Many cineastes think Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is the most influential film of all times. I would have to go with that. So would Feroz Khan, who’s been in two of the worst Godfather-influenced films of all time. Here’s saluting The Godfather clones, good, bad and the awful.
1. Dharmatma (1975):
Feroz Khan was always ahead of his time. So, it’s no surprise that he was the first Bollywood filmmaker to jump on the The Godfather bandwagon with this wildly out-of-control remake—an almost scene-by-scene reaffirmation of the original with Feroz playing Al Pacino and Premnath as Marlon Brando. A laughably crude homage to the original, the silver lining was the beauteous Hema Malini as Reshma, the exotic Afghani lass whom Michael, sorry Feroz, falls in love with. Hema dancing to Lataji’s ‘Mere galiyon se logon ki yaari ho gayi’ would have probably given Coppola...

In “My Dear Théo,” Alisa Kovalenko presents an unforgettable, searing, tender chronicle of the months she served on the frontline in Ukraine. We begin with February 2022, when she joins the volunteer army as the Russian occupation tightens its grip. Her son, Théo, goes to France where her husband has family. Kovalenko stays behind, fighting for her beleaguered country. For her, the war erupted much earlier, dating to 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea. Now, she feels particularly beholden that she must do her bit, not retreat and scamper off as the aggressor would want.
Kovalenko keeps a memory diary, recording the events of the day for herself, her son as well as history’s sake. She maintains she can shoot only when circumstances are relatively less tense, seemingly less precarious and there’s some semblance of fleeting stability. It’s a one-way correspondence with her wondering if her son would like it...

In the years since Bong Joon Ho made Oscar history with “Parasite”s best picture victory in 2020, the Korean director’s fanbase continued to grow and evolve around the world. Stephen King’s Cujo is set to be adapted by Netflix, potentially with Darren Aronofsky as the director. The 1981 novel tells a chilling story about a mother and her son surrounded by horror, with their chances of survival growing dim as the plot unfolds. With Aronofsky in discussions with Netflix, this classic tale will soon come to life on screen.

Aronofsky’s knack for crafting psychological thrillers throughout his career and Netflix’s obsession with adapting Stephen King’s work sound like a match made in heaven. For those who have been waiting for a horror tale, Cujo will serve it right into their plates, evoking all sorts of harrowing emotions one might not be prepared for. This will also mark Aronofsky’s first feature on a streaming platform.

In a bit of unexpected news, Darren Aronofsky is headed to the world of Stephen King. Yes, the man behind everything from "Requiem for a Dream" to "Mother!" has been tapped to direct Netflix's upcoming film version of "Cujo," King's 1981 novel that previously inspired a big screen adaptation in 1983. Now, Aronosky will be afforded the chance to put his own stamp on the material.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aronofsky has signed on to direct the adaptation, which is being produced by Roy Lee. There is still no word on who is penning the screenplay, but the filmmaker is expected to be meeting with candidates soon. This is all pretty surprising, as Netflix's "Cujo" was only revealed to be in development very recently. It seems this one won't be languishing in development hell.

Netflix's adaptation of Stephen King's Cujo takes another step forward, with an Oscar-nominated director reportedly a top contender to helm the upcoming film. Released in 1981, King's novel of the same tells the story of a sweet St. Bernard family pet who becomes a violent killing machine after contracting rabies from a bat, trapping a mother and her son inside a broken-down vehicle outside a mechanic's shop. Cujo was adapted into a movie in 1983 from director Lewis Teague, and it was announced last week that another take on the novel is now in the works at Netflix.
THR now reports that Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Cujo for Netflix, with Roy Lee producing. Lee is a King veteran, having produced both It movies, Salem's Lot (2024), and Francis Lawrence's upcoming The Long Walk. There's currently no writer attached to the Cujo adaptation, but Aronofsky will reportedly be...

Over a half a century after its release, Mother India (released in 1957) remains one of the most important international films of all time. The groundbreaking film made it to the Academy Awards and eventually bagged a nomination in the Best International Film category, only to lose the prize to Federico Fellini by just one vote, who took the Golden Statue for Nights of Cabiria. Despite facing defeat at the Oscars, this social epic became one of the greatest international films of all time. But what makes it endure?
The director, Mehboob Khan, made a film deeply embedded in a specific cultural context. The setting of the movie was rooted in rural India, showing the brutal reality faced by the poor of the nation. However, there were a lot of elements in the film that resonated with the audience worldwide. The plight of the working class, the unflinching portrayal of struggle,...

An action-packed adventure with a 90’s backbone awaits viewers in Netflix’s The Electric State starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
The film also features the voice work of Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate and more. Based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, the film watches Michelle (Brown) and Keats (Pratt) venture into the dangerous Exclusion Zone and the heart of artificial intelligence firm Sentre to try and rescue Michelle’s brother. The politics of robots vs. humans fall to the side as each of them has their own robot companion, and they meet more on their adventures to track down Christopher (Woody Norman), who Michelle was told died in a car accident that also took the lives of their parents.
Several 90’s needle drops play in many different scenes from the more sentimental ones to the high-adrenaline ones. Some are performed by a piano-playing Taco robot.

Every anime has at least one shocking cliffhanger that changes the course of its plot, and it isn't a happy cliffhanger for the characters involved. Many cliffhangers feature heartbreaking moments, shocking revelations or stunning events that leave the characters forever changed from then on.
These cliffhangers often mark the turning point for the anime and leave a lasting impact on viewers, since it's the point of no return for the characters. Whether it's a character's death or a torturous event that the main character goes through, these cliffhangers drastically shift the anime's initial tone.

How does a truly terrible song end up an otherwise flawless album? Blame ego-appeasing band-politics concessions, drug-fueled studio experiments, songwriters working through a few too many personal demons, and artists who just ran out of songwriting steam a little too soon. Or maybe it all comes down to bad judgment.
In any case, Rolling Stone‘s Andy Greene recently found 50 examples of classic albums with at least one bad song, and he goes through his entire list with host Brian Hiatt on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now.

Taking place in April, Bong Joon Ho: Power And Paradox will chart the ascendancy of Korea’s most successful filmmaker as the hotly anticipated Mickey 17 (2025) is released in cinemas including BFI IMAX. Korean cinema can be divided into two eras: before and after the emergence of director Bong Joon Ho.
With films that spanned everyday life and the realms of alternative or futuristic worlds, Bong Joon Ho has balanced critical acclaim with commercial heft. His themes explore power through paradox, where control meets chaos, and humour intertwines with horror, laying bare the intricacy of societal systems; with audiences better positioned to identify the structures of power that his characters appear oblivious to.

Exploring grief in the wake of loss is familiar terrain in horror, but writer/director Julia Max‘s feature debut, The Surrender, eschews the conventional approach in favor of visceral occult ritual horror.

Bong Joon-ho is a one of a kind.
He’s only made 8 films in the past 25 years, but each feature is a precious jewel, expertly chiseled and finely shined. There are a handful of thematic and narrative obsessions that he cleverly reworks throughout his films — the injustices associated with Capitalism, the transformative power of trauma, the importance of communication, animal rights – each time revealing new layers and finding new angles. These are beautiful, powerful, funny, wildly entertaining films. They are endlessly rewatchable and always break new ground. His 2019 feature “Parasite” was the first South Korean movie to ever be nominated for an Academy Award; it wound up winning four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best International Feature Film.

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho has fiddled around with dramatic thrillers like Memories of Murder and Mother as well as thoughtful science fiction such as Snowpiercer and The Host. After winning his handful of Oscars a few years back with his crossover drama Parasite, he’s now flipped the switch back to sci-fi with his newest film, the dystopian space opera Mickey 17.
Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a loser who, after getting into trouble on Earth, volunteers to be an “expendable” on an outer space colonization mission. Expendables are part suicide soldiers and part lab rats, as they are basically used to do dangerous tasks and medical tests that might (and probably will) get them killed. The catch is, once they die, their body is just “reprinted” and their memories are implanted in the new shell.

Within Bong Joon Ho, there seems to be two different filmmakers. With his Korean language films, Bong is more restrained, quiet, and methodical, with outstanding films like Memories of Murder, Mother, and his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite. His English-language films, however, are far broader, with goofy, over-the-top characters, and a much wilder approach, whether it’s focusing on a train that has to keep moving around the world in Snowpiercer, or the relationship between a girl and her giant animal friend in Okja. Bong Joon Ho’s films often have similar themes, like class inequality, rebellion, and our relationship with nature, but these two sides handle them in vastly different ways.

Hulu’s latest sleeper hit, Paradise, belongs to the mystery box category of TV shows, a genre that explores the puzzling causality of events in the story, building its exclusive mythos set in a controlled environment—occasionally isolated from the rest of the world. A key motif of the genre, reflected in shows like From, Silo, and Lost too, is the way the makers try to use the background score and soundtrack to enhance the narrative treatment—by creating an enigmatic effect or hinting at what’s to come and motivations of the characters. This is most prominently reflected in David Lynch’s masterpiece, Twin Peaks, both the movies and series, where Angelo Badalamenti composed themes and scores that did justice to Lynch’s surreal vision. The importance of music as a suggestive narrative device is also realized in Paradise, as composer Siddhartha Khosla’s usage of background scores and tracks suggests.

Bill Nighy (“Living”) is among the stars recruited to join Prime Video’s upcoming action-adventure series starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham. That show also now has a title — “Ride or Die” — while Matt Miller (“Lethal Weapon”) has joined as showrunner and Peyton Reed (“Ant-Man”) has been tapped to direct the first two episodes.
Based on an idea by creator Tessa Coates (“Feel Good”), the eight-episode “Ride or Die” stars Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) as Judith, who has secretly been working as a highly trained assassin. That’s a double life that Judith’s best friend Debbie (played by Spencer) knows nothing about — until a hit goes wrong. Now Judith and Debbie are on the run, aiming to stay one step ahead of a mysterious enemy.

Director Bong Joon-ho gained widespread acclaim for his 2019 film Parasite, which became the first non-English-language movie to ever take home the Oscar for Best Picture. The world patiently held its breath to see what he'd do next, and now we have our answer, as Mickey 17 is set to hit theaters next week. Thus far, the sci-fi film has been garnering a lot of praise from critics, and while Joon-ho has dabbled in a lot of genres over the course of his career, he recently shared the hilarious reason why he'll never dip his toes into making musicals.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss all things Mickey 17, it was pointed out to the South Korean director that he's covered a lot of different themes in his movies, which have stretched a wide breadth of genres. When asked if he'd ever want to do a musical,...

What’s with all the maternity angst lately? First came Nightbitch, then If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and now — in keeping with the rule that three makes it a trend — please welcome Mother’s Baby. Led by a fiercely compelling performance from Marie Leuenberger, Johanna Moder’s psychological thriller ticks along with exceptional confidence while it maintains ambiguity as to whether post-partum depression is feeding Julia’s paranoia or there really is something unsettling about her infant son, making her suspect a switcheroo at the private fertility clinic where she gave birth. It’s when the script starts providing answers that things get shaky.
Part of the issue is that the movie often seems to be itching to make a decisive turn into horror but keeps holding back. Moder and co-writer Arne Kohlweyer commit to that shift so late in the action that it all becomes a bit,...

Action sickos and Bong Joon-heads may now rejoice. After “Parasite” gave way to six long years of famine, the Oscar-winner has returned with a feast, serving up a sci-fi spectacle bursting with enough lofty ideas and buffoonish antics to keep even the hungriest fans sated — especially if the Korean auteur goes quiet for another half-decade.
Still, those looking for more of the sublime precision of “Parasite” – or “Mother” or “Memories of Murder,” for that matter – should hope that next project is back on home-turf, for “Mickey 17” only cements the clear divide between the filmmaker’s English- and Korean-language work. In ways both figurative and literal, “Mickey 17” finds Bong Joon-ho bugging out.
That the director adapted a novel originally titled “Mickey 7” should clue you in to the gusto and abundance at play here, while rumors of the studio’s apparent befuddlement become all the more ironic given the film...

In a wide-ranging conversation at the British Film Institute ahead of his new film “Mickey 17,” Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho revealed that Mark Ruffalo’s antagonist character bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain U.S. president who once criticized “Parasite’s” historic Academy Awards sweep.
“We shot this film in London in 2022 and there’s a particular thing that happened in 2024 that was quite similar in this film,” Bong said through an interpreter, referencing how Ruffalo’s character Kenneth Marshall manifests with “faintly orange-tinged skin.” The director added that after recent events, “Mark Ruffalo was also quite surprised to see it play out in reality and wondered, ‘Were we oracles predicting the future?'”
When asked if this was a response to Trump’s disparaging comments about “Parasite’s” Oscar win, Bong quipped that he is “Not that petty,” drawing laughs from the BFI audience.

Matthew McConaughey has cast his fictionalized mother for his upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series with Woody Harrelson. Holland Taylor, best known for playing matriarch Evelyn Harper in Two and a Half Men, has boarded the series as Ma Mac.
Per Deadline, Taylor will appear as a series regular opposite McConaughey and Harrelson in the 10-episode half-hour comedy series. Although McConaughey previously revealed the show's title as Brother from Another Mother in April 2023, Deadline is claiming in its casting report that the series remains untitled at this time. What is known, however, is that the show will star Harrelson and McConaughey as heightened versions of themselves in a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around their strange and beautiful sibling-like bond. Matthew and Woody’s close friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.

Who doesn’t love a good celebrity success story? More so, who would not love the money that comes with it? There is, of course, plenty of money to be made in Hollywood, and celebrities can’t deny that they have the art of raking in cash nailed down to the tee.
While most of us are figuring out whether shelling out for another streaming service is actually worth it, the big peeps of the entertainment industry are, perhaps, much more concerned about how to add another comma to their net worth. Call it Russ Hanneman’s Tres Comas.
Nevertheless, how does one even calculate this? Ranking them by earnings project-based earnings? That seems like a splintering headache in the making and does not fit the variety of celebrities and projects out there. Paydays come in all shapes and sizes, don’t they? Do you then go by the total money made throughout their careers?...

Joy and Jerry Jennings (played by Mindy Cohn and Enrico Colantoni respectively) are, as usual, hosting daughter Jolene (Melanie Leishman) and son Jim (Iain Stewart) for Sunday dinner. Recently, it seems like the four are getting together out of duty rather than anything else and this particular meet up is further strained by the fact that all four of them seem to have something they’d rather not tell anyone. Matters are made much worse by the unexpected arrival of Jerry’s brother Frank (an effectively loathsome Juan Chioran), a dreadful bigot with a nasty surprise for his relatives, a surprise which has them contemplating murder…

Emilia Clarke will forever be known as Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, from Game of Thrones, but the actor has done a great many things in her career since then. She's spent months filming a new crime drama called Criminal, as well as doing voice work for an animated Netflix show called The Twits.
in her personal life, Clarke has been linked with some notable individuals, including dating Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane in the early 2010s. More recently, she's been seen in the company of DJ Sebastian 'Bassi' Fox. But according to The Sun, Clarke and Fox have now broken up after four months together.
This information comes from "a source" at The Sun: “Emilia and Seb aren’t together anymore," this person said. "They had a fun time, but something just wasn’t quite right between them. They gave it a good go but, in the end.

One of the biggest criticisms lobbed at The Walt Disney Company is that they "don't make them like they used to." In an era of sequels and remakes like Mufasa: The Lion King (2024), it feels like Disney is relying too much on its nostalgia factor than something original.
Although Disney has tried (and often failed) at trying to recreate the success of the past, that doesn't mean an audience for its material doesn't still exist. The older films worked for a reason, the trouble seems to be finding out what the magic formula was.
Know your viewers
There's no denying that Disney's remakes and sequels take in a lot at the box office, but the nostalgia will only last for so long. Disney's last original IP, Wish (2023) tried to capitalize on these "classic" elements but only went part of the way, resulting in a lackluster performance.

How Did Jennifer Lawrence Feel About Mother! While Dating Director Darren Aronofsky? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Jennifer Lawrence, known for her breakout role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and her Oscar-winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook, once confessed to being baffled by the plot of one of her own movies, Mother!, despite dating its director during filming.
The Confusing Fever Dream Of The Movie
The film in question, Mother!, was released in 2017 and directed by Darren Aronofsky, who is known for his work on Black Swan. The psychological thriller, rich in symbolism and allegory, left audiences scratching their heads—and apparently, Lawrence too.
The story follows a poet and his wife, whose peaceful life spirals into chaos when uninvited guests invade their secluded home. While the movie delves into themes like creation, destruction, and Biblical allegory, even its leading lady found its meaning elusive.

Jennifer Lawrence, the Hollywood darling known for her sharp wit and candid interviews, once found herself in a uniquely challenging situation: attempting to “understand” her role in Darren Aronofsky’s enigmatic 2017 film, “Mother!” while simultaneously navigating a romantic relationship with the director himself.
The film, a surreal and disturbing descent into madness, proved to be a divisive experience for audiences. Critics and viewers alike grappled with its symbolism, leaving many bewildered by its abstract narrative. Lawrence, however, faced a unique predicament.
As she confessed in a candid interview with Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live,” she found herself navigating the intricate web of “Mother!” while simultaneously attempting to maintain a healthy relationship with its creator.
