Shadow Recruit is the fifth film in the Jack Ryan series, preceded by The Hunt for Red October (1990) (1990), Patriot Games (1992) (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994) (1994), and The Sum of All Fears (2002) (2002). Unlike the four previous films, all of which were based on novels by American writer Tom Clancy, Shadow Recruit is based on an original story by American screenwriters Adam Cozad and David Koepp.

Based on the movie ticket that Cathy (Keira Knightley) pulls out of Jack's laundry, it is the end of 2012. The ticket reads 9/21/2012.

Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) learns that the presumed-dead Aleksandr Borovsky (Alec Utgoff), the son of Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), is actually in New York City as a sleeper agent and that he intends to drive a van full of explosives under Wall Street. Jack follows the van, eventually catching up with it. Borovsky and Ryan slug it out, and Ryan is able to gain control of the van, but Borovsky jumps in the back with the bomb. Desperately trying to drive the van and knock Borovsky out of it at the same time, Ryan realizes that he's not going to have time to defuse it. Instead, he drives the van to the end of a pier and jumps out just as the van goes over it. The van, the bomb, and Borovsky all hit the water, where the bomb explodes harmlessly. In Russia, Cherevin receives a call from Minister Sorokin (Mikhail Baryshnikov) summoning him for a meeting on a country road. As Sorokin drives by, Cherevin whispers, "It was always for Russia." Sorokin replies, "So is this," and shoots him. In the final scene, Ryan and Harper (Kevin Costner) are summoned to the White House to brief the president.
