The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This is week, we’re heading to Japan via Portugal to hear about Freeze, an entertaining format in which contestants need to stay still while faced with loud noises, jumps, comedy situations and even robot arms, all designed to make them move and lose money. Japan is famed for its wacky formats and distributor Fremantle has proven the concept can travel by landing three season commissions for the show in Portugal, just six months after adding it to the catalog.

ABCd will not just have digital short series but also has full seasons of 38 "throwback" shows such as 8 Simple Rules, My So-Called Life, Felicity (which aired on The WB but is owned by ABC), Ellen, Ugly Betty, and more. America is great at a lot of things. We rule the world in football (and I mean actual football, not the kind of "football" that eighth graders can master faster than Ethiopians). We always win the World Series (except when Toronto wins and the Mlb is required to erase the memory of every baseball fan for that particular year). And we produce more monster trucks, people needlessly crying on television and illegal fireworks accidents per capita than any other nation on Earth.
However, when it comes to game shows, the Japanese have us beat by a mile marker or two. They produce shows with brilliant, insane challenges that produce more hilarious trips and falls than a 'Tosh.0' marathon.
So now that the two companies who created the short-lived ABC reality series 'I Survived a Japanese Game Show' have joined forces once again, maybe they...

ABC is continuing its quest to make summer all about embarrassing reality shows with a new series called Downfall. The series premieres June 22nd, following ABC's other absurd reality show, Wipeout (I Survived A Japanese Game Show used to be paired with Wipeout, which was mercifully cancelled after its poor second season.) The show's host has just been announced as WWE wrestler Chris Jericho, who will be charged with reading questions to contestants as they stand on top of a very tall building. This will be a great way for Jericho's fans to see him outside of the WWE ring. He also stars in MacGruber, but no one except Will Forte's mom has seen that movie in theaters.

Lucerne, Switzerland -- Switzerland's Rose d'Or was once the television equivalent of the Festival de Cannes -- a showcase of the best in TV entertainment and a can't miss market/confab for the industry.
Next to an Emmy, winning a Golden Rose was about as good as it got for the small screen. Since its start in 1961, Rose d'Or juries honored some of the most innovative television programming every made, with show such as David Frost's "The Frost Report," Rowan Atkinson's "Bean," "The Muppet Show" or Canada's "Kids in the Hall" taking home the golden Rose trophy.
But the Rose wilted after financial mismanagement forced organizers Bigger Pix into bankruptcy in 2006. For a while it looked like the festival's decades-long tradition would fade as well. A white knight came in the form of Zurich-based event planner Freddy Burger, which acquired the rights to the Rose d'Or name and...

If you think you’ve seen the world’s wackiest game shows on television, think again. ABC is now gearing up for their wackiest offering ever, and it comes by the name of I Survived A Japanese Game Show. ABC has gathered ten Americans, most of which has never gone out of the country, for a grueling feat in Japan, where they will compete in the funniest and craziest games ever. ABC has already begun shooting for the reality competition, which challenges contestants to vie for the prize of $250,000.
Also appearing on the reality competition is host and interpreter Tony Sano. An American actor who is fluent in Japanese, Sano has previously worked on Touch Wood and Beating Vegas. Mamasan, a house mother and resident pot stirrer, will also be leading the contestants alongside game show host Rome Kanda, who was previously seen on the Pink Panther and Saturday Night Live.
