced July 5.
‘Family Portrait’
The first feature from Kerr, a Texas-born filmmaker and video and installation artist, “Family Portrait” turns on a sprawling Texas family that gets together on a morning to take a group picture.
The mother disappears; the rest of the family seem reluctant to take the photos; one of the daughters, Katy, sets off to find her. Doing so, the synopsis says, she loses herself and her family.
Written by Kerr, “Family Portrait’s” key cast includes Deragh Campbell, Chris Galust “Give Me Liberty”), Rachel Alig (“Girl Next”) and Katie Folger (“Day 5”). Insufficient Funds,...

Opening with a scene featuring a young woman strapped to a chair, legs in stirrups and screaming for her life as a man places what can only be described as a rather brutal looking corkscrew between her legs, The Next Girl sets its stall out very early.
Kidnap, torture and trauma are seemingly the name of the day in director Larry Wade Carrell’s latest feature, which sees a young woman, Lorien (Lacey Cofran), abducted by a strange group of human traffickers who use drug and trauma-based mind control to turn women into “Sofia” dolls. Trapped in a waking nightmare she fights for a way to escape, to avoid becoming the titular next girl…

When Mia Berrin first began performing as Pom Pom Squad around 2017, audience members would approach her after shows and admit that they’d been surprised by how much they’d enjoyed themselves.
“More than once, someone came up to me and was like, ‘I expected to hate you,’” she says, laughing it off, from her Bushwick, Brooklyn apartment. “Or the other one, especially from dudes, was often ‘I thought you guys were going to be a cute girl band.’”
