International Sales Agents are the core of the current international film market system – i.e., the buying and selling of films worldwide. Half of the approximately 450 worldwide ISAs are based in La, the rest spread around the globe, but it matters little in a business sense where they are based. They gather together during the upcoming American Film Market November 6 in Santa Monica, California, in Berlin at the European Film Market February 6, 2014, and at the Cannes Marche in May as well as other events around the world to license rights to their films to distributors coming from every corner of the world. Their films also originate from every corner of the world.
Shoreline has been selling to the international film market since 1992. Morris Ruskin sat down last week for a chat with me here in La. I sum up our discussion as follows, after I add that Morris’ friendship and professionalism (and good taste!), is in general one of the principal reasons we like this film business. When we travel, which is frequent, it is people like Morris who light up the distant locations for us and, while both of us are L.A. based, we often only see each other throughout the year at various film business related events in remote places such as Cannes, Berlin, Bahamas., etc.
Morris Ruskin was born in South Africa to anti-Apartheid parents. He left there, along with parents and three older sisters, at age 9, to move to Boston where his Dad went to Harvard Business School. Then they moved to Bermuda for 3 years. When Morris was 15 his mother attended graduate school at UCLA School of Theater. There he met Athol Fugard, the South African playwright about whom his mother did her dissertation.
Many years later, Morris Executive Produced Master Harold & the Boys and dedicated the movie to his mother. He fell in love with L.A. and the movies in high school in L.A. His best friend lured him into filmmaking through Super 8 films which they recreated --movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Blues Brothers. Attending UCLA he wrote screenplays, some of which were optioned and he became an intern at MTV, an experience he considered at that time to be “the new frontier” of entertainment.
He soon became employed at Zupnik Entertainment Enterprises, staying for 6 years. He began as a script reader, then moved up to become the Director of Development and finally became a Vice President. His high water mark there was as a Co-Producer for the high profile very successful film, Glengarry Glen Ross.
He began Shoreline in 1992 on his own with a financial partner. It started as a production company. He then had operating money to run the company but No income. Projects were set up at New Line, Warner Brothers and various sales companies but they all got stuck in development. He figured out that there were two viable ways to make money in the business – selling movies worldwide and managing talent. Because he worked very closely with the sales company, New Line, on Glengarry Glen Ross, he decided to start a sales company. In 1995 he hired sales people to sell films and within six months he had three films in play. Morris says this meant “we were off to the races”. He then began to pick up / or acquire other films to sell.
He continues to branch out. In 2012 he formed a management company for directors, writers and writer / directors.
When we spoke he was intensely proud of a new film he served as Executive Producer on, Pablo, which was opening the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival this past October. This is a Spanish language feature documentary about graphic artist, trailer and title maker, Pablo Ferro, narrated by Jeff Bridges. Pablo was Kubrick’s title designer. Born in Cuba, he migrated as a teen to New York and had, as Morris expresses it, “a rags to riches and back to rags life”. The documentary is a representation for how difficult it can be to make it as an artist in the business. Perhaps it resonates with Morris as he has been able to successfully balance the art of filmmaking with the business side of selling movies.
For Morris Shoreline is a “purposely eclectic” company. His team acquires and sells feature narrative films and documentaries. They pick up “foreign language” (meaning – non English language) films and art house indies. On the commercial side they sell “genre” pictures, thrillers, horror.
Now that sales are successful, Morris now focuses his daily work on management, production, financing. He has produced approximately fifty films. Two of those films were directed by his high school friend who introduced him to filmmaking through Super 8 movies! Shoreline tends to be very loyal to the filmmakers it works with. If it picks up someone’s finished film, often Morris works with that filmmaker to produce the next film and perhaps even to manage him or her. As a producer Morris has had many award winning films and multiple films in Sundance and at The Toronto International Film Festival.
He has started a film financing company called Watermark. His partners here are the Swiss / London based Blue Pencil Investments. They will raise equity money for films, will give MGs (aka minimum guarantees) and sales advances. They will take all rights to world markets and license them to distributors through Shoreline.
A film he used to outline his way of working was the 2005 Sundance hit Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, a romantic film about a couple meeting in a charm school, starring Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman and a cameo from Danny DeVito. These elements gave it heat for sales – Sundance, good cast, mini majors involved and CAA. Lots of CAA talent were cast in film. CAA was also brought in to sell U.S. rights post and during Sundance. Goldwyn acquired the film for U.S. distribution. For this deal CAA was proof (to the market) that the film had “the best elements”.
Another successful film out of Sundance in 2007 was The Signal which had a Usd $50,000 budget and made over $3 million Usd from the U.S. alone.
Shoreline acquires and sells lots of Spanish language films now. Some recent titles are Rabbit Woman, The Precocious and Brief Life of Sabina Rivas and 7 Boxes which has been to as many as seventy five film festivals.
Morris’ main philosophy for Shoreline films is, “get the films out in the biggest way possible”. Often these days this means going firstly to festivals as there is often no theatrical release. Festivals can lead to or even replace theatrical. Festivals spread the word, help marketing, get films seen and reviewed, and can even mean income when a festival will pay a screening fee.
Some recent titles he is proud of include A Perfect Man with Liev Schreiber which will be released theatrically in North America by IFC on November 1st, A Farewell To Fools with Harvey Keitel and Gerard Depardieu which will be released theatrically in North America by Monterey Media in the Spring. (About Liev Schreiber Morris says “a good name really helps” and he says that sometimes the films with known cast sell best). Also The Geography Club, which premiered at OutFest and will be released theatrically in North America by Breaking Glass on November 15th, the aforementioned 7 Boxes which will also be released theatrically in North America by Breaking Glass in February, and Baal Shem Tov, a Jewish film in clay animation which Morris says is a very rare film medium and because it belongs in a niche which has attracted much attention.

Shoreline’s website says the following about Morris’ work and career.
During the course of producing more than fifty films, Morris has structured deals that incorporate deferments, soft money and international co-productions in order to create financially-viable motion pictures. These productions focus on bankable genre content and star-driven projects that can secure success in a sometimes-uneven marketplace.
Notable amongst such productions are the modern classic Glengarry Glen Ross (Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Alan Arkin) which led to an Academy Award Nomination for Al Pacino; The Man from Elysian Fields (Andy Garcia, Mick Jagger, Angelica Huston); The Visit (nominated for four Spirit Awards) and Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School (John Goodman, Marisa Tomei, Octavia Spencer, Robert Carlyle, Danny DeVito).
Morris is no stranger to the festival circuit having films in the most distinguished festivals worldwide such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and Sundance, where The Signal was sold in a multi million dollar bidding war hours after the world premiere.
Morris’s productions have spanned a variety of genres and locations, from a stereoscopic RealD 3D-animated film based on a comic book being released by Anchor Bay (The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse) to a wartime dark comedy starring Harvey Keitel and Gérard Depardieu (A Farewell to Fools). A documentary narrated by Jeff Bridges (Pablo), a co-production shot on location in China ( Wushu Warrior) a comedy that was the opening night gala film at Slamdance (Weirdsville), an action thriller shot in India starring Harvey Keitel (Beeper), a heist crime caper starring
Timothy Olyphant that premiered in The Berlin International Film Festival (High Life) and a South African feature dedicated to Morris’s mother (Master Harold And the Boys).
By consistently developing and acquiring projects that are attractive to domestic and foreign markets alike, Morris has ensured for over twenty years that Shoreline remains a stable yet versatile and ever-evolving organization.

The last time we caught up with GravyTrain team of April Mullen and Tim Doiron, the duo had just released their follow-up to Rock, Paper Scissors: The Way of the Tosser, a buddy cop comedy titled GravyTrain (review) on DVD. Canada's Genie Awards were held this week and Incendies, which you'll remember was up for the Foreign Film Oscar, was the big winner. The "runner up" as it were, the movie that did very well for itself that didn't win the big one, was Barney's Version which was just Rosamund Pike short of sweeping all the acting trophies. Curiously, if you trust photos from the big event the Barney's Version team was curiously absent. That's so uncool when you win that many awards!
Melissa Etheridge performed (anyone know what song?) and here's a photo of presenters Mia Kirshner (more on her in a bit) and Rossif Sutherland. Yes, he's another spawn of Donald Sutherland -- I didn't know there was a post Kiefer! -- he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for a film called High Life. I think Timothy Olyphant is immensely watchable in anything he does.
He can take the most under-written character and turn it into something unique. And he can take a terrific character and make that even better. Deadwood, Damages, Live Free or Die Hard and now, Justified are just some of the examples I’m talking about.
As ‘Us Marshal Raylan Givens’ in Justified, he told me he can’t take full credit for his great work. He just say’s the words and tries to bring the character to life, he said.
I talked to him in a conference call about his work on the show, what his producing credit means and how some actors kind of stink – those are my words not his!
Justified airs on Wednesdays at 10pm on FX

We salute one of Hollywood’s most underappreciated actors, and pick out ten of Timothy Olyphant’s finest movies...
Like so many of my on-screen heroes, Timothy Olyphant manages to fit the profile of being utterly superb and massively underappreciated, with the constant ability to make every film he’s in better.
Despite appearances in some high profile movies, a starring role that will launch him to the level he deserves, one that cements his name in mainstream consciousness, still seems elusive.
Olyphant’s TV work has seen success from the swear-a-thon that is Deadwood, a recurring role in Damages with Glenn Close and as Raylan Givens, the cowboy hat wearing, shoot first, ask questions later U.S. Marshall in Justified, whose second series is currently airing on FX.
He’s now on our screens in DreamWorks’ I Am Number Four, as well as lending his voice to the fantastic-looking Rango,...

After being snubbed by the major Hollywood awards, only receiving 1 nomination and win for Paul Giamatti at the Golden Globes, Barney’s Version has been highly recognized by Canadian audiences. [Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]
Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.
I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.
I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

In this installment of The Television Balcony, I show you what happens when Justified's Timothy Olyphant ends up way, way on the other side of the law. Here's a hint: it's not pretty. Yet it is very, very hilarious.
High Life (2009) had me from the first scene. It's 1983, and there's a shootout going on outside a bank between some very unsavory-looking people and the cops. In the middle of this, Olyphant's character Dick chooses that moment to tell us via voiceover, "As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a lawyer."
It's ironic, it's a little inappropriate, and it's hilarious.
That's the kind of film this is.
You see, those four unsavory-looking guys? Those are actually our protagonists. They're a set of hapless junkies who somehow got it into their heads that robbing a bank would be a good idea. The audience is aware from frame one that it really wasn't.

With a title like High Life, it’s doesn’t take a genius, or even watching a trailer, to give you an idea what Canadian director Gary Yates’ new film is all about. But just in case…
It’s 1983. Bank machines are being introduced into the banking system and individuals are still carrying their pin numbers in their wallets. Dick is a reformed convict, a bad guy with a drug problem (morphine, it’s legal and the “intelligent addict’s” choice drug) who is trying to live life straight. His buddy Bug, gets out of jail, comes to see him and sends Dick’s pathetic existence into a tailspin. Dick puts together a crew (which includes his buddy Donnie and the pretty faced Billy) and a plan which seems to be perfect.

If you like films about bank robberies, you're probably waiting for the release of High Life. The film will come out in some Canadian cities on January 15, 2010.
The story is set in 1983 right after the birth of Automated Teller Machines (Atm). Dick (Timothy Olyphant) just got fired from his job as a janitor at a downtown hospital. With his buddies Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre), Donnie (Joe Anderson) and Billy (Rossif Sutherland), Dick plans to rob Atm machines. Besides, he wants the job to be done without violence. However, things don't go according to plan.
Finally, High Life is directed by Gary Yates (Seven Times Lucky) and written by Lee MacDougall, who adapts his own play which won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best New Play. Moreover, the film features the music of Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival and April Wine.

A hilarious portrait of male-pattern stupidity. Dick and his pals have been botching jobs and racking up prison time for years, but enough is enough, and Dick's got the perfect plan for one last heist. The catch? His crew is so rife with loathing, keeping them from killing each other is hard enough; getting them to the bank will take an absolute miracle.

Set in 1983, following the first implementation of 'Automated Teller Machines', "High Life" is a new Canadian feature, lensed in Winnipeg, written/directed by Gary Yates, starring Timothy Olyphant, Rossif Sutherland, Joe Anderson and Stephen McIntyre.
In "High Life", following a visit from his former cellmate 'Bug' (McIntyre), 'Dick' (Olyphant) gets fired from his job as a hospital janitor.
Unemployed and in need of fast cash, Dick gets the idea to rob a brand new Atm machine. Enter 'Donnie' (Anderson) and 'Billy' (Sutherland) to help put the pieces into place.
But things don't go quite according to plan...
"...Alternately tragic and hysterical, the 'High Life’ perfect plan ends up anything but when one of the bank’s employees double-crosses them all. Set against the nostalgic back-beat of 'Three Dog Night', 'Creedence Clearwater Revival' and a raft of 'April Wine', the 'High Life’ highwire tension unfolds with calamitous results.

[Our thanks to Andrew David Long for the following review.]
Based on the play of the same name, High Life is a smart, smart caper flick featuring not-so-bright criminals. In 1983, finding a weakness in the procedures around the newly prolific Automatic Teller Machines, a group of mostly-ex-con junkies plan a "victimless" heist in which they hope to score tens of thousands of dollars. Of course, when planned and executed by guys whose grasp of reality is near-constantly waylaid by a chemical cornucopia, is any plan perfect? Dick (Timothy Olyphant, ranging far from Deadwood territory) is the mastermind, at least when he's not trying to steal his ex-wife's car or scrounge for a little more morphine. His ex-cellmate Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre in a strangely sensitive portrayal of a hot-headed killer) is willing to go along with Dick's plan, though he doesn't exactly work well with... anyone else, really. Round out the gang with considerate pickpocket Donnie (Joe Anderson) and charmer...

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

I.ve admired Timothy Olyphant since his roles in High Life, Hitman and The Girl Next Door. Not only is he easy on the eyes, but he has a spectacular gift for infusing humor in the bad-guy role he embodies. You just can.t help but love him! I can.t say that I was all that familiar with Kiele Sanchez, who.s had parts include Stuck On You and Insanitarium. However, I totally understand why she...

I must confess that for some reason I've always quite liked Timothy Olyphant, he's made some terrible choices over the years, but I rate him as a good actor and a likable screen presence. Here, he's the reluctant leader of a group of misfits who stage a bank heist in the America of 1983, and it works really well.
Olyphant plays Dick, a hospital janitor who's done some serious time in prison, and only just managed to get his life back on track, albeit with a continuing dependency on morphine ("The drug of choice for the intelligent addict"), for which a job in a hospital can be useful. Out of the blue, his old cell-mate Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre) turns-up and manages to get him fired. Bug's a tough guy with a...

Crime comedy movie from director Gary Yates, "High Life", has shared a look into the film via its first trailer. Timed at 01:39, the trailer previews how Dick and his pals plot the perfect plan for one last heist. It also teases how they cannot stand being around each other and serves to be a hilarious portrait of male-pattern stupidity.
Teaming up Timothy Olyphant, Stephen Eric McIntyre, Rossif Sutherland and Joe Anderson as Dick, Bug, Billy and Donnie respectively, "High Life" follows a group of morphine addicts who has enough of botching jobs and racking up prison time for years. Having planned on one last perfect heist, Dick is faced with one major problem, his crew is so rife with fear and loathing.
If keeping them from killing each other is not hard enough, he has to get them to the bank with all the miracle he could get. Written...

Another trailer, another Berlinale premierer. This comedic crime drama about a bunch of addict morons trying to pull a heist got some great reviews. Variety had this to say: "...packs in more incident and twists than many movies 10 times its budget". Ok so that's not exactly glowing, but the trailer looks fantastic.

Dick and his pals have been botching jobs and racking up prison time for years, but enough is enough, and Dick's got the perfect plan for one last heist. The catch? Berlin -- Richard Loncraine's "My One and Only," a '50s-era comedy starring Renee Zellweger and Kevin Bacon, was squeezed into the competition lineup for this year's Berlin International Film Festival, barely a week before the event kicks off.
Zellweger plays a glamorous single mom on the hunt for a rich man to foot the bill for her and her sons' lifestyle. Produced by Merv Griffith Entertainment and Ray Gun Prods., "My One and Only" will have its world premiere in Berlin. Essential Entertainment is handling international sales.
Berlin also added Lone Scherfig's Sundance favorite "An Education" with Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina and Emma Thompson and Davis Guggenheim's music documentary "It Might Get Loud" for its Berlinale Special Galas, ensuring the films will get the red carpet treatment without any of the pressure of competition.

Oddly enough Dominic Murphy's White Lightnin' will be playing although it's having it's premier at Sundance.
