What do you think of when The Black List is mentioned? In the scope of television and movies, the first feature that comes to mind is probably James Spader’s long-running NBC series from 2013. To documentarians and the like, it’s probably The Black List film interview series that aired on HBO years ago. Unbeknownst to many, that same term is connected to something extremely important in Hollywood as well. A panned neo-noir crime thriller headlined by Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe sets its sights on free streaming. Released back in 2013, Broken City finds Wahlberg taking the lead as a former cop-turned-private investigator, who finds himself in serious danger after being tasked with investigating the wife of Crowe’s mayor of New York City.

HBO announced today that Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler have officially joined the cast of the upcoming DC series Lanterns. Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart and Kyle Chandler has been cast as Hal Jordan.

The anticipated series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Lanterns is an HBO series in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King will co-write the series based on the DC comic Green Lantern.

James Hawes directs the first two episodes. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, King, and Hawes.

Aaron Pierre currently stars as the lead in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, which debuted on Netflix on September 6th and was the #1 title worldwide on the streaming service for three weeks in a row.

Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, has announced its list of August titles. The Tubi August 2024 slate features new Tubi Originals and numerous action, art house, Black cinema, comedy, documentary, drama, horror, kids and family, romance, sci-fi and fantasy, thriller, and Western titles.

In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

The uneven plotting of Marvel's Secret Invasion appears to be matched by its behind-the-scenes production troubles.

A new The Hollywood Reporter exposé revealed multiple firings and studio tensions that ensued during the making of Secret Invasion's scripts and even its filming stages. Originally, writer Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot) was tasked with writing the series, only for Marvel Studios to fire him a year later after it "decided on a different direction," with Broken City writer Brian Tucker replacing Bradstreet on screenwriting duties. Pre-production eventually continued but, by mid-2022, production dynamics had worsened to the point that, according to one insider source, "It was weeks of people not getting along, and it erupted."

Multimedia Music has closed a deal to acquire the music publishing rights from the film music library of Millennium Media, which includes titles such as “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” “London Has Fallen,” “Angel Has Fallen,” “Hitman Wife’s Bodyguard,” “Hellboy,” “The Outpost,” “Mechanic: Resurrection,” “Rambo: Last Blood,” “Blackbird,” “Acts of Vengeance” and “The Expendables 4.”

The deal follows Multimedia Music’s recent music partnership with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, and its acquisition of STX Entertainment’s music library.

The Millennium Media library includes music from leading composers including Brian Tyler, Atli Orvarsson, Mark Isham, Trevor Morris, David Buckley and Benjamin Wallfisch.

Multimedia Music will co-publish the catalog with current co-owner and administrator Kobalt Music.

Tupac Shakur was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on Wednesday.

Shakur is remembered as an iconic American rapper. He was just 25 years old when he was shot at a red light while driving in Las Vegas. He spent six days in the hospital before he succumbed to his injuries. It is still unknown who murdered him.

Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa ‘Set’ Shakur, accepted the star on behalf of her brother at the ceremony. Other guests will be there to honor the rapper, including Big Boy, a radio personality on iHeart Radio, Jamal Joseph and Allen Hughes.

Hughes has directed the movies Menace II Society, The Book of Eli, Broken City, Dead Presidents, From Hell, American Pimp and many more. He directed the movie Tupac: Resurrection in 2003, which was about the life of Shakur.

Joseph is an author and director who currently works at Columbia University.

Playing Father Gabriele Amorth, the real Chief Exorcist for the Vatican from 1986 until his death in 2016, Crowe is an amalgamation of Van Helsing and Dirty Harry, a burly priest who brings plenty of badass gravitas even as the movie becomes increasingly hard to take seriously. Taken from Father Amorth's memoirs, which chronicle thousands of exorcisms he performed while holding the venerated post, it struggles to balance the authentic with the fantastic, eventually collapsing under the weight of the attempt.

It's one of many movies Crowe has made recently that have been commercially and critically panned, inspiring fans to wonder what compels the actor, known for his magnetic screen presence, to make such questionable choices at this stage of his career.

Exclusive: Productivity Media (Pmi) and Wind Sun Sky Entertainment (Wss) have hired producer Navid McIlhargey as Head of Content for both companies.

McIlhargey, who previously worked at companies including New Regency and Silver Pictures, will be responsible for building a slate of live-action and animated film and TV projects and overseeing the respective content teams.

The hire comes on the heels of Pmi’s investment and first look distribution deal with Wss for film and TV.

Mcllhargey was an executive at Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios and later moved to Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures where he was an executive producer on Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla. He later became EVP at New Regency, overseeing The Darkest Hour starring Emile Hirsch and Joel Kinneman, as well as Broken City, starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe.

In 2015, he started his own consulting and production shingle, Vandal Entertainment, working on The Hunter’s Prayer.

Multimedia Music today announced it has closed a deal to acquire master and publishing rights to a 48-title film score catalog from Atlantic Screen Music in what it calls a “mid-seven figure transaction.”

Atlantic Screen Music includes rights to scores including “2 Guns,” “Lone Survivor,” “The Host,” “Dredd,” “Escape Plan” and “Broken City.” Multimedia said that, cumulatively, the films have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box office and even more through ancillary channels.

Todd McFarlane's long-gestating Spawn movie is reportedly back on track with a new screenwriter, but even if it's a reboot ignoring the previous adaptation, there'd be no better person to star in the lead role than Michael Jai White. In the original Spawn, which was released in 1997, White starred as Al Simmons, the man who dies and comes back to Earth as the titular vigilante Hellspawn. There were early plans for a sequel following Spawn's release, but the project died in development hell.

Emmy winner Kyle Chandler is the latest addition to the cast of Super Pumped, a new anthology series with the first season based on Mike Isaac's bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.

Chandler will star as Bill Gurley, the plainspoken, brilliant Texan venture capitalist who bets his sterling reputation on Uber's success - and then has to live with the consequences.

Today, Conor and I return to The City on a Hill to discuss the career of Mark Wahlberg. The B-Sides include: Contraband, Broken City, The Gambler, and All the Money in the World.

Among the many Wahlberg-related topics that come up, one of the biggest is his continued, consistent success as a movie star. Contrary to what I wrote the Broken City review seven years back, Mark Wahlberg is anything but a “second-tier movie star.” If anything, he’s a more successful version of Bruce Willis when analyzing the box-office receipts.

Additional issues include the two kinds of Mark Wahlberg (tough guy with a heart of gold or high-pitched intellectual), and what the latter kind can get you.

Mark Wahlberg may be an Academy Award nominated actor and producer, former rapper, underrated comedian, restaurateur and regularly finds himself named as one of the highest-paid talents in Hollywood, but over the last two decades you’re a whole lot more likely to see him starring in a run of the mill action thriller than a prestige drama, comedy or family film.

The 49 year-old has built a decent career out of headlining mid-budget genre movies that do solid if unspectacular business at the box office and are the subjects of middling but hardly scathing reviews. If you were looking for one of Wahlberg’s efforts that saw him playing a character with a military or law enforcement background that wields a gun on the poster, there are hardly a shortage of options to choose from.

It's come to light that the studio has tapped Albert Hughes (Alpha) to bring this cat and mouse tale to life for modern audiences. Remakes and reboots have become all the rage in recent years as studios struggle to stay relevant in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable marketplace, and this is just the latest classic to get swept up in the craze.

Warner Bros. is bringing back The Fugitive film franchise, having tapped a director in Albert Hughes.

The Fugitive is getting a remake movie, in which we’ll undoubtedly be reminded of the notion that the embattled Dr. Richard Kimble didn’t kill his wife – even if an obstinate U.S. Marshal doesn’t care.

Warner Bros. has appointed Albert Hughes to direct a new big screen adaptation of The Fugitive, reports Deadline. The movie will manifest as a remake of director Andrew Davis’s 1993 Harrison Ford-headlined film, which, itself, was a reboot of ABC’s 1963-1967 television series. Hughes will work off a script by Brian Tucker, who wrote the script to the director’s Mark Wahlberg/Russell Crowe 2013 crime drama, Broken City, and will also be joined by producer Erik Feig.

Exclusive: Warner Bros has just set Albert Hughes to direct a reboot of The Fugitive. Brian Tucker (Broken City) is writing the script, and Erik Feig will produce the film.

The studio intends on putting a new spin on the Andrew Davis-directed 1993 action classic, an exhilarating action film based on the 1963 TV series that starred David Janssen as Kimble and Barry Morse as Gerard. The film earned seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture, with Tommy Lee Jones winning for Best Supporting Actor for playing the dogged U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard, who chased Harrison Ford’s Dr. Richard Kimble. The doc was accused of murdering his wife and was hellbent on finding the one-armed man who actually did it and with whom Kimble struggled after the killing.

The studio isn’t the only Fugitive remake in town, as Quibi has Kiefer Sutherland playing the hunter and Boyd Holbrook playing...

Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of MoviePass, has acquired the exclusive option to buy Emmett Furla Oasis Films, the producers of “Lone Survivor” and “End of Watch,” Variety has learned.

If completed, the deal will enable the company to buy the entire film library and current production slate of Efo Films. Helios and Matheson plans to use the library and the filmmaking expertise of Efo Films to launch its own production company, MoviePass Films. Randall Emmett and George Furla will serve as co-ceo’s of the new venture.

The deal comes as MoviePass, best known for allowing customers to see a movie a day for less than $10 a month, is facing questions about its long-term future and current capitalization. Last week, Helios and Matheson’s stock fell to 40 cents-a-share, its lowest closing price, amid investor alarm about a cash shortage. In October, Helios and Matheson’s stock had been trading at $38.86 a share.

Matt Reeves has been deep into the development of The Batman for Warner Bros. and after a fan recently asked how it was coming along, the director offered a brief but enthusiastic response.

The Batman director Matt Reeves has offered an update on his development of the film. In the past, he talked about all the comic book research he was doing for the film and he said that he wanted to focus on the detective aspect of the character. We also know that the filmmaker was looking to plan a trilogy, but he said that he has to start with one first. Now it seems he has locked in the story he wants to tell and he is currently in the process of outlining it.

While a guest on Jeff Goldsmith's podcast The Q&A, Reeves said, "I am outlining, I have the story worked out and I am outlining."

Despite thinking the Wonder Woman/Tasmanian Devil mashup was alright, the wealth of DC’s recently released Looney Tunes crossovers just haven’t managed to capture my interest. But, when you throw in the Dark Knight, I’ll give just about any absurd idea a read. Thus, I’ll be investing some time in Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 when it comes across my desk.

Some of the more stone-faced of you out there may ask how I could bring myself to do such a thing (the more light-hearted among you may very well be all in), but you, too, may give it a chance upon reading that “after a chance meeting with billionaire Bruce Wayne, Elmer Fudd’s obsession quickly escalates into stalking Batman through the dark alleys and high-class social settings of Gotham City. Welcome to Bat Season!” Yes, that all came from the official synopsis, showing us that we may end up seeing a darker side to Elmer.

Actually, if you’ve managed to browse through the gallery at the top, you’d see that writer Tom King and artist Lee Weeks somehow managed to make this look about as hard-boiled as something by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, and as noir-ish as the legendary works of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Sure, we may not end up putting this in the same class as either Broken City or The Long Halloween, but you have to admit that it’s showing promise.

Also included will be a backup story more visually in line with classic Looney Tunes, also written by King, but with art provided by Byron Vaughns. That one, however, may not end up enthralling me as much, but I’ll still give it a whirl.

Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 arrives in comic shops next Wednesday, June 28.

Ever since Matt Reeves stepped into the director's chair for The Batman, there's been no concrete information on what we can expect from the film. Today, however, we learned from the director that his film will be influenced and inspired by the films of the great Alfred Hitchcock. If any comic book film could fit in with Hitchcock's filmmaking style, it's Batman!

While talking to CNET during the press tour for his upcoming film War for the Planet of the Apes., the director explained: 

"For me, point of view is really important. I want to make sure you are experiencing something from the perspective of the main character in the story. I'm a huge Hitchcock fan -- I like the idea of being immersed in that perspective."

It'll be interesting to see how he incorporates the things he loves about Hitchcock into The Batman. Hitchcock was known as the Master of Suspense, and it'd be great to see a truly suspenseful Batman film.

I've always wanted to see a film noir-style Batman movie where we get to see the story really dig into him being a detective. I know some people might think that's a boring way to go, but Batman is known as "The Worlds Greatest Detective", I think it's about time he lived up to that title in the films. 

Don't get me wrong, Batman has done some detective work in his films, but I'm talking about Se7en-style detective work. Comic book story arcs like Batman Unseen, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Black Mirror, and Broken City. These stories relied more on his detective work than his fighting skills and would all work great with a Hitchcockian style.

Who knows what he's planning, though. He said they are just starting on developing the project, so there's a long way to go!
