Exclusive: The vampires are moving from Amazon to HBO.

A comedy series based on Grady Hendrix’s New York Times bestseller The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires has landed at HBO, with the author writing alongside The Righteous Gemstones duo Danny McBride and Edi Patterson.

The project was previously in development at Amazon with Patrick Moran’s Pkm Productions but has now moved to the Warner Bros Discovery premium network without Moran’s involvement.

Hendrix, McBride and Patterson will exec produce, alongside Brandon James for McBride’s Rough House Pictures. Quirk Books, which published the novel, will also have an exec producer credit.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires follows a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger that may be a vampire killing their children.

Exclusive: Actress and director Gillian Jacobs has signed with WME for representation in all areas.

Jacobs most recently starred as Mary Jayne Gold in Netflix original series Transatlantic, a WWII drama that follows the story of American allies forming a rescue operation in Marseilles to help refugees fleeing Europe.

Max, the new name of HBO Max as of May 23rd, will be adding a new food series with Zooey Deschanel, an animated series set in the world of Gremlins, and the rebirth of Clone High to its streaming lineup in June 2023. The Idol, starring The Weeknd and Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose, arrives on June 4th after dividing the crowd at Cannes, and the much-anticipated third season of Warrior kicks off on June 29th.

Exclusive: HBO Max is not proceeding with a fourth season of adult animated comedy Close Enough, from Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel and Cartoon Network Studios. The decision comes a little over three months after the release of the second season on April 7.

As Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements ramp up the output from their Tomorrow Studios shingle, they’ve identified the first project they plan to bring out via their new deal with Julia Garner.

Garner and her producing partner Rowan Riley, via their company Alma Margo, sealed a first-look deal with Tomorrow earlier this year. Their first series will be a drama about an international jewel heist titled “Balabusta.”

“She’s very engaged and involved in every step of the way,” Adelstein said of Garner. “That’s probably one of the best deals we’ve ever made. We’re really happy to be in business with her.”

Garner, of course, is on a roll, having scored Emmy nominations this week in both lead actress in a limited series (for “Inventing Anna”) and supporting actress in a drama (for “Ozark”). Garner already has two Emmys, having won for “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020 in the supporting drama actress field.

The announcement was made during a panel at Rooster Teeth’s Rtx Festival, a convention dedicated to podcasting, video games and animation.

The animated series is created by Steve Dildarian, and is a spiritual successor to his HBO series “The Life and Times of Tim.” The show follows Tom, an average kid struggling to navigate childhood who is surrounded by well-meaning adults with questionable guidance. Season 1 consisted of 10 30-minute episodes, each of which consisted of two quarter-hour segments.

Dildarian writes and directs the series in addition to voicing Tom. Byron Bowers, Todd Glass, Gillian Jacobs, John Malkovich and Edi Patterson roundout the main cast, while David Duchovny, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lynonne, Mark Proksch and Tim Robinson guest starred during Season 1. Under the deal, Tomorrow Studios will tap into Big Light’s network of established and emerging writers and its pursuit of IP for projects to produce together under one development slate.

Big Light Prods. specializes in returning and limited dramas for the global market. The company, which has built up a rep as a transatlantic powerhouse, has a slate that includes “Medici” for Netflix and Italian public broadcaster Rai; “The Man in the High Castle” for Amazon’s Prime Video; “Devils” for Sky; and “The Indian Detective” for Canada’s CTV.

Misiak has signed with CAA in all areas.

It comes as Dave was renewed last month for a third season.

In the comedy series, Misiak plays Ally, Dave’s ex-girlfriend and a teacher. After breaking up in season one, she and the eponymous character find themselves awkwardly stumbling into a new dynamic.

She is also starring in Paramount+’s Players, the mockumentary series from American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. The series follows a fictional League of Legends pro eSports team.

That role sees her reuniting with Yacenda and Perrault – she starred in season two of Netflix’s American Vandal. She has also appeared in NBC’s I Feel Bad and HBO Max’s animated series Ten Year Old Tom.

Jennifer Coolidge will indeed return for Season 2 of “The White Lotus.” HBO confirmed the star’s return on Monday, as well as news that production on the new season has begun in Sicily, Italy. Coolidge’s return was expected, although until now HBO had declined comment on initial reports that she would be back.

Season 2 of the satire will consist of seven episodes and follow the exploits of various guests and employees at an exclusive Italian resort over the span of a week — similar to the format of the Hawai’i-set first season. Coolidge is the only regular to return from Season 1; new cast members include F. Murray Abraham, Adam Dimarco, Meghann Fahy, Tom Hollander, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, Will Sharpe and Leo Woodall. Broadcast in over 80 territories, “Find Me in Paris” (78 x 26’) follows the story of Lena Grisky, a time-travelling ballet dancer from 1905 Russia trapped in modern day Paris, and the many dilemmas she faces finding her place between two worlds. ITV Studios Strikes Major CBC Content Deal

ITV Studios has struck a major scripted and non-scripted content deal with Canadian network CBC as the London Screenings approaches. The deal includes BBC drama Showtrial from ITV Studios-backed Line of Duty producer World Productions, the second series of Kelsey Munro’s Bump, Paramount+’s Australian comedy Spreadsheet, adult animation Ten Year Old Tom and Swedish procedural Thin Blue Line. On the non-scripted side, CBC has taken British factual titles such as Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs and The Queen Unseen. The Canadian network has also extended its deal to air ITV soap Coronation Street. “This is a top notch list of amazing scripted and factual titles from across the globe,” said Craig Bohland, ITV Studios’ Vice President Sales, Canada. The Critics Choice Awards stand out in part because the organization combines film and television categories into one night of mega-celebration. But not all elements are created equal on the road to gold.

Here, Variety breaks down what is notable about the television submission process and side of the ballot for this year’s awards, which take place Jan. 9 in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be simulcast on the CW and TBS.

Two Phase 1 Timelines

The Critics Choice Assn. (Cca) does not require formal submissions for film categories, but it does for the television categories. This year, that period was between Sept. 27 and Nov. 15. The nomination committee began deliberations on Nov. 16, and the TV nominations will be announced on Dec. 6. In contrast, film branch members of the organization won’t receive their nominating ballots until the next day, Dec. 7, with the deadline of midnight Pt Dec. 10 to return film ballots.

Exclusive: Spike Einbinder (Los Espookys), Greta Lee (The Morning Show), Laith Nakli (Ramy), Larry Owens (High Maintenance), Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), RZA (Wu-Tang: An American Saga), James Scully (You), and Greta Titelman (Search Party) have joined the cast of the untitled film that four-time Emmy nominee Julio Torres is directing for A24, in his feature debut.

The film’s plot is being kept under wraps. Torres is directing from his own screenplay and also co-stars with Oscar winner Tilda Swinton.

Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s Fruit Tree is producing alongside A24, with the latter handling the film’s worldwide distribution.

Einbinder has appeared on the TV side in Los Espookys (the HBO series Torres created with Fred Armisen and Ana Fabrega), High Maintenance and Horace and Pete. They’ll next appear in the final season of HBO Max’s Search Party.

U.K. broadcaster ITV increased its external revenues by a strong 28% for the nine months ending Sept. 30, 2021, according to a trading statement that did not include profit and loss calculations, released on Wednesday.

External revenue rose to £2.3 billion ($3.1 billion), compared to £1.8 billion in 2020. Revenue for production arm ITV Studios revenue was up 32% to £1.19 billion compared to 2020’s £905 million.

Shows delivered by ITV Studios include “Vigil” for BBC One, “Physical” for Apple TV Plus, “The Long Call” and “Endeavour” for ITV, “Ten Year Old Tom” for HBO Max, “Snowpiercer” season 2 for Netflix and “Love Island” in the U.K. for ITV and in the U.S. for CBS.

With the majority of big global TV distributors opting out of a physical presence at Mipcom, the flashy stands have been replaced by snazzy digital platforms showcasing content rolling out starting this fall.

Among them are a series of virtual festivals by Banijay, which acquired Endemol Shine in summer 2020 and boasts a catalog of more than 88,000 hours of programming. Rather than join Mipcom organizer Reed Midem’s virtual Mipcom Online Plus event, the mega-indie is going its own way, as are so many other distributors.

The latest of its planned digital forays is a non-English language scripted festival designed to showcase the group’s eclectic mix of European dramas. These include six-part French show “Germinal,” a modern adaptation of Émile Zola’s classic 1985 coal-mining strike saga; Swedish boarding-school drama “A Class Apart”; and Italian coming-of-age series “My Ballerina,” a co-production with Italy’s Mediaset.

ITV Studios has unveiled a raft of pre-sales for several of its titles and released details about its scripted slate of shows which the company will present to buyers from around the world at its Fall Festival Drama day, Wednesday Oct. 6.

Commissioned by ITV and Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent), the new drama series “Litvinenko,” from writer George Kay, is a four-part true-crime drama starring David Tennant. The series, which is produced by Patrick Spence, ITV Studios and Tiger Aspect Productions, recounts the real-life story of Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian Federal Security Services and Kgb officer was killed by polonium poisoning in 2006, initiating one of the Metropolitan Police’s most complicated investigations in its history.

Pre-sales deals announced by ITV Studios include major series “The Ipcress File,” “The Long Call,” and “Showtrial,” and a number of shows will hit the market next week including “Our House” (Red Planet Pictures...
