Jake Paul‘s November bout against Mike Tyson was one of the biggest Netflix broadcasts of 2024, but not even an influencer boxing spectacle can top the most popular 3D characters in the world of children’s entertainment. Entertainment company Moonbug reported that its hit franchise CoComelon was the most-viewed show of the year on Netflix, totaling 231.1 million views.
After years of secrecy regarding its traffic, Netflix has started sharing precise viewership data in biannual reports. Though Netflix’s data dumps may inflate some statistics because of how the streamer counts views, the What We Watched report offers a broad look at the programs and trends that have won over Netflix subscribers.
During the second half of 2024, many Netflix viewers had their eyes glued on the Paul/Tyson tilt. Beyond its concurrent live audience, which peaked at 65 million, the broadcast has also attracted 49 million views on-demand. That made it Netflix’s...

Sometimes you know what people are watching on Netflix just by being part of culture. It’s not going to shock anyone to learn that “Squid Game” and the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight were, indeed, hits.
But when you dive further into the streamer’s data, weirder trends begin to emerge.
For example, did you know that in the last six months of 2024, people were all about “Prison Break” and that audiences were watching that nearly 20-year-old Fox series far more than both “Lost” or “Dexter”? Well, now you do.
Following the streamer’s release of its most watched titles from July to December of 2024, TheWrap combed through the top 100 TV titles in search for trends. Then we went a bit beyond that just for fun. From “Squid Game” Season 2 to “Tokyo Swindlers,” here’s what the world was watching in the second half of 2024.

Disney Branded Television has ordered a fifth season of Disney Jr. and Marvel’s preschool megahit Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends. The news comes on the heels of the series recently moving ahead of both Paw Patrol and Cocomelon to become the No. 2 streaming series for Kids and Boys 2-5 during the last quarter of 2024, second only to Bluey.
“‘Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends’ is what happens when two storytelling powerhouses — Marvel and Disney Jr. — come together to introduce the next generation to the world of Super Heroes,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.
“We love this show, and it’s been incredible to see how much kids do too. Team Spidey’s adventures aren’t slowing down anytime soon, and we can’t wait to bring even more stories, characters and action-packed fun for years to come.”

Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends has been renewed for a fifth season by Disney Branded Television. This announcement comes as the show’s third season is airing on Disney Jr., with Season 4 set to premiere this summer.
The show has become a big hit with kids. In late 2024, it was the second-most-watched streaming show for children ages 2-5, even beating out popular shows like ‘Paw Patrol’ and ‘Cocomelon’. It only trails behind ‘Bluey’. The series has also hit one billion hours watched on Disney Jr. and Disney+, with over two billion views on YouTube through Disney Jr. and Marvel HQ channels.
Besides TV, the show’s success extends into toys, books, and music. It ranks among the top five best-selling preschool toy brands worldwide and has released soundtracks through Walt Disney Records. There’s even a stage show, ‘Disney Jr. Live on Tour: Let’s Play’, that features a segment with Spidey.

Despite the increasing popularity of anime, there was only one anime series that made the Top 10 globally for Netflix Original releases in 2024. This is despite the numerous major anime released during the year, some of which had been hyped through the roof.
However, even with this competition, a rather experimental Gundam series was ultimately the only anime to hit a particular milestone for the streaming service. Mobile Suit Gundam remains one of the biggest anime franchises in the world, with many of the shows available to stream on various platforms. Almost always a popular watch, the most recent series attained an interesting and unexpected level of success in 2024, especially on streaming platform Netflix.

NCIS is still one of the most streamed shows in the world. Even with all the new content available on streaming services, NCIS remains high on the list.
October 2024 numbers have revealed that the trend continues, and those numbers could even see a boost during the upcoming winter hiatus.
Last year, NCIS finished third place for the top 10 overall streaming programs. Those numbers measure how many minutes a show is streamed on a service.
It may be difficult for fans to grasp the overall numbers, but Nielsen reported that NCIS was streamed 39.4 billion minutes in 2023. These minutes are accrued from the 400+ episodes NCIS has released over many years.
Nielsen combines the numbers from each user as they watch portions or full episodes of NCIS. For instance, binge-watching 10 straight episodes leads to roughly 420 to 440 minutes of streaming time (hour-long episodes are shorter when removing the commercials).

Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story led Nielsen’s streaming charts for a second straight week — and grew substantially from its debut.
The Ryan Murphy-produced series was the top title for the week of Sept. 23-29 with just under 2.4 billion minutes of viewing time. That’s a 40 percent improvement on the drama’s opening week (it premiered Sept. 19), which had 1.72 billion minutes of watch time, and the highest total for any streaming series in Nielsen’s rankings since Bridgerton hit 2.47 billion minutes in June.
Two other Netflix series had strong opening weeks: Rom-com Nobody Wants This premiered to 1.04 billion minutes of viewing, and the docuseries Mr. McMahon, about World Wrestling Entertainment impresario Vince McMahon, had 908 million minutes.

Former Netflix executive Beatriz Miller is joining Moonbug Entertainment as the company’s senior director of distribution and originals for North America as the studio looks to ramp up its expansion in the market through originals and distribution of shows such as “CoComelon,” “Blippi” and “Little Angel.”

Netflix has picked up streaming rights to Glitch Studios‘ megaviral animation series The Amazing Digital Circus—but, unlike with most deals it signs, it’s giving up exclusivity and isn’t going to pull Tadc off original home YouTube. In fact, moving forward, all episodes of Tadc will premiere for free on YouTube and for subscription on Netflix on the very same day.
Netflix has done this sort of deal before with preschool hit Cocomelon, which also found its first home on YouTube and drives 2 billion views a month there. As part of that partnership, Netflix developed its own exclusive Cocomelon series, Cocomelon Lane, but also airs the same content folks can find for free on YouTube.
That approach is the same one it’s taking with Tadc, and it’s a big difference for a streamer that normally produces its own shows in-house, or acquires outside productions for pretty...

It’s lonely at the top, but that’s the dilemma Netflix faces as the world’s largest streamer. The lack of competition for that title has left Netflix with plenty of time to experiment, including potentially borrowing the strategies of other streaming services like Apple TV+. That streamer’s parent company has reportedly considered changing the way it pays for streaming original TV shows and movies to reward better quality productions and save money upfront. A new report from Bloomberg's Lucas Shaw indicates that Netflix is considering doing the same.
Key Details: Netflix wants to pay creators less initially, and more on the back end if their shows turn out to be a success. The streamer has already made several film deals along this line but denies it wants to do the same with TV. Shows like “Bridgerton” could see bigger financial windfalls if the new system is implemented.

Netflix released its semi-annual data dump on Thursday, unveiling viewership for the streamer’s biggest hits — and not so big releases — from January through June of 2024.
While the most-watched seasons of TV during the six-month interval included “Fool Me Once,” “Bridgerton” Season 3, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Gentlemen,” a group of winners have arisen from the data dump, including children’s TV as a whole — including “Peppa Pig” — “Young Sheldon” and buzzy crime docs like “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal.”
As the streamer continues to bolster its live event programming, the success of “The Roast of Tom Brady” followed in the footsteps of “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” as it found an eager audience, whereas the first-ever livestream of the SAG-AFTRA Awards earlier this year didn’t do much for Netflix, viewership-wise.
For the full breakdown of the biggest TV-centric revelations from Netflix’s data dump for the first half of 2024, see below.

Netflix’s original shows and movies typically dominate the streamer’s most-viewed content rankings. But it still serves up hundreds of millions of hours of content licensed from third parties, as shown by Netflix’s massive data dump for viewing covering the first half of 2024.
Not surprisingly, kids content continues to fare well — extremely well. No. 1 on the TV side is perennial preschool favorite “CoComelon,” from Moonbug Entertainment, which pulled in 124.5 million views in aggregate. And that doesn’t include the two seasons of “CoComelon Lane” (34.4 million), which is a Netflix original produced by Moonbug. In addition, Moonbug’s “Little Angel” series garnered 52.4 million views over its five volumes.
Following “CoComelon” was another children’s TV staple: British animated show “Peppa Pig,” with 117.4 million views over six seasons. “Young Sheldon,” the spinoff the “The Big Bang Theory” that just ended its run on CBS last spring, came in strong with...

The first live-action addition to the CoComelon universe is coming this fall. The most-watched kids’ channel on YouTube — which counts more than 186 billion lifetime views on its flagship channel — is giving teacher Ms. Appleberry her own spinoff called Melon Patch Classroom.

It’s a gathering that will bring together CEOs and CMOs, owners of NFTs and MBAs, trading card and pin collectors and a healthy dose of social media creators, podcasters and influencers. VeeCon, which runs Aug. 9-11 in downtown Los Angeles, is at its core an expression of the multitudes contained by serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.
“We want to be the coolest business conference,” Vaynerchuk told Variety. The event will highlight Vaynerchuk’s various businesses with a strong emphasis on his budding kids brand VeeFriends. TV commercials are practically a synonym for annoyance. But for Gen Alpha, YouTube ads are a can’t miss even when they are a can skip.
According to a new study by Precise TV and Giraffe Insights, most kids ages 2-12 recall the ads they see on YouTube more than any other platform. YouTube delivers 2.3-times better ad recall compared to broadcast and cable television and 2.6-times greater ad recall than video-on-demand.
The results are similar to ones that Precise and Giraffe released last year, when the groups found that 60 percent of teens 13-17 were more likely to watch YouTube ads rather than skip.
Why are kids not skipping YouTube ads? Ok, so some of the ads are just not skippable, but there are reasons far beyond — and far better than — that. For starters, YouTube has best-in-class video ads from a targeting perspective, and contextual relevance is key for an...

“Success in streaming is really about engagement” and finding hits is “more art than science,” such as data exercises or algorithm-driven work, Netflix co-ceo Greg Peters said in London on Tuesday. If you don’t have kids, you may not have heard of “Gabby’s Dollhouse.” If you have a preschooler, it has likely become a welcome upgrade from the “Cocomelon” of your child’s nursery school days.
No intended shade at “Cocomelon,” the other monster hit for Netflix in the kids space. “Cocomelon” is simplistic animation set to familiar nursery rhymes — it’s a low lift both in terms of production and consumption. “Gabby’s,” a combination of (a little) live-action and (a lot of) animation, is a child’s entry point into storytelling and imaginative play. It was for my kids — and millions of others.
For 2023, the top 5 children’s series on streaming ranked like this, per Nielsen:

Its a common problem you run into as a parent, babysitter, or any other person that has regular contact with kids. You need them to settle down. They beg and beg you to turn it on. Its all you hear about; the kids wear the characters on their clothes and shoes and lunchboxes and have all the toys. Thats right, were talking about childrens television. The bane of so many adult existences. Those colorful, loud, almost over-stimulating shows that kids seem to go crazy for. For this writer, it was series like Blues Clues and Little Bear or anything that was on the Noggin station, really but nowadays, it seems Pj Masks, Paw Patrol, and the godforsaken Cocomelon have taken their place. However, every once in a while, child wranglers are given an absolute gift: a kids' TV show that doesnt make their brain melt. And currently, dear readers, that savior show is Bluey.

Ask any parent you know about children’s television, and no doubt you’ll receive some very passionate responses. Bluey is fun and entertaining. Cocomelon is an animated nightmare. Blue’s Clues is nostalgic and watchable. Pj Masks makes you wish television had never been invented. These strong opinions are to be expected. After all, parents and caregivers of children are subjected to hours and hours of these shows, so they're bound to end up with a take. No children’s show seems to have parents as divided as Paw Patrol, though. Some praise it, some despise it, but it remains a very popular franchise. Kids are simply enthralled by Ryder and his team of pups that save the citizens of Adventure Bay. So enthralled, in fact, that the Paw Patrol received a feature film, Paw Patrol: The Movie, in 2021 and now, the second film, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, was released last year.

There’s a great variety of new titles heading to top streaming services this week, from popular kids shows to college basketball and everything in between.
Have patience, NCAA basketball fans. The 2024 Men’s Basketball tournament has to wait until next week, and while that probably seems like an eternity for fans of teams heading to the big dance, it’s at least worth noting that the months-long wait for the tournament to start again is almost over!
The best news is that The Streamable will, as usual, have a list of new TV and movie streaming premieres ready to go for basketball fans, as well as audiences who don’t care about sports to get you through the week. Don’t bite your fingernails off or work yourself into a frenzy waiting for March Madness, just distract yourself with the new titles heading to a streaming service near you this week!

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. The week of Jan. 15-21 was a big one for streaming.
Seven titles — three original series, three acquired shows and one movie — each drew more than 1 billion minutes of viewing for the week, the most that have ever hit that mark in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming charts. The previous high was six, which has happened four times (including two weeks earlier).

Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). In a rare collab with another preschool brand, Sesame Workshop’s “Sesame Street” and Moonbug’s “Blippi” are getting together for a series of videos in which Elmo and his pals interact with Blippi and his friends. The videos kick off on Saturday with the premiere of “Blippi and Meekah’s Birthday Surprise for Elmo.”
That’s the first of three videos that have been produced for social and online, with the possibility of more along the way. Elmo, Big Bird, Abby, Blippi, Meekah, Herb the Dinosaur and more will be seen in the collection of episodes and music videos when they premiere simultaneously on the “Blippi” and “Sesame Street” YouTube channels. Further videos will launch in June and September.
Both shows feature collaborations with celebrities and other figures, but it’s rare for two completely separate preschool entities to get together and work on a project like this. But...

There were a lot of streaming options in 2023. But one of the biggest blessings was the resurgence of Meghan Markle, Gabriel Macht, and Patrick J Adams starrer Suits. Not only that, but it is 2023’s most-watched show, surpassing The Big Bang Theory, Friends, and others. Scroll below for all the details!
Many factors led to the popularity of Suits growing all over again in 2023. It is undeniable that the characters are kickass, the dialogues are witty, and the plots are highly engaging. Americans streamed 21 million years of video in 2023, according to Nielsen, and a hell of a lot of that was Australian series “Bluey.” Whoops, we mean a heck of a lot — it’s a kids show, after all.
The Disney+ import was the second most-streamed program of 2023, according to new Nielsen data, behind only “Suits.” Ah, biscuits.
“Suits,” which originally aired on USA Network from 2011-2019, was an absolute streaming juggernaut in 2023. It topped Nielsen’s streaming charts for 12 straight weeks, snapping an old “Ozark” record. And all it took was one Netflix licensing deal — and a ton of prominent placement by its algorithm. It would have been trifficult for any show to compete with that.
But consider the “Bluey” achievement. It and “Suits” offered roughly the same number of episodes (145 vs. 141) in 2023, but the two programs have wildly different runtimes. “Suits” is an hourlong drama (or 44 minutes without commercials); “Bluey...

‘Suits’ was the top acquired streaming program of the year, with more than 57 billion minutes streamed on Netflix and Peacock.
A lot happened in the streaming world in 2023. A shift in priorities took hold across the industry, as streaming providers realized they must figure out how to become profitable — and fast — to rehabilitate their stock prices. All of that happened against the backdrop of strikes by Hollywood’s largest writer and actor unions, and both of those factors combined to aid the rise of a potent programming segment: acquired content. Licensed shows like “Suits” took audiences by storm in 2023, and data compiled by Nielsen about streaming viewership last year provides good insight into what watchers can expect from their favorite streamer in 2024.

In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...

Disney+ got more strong returns from Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well, ad Prime Video’s Reacher ascended to the top overall spot.
Young Sheldon scored 1.31 billion minutes of viewing time on Netflix and Max for the week of Dec. 25-31, topping second-place Bluey (1.11 billion) by about 200 million minutes. The Crown (1.04 billion minutes) also topped the billion-minute mark for Netflix.

The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.
