Warner Bros. continues to surprise no one by making release date moves in its schedule, following the announcements earlier today that Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 have been delayed from their original release dates. Following on the Tenet and Wonder Woman news is the latest on The Matrix 4, which was in production in Germany before the production halt caused by the global health crisis. As a result, Warner has moved the title from May 21, 2021 to April 1, 2022, grabbing nearly a year to finish the pic.
This move of the untitled fourth Matrix film nearly a full year back on the calendar, to the spring of 2022, is the latest in a rapid-fire list of changes that Warner Bros. released this afternoon. Anne Hathaway's The Witches remake was also completely removed from the release schedule. Yanking Witches entirely is a bit of a strange move, since it was destined to appear this October and,...

Hollywood was watching and waiting for the dominoes to start to fall. With Christopher Nolan poised to be the saviour of the summer box office, Warner Bros. held onto the original “Tenet” release date of July 17 as long as it could. Until it couldn’t.
And theater chains around the country were trying to ramp up to open in time with costly new safety protocols in place. While some 350 drive-ins have been pulling customers, reopened indoor cinemas haven’t been doing so well. As studios and theaters alike tracked the rise of Covid cases this week, Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich had little wriggle room left after leaving the date off. He had to make the decision, knowing that many theaters in key markets like Los Angeles and New York might not be back in time. Costly marketing pushes had to get started.

Warner Bros. is halting the 2021 release of the highly-anticipated fourth “The Matrix” film, pushing it to Spring 2022.
The move comes as Hollywood studios have been forced to shift their release schedules after theaters shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Lana Wachowski is set to direct the film, and she will also produce the film along with Grant Hill. Wachowski is writing the screenplay for “The Matrix” sequel with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute globally.
Details are being kept under wraps, but the still-untitled sequel would continue from the original “Matrix” trilogy. The film was initially supposed to hit theaters in May 2021.

Godzilla Vs Kong has locked down its composer. Junkie Xl, aka Tom Holkenborg, is set to score the soundtrack to the upcoming monster movie showdown. This serves as the latest entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise, which kicked off with 2014's Godzilla. This time, we will be seeing two kings squaring off in an assuredly epic cinematic battle for the ages. Junkie Xl has an important role to play in the madness.
According to a new report, Junkie Xl has signed on to provide the score for Godzilla vs. Kong. The report states that he has already been working on the music, which makes sense considering that the movie was originally supposed to hit theaters in March. Tom Holkenborg has become one of the industry's go-to guys in recent years. Some of his credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League,...

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 10
In the What We Do in the Shadows season 2 finale, “Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires,” all the world’s a stage and the players merely vampires. It is a bittersweet ending to a strangely eventful and celebratory season, because parting is such sweet, though often salty, sorrow.
The first parting comes very early. Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) opens the episode in his coffin, a foreboding sign the episode will be a special event. The ancient vampire has to do it without any help because he wakes to find he was abandoned by his loyal familiar. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) leaves with just a one-word note, “sorry.” But who cares, the Staten Island vampires are going to Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires, or Vampire Theater, as Colin Robinson puts it, g-damn it.

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 is here! Bust out the creepy crepe paper!
In case you’ve been stuck in your coffin for the last hundred years or so, What We Do in the Shadows is a documentary-style look into the daily lives of four vampires who’ve “lived” together for hundreds of years. In Staten Island. The series is based on the feature film What We Do in the Shadows from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. And it’s just as good as the source material.
“Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi and Paul Simms have more than delivered on the high expectations of Shadows fans by adapting the cult classic for television and building a passionate base of new and returning fans,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions in a statement back when the show was first renewed last year. “We...

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2 Episode 9
The vampires of Staten Island encounter another ancient enemy as the season continues to round up all the most unusual suspects, this time they come with a special allure. What We Do in the Shadows season 2, episode 9, “Witches,” features dark magical women who have a checkered history with the bloodsucking creatures of the night.
These aren’t the proud Wiccan traditionalists New Yorkers might find selling talismans and Ouanga Bags at Enchantments or Catlands, except they also happen to run a store called Satchel Serafina. These women were there when many of the ancient books were written. Most TV series, and encyclopedias, would call them hags, but Nandor says they’re MILFs and coven is a magnetic bunch who defy the rules of aerodynamics and circumvent the laws of senescence, which is the scientific term for aging.

Katie Crutchfield has always had a knack for noting subtle shifts in the weather. “I watch you anxiously/You paint it celestial, you paint it serene,” she sang over thrashing guitars on “Poison,” from 2015’s Ivy Tripp, making serenity sound like a death knell. On her latest album Saint Cloud, the 31-year-old songwriter trades in the indie-rock neurosis of her previous work for a mellower, twangy sound that nods towards her roots in Birmingham, Alabama. But her piercing observations have only grown sharper with time: “I have a gift, I’ve been told,...

Curtis Hanson--Confidentially
By

Curtis Hanson was my first interview with a fellow film buff and film journalist. He was nice enough to sit down with me twice, first at the Rose Cafe in Venice, then at a lunch spot in the Marina, the name of which has been lost to time. He was then kind enough to invite me to the world premiere of "L.A. Confidential" at the Chinese Theater as his guest, my first time on the red carpet at a real-life Hollywood premiere, and called me after this piece ran to thank me personally. A nice man. Hanson, and co-writer Brian Helgeland, would go on to win Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for "L.A. Confidential."
Years later, I ran into Hanson at a book signing party for Pat York that was held in Westwood. I approached him and reminded him of our interview a decade or so earlier.

March’s home entertainment releases are ending on a quiet note, as we’ve only six titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Scream Factory has their Cherry Falls and Murders in the Rue Morgue / The Dunwich Horror double feature Blus for you guys to look forward to, and Vinegar Syndrome is keeping quite busy themselves with three different releases: Frightmare, Pigs, and their Revenge of the Virgins / Teenage Zombies double feature. Last but certainly not least, the Christopher Lee cult classic The City of the Dead is also getting the HD treatment on March 29th as well.

Over at my other haunt, Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, there is currently posted, in honor of Halloween week, what I think are two very special treats (and possibly tricks). The first is a very challenging frame grab quiz in which readers are asked to guess the titles of 31 movies based on eerie images that may or may not be so easy to identify. The other is a special edition of the traditional interview-type quiz I occasionally come up devoted entirely to the harrowing world of horror. It features the usual batch of questions for which there are no wrong answers, only your answers, which makes it much more fun to fill out and especially to read. As usual, it’s taking me a while to get around to submitting my own answers to the quiz, but in the creeping shadow of the approaching holiday I thought I...

This year’s Blood List has named the 13 best genre scripts around town, and in its sixth year the annual screenplay contest is expanding its scope to include hot books, TV pilots, and young scribes ripe for signing. Taking top honors in 2014 is sci-fi thriller Bird Box from The Thing and Final Destination 5 scribe Eric Heisserer, an apocalyptic tale of a woman trying to lead her children to safety – all three blindfolded – after monsters descend on earth that turn people insane on sight. Universal set Heisserer to adapt the manuscript from Josh Malerman in 2013 for Mama helmer Andy Muschietti. Previous Blood List alumni include Black Swan, Stoker, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming Blumhouse thriller The Boy Next Door.
Like the Black List naming the top unproduced screenplays circulating around Hollywood, the genre-focused Blood List taps exec votes to determine each year’s best unmade horror, sci-fi, and thriller scripts.

While the makers of cheesy shark movies keep trying to come up with the next big thing, writer-director Leigh Scott is thinking smaller with his new horror-comedy Piranha Sharks. We’re gonna need a bigger aquarium!
Forget about that Sharknado soon to strike New York City, great white sharks the size of piranhas are swarming the Big Apple in this tongue-in-jaws nature gone amok flick from Leigh Scott (The Penny Dreadful Picture Show, Dorothy & the Witches of Oz).
Josh Hammond, John Wells, Noel Thurman, and Jessica Sonneborn are amongst those forced to contend with the man-eating, mutant, pint-sized apex predators that get loose in the plumbing of New York City.
Synopsis:
Great white sharks bio-engineered to be the size of piranhas with the purpose of living in rich people's exotic aquariums terrorize New York City when they get into the water supply and do what great white sharks do best.

The 2nd annual South Texas Underground Film Festival, running Oct. 3-6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a massive celebration of international alternative cinema, including plenty from Texas filmmakers, of course.
The fest opened on the 3rd with the drop-dead hilarious comedy Pictures of Superheroes by Austin filmmaker Don Swaynos.
But, there’s still plenty more to see throughout the jam-packed weekend wherein films screen from morning until, well, early into the next morning.
The film that’s absolutely not to be missed is the screening on the 6th at 10:30 a.m. of Savage Witches, the amazing celebration of the art of filmmaking by British directors Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais. A colorful spectacle of multiple filmmaking styles, Savage Witches is a real joy to experience.

Protagonists must battle the forces of evil while trying to keep the world (and often their lovers) safe from destruction. Maryelizabeth Hart of Mysterious Galaxy leads a discussion with Comic-Con special guest Christine Feehan (The Dark Series), Claudia Gray (Spellcaster), Aprilynne Pike (Earthbound), Lauren Kate (The Fallen Novels), Kendare Blake (Antigoddess), and Magnus Flyte (City of Dark Magic).

Hey you. Sitting there at your monitor. Have a pair of 3D glasses lying around? Come on, you know you do. 3D is everywhere. Go get 'em, we'll wait. Is this what they call breaking the fourth wall?
The official Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation website has opened its doors and is now home to some nifty footage in both 2D and, if you have the tech, 3D (tech being a pair of paper glasses with red and blue lenses; red goes over your Left eye). Check it out!
In addition to that, UK distributor 101 Films has announced a 3D Blu-ray release date of August 20, 2012. The UK release will feature extensive DVD bonus features including the world’s first behind-the-scenes featurette filmed in 3D. North American release plans from Screen Media Films are coming soon.

A new Facebook page has launched for Jeff Broadstreet's Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation that's home to lots of eye candy both from the flick and behind-the-scenes. Some are even in 3D if you have some glasses handy! Dig it!
Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation stars Andrew Divoff and Jeffrey Combs. A prequel, the story begins one full day before the zombie outbreak occurs in the 2006 film. Also starring are Sarah Lieving (The Dunwich Horror), Robin Sydney (The Lost) and Denice Duff (Subspecies) as “Sister Sara”, a Sarah Palin-esque figure who unwittingly walks into the zombie outbreak and meets a fitting end. If only this were the real world! We don't think Palin could ever handle herself in a "squirmish" with the dead.

It’s been awhile since there’s been any news regarding Leigh Scott’s Dorothy and the Witches of Oz (formerly just Witches of Oz), but now comes word that the dark fantasy featuring the likes of Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Mia Sara, Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, and Christopher Lloyd as “The Wizard of Oz” is getting a limited Us theatrical release this February.
Dorothy and the Witches of Oz follows the exploits of the grown Dorothy Gale (Paulie Rojas), now a successful children's book author, as she moves from Kansas to present day New York City. Dorothy quickly learns that her popular books are based on repressed childhood memories, and that the wonders of Oz are very, very real. When the Wicked Witch of the West shows up in Times Square, Dorothy must find the inner courage to stop her.

Actor Edward Furlong may have missed a few steps over the last couple of years, but when this cat is on his game, he's really on his game. That's why we're rooting for him to get his shit together and are hoping that his next film, Stitch, is the first step of many in the right direction for him.
Furlong is set to topline the Ajai Mathai film from Thunderbolt Entertainment along with Shirly Brener (The Dunwich Horror).
Look for more on the flick penned by Maurice Billington really soon.
Synopsis
Four friends travel to a seemingly odd location on a retreat in order to mend the loss of a child of one of the couples. During their stay, their reality is shattered when their subconscious enters and supernatural elements change their perceptions. Together with an ongoing eclipse and another dimension where horror occurs, they come to realize that life...

No, Jaws of the Mississippi is not the title of a recently discovered Mark Twain manuscript that pits Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Fin in a life-or-death battle with a Great White shark ("We're gonna need a bigger raft!"). It is, however, the title of a new killer shark movie involving a radioactive Great White prowling the freshwaters of the Mississippi River.
Yes, a radioactive shark, but not of the glowing atomic age monster variety, in case you're expecting something truly outlandish. I'll let the Active Entertainment plot synopsis explain the premise:
"A massive hurricane devastates the Gulf of Mexico, with it a Us government’s top-secret anti-bioterrorism facility. When one of its highly radioactive chemicals spills into the ocean, it triggers mutations in a great white shark, enabling its adaptation to survive in freshwater. As this shark wreaks havoc on local Mississippi River towns, it poses the additional risk of...

Got an email the other day from filmmaker Leigh Scott regarding several upcoming productions from Bullet Films, a subdivision of Blackthorne Industries, the production company he and other ex-Asylum employees formed after escaping The Asylum late last year. The title that immediately popped out to me was Wolvesbayne, a sort of werewolf Hellboy that has just begun filming.
Described as a superhero-type origin film set in a horror film universe, Jeremy London ("Party of Five", Basilisk: The Serpent King) stars as the heroic werewolf who will have to save the world from a Nazi vampire cult leader played by a sword-wielding Marc Dacascos (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Drive) and his vampish cohort, Yancy Butler ("Witchblade", Hard Target). Rounding out the cast are Christy Carlson Romano (the voice of TV's "Kim Possible") as - I'm assuming - the hero's love interest and underrated former Asylum movie regular Rhett Giles as the one and only Van Helsing.
