There may not be a better time for a proper adaptation of Discworld. After all, fantasy television just keeps getting more popular, and with increasingly massive budgets going into these shows, we've reached a point of spectacle that would have been unthinkable just 30 years ago when Xena: Warrior Princess was as good as genre TV could ever hope to be. Yet with that increase in budget and quality of special effects, there has come a commensurate change in the tone of these shows as they become more and more grim.
Despite Discworld's complicated reading order, it could be the ideal choice for a shift in direction when it comes to the fantasy genre. The books' focus on themes of truth, justice, freedom, and love, have the potential to help make Disworld into a welcome entry into yet another fun, fantasy world.

There have been all kinds of Discworld adaptations over the years, from the animated movies by Cosgrove Hall in the 1990s to the various live-action TV movies and series, yet none of them have been amazing successes. The most recent attempt, the BBC's controversial adaptation of the Night Watch novels, was critically panned for taking too many arbitrary liberties with the setting. Other adaptations have had their own high points and flaws.
There is one thread that explains why none of these adaptations have achieved any lasting success: none of them have quite landed on the tone that makes the original novels so timelessly endearing, even if the Discworld reading order is a little complicated. Emulating Terry Pratchett's unique mix of satire, slapstick, and parable requires an emotional intelligence that even the best adaptations have lacked.

Now that the Caped Crusader of Gotham City has a new face, everyone’s wondering who will get the opportunity to portray his trusted butler. Some are speculating that a legend like Pierce Brosnan will take on the role, while we’ve also heard reports that Warner Bros. is considering lesser-known talents like Jared Harris. But now we have one more name to add to the list, as our sources – the same ones who revealed that Pattinson was locked in as the Dark Knight before any other outlet confirmed it – say that there’s another name fans should be watching out for to potentially play Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman: Charles Dance.

Vertical Entertainment has released the first trailer, poster and photo for 10x10, a new thriller slated to arrive in theaters and on VOD formats April 13. While Luke Evans often plays both heroic and villainous characters alike, his Lewis character in this thriller is quite methodical, plotting his revenge for months, waiting for just the right time to strike, abducting Cathy and holding her against her will in a 10x10 soundproof room, with no way out. As you can see below, there is much more than meets the eye to both the abductor and abductee.
Lewis (Luke Evans) is an outwardly ordinary guy, but in reality he is hiding an obsession, revenge, against Cathy (Kelly Reilly). Just a few days from opening her new business, Cathy's fresh start is interrupted when she is attacked, kidnapped and locked in a room. She assumes the kidnapper wants her body or her life, but he is after something simpler.

Best-selling author Sir Terry Pratchett passed away on Thursday, March 12, and the final tweets from his Twitter account were a fitting and poignant way to announce his passing. Even though I knew it was coming, given Terry’s long struggle with Alzheimer’s and attendant health issues, it broke my heart a little bit more to hear that it really was the end.
I was fortunate to know Terry for almost ten years, beginning with my work on The North American Discworld Conventions after meeting Terry at a book signing in 2005 Along with being a great light in this world and one of my all-time favorite authors, he was also my longtime friend; and it’s hard to know how to sum up my feelings in the wake of his passing.

Terry Pratchett: “It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.”
The much-loved author Terry Prachett, whose books The Hogfather, The Colour Of Magic and Going Postal became popular TV movies, has passed away at the age of 66 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
"Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night," his official Twitter account declared.
Pratchett's publisher, Larry Finlay, said in a statement "I was deeply saddened to learn that Sir Terry Pratchett has died. The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds.
"In over 70 books, Terry enriched the planet like few before him. As all who read him know, Discworld was his vehicle to satirize this world: he did so brilliantly, with great skill, enormous humour and constant invention.

With his brilliant leading role in HBO’s Entourage now behind him after the show ended with its eighth and final season last year, it looks like Jeremy Piven might be crossing the Atlantic to come to the UK for his next part.
ITV are in negotiations with Piven to take the lead in Mr. Selfridge, a ten-part series that will chronicle the life of the eponymous Harry Gordon Selfridge, the retail magnate who founded Selfridges, one of the leading UK department stores, second only to Harrods.
The historical mini-series will be based on Lindy Woodhead’s original book, Shopping, Seduction, and Mr. Selfridge, and Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’ Diary) has adapted the script for Jon Jones (Going Postal) to direct, with Davies and Jones having worked together already for ITV adapting Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey.

There have been several live-action translations of Terry Pratchett's Discworld stories so far, and they've really been quite good, but none of them have really captured the essence of the affair like Going Postal. They have largely served as a very good time for those who are already massive fans, but the relation of the splendor has been largely left to the fact that you already read the book in question, and you bring the lion's share of the brilliance with you.
That's still true to some extent here, but it's a much different game. Much of the credit goes to a different style of screenplay translation, focusing more on how to deliver through the medium, as opposed to just making sure the key lines show up. Moreover, the acting, while solid enough in other efforts, including a good turn by Sean Astin, is at a much better level here.

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...

Sign of the times? Jared Lee Loughner’s mug shot, photographed after his rampage in Tuscon. Saturday’s shooting in Tucson, Arizona, has been variously described as an “assassination” and a “shooting rampage”—but which one is it? This may seem like a semantic quibble, but what occurred in that Safeway supermarket appears to be an entirely new type of American murder: a hybrid of political assassination, of the sort that plagued America in the 1960s and 70s, and a “going postal” rampage massacre, of the kind that first appeared in the mid- to late-1980s, with the rise of Reaganomics inequalities and the deterioration of workplace culture. I studied countless rampage massacres for my book Going Postal, and this is the first instance I can think of in which the shooter—in this case, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner—carried out anything like a hybrid assassination-rampage: first, a planned, targeted...

Charles Dance, of Alien3, Bleak House and Gosford Park fame, not to mention his recent appearance as Havelock Vetenari on Pratchett adaptation Going Postal, is set to return to the Sky fold with Neverland. For those not in the know, it's a two-part mini-series-cum-film that tells the story of Dr. Richard Fludd, a 400-year-old former alchemist to Queen Elizabeth who discovers 'the bridge' to Neverland. As made for television movies go, it's pretty exciting, and not only because we'll get to go back to Neverland, but also because it boasts a cast that includes Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel and Bob Hoskins.Sadly, Mr. Hoskins won't be busting out a natty green Pan outfit but one thing we are sure of is that it will involve pirates. And cities formed out of trees. And pickpockets. Neverland is shooting now and is set to air sometime in 2011.

The Company developing a remake of Blake's 7 says it is confident of finding a new partner after Sky1 cancelled its plans to revive the show.
The cult sci-fi series, which was the brainchild of Doctor Who's Daleks creator Terry Nation, originally ran on BBC1 between 1978 and 1981 and followed a gang of rebels fighting a totalitarian Terran Federation which ruled the galaxy.
Sky bought the rights from the BBC and in 2008 announced plans to bring the show back to the small screen.
It was described as being "modern and bold" and test footage was reportedly filmed.
But a Sky1 spokesman now says: "Following the development process we have decided not to produce Blake's 7. However, Sky continues to invest heavily in original drama and it remains at the heart of our plans."
B7 productions, the company developing the remake, said: "Sky deciding to not proceed with the planned TV revival of...

Sky1's latest Terry Pratchett adaptation was the most-watched multichannel programme on Sunday night, early viewing figures indicate. Going Postal, starring David Suchet, pulled in 879k (5%) for its first instalment between 6pm and 8pm, ahead of BBC Two and Five's offerings. It's the channel's third series of Pratchett adaptations, following Hogfather and Colour of Magic. On the main networks, Lewis's final story of the year logged 6.08m (27.6%) for ITV1 from 8pm. Despite suffering a steady decline in numbers over its four-week run, series four has averaged an impressive 6.69m (28.1%), marginally superior to last year's 6.34m (26.2%). BBC One's offerings of Countryfile and The Big Personality Test could only manage 3.65m (16.8%) and 2.74m (12.3%) at 8pm and 9pm. Prior to that however, Halcyon (more)...

London -- "Grey's Anatomy" star Sandra Oh will head the cast in Sky 1's fall police thriller "thorne: scaredy cat," alongside David Morrissey, Eddie Marsan and Aidan Gillen. The project will premiere on Sky and then seek international theatrical release.
Oh will play Detective Sergeant Sandra Chen, part of a London cop squad investigating a grisly series of murders that take place around London's St Pancras station.
The three-part drama is a sequel to "thorne: sleepyhead," which also starred Natascha McElhone. Both will premiere on Sky 1 HD in the fall and will then be released as two separate movies, to be distributed by ContentFilm.
Based on the award-winning crime novels of Mark Billingham, the series sees Morrissey play Detective Inspector Tom Thorne.
Both films are produced by Jolyon Symonds for Stagereel, the indie producer he jointly set up with Paul and Morrissey. It is a co-production with Canadian producer Cite-Amerique.

London -- "Life on Mars" stars Philip Glenister and John Simm are to reunite in a new Sky1 HD thriller "Mad Dogs," about a group of friends who get caught up in a murderous adventure.
Produced by the same indie behind the Kenneth Branagh detective drama "Wallander," Left Bank Pictures, and scripted by Cris Cole, the 4x60 drama is slated for broadcast next spring.
Glenister and Simm will star alongside Max Beasley and Marc Warren as four forty-somethings who become embroiled in a violent murder when they travel to a friend's retirement party on the Spanish island of Majorca.
The 4x60 drama will begin filming in Majorca later this month and will air in spring 2010. The darkly comic production is yet another big-budget glossy British produced commission from Sky 1, which has ramped up its original drama slate over the last eighteen months while other broadcasters are still feeling the pinch.

Here's what you've got to look forward to in May, in terms of movies, TV shows, DVD releases and games...
Last month, we trialled putting together an article at the start of the month to let you know what was coming up in the weeks ahead. We asked you if you wanted us to do it again. You said yes. Thus, the following article is clearly all your fault...!
Films
Lots to watch out for in May. Iron Man 2 is already tearing up the box office in the UK, with its Us roll-out coming on May 7th. Conversely, we get the terrible remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street on the 7th, which the Us got last week.
A much better bet, and arguably the film to beat this month, is Chris Morris' terrific Four Lions. We've got a review of that here to explain more about it...

A two-part telemovie heading to our screens in May, here's the trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal...
Following on from the excellent TV adaptations of Terry Pratchett's Hogfather and The Colour Of Magic, another hugely popular Discworld novel is soon to be aired on Sky 1. Screening at the end of May, the next adaptation will be based upon Sir Pratchett's 33rd book in the Discworld series, Going Postal.
Starring Richard Coyle, (whom we're especially pleased to see return to telly in a big way in this production, as he was this writer's personal favourite nominee for Doctor Who back when we were all guessing and fancying actors' chances) the story revolves around Moist Von Lipwig (Coyle), a con artist set to hang for his crimes in the Discworld city-state of Ankh-Morpork. Saved from his grizzly fate, he's recruited to manage the now decrepit Ankh-Morpork postal service.
